  • This short piece of footage shows Oliver, an enigmatic chimpanzee who habitually walked upright bipedally, and was the subject of considerable zoological controversy from the mid-1970s onward as to whether he may represent an entirely new species of ape or even a humanzee (alleged human x chimpanzee hybrid). However, genetic analyses eventually revealed that he was neither, merely a very distinctive individual specimen of the common chimpanzee Pan troglodytes. This footage appeared in an epside of the short-lived 1990s UK TV show 'Fortean TV', and was narrated by Reverend Lionel Fanthorpe. NB - I claim no ownership/copyright whatsoever of this recording, and it is presented here on a strictly non-commercial Fair Use basis for educational/review purposes only.

    He was kind of a tragic figure. He wasn't accepted by the other chimps. And he couldn't be passed off as a human, so he really had no one. Lonely life. Watching him walk was a cool thing. He walked on all fours at times, but could straighten up and walk like a human. It freaked the other chimps out. He should have been the chimp king! I think he was an evolutionary next step for the chimpanzee. I don't know about scientifically, but he was definitely different

      There's a zoo in Japan that has 3 former circus chimps, they can't be mixed with other chimps that weren't reared by people, they lack social skills. One of the chimps walks upright often because his knees and hips are damaged from being forced to walk upright.

      Oliver's body has not been and never can be exhumed, because when he died his body was cremated and his ashes spread on the grounds of the animal sanctuary where he'd been living. This was done specifically to prevent anyone exhuming him, it was felt that he deserved peace and privacy in death. Yes, DNA tests showing that he had the normal 48 chromosomes were indeed carried out, but while he was still alive.

    Looks like he might have a little bit of down syndrome and a bit of a lighter case, not so severe
    Or maybe he was inbred, sometimes chimpanzees are known to mate with their siblings or family
    IDK this is just a theory I came up with . He could have gotten brain damage while in the wild. The wild is very rough on newborns and infants and all kinds of stuff happens in the wild

    • @czbikerguy
      @czbikerguy  11 месяцев назад +4

      Chromosomal analyses confirmed that he had a typical chimp chromosome count (he would have had one extra chromosome if he'd exhibited Downs Syndrome), and far from being brain-damaged he was exceptionally intelligent and mentally capable. So I think he was simply a naturally gifted individual whose gifts had been augmented by his animal trainer owner for public display purposes.

    Not surprisingly this clip makes for some interesting comments. The thing about the upright walking gait is possibly like a genetic sport maybe you have seen albino robins for example. If there was an evolutionary advantage then the female chips would have no choice but to mate with mutant. Over time scale of species and climate stress, all sorts of marvels likely came and went. All singing all dancing piano playing suits Hollywood but not Plecstocene tough conditions.

      @czbikerguy  2 года назад +31

      Yes he was - detailed genetic and chromosomal analyses confirmed that identity for him, beyond any doubt whatsoever. DNA analysis expert Dr John J. Ely from Texas's Trinity University and cytogeneticist Dr Charleen Moore from Texas University's Health Science Center conducted the most extensive genetic studies ever undertaken with Oliver. Their results were published in 1998 by the American Journal of Physical Anthropology and disclosed the following details. Standard chromosomal studies confirmed that Oliver had the diploid chromosome count expected for chimpanzees (i.e. 48, in 24 pairs). They also revealed that his chromosomes possessed banding patterns typical for the common chimpanzee but different from those of humans and bonobos, thereby excluding any possibility of Oliver being a hybrid. Moreover, when they sequenced a specific portion (312 bp region) of the D-loop region of Oliver's mitochondrial DNA, they discovered that its sequence corresponded very closely indeed with that of the Central African subspecies of common chimpanzee; and the closest correspondence of all was with a chimp specimen from Gabon in Central-West Africa. So, like I said, Oliver was a chimpanzee, no question.

      @@czbikerguy There are some very educated people out there that insist that apes and man are very close genetically, over 98 percent. What they leave out is a normal human and a mongoloid are over 99.9 percent genetically identical. Think about that. I'm not picking on Downs Syndrome people, but it's rare you see someone with Downs running a bank, or working as a nurse. That less than .1 percent is actually a huge difference and the 2 percent between man and ape is very different. I've never seen a chimp even get a job at McDonalds.
