Jones went to the studio to watch the Beatles rehearse, and Lennon sang "It's not a unicorn, it's an elephant" to the tune of "It's Not Unusual" (a tune I like a lot) while playing his guitar. Lennon then said "How you doing you Welsh {derogatory term}?". Jones became angry and yelled "come up here, you Scouse {derogatory term} and I'll show you". Jones' manager told him not to, saying that it was Lennon's sense of humor. Later on they became friends despite Lennon's insufferable humor.
Holy Shit, I always thought that Tom was just some dorky crooner but nooooo! He blows this out of the water and man is he groovy and he gets down! Damn dog!!! This is the best ever!!!
I cant believe he made it to age 81!! He might still be alive if it were not for COVID, which killed him. There is hope for me yet! My name is David too, BTW. Me: Born 1957.
RIP David Crosby. Looking quite happy to be singing with the immortal Tom Jones on this night. Likely high as giraffe balls but happy none the less. This is the best version of my favorite CSN song.
How a man born in Wales knew how to belt out a blues like song with such power and perfection is beyond me . I mean back in 69 it couldn’t have been that easy to find rhythm and blues off in little Wales like it is today . He’s not singing it like he just following the fad of the day - you’d think he was raised on it . Man that voice of his is crazy good.
This should be required viewing for anyone who listens to music. There's more talent on that stage than the building could contain! What. A. Performance!
Steve and Tom are in the zone!!! It's roughly rehearsed, but, mostly jammed with a crazy unabandoned impulsiveness! This stuff doesn't happen anymore. It is priceless. And great!
These were the greatest eras in music history the 60s and 70s there's been some great music since but nothing has topped them 2 decades when music was real.
Tom could front Metallica and kick ass. You'll notice he dressed down for CSN&Y. I think Tom spurred Mr. Stills to new heights with the vocals and did you see the way Graham Nash and David Crosby kept looking at each other like: "this dude can really sing!"?? They were duly impressed I can tell you that much. 👍
You're exactly right, they were having a blast, and not just because of anything they might be under the influence of. Tom Jones was a big deal then, and I'll bet it was flattering to have him interpret their song. I love to see disparate acts make music together!
Tom Jones pulled my wife up on stage when she was 20. She never lets me forget it. It was the highlight of her life. I saw Crosby Stills and Nash in 78 at Boston Garden. Great show
I remember going to see Tom Jones in Las Vegas back I the 90's. I went into the show because I was invited by friends, the ticket was free and, at the time, I was indifferent towards TJ. I was neither a fan not did I have anything against him. By the time I left the show I was definitely a huge fan. Talk about a performer. I came away feeling that he was engaging with the crowd on a very personal level, individually, all at the same time... I realize how counterintuitive that sounds but that's the best way I can describe the experience. He was mesmerizing...
I dragged my BF to the same Tom Jones show in Las Vegas back in the late 90's. He thought it was going to be lame. To this day, he still talks about how great the show was. Tom delivered!
In the late 1960s, one of the great variety shows on American television was the Tom Jones show. He had a great ear for wanting to book who was hip and happening at that time and then he would sing with them! This is particularly fascinating as back then, Tom was thought of as “square” and CSNY was obviously thought of as completely the opposite. Well, in fact, Tom had always been one of the great singers and here he just knocks it out of the park on a song whose lyrics seem to resonate as much today as they did then! I also find this interesting that when Stills kicks in to sing you can tell he’s trying to reach the same level of intensity as Tom that Tom could do all the time.
@@sidemann8593 Big Jim Sullivan is obviously not playing guitar here. Crosby, Nash & Young are on guitar, Stills is on organ and the rhythm section is Gregory Reeves (b) and Dallas Taylor (dr).
WOW! This is the hardest hitting version of this song! Jones pushed Stiils in a way that proves more is more, and only sometimes less is more. Truly a defining moment in Rock & Roll History.
Let me put it this way . . . this was before CSN (and sometimes Y) became "lame" themselves - and that, in turn, preceded the situation of today where to get them together would be like herding cats together in a room.
I know, right?!! My thoughts exactly! Then......hell yeah!! What an unlikely combination! First of all, it's great to see good color footage of CSNY performing during this time period, just before the release of Deja Vu, with Neil Young, Dallas Taylor and Greg Reeves. But Tom is actually killin' it!! Great stuff!!
Here’s Tom, way over the top. Playing his instrument for all it’s worth. His voice. Gotta admit, it’s one hell of an instrument. He can wail with the best of them, that’s for damn sure. Just proves that great is great, no matter what generation, genre, rock, r&b, blues, rap, etc, etc. If it’s good, enjoy.
This is utterly top draw. CSNY were aware of their talents and it took a lot to impress them. You can tell Tom truly killed it by their reactions. So proud of this fellow Ponty boy!
The way they’re all smiling at each other- just having a great time. Stills starts singing a couple octaves too high and Tom Jones and Neal Young just laugh it off. What a moment in time! Also hats off to the kid playing bass, what he’s playing is not easy lol
It's so funny because he looks kind of like a square compared to CSNY, but as soon as he starts singing you can see them all start smiling. Tom Jones did a few tunes with Wilson Pickett, and you could tell Wilson was digging it too, haha. He was like a chameleon, he could hang with any of the soul singers of the day.
Smokin' version of the song! Tom gives it all he's got and the band is blown away by his voice! Back then the lines were a little blurred and the people more tolerant. I miss those times!
unreal, the soulfullness of Tom Jones, the high flawless harmony overall, and Steven singing like he is from another planet,WOW! . It does not get better by anyone, anywhere
Sometimes when you put great musicians together in a live setting you catch lightning in a bottle. They all fed off each other and took it to another level. As for Tom Jones, when you look past his stage persona, the guy has always been able to wail. He did a great version of Purple Rain back in the 90s. He's sung just about every kind of music with just about every kind of act. He's the real deal.
I’m old, been a fan of Tom since his first appearance. Can we agree that Stills was exceptional in this performance as well. Killin it! The music that CSNY gave us, is timeless. I was a drummer in the 60’s and it truly was a magical time for all forms of music. Thanks for sharing this Tom. Take care of yourself brother. 👍👏👏👏🙏

It's embarrassing to watch. Croz and Nash are smirking behind his back.
It doesn't serve the song.
Wish someon would pinch me. . . . . .can't believe what I just watched! Stunned & mezmerised😍
The same here. How did I miss this🎉
Tom did this within the body of soul that regular singers of today's scene aint got. Go Tom!
Never ,never dis the mighty Tom Jones. Ever.
His voice sucks balls on this.
Holy Shit, I always thought that Tom was just some dorky crooner but nooooo! He blows this out of the water and man is he groovy and he gets down! Damn dog!!! This is the best ever!!!
I KNEW Tom was NOT a dorky crooner,.,been listening to him since the beginning :)
Rest in Peace to David Crosby. An icon of 60's counterculture and an incredible musician with an iconic voice.
My first concert at age 12 and he died on my 50th birthday. He was major musical influence the whole way. He will be greatly missed.
And like a lot of geniuses in their field, an insufferable prick.. 😆
Love the giraffe reference, hadn't heard that one before. I am definitely using that! 😆
The term I'm familiar with is 'as high as a giraffe's toupe'
🤣
You got me laughing, I too think he was flying without wings!
Stephen Stills vocal performance was outstanding as well.
Totally bad ass performance by every single one of them..but I agree Stills was keeping up with the Jones!
Absolutely
I think Tom's performance was inspiring him. "All right, let's WAIL!"
@@marvinhighley3444 nice pun!
shoe Yes...seriously.
And great!
Great observation. And you are right: Simply does not happen anymore.
I did miss Stephen playing guitar, though...
Sure it does.
Brilliant borne of a time musicians collaborated and played live and even recorded ‘live’. Neil Young probably the only one still doing that.
@@dilwynjones8585 Carlos Santana still does that.
These were the greatest eras in music history the 60s and 70s there's been some great music since but nothing has topped them 2 decades when music was real.
The band are really enjoying Tom's vocals. What a great video.
Cool 😎
They all seem to really be enjoying it. Well, except Neil, but that's just Neil!
C.S.N.&Y were trying not to either laugh or toss down their guitars and walk off stage.
T T. crosby is "stoned to the bone"
@@marx007100 Got that feeling too, but they hung in there.
Tom Jones is a talent that only comes around every hundred years...
An undeniable performer and one of the great voices of popular music
Yeah, and we're still waiting 😳
I mean Tom is definitely super talented but he wasn't even the best voice of his own generation.
@@TheChrisnortontenor comparisons are odious
Jerry GARCIA was the BEST!!!
So true!
Yep
You're exactly right, they were having a blast, and not just because of anything they might be under the influence of. Tom Jones was a big deal then, and I'll bet it was flattering to have him interpret their song. I love to see disparate acts make music together!
And Tom Jones! Who'd a thunk it?!
Tom Jones pulled my wife up on stage when she was 20. She never lets me forget it. It was the highlight of her life. I saw Crosby Stills and Nash in 78 at Boston Garden. Great show
Lucky woman! ❤
@@barbarastrzykalski7070 I bet your husband is a lucky guy too. :)
RIP David Crosby and thank you for the music.
Big Jim Sullivan on guitar -- AMAZING!
Tom Jones got on his knees and kissed me from the stage the night I turned 21 in 1978 and It’s still the kiss of a lifetime!!!!
Funny, my wife says the same thing.
May I ask, what was the venue?
Michael Littlewood He was performing at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.
@@revans5283 Priceless. Thank you.
I have always wanted to see him live.
Holy mother of rock and roll, this is by far one of the best vocal performances I've ever seen. They're all in tune, singing with passion.
Check out Tom singing with Janis Joplin
@@sharksport01 I've seen it before. It's a great performance but didn't catch me like this one.

🙂👍
Tom Jones could always and still can sing
One Of My Favorite Tracks By This Band...Toms Unexpected Addition To This Is Absolutely Splendid...
Tom Jones can sing anything with anybody! He has got to be one of the greatest talents in the history of the world!
I was like “there’s no way Tom Jones can fit in with CSNY..”
I’m so glad I clicked this video, what a collaboration! Love you Neil
This is gonna be the LAMEST thing ever......
10 seconds later.....
OMG.....This is freakin' AWESOME!!!!!!!
blows them off the stage. they do not have the crust to sing with him. at all. And they know it
Lamer than adding Young to the group?
Let me put it this way . . . this was before CSN (and sometimes Y) became "lame" themselves - and that, in turn, preceded the situation of today where to get them together would be like herding cats together in a room.
😂😂yup...theyre ripping
I know, right?!! My thoughts exactly! Then......hell yeah!! What an unlikely combination! First of all, it's great to see good color footage of CSNY performing during this time period, just before the release of Deja Vu, with Neil Young, Dallas Taylor and Greg Reeves. But Tom is actually killin' it!! Great stuff!!
No autocue, no memorex, and that Mike was ON, deliver or die. Sir Tom is a vocal postman - he always delivers!
It's awesome seeing how happy it made Cros to hear Tom deliver his lyrics like a boss.
Anyone listening in the fall 2024🎉❤

You bet!
This is utterly top draw. CSNY were aware of their talents and it took a lot to impress them. You can tell Tom truly killed it by their reactions. So proud of this fellow Ponty boy!
Tom's voice here is just astounding!! 😲
Some great musicians all around, but I'd like to acknowledge the solid bass here by Greg Reeves.
Thanks - was wondering who he is :) What a dude! :)
He was only 14 at that time, right?
Right. Or 15 maybe.
Yeah man that guy can play!
Yes! Without him it would have fallen apart
You can just tell by the expression on David's face he's absolutely diggin what Tom is doin with the song 🎵
Yeah , you can see the surprise and yeah then he digs it.
This might be the greatest thing I ever seen on the internet!
Nice to hear a raw performance with no auto-tune or lipsyncing. Just the talent. Great video.
Fun Fact : More talent per square foot on this stage than anywhere else...….ever.
other than when dylan sang alone

Dylan's a Great, Great song writer
But Tom Jones is a better singer
You would rarely find more pure talent on stage at the same time...and remember this was recorded live.
Wow! Never imagined Tom with these guys, but he nailed it!
Rest in peace David Crosby. Thank you for all the years of great music.. My favorite rendition with the great Tom Jones..
This is incredible!!! Tom Jones is perfect with CSNY! And my God Stephen Stills hitting those notes!!!!
Yeah!
Stills tore it up!
Just amazing musicians All Around!
They all seemed like DAMN!!! We should be having Tom do this all the time this is GREAT!!!
I love when geniuses collaborate.
This is a milestone in rock history. ❤❤❤❤❤
I've lost count of how many times I've re-watched this.
And...it gets better each time😎
7. Tonight. It never gets old. Happy 2021!
YES SIR
David’s face says so much as he’s watching Tom take this song to next level.... he’s like wow!
When a tv show is a million times better than the any current live concerts singers
People made music that actually new how to play instruments and no autotune, no way
When Tom Jones was on stage, he sang EVERY song as if it was his last. This is a prime example. CSNY were really pushing hard to keep up.
Fantastic !
The way they’re all smiling at each other- just having a great time. Stills starts singing a couple octaves too high and Tom Jones and Neal Young just laugh it off. What a moment in time! Also hats off to the kid playing bass, what he’s playing is not easy lol
That kid is Greg Reeves who played bass on Deja Vu, they didn't snatch him from a bus stop and stick a bass in his hands.
@@portaccio Dallas Taylor on drums
He was 18 or 19 when he did this, that’s CRAZY to think about.
@@offtherecord86 younger I think. He lied about his age to get the gig, as the story goes. Think he might be like 16!
@@AndyRGuitarGuy WOW!
Steven Stills knew he had to raise his singing game or be totally outclassed by the great Tom Jones!!
Wow!! You just can't put a price tag on this amazing performance. There isn't a music genre that Tom Jones can't nail.
I don't care what any hipster says: Tom f'ing Jones killed it.
What hipster wouldn't at least arbitrarily agree with that?
It's so funny because he looks kind of like a square compared to CSNY, but as soon as he starts singing you can see them all start smiling. Tom Jones did a few tunes with Wilson Pickett, and you could tell Wilson was digging it too, haha. He was like a chameleon, he could hang with any of the soul singers of the day.
I saw Tom Jones live in a smaller venue & he is so powerful & yea, he absolutely killed it the entire time.
Look for the clip of him singing with Janis Joplin, even she was amazed how good he was
Tom doesn’t get enough credit because he went the Vegas route when he could’ve been the white Otis Redding
Smokin' version of the song! Tom gives it all he's got and the band is blown away by his voice! Back then the lines were a little blurred and the people more tolerant. I miss those times!
Better than the original. Tom Jones vocals are so powerful its beyond amazing.
They had a blast doing that. Can't believe I am at 63 just now seeing this, new favorite!
I wouldn’t say better than the original. Two distinctly different versions, however.
Wow! Great performance and Tom and Steven Stills vocals knock it out of the ballpark!
Young was enjoying it too . I saw several smiles of approval .
I’ve always loved Tom Jones singing. Being an excellent singer is a proud stereotype of the Welsh people. He represents it well.
Hello Karen
My Mom use to listen to Tom Jones but I bet she never heard this. Tom is killing it!
LOL! Mine too. She loved him and Englebert Humperdink!
I think this was one of the best live tv perfornce of the late 1960's, tom jones singing his heart out and neal young on guitar, wow just wow.

He's the real deal.
yes, he is. he is the jimi hendrix, keith emerson, bill bruford of male singers.
I thought the bass player was a young Calvin Samuels not GREGG REEVES
Remember seeing him sing a duet with Janis Joplin. Not your typical lounge lizard singer.
Did "Kiss" with The Art Of Noise too.
That's exactly what happened! Couldn't have put it better myself. Thank you!
Every one thinks of Tom as a showman but he's much more than that. He's an underrated multi talented musician
That’s the best version of that song I’ve ever heard, sweet...
Their faces reveal how much fun they are having and how much enjoyment/effort they are putting into their performances. What a treat to watch!!
Sir Tom Jones - the very definition of badass when it comes to the world of singing. Power ballads, soft crooning, hard rockers, blues, soul - he has it all!
Tom seems to inspire others to perform better when singing with him.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young & Jones. If they had made an album it would have gone platinum.
Now, that is one scenario that would have taken the world by storm.
Wow what a combination Tom Jones soared above and blended at the same time. Beautiful.
Who was the young guy playing bass up there with the drummer? And who's the drummer while we're at it?
