Marc Taimanov besides being a wonderful pianist, was a chess grandmaster during the Soviet Union era . He was on the top ten participating in all the great tournaments.
    An accomplished artist.

That is magnificent-- the mazurka, if that's what it is, rivals the much more famous waltz! Such powerful and assured yet supple and extremely expressive playing is a rare combination.

When heard the waltz movement on the cable classical channel I immediately recognized it. It was used in the great 1956 movie "Anastasia" as the background music for the grand closing scene. It was the perfect choice; so nostalgically and sadly evocative of the elegance of court life in the twilight of Imperial Russia.

Sempre grande fascino e poesia che questo compositore riesce ad esprimere.

The Waltz, magnificent! I can see a ballroom at the Winter Palace...the Tsar and Tarina enter glittering with diamonds and emeralds. A low bow from the gathered aristocrats. DIVINE!

At last a Waltz movement from the Suite No. 1 that is up there with Bauer/Gabrilowitsch, and with much better sound. It requires nonchalant virtuosity, out of which the result is lots of joy!

Perhaps I'm biased but I like the Bauer/Gabrilowitsch much better. The instruments have better tonal quality than these two. Well played tho. I wish the instruments were not so harsh and clangy at times.
