Actually I liked her and Chrissy Amphlett from little known Aussie band The Divinyls. Both had a certain charisma in their performances. I'm biased though.
Timeless! Chrissie Hynde's voice and James Honeyman-Scott's jangly chorused guitar just grabbed everybody's attention when this came out in 1979. Went straight to number #1 in the UK and hit #14 in the US.
Awesome groove and a timeless sound... The word "brass" is a British (mostly northern) slang term for money, usually referring to coins. The term "brass in pocket" in this song refers to the confidence you feel, or the confident front you put on, when you've got a pocket full of cash and you're ready for a night out (obviously in the days before contactless card payments). The song is about someone who's got "brass in pocket", or confidence (or to use another vernacular, "balls") and is trying to get your attention and make an impression.
"Stop Your Sobbing", "Message of Love", and "Talk of the Town" are really good early songs of theirs. The Pretenders as a band had a drastic lineup change after this song was released due to both the bass and lead guitar players dying of drug-related issues. The second incarnation of the band in the early '80s really broke the American market with "Back on the Chain Gang" off their 3rd album.
@Luna Raven Hey girrrrl.Missed you around. Going to try your email add again and see if it works. Hope all good with you sweetie and catch you on the flipside. Love, xx
The three guys who came in were the bass player Pete Farndon (dark hair), guitar player James Honeyman-Scott (light hair), and drummer Martin Chambers (light hair with the killer sideburns). Pete and James both died young, tragically, and close together. Martin is still alive and well, and never left the band. Top notch, all of them. So much respect. Thanks for reacting to them again. ❤
@Monica Chrissie Hynde fired Martin Chambers from The Pretenders when they were recording what eventually became the Get Close! album. Blair Cunningham played drums and toured for Get Close and Packed. Chambers was brought back in for some of the tracks for The Last of the Independents. Chrissie dropped Chambers again and went with studio musicians for two 2000-era albums, though Chambers does still tour when she brings The Pretenders on the road.
@@deadzone5389 That does sound vaguely familiar to me, now that you mention it. How could I not have remembered that? I guess because he still toured with them? Anyway, thanks for the correction! Chambers remains one of my favorite drummers to this day.
When Chrissie says "I've got bottle, I'm going to use it " what she means is "I've got lots of self confidence and that inspires me to take action on what I want" It's old British slang
Oh this song was on all my mixed tapes! Check out Back on the Chain Gang. Chrissie Hind. She’s from Kent, Ohio. She used to work in a diner and I think that’s why they set this video in a diner. She went to England, formed a band and that’s how we got The Pretenders.
Chrissie Hynde. And yes, great voice and versatile, everything from the likes of "Back on the Chain Gang" to the gentler (but more powerful!) "Hymn to Her".
This always takes me back to my 11-year-old self playing this record on my record player over and over and singing my heart out and using my hairbrush as a microphone,I love this song! Great Memories!
Aw. Nostalgia. I used to play this all the time - I so wanted to make a boy at school notice me... (he never did). I was lucky enough to see the band live, though - they were great.
Great Track! Back on the Chain Gang, plus many more. Chrissie Hyndes voice was very popular in my youthful days. She collaborated with many other great artists.
One of my all-time favorite songs is a song by them called "I'll Stand By You" Such a powerful song....binge-watching your videos and loving all of them!!! Stay safe and healthy
I was still in school when this came out. Loved it then. Love it now. Chrissie Hynde was the epitome of cool and she has the most unique voice. Just wonderful. Thanks Jovaughn.
I used to sing this pre-covid on drunken karaoke nights. "DON'T GET ME WRONG" "BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG" "I'LL STAND BY YOU" "IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD" "MY CITY WAS GONE" "TALK OF THE TOWN" "THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE "- A cover that I was surprised by. You have to listen to the original Soul classic by The Intruders(?) Forgotten the name of the group but my Mom has the record.
One of the greatest debut albums of all time. The band also had one of the greatest guitar players of his generation. The song you listened to was the most mainstream song on the album. Some tremendous songs on that first album - sublime and genius.
They have so many classics... and launching new music till these days.... impressive .... before pandemic I had the luck to went to a double concert here in Brazil.... first Pretenders and then Phil Collins .... a special night in Rio’s Maracanã
Pretenders also made one of the best modern Christmas songs called "2,000 Miles (Christmas Time)", so maybe keep this in your back pocket for the holidays.
'Hymn To Her' if you haven't already. Really beautiful song. She performed it acapella style when I saw her with Stevie Nicks a couple years back, and man I was trying so hard not to cry... 😂😭
Chrissie Hynde was on the TV show Friends in 1995 she does perform a song at Central Perk it's season 2 episode 6 called the "One with the Baby on the Bus".
The Pretenders are one of my favorite bands of the 80's. You need to check out their Unplugged performance on MTV. I listen to this all the time, along with Nirvana's Unplugged album.
This was the first UK number one of the 80's! And cafe's like that are called 'Greasy spoons' because the only served 'Greasy' unhealthy foods. They still exist! Great reaction as always!
I can’t tell you how much joy you bring with your channel! The last year has been so shitty but you are helping a lot of people. I know how much you love hearing all of the different instruments. I think a band you may like is The Dave Matthews Band. Their official videos are great, and you should check out a few of those, but they are absolutely one of the best bands live. So if you could please, please, please check them out, I think you’ll be pleased. Thanks again for being who you are and for making the days bearable. 💕
Chrissie Hynde was married to Jim Kerr of Simple Minds and I believe she had a kid with Ray Davies of The Kinks. Ray wrote I Go To Sleep which The Pretenders did a brilliant version of. They also did Back On The Chain Gang.
Back on the Chain Gang My City Was Gone Stop Your Sobbing (my favorite) Middle of the Road Don’t Get Me Wrong I’d thought she’d married Ray Davies, but according to Wikipedia: “Hynde had a daughter, Natalie, in 1983 with Ray Davies of the Kinks.[60] She married Jim Kerr, lead singer of the band Simple Minds, in 1984. Together they had a daughter, Yasmin, in 1985. They lived in South Queensferry, Scotland[60] and divorced in 1990;[60] Hynde then married Colombian artist and sculptor Lucho Brieva in 1997.[60][61] They divorced in 2002.[62]”
The coolness of this song never fades.
Chrissie is simply the definition of natural coolness. It’s who she is. Period. No one like her.
She's special.
I like her
Actually I liked her and Chrissy Amphlett from little known Aussie band The Divinyls. Both had a certain charisma in their performances. I'm biased though.
@@horsefootrot5654 I remember the Divinyls. In the hangover haze of ‘80’s music winding down, I didn’t realize they were an Aussie band.
Naturally classy, sexyy

I also love "my city was gone" and "back on the chain gang" by the Pretenders

Some great songs right there.
Back when MTV was fun. And you could discover great new groups like this.
Pretenders are a great band and Brass in Pocket is indeed a classic. My favorite of all time though is "Talk of the Town".
Mine too, followed by Mystery Achievement.
Absolutely, another good one. heard it today on 1st wave.
Excellent band with a ton of hits 👌🏼
Her voice is one of a kind
Have always loved her voice
Pretenders were great. "2,000 Miles" is wonderful;"Don't get Me Wrong" also great. Can't go wrong with any really.

“Back On the Chain Gang” is another great one - was only listening to it yesterday! 😊
You have no idea what she and the Pretenders are capable of - try Mystery Achievement, Precious, and Tatooed Love Boys. absolutely ROCK DA HOUSE!!!!
Definitely need to react to these balls to the wall rockers!
The first album is full of great songs, hard to choose one.
@@Module79L One of the greatest debut albums of all time, as a matter of fact.
Chrissie is the finest female (and one of the very best of all) rock and roll singers ever!

Back on the Chain Gang!
Chrissie Hynde started as a music critic in England. Someone dared her to try her hand at performing and the rest is history,
Chris is one of the funniest, smartest woman I know and i feel privileged to have spent so much time with her , touring will never be the same 🙏😅

Chrissie Hynde. And yes, great voice and versatile, everything from the likes of "Back on the Chain Gang" to the gentler (but more powerful!) "Hymn to Her".
Hymn to Her and 2000 Miles are two of my favorites, along with Talk of the Town. Her voice is exquisite. Great with strings, too.

Love Chrissy Hynde. One of the great women of rock 'n' roll. Thanks for doing this.
The Pretenders first 2 albums are freaking incredible. You should check out Mystery Achievement.
Her voice is gorgeous. I saw her years ago in concert, amazing. Legend.
Aw. Nostalgia. I used to play this all the time - I so wanted to make a boy at school notice me... (he never did). I was lucky enough to see the band live, though - they were great.

Great song. Saw the pretenders in concert many years ago. Great band. This is one of my favorites 🎶👍
I've had this song in my collection, in every format available since it was first released, such a timeless song, sung by a really cool woman 👍❤️

Loving your constant grin throughout - the same face every child, teenager and grown man (and plenty of women) had in 1979 ;)
My two favorites, Hymn to Her and 2000 miles
Hymn to Her makes me cry. I love it, though. I’m in an abusive relationship with that song! 😂
They have so many classics... and launching new music till these days.... impressive .... before pandemic I had the luck to went to a double concert here in Brazil.... first Pretenders and then Phil Collins .... a special night in Rio’s Maracanã

I saw this band live twice in the '80s. Great shows. I have the vinyl. Love, Love it all!
Pretenders also made one of the best modern Christmas songs called "2,000 Miles (Christmas Time)", so maybe keep this in your back pocket for the holidays.
Also, Talk of the Town with the video. It's their best song, and video, and it's a masterpiece.
I like this song and her eyeliner!
Saw The Pretenders in concert in 1979. This single was number one in the UK at the time. Chrissie made us all feel special then. She still does
I still love this song! I sing it a lot for such an old song
Oh now.......this song is amazing. I remember dancing, working out and running with tune.......oh god I love this song......

I dubbed this onto cassette off the radio early 80s love this tune.
