I don’t buy used because I have no way of knowing how well that guitar is taking care of. And my brain tells me they are dumping off their guitars because is a dud. I’d rather just get it new.
I don’t sell gear either. I’ll leave that for my daughter to do when I’m dead and gone. She can enjoy all the money. I think every parent should leave a nice treasure for their children to either keep or sell off for their interests.

For me, the sweet spot is pulling together all the gear I don’t use and selling for one guitar I really want - clears the clutter and brings home and one new piece of inspiration 🎉

I've owned hundreds and hundreds of guitars, from my guitar flipping days. 99% of the guitars I've sold, I've almost forgotten about. But the 1% I regret selling, those I REALLY regret selling. Probably a dozen of "those that got away". Always had a bad feeling about listing them, but was too blinded by the pursuit of raising cash for something better. You'll know if a guitar is a keeper or not.

how will one know if a guitar is a keeper or not? there's too many stories of folks regretting selling "those that got away". Almost as if they knew "too late / after it got away".

@@aaronashear3002 well I won’t speak for anyone else here but for me it was selling an instrument that I had played for many years because I was “upgrading“ to a brand new custom guitar. I thought that despite all those years playing it that I was really still just in pursuit of a better tool, and while that is true, I failed to recognize how I would feel after selling that guitar. I had small doubts beforehand and I had questioned myself and that’s the feeling that I would at least be able to recognize today. I was actually debating selling my pedal board because of a new piece of gear that I can do everything I need simpler, but after posting it, I got that same kind of feeling And realized I would regret doing that.
So now the main question I ask myself is does this piece of gear inspire me in someway and would I feel sad or bummed out if I didn’t have access to that sound. If the answer is yes, then I really wrestle with selling that piece of gear because it could potentially end up on the retreat list.

Learned the value and appreciation of selling gear at end of 2024. I don't miss the guitars that I didn't play and just hung on the wall. Also the fun of putting together a pedalboard is greater than the frustrations of using it and trying to cover all my bases with it. Leading to multiple iterations etc. Sold all that and got a Quad Cortex and I'm WAY happier and more productive. Also if a guitar isn't "right" it's better to sell it and try something else. Selling my Fenders with noiseless pickups that I've realized i didn't like and replacing with a core Silver Sky that does "Strat" better than any guitar I've tried that isn't at least custom shop level. I will continue ... selling is not an end, it's a gateway into new things.

selling guitars or pedals ticks the exactly same thing as when you buy something - just getting your head around transactions and continuously thinking about gear. it's like reverse consumerism.
the best solution - do neither. just play the stuff.

It's kinda true. I sold my pedalboard with like 8 pedals on it and it was good to move it out. I've sold amps, guitars, PA gear, and in each case I sent through three stages: Stage 1, I'm glad I did it. Stage 2, wait, did I make a mistake? Stage 3, nope, I'm glad I did it.

What really stings is when you get a piece of dream gear, not really know how to set it up correctly or never get that right guitar/amp pairing with it but have to sell it to get that next piece of gear. You then learn a couple years later what you did wrong in setting it up and the value shoots through the roof so you can no longer afford it.

I bought a dream strat in 2003 and sold it in 2008 , I still regret it till this day. No other guitar has ever compared to it, it may be a nostalgic memory, I had player a lot of gigs with that strat, it went to college with me , I only sold it so I could pay rent and student loan, I was in a desperate space, there's a lot of gear I wish I still had when I had just started playing guitar, as I think I sounded better and had much more fun when I had my old DOD , boss, Ehx pedals, nowadays I've gone with similar state of gear I had back then, one amp , 2 guitars, 4 pedals (one is a tuner), I think happiness is key here , as long as all the gear makes you happy and a better player , than carry on.

I hardly ever buy gear, but I bought a new multi-effects that I'd been thinking about for a year. I just wanted to see how it would sound with my rig at home and I knew it was a bit of a gamble. I justified the purchase as a rental, and when I sold it after several months I'd lost about £40 on the whole transaction. It seemed a fair price to have an unlimited amount of time to play about with a piece of kit at home, without the pressure of trying it in store. I'd probably do the same again another time, just to scratch the itch.

I just went through this. I made a couple of pedalboards a number of years ago and never used them because I got sick and had to retire. I was terrified of taking them off the pedalboard because of damaging the pedals. I then saw a RUclips video of how to get the pedals off without damaging them so I tried it on one of the cheaper pedals and it worked perfectly so I took all the pedals off the board and sold them. Most even though old, were hardly used because they never left my house, in fact they never left the room I put them in. I don't regret selling them at all because I never used them. In regards to selling guitars I can only think of two that I truly regret selling and only 3 amps. On the other hand now I don't have to worry about changing tubes or having the issues that tube amps have.I must admit when I sold them and got the money in the bank it felt really good and now I can walk in my music room without tripping over a bunch of shit. 😂

I only sold gear when I was younger and tight on money, or when I had to get rid of gear because I was moving abroad, otherwise I find it too difficult to let stuff go.
The only things I wish I hadn't have to get rid of are an Eganater Tweaker15, and a Laney 1x12 cab with a Tayden True Brit

I could never bond with modelers until recently … I found a chain that works for me … East River Drive -> Pod Express -> Foxgear Squeeze -> Zoom Multistomp.-> Fender FR 12. A modular modeler if you will. Now all of my analog gear is up for sale … my Quilter and all the pedals that are worth anything. I actually keep a spreadsheet of OUT and IN and attempt to keep purchases “revenue neutral.” Wish I could post snapshots.

It's good advice, I spent the second half of last year selling off a parallel setup (HX stomp and effects setup) that was distracting me from my proper writing/recording setup. I have more physical and mental space as a result and some other people got some new gear at a good price. And I am writing more and playing with more focus.

I went through this in 2023. I really had too much gear, a lot not being used or played. I’m down to 5 guitars, 3 amps & 6 pedals, that’s it. At the time I was fortunate to either get my money back or make a profit. The only gear I bought back, a Boss Blues Driver, a Maxon TS808, & a Marshall Bluesbreaker reissue, all of which I missed having. However, I never buried the GAS monkey, he still makes me look at eBay & Reverb regularly. 🥴

Too many people just don’t put the effort into really working out what they want before they buy it. They buy to try ....and end up selling and repeating. Just decide what you want, save up and buy it. Stop fannying around with the latest shiny and work out what you really want or need
