Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me!
"I attack the darkness!!!" Honestly those dudes are doing a great job "selling" the new subclasses. As someone who's mostly a dm, im kind of happy that i don't have to make the choice between all those great class options
Right, so the Gloom Stalker is basicly the guy that figured out Darkvision == colourblind and uses camouflage to mesh with the surroundings the same way a regular ranger does with foliage.
“Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me!” - Bane
Love that this is no longer specifically tied to the underdark thematically. Also really stoked to use the invisible to dark vision stuff as both a player and a DM.
Dude. The scene from Silence of the Lambs when Bill is standing next to Jodie Foster in the pitch black with night vision goggles on...thats what I envision
Currently playing the Gloom Stalker, without a doubt the best ranger archetype I have ever played since Deepwood sniper prestige class in 3.5 She’s a drow, she’s lethal and as they point out at higher levels terrifying :3
My Drow Deep Stalker in Out of the abyss used his skills to murder dozens of deep gnomes in the warrens and planted the legend of a what is essentially batman. So I'm excited to see thw gloomstalker changes
My new campaign I joined I joined with a gloomstalker drow. I’m fairly new to dnd. It’s good to know that my impression that drow and the gloomstalker were very much being built around each other was spot on. Obviously there is other optimal races for it but it very much suited the drow, thematically, too much for me to not have a suspicion. Anyway, I’m excited to use it for the first time! I don’t plan to make my ranger very scary though. Drow, sure, but I plan to make him a nervous ball of social anxiety and hopefully it comes off adorable in a way. Remains to be seen. I’m hoping the campaign goes well. We are doing Icewind Dale for the campaign. No one give me hints! I took a rough look so I know there is drow somewhere in there (keyword searching to find drow lore in all the books pointed it out to me) but I don’t want to know the context of it just yet. I hope all goes well. Session 0 gives me a good impression so far! Oh but this does give me an idea to file away for dm’ing in the future. What about a shopkeeper in a big city, or someone with those skills, who the party later figure out is a gloomstalker ranger, that is, if they figure it out before it’s too late. Fun~….yup, when I feel confident enough to dm I’m using that.
Drow bandits:"Ha ha ha, you're on our home turf now! Prepare to meet your demize!" Gloom stalker:"You think darkness is your ally? Fools! You merly adopted the darkness, I was born in it, molded by it, and I didn't see daylight until I was a man!"
Problem I found with it in playtesting is that it was extremely powerful in darkness, but outside of it you are a worse off Ranger. My DM quickly realized he needed to have all caves conspicuously lit around where the bosses were
Darkness and darkvision have always had that. It's just that a lot of players never realized the "trick" about darkvision. While darkvision allows you to see, it's colourblind. You only see in shades of grey. So you're losing a LOT of aspects to your sight. And it is incredibly easy to blend in or hide stuff the moment you realize that aspect of it. Clever application of lighting has always been an important thing once you realized that part of it. And any intelligent "boss"-type creature would be aware of these shortcomings and plan accordingly. Whether it is through use of lighting or through use of other sensory detection. Those "guard dogs" (or local equivalent) with scent or other abilities are there for a reason... Just because they can't **SEE** you in the darkness doesn't mean they can't SENSE you.
For a lot of these that I have watched, I've been re-reading their original UA appearance as well as watching the video. The whole "Cannot be seen in Darkness without senses more adept than Darkvision" thing doesn't even begin to appear related to anything in the Dark Stalker's UA appearance. Quite intrigued to see which of its traits is replaced or modified into that.
True, but that "should" only be one or two players in any group. Running with fellow players who picked it up in our Out of the Abyss campaign, so well aware. Also has no use vs blindsight, so druids with Earth Elemental or even Giant Spider nullify this as well.
i made a lvl 9 multiclass using the gloom stalker. lvl 4 shadow sorcerer and lvl 5 gloom stalker. variant human for an extra feat and this character terrifies me. stats arent great given that its all feats so far and used the basic point system but damn. designed to be quick skirmisher/harasser. 2 weapon fighting (scimitars), medium armor master puts AC at 18 with half plate and no disadvantage to stealth, spells are all utility/defense (ie. blur, mirror image, fog cloud, misty step, zephyr strike) so spell dc or modifier are nearly irrelevant. super excited to play it. other feats are tough and war caster.
Damn well that's 3 ranger subclasses so I guess I can give up hope on Primeval Guardian. I was really hoping to make a bugbear polearm primeval guardian and have 20 foot reach
Perfect! I just made my little dwarf ranger, I think this fits him perfectly. Basically a smaller version of Riddick. _You are not affraid of the dark, are you?_ and then I drop the torch... xD
my character is a lvl 3 rogue that is multiclassing into ranger because she uses her bow a crazy amount, because of her rogue history i am making her a gloomstalker, gonna be fun
I really really hope it kept all it 3rd level abilities and spell disguise self, cause I just made the change from a hunter ranger to a gloom stalker ranger, as the deep stalker it just fit my character better a Green Dragonborn (now) gloom stalker ranger/ Oath of vengeance Paladin Charlton, champion of Bahamut.
“Ah you think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding!”
"Ahhh, you think darkness is your ally. You merely adopted the dark. I was BORN in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until i was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to ME!"
I can imagine this scenario happening in a group I go to. My dragonborn stomps around waving her torch before saying to the rest of the party (all have darkvision) 'hey guys, there's someone in here'.
Wait, all this talking of hiding in darkness, urban environments, terror, etc, and Jeremy managed to not mention Batman even once? I couldn't think of anybody else while he was describing the class.
That is something different, darkvision amplifies the little light there is to see better at darkness, like cats eyes. The Gloom Stalke seems to bend the little light around himself and becomes invisible for them
It's even simpler than that. Darkvision allows you to see, but not see colour. You're seeing contrast in shades of grey while certain colours look exactly the same. As long as Darkvision has been a thing, this has been the case. Making it a massive loophole that players using Darkvision tend to overlook. "Oh hey - everyone has darkvision, guess we don't need a lightsource." Except, dungeons can have coloured aspects that would totally be missed by a darkvision party. This guy just uses camouflage to blend into that darkness the way a regular ranged blends into foliage.
So will this subclass give you darkvision if you're a race that doesn't have it? Or cast darkvision on yourself before you get second level spells at level 5? I'm intrigued by the idea of being the only halfling with darkvision.
Drow vs. Svirfneblin!!! They already played this scenario out. But the little guys lost the battle/invasion of Blingdenstone, ended up retreating, and then fled to Mithral Hall to stay with the Dwarves
Something I wonder about the revised ranger. Are the conclaves the same as the archetype or are they different. Like if I pick a conclave is that the same as picking a archetype or do you chose both.
Glad they're giving the ranger 3 new subclasses. Fingers crossed on them giving those revised features as options, but the tables are turning on the Ranger being underpowered and/or stale
I have a question about the gloom stalker. I am, playing one and when I get into darkness for a ambush, the DM imposes disadvantage on my attack roles. How can the gloom stalker be good at ambushes if they have disadvantage on attack roles in darkness? Is my DM correct in this?
Did they give a reason why they imposed disadvantage on you? The class gives you darkvision, so you should be able to see your target no matter what your race is.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's a wrong call. Being completely blind gives you disadvantage, so there wouldn't be much reason to even care about darkvision if that gave you disadvantage too.
Two gloom stalkers try to rendezvous in the dark, but can't find each other...
That sounds like the setup for a joke
Guys! None of you showed up for our gloom stalker meeting.
"Wait! I was there!"
"Me too!"
"So was I! What the hell?"
....
Just say "Hello ow".
"We made a class that fixes the fact that we gave darkvision to everyone and everything."
CJWproductions also, the Rope Trick spell cannot be used for hiding because of the stupid rope dangling in the air.
Reed Gibson holy crap, you’re right. I take my words back, then.
Yup
Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me!
Bane?
Петр Петров The masked man?
"I attack the darkness!!!"
Honestly those dudes are doing a great job "selling" the new subclasses. As someone who's mostly a dm, im kind of happy that i don't have to make the choice between all those great class options
*archetypes not classes :)
"I am the darkness! Don't hurt me!"
You're suited to get a chance to try anything you want!
It's adorable how much he loves this class. Most of these new classes, they obviously like them, but this guy is giddy about the gloomstalker, lol.
To be honest (as someone who's rolled one) it's a really good sub-class that kinda makes Ranger way more worth it
I am vengeance.
I am the night.
I. AM. GLOOM STALKER!
Personality trait: "I AM the monster under the bed."
Me? Mad? (laugh) Quite likely.
Right, so the Gloom Stalker is basicly the guy that figured out Darkvision == colourblind and uses camouflage to mesh with the surroundings the same way a regular ranger does with foliage.
So batman
batman mearly adopted the darkness
“Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me!” - Bane
Love that this is no longer specifically tied to the underdark thematically. Also really stoked to use the invisible to dark vision stuff as both a player and a DM.
Finally, I can make Riddick...
They made Riddick a class in D&D.
Dude. The scene from Silence of the Lambs when Bill is standing next to Jodie Foster in the pitch black with night vision goggles on...thats what I envision
Currently playing the Gloom Stalker, without a doubt the best ranger archetype I have ever played since Deepwood sniper prestige class in 3.5
She’s a drow, she’s lethal and as they point out at higher levels terrifying :3
oh boi Ranger: gloomstalker + monk: way of shadows + Rouge: assassin here i come
Depending how that goes, someone's either not going to get the dankest abilities of one or not a lot of ASIs lol
There is a makeup assassin?
congrats you are the most goth boy in the tavern
An aarakocra gloom stalker is the terror that flaps in the night.
"You think the darkness is your ally?"
Bane: “You think darkness is your ally”
Gloom stalker Batman: “Yes”
Gloom Stalker sounds like it would make a good Batman
Cayotick Gloom Stalker Ranger + Vengence Paladin multiclass = Batman.
The gloom stalker sounds like a shadowfell creature in a certain twitch stream. Hmmm...
That's where I heard it!
My group just started a new campaign last week.
I can't wait to explore my new Halfling Gloom Stalker!
I absolutely love how excited he is talking about this class, this is normally Mike Mearls domain :P
if a gloom stalker with dark vision looks into a mirror in the dark, do they see anything?
yes. darkness.
I love that we have a nature rogue (Scout) and an urban ranger now (Gloom Stalker).
Wood Elf, Gloom Stalker.. Fiend hunter (preferred enemy), looking forward to playing this character in our new campaign. BRING IT!
You only adopted the dark.....I was born in it...Molded by it....
My Drow Deep Stalker in Out of the abyss used his skills to murder dozens of deep gnomes in the warrens and planted the legend of a what is essentially batman.
So I'm excited to see thw gloomstalker changes
Your enunciation was dope in this video. Great progress, man!
My new campaign I joined I joined with a gloomstalker drow. I’m fairly new to dnd. I have a feeling this guy likes the Gloom Stalker
Drow bandits:"Ha ha ha, you're on our home turf now! Prepare to meet your demize!"
Gloom stalker:"You think darkness is your ally? Fools! You merly adopted the darkness, I was born in it, molded by it, and I didn't see daylight until I was a man!"
that makes no sense because you used Drow as your bad guys
This WILL make a fine villain indeed.
Problem I found with it in playtesting is that it was extremely powerful in darkness, but outside of it you are a worse off Ranger. My DM quickly realized he needed to have all caves conspicuously lit around where the bosses were

Drow Arnold Schwarzenegger vs Mindflayer Predator?
I totally saw the same reference when he brought it up! Awesome.
Had a triton gloom stalker in a game of mine. Dude was a monster in deep water.
For a lot of these that I have watched, I've been re-reading their original UA appearance as well as watching the video. Yes! Deep Stalker! Half-drow ranger is a-go!
Good point with the use by DMs... can't wait to troll how common the group comprised of all darkvision characters has gotten.
Chaz Rambone a warlock with devil's sight will still see them. It see through magical darkness as well and only can't peer through invisibility
True, but that "should" only be one or two players in any group. Running with fellow players who picked it up in our Out of the Abyss campaign, so well aware.
Also has no use vs blindsight, so druids with Earth Elemental or even Giant Spider nullify this as well.
Thats my Wolf Bandit Ranger in Humblewood Fenrir Fangthon. Tormenting the perch guards in the Crest Mountains.
i made a lvl 9 multiclass using the gloom stalker. lvl 4 shadow sorcerer and lvl 5 gloom stalker. variant human for an extra feat and this character terrifies me. stats arent great given that its all feats so far and used the basic point system but damn. designed to be quick skirmisher/harasser.
You can still do it not in AL but it works
It was too overpowered as a near-stationary tank for them to allow lol
The list of subclasses in the book have been out for some time now. :)
Serves you right pathetic power player.
well that seems needlessly aggressive
Well. This sounds absolutely badass.
The Gloom Starker is the most interesting of all of them three new archetypes in Xanather's Guide.
Perfect! I just made my little dwarf ranger, I think this fits him perfectly. Basically a smaller version of Riddick. _You are not affraid of the dark, are you?_ and then I drop the torch... xD

A multiclass gloom stalker with any amount of rogue sounds incredible.
Brb goanna go make my Rogue/Ranger Drow with this
Marcus Wolfblood *Ranger level 12 (Gloomstalker)/ Rouge 4(Scout)* *laughes in 90ft if Darkvision*
Oh no they made Batman!
cant wait till 21 Nov man
Gloomstalker shadow monk assassin
...or just a regular Ranger in Hollow World
This subclass sounds amazing.

You think the darkness is your ally? I was born to it, raised by it...
Wait, all this talking of hiding in darkness, urban environments, terror, etc, and Jeremy managed to not mention Batman even once? I couldn't think of anybody else while he was describing the class.
Hello darkness my old friend
This is EPIC!!! Give rogue shadow dancer and i will never ask for anything else now!
The Batman sub-class. Turning things that love the dark into things that are afraid of it.
Depending on leveling, assassin gloomstalker shadow dancer would be a horrible threat
Hey! My wish was granted!
Way I view Darkvision is thermal imaging, so a ranger who blocks their heat signature would explain the invisibility.
That is something different, darkvision amplifies the little light there is to see better at darkness, like cats eyes. The Gloom Stalke seems to bend the little light around himself and becomes invisible for them
DarkVision is thought to be similar to Night Vision Goggles in terms of what stuff looks like.
exactly... see: Narbondel
Two completely different things
It's even simpler than that. Darkvision allows you to see, but not see colour. You're seeing contrast in shades of grey while certain colours look exactly the same.

*DRIZZT INTENSIFIES*
What? Why?
edheldude this was literally what he was in the underdark trilogy.
I wanna be the guy that laughs manically right behind the group of loincloth-shitting goblins. I wanna be that person irl.
I want to play in a game With A Shadow Sorcerer,Way of Shadow Monk , and Gloom Stalker .
Gloom Stalker Ranger + Vengeance Paladin = Batman
Gloomstalker deepgnome: I'm batman.
So will this subclass give you darkvision if you're a race that doesn't have it? Or cast darkvision on yourself before you get second level spells at level 5? I'm intrigued by the idea of being the only halfling with darkvision.
So a shadow monk with spells, nice.
This would be an awesome class to build a ninja.
who knows the evil that lurks beneath the hearts of men the shadow knows
My Deep Stalker NPC is the worshipper of a god of murder, so he is kind of an evil paladin in a way.
Wouldn't we all like to have a little assassin in us?
I think ive found my next character class. Imma call him/her Dis Ra'nggurrr
Riddick the Gloom Ranger
i need to play this!
Does it fool the superior darkvision that warlocks get? If so oh damn
YOU THOUGHT THE DARKNESS WAS YOUR ALLY??
So we can play Batman now?
Vengeance paladin gloomstalker, I can't imagine
so... Gloom Stalker vs. Gloom Stalker, can they see each other?
nope
Drow vs. Svirfneblin!!!
They already played this scenario out. But the little guys lost the battle/invasion of Blingdenstone, ended up retreating, and then fled to Mithral Hall to stay with the Dwarves
I want NOW!
Sounds awesome. Need more wizard pls
Something I wonder about the revised ranger. Are the conclaves the same as the archetype or are they different. Like if I pick a conclave is that the same as picking a archetype or do you chose both.
I was slightly disappointed that this subclass didn't get the Darkness spell as an additional spell.
why would they need it?
If your a drow you get darkness at 5th level.
It's okay Wizards, We all have Drizztboners
Glad they're giving the ranger 3 new subclasses. Fingers crossed on them giving those revised features as options, but the tables are turning on the Ranger being underpowered and/or stale
Do you still become proficient in Wisdom saving throws?
I'm gonna make a Gloomstalker Dwelf
Duegar GloomStalker.. epic tales are expected
Well, the DM said that fighting with only darkvision means I have to fight at disadvantage.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's a wrong call. Being completely blind gives you disadvantage, so there wouldn't be much reason to even care about darkvision if that gave you disadvantage too.
When you level up to Sneak 100 in Skyrim
Are you afraid of the dark?
You will be.
So..... basically.... BATMAN!!!!!!
I cast Magic Missile! I attack the darkness!
So they are invisible when they are in the dark?
Batman. You've created Batman.
Gloom Stalker/ Hand Monk Multiclass = Batman?
Sooo... super situational stealth.
