- Following the Foxfield Railway's Summer Steam Gala, July 22nd 2018, Bellerophon, was withdrawn for its ten year boiler overhaul. Bearing all its Victorian elegance it was built in 1874 by Haydock Foundry, near St Helens, Lancashire, it worked at Haydock Collieries. After a working life of ninety years, Berllerophon finally retired in 1964 since when it has been a popular engine, running on a number of heritage railways. Its exploits on the 1 in 19 Foxfield Bank have become legendary for a locomotive nearly 150 years old.
A video of Foxfield Summer Steam Gala 2018 can be seen on: • OPENING DAY OF THE FOX...
It’s so cool to see a machine that’s well older than any person alive today still in running order. Hope somebody with knowledge and finances gets it back on the rails. Some objects tend to develop a “soul” of sorts, something that just refuses to fall silent. This locomotive has to be one of them.
I see a chad
the amount of people this machine helped ( to heat their homes, feed families, delivering all sorts of goods) is amazing! imagine how important just one machine is for it's home country and even worldwide. its a venerable task. it's great to see these old simple and strong still able to do what it was designed to do. stands testament to the men that built it as well. nice of you for posting this ! thank you!
Wonderful to see these old steam locomotives preserved and running. 👍
Having taken several fan trips in the UK, some of oldest equipment still running can be seen there. Some are main line trips which surprised me; Even the London underground has vintage trips to the suburbs on weekends at certain times of the year. The Bluebell was my favorite, running on a dedicated rail with even a tunnel on the route. Takes lots of volunteers to keep them all going.
These are truly prices of mechanical art! Something so stoic yet classy about the designs of these engines.
To me, it's the most remarkable machine ever invented ,I LOVE THEM
Gorgeous!
In June 1970 I spent a great day with a German 0-6-0T with similar outside Stephenson, running at Achern(?)
Love the crane loco too!
“Eh? What’s that Sonny?” Jokes aside, I love this guy/old gal. Truly beautiful majestic locomotive in its own right :)
Stellar presentation. Thanks for sharing. :)
Wonderful exhaust sounds ... great video thanks for sharing
Bust my buffers that’s one sharp loco!
You just predicted this engine to become an official Thomas Character.
That's TTTE talk. My poor childhood. Refers to AEG. I grew up with model TTTE.
I love you Bellerophon
Imagine some kid watches this video and talks about how much these engines look like they’re from Thomas.
It happens more than is necessary. Its nice that kids are getting into trains and all but sometimes it does get a little annoying seeing all the Thomas references.
Thanks Alan. Always a favourite of mine.
Noel
And mine too Noel. An amazing locomotive. Regards Alan
This is Sonny's basis for the new Thomas & Friends double length episodic special, Marvelous Machinery :)
I knew it
Thanks for sharing this! Very nice camera work. Self propelled steam crane is an interesting piece as well
What a beautiful old locomotive, and that valve gear is something to behold, and that engine / crane is the craziest thing I have ever seen.
Yes, she's lovely. We're eagerly awaiting her return someday.
I JUST LOVE THAT STEAM ENGINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great footage! Such a cute little engine
Thank you. Yes, cute is a good word for her.
@@Parsound In a rail context, cute's for tank engines only, IMO.
I know of two steam loco,s that were built in the 1860,s, this one was a few years later. But i Really hope it will get a new boiler and steam again for all to enjoy! They are wonderful machines fascinating to watch!
Wow!, that is Amazing.
Looks so beautiful ❤️😍😊
It's just something so cool about locomotives and then I remember being a young man and running down to the train tracks to watch the locomotives. Maybe it's the raw power or the beautiful precision of engineering. But I think most boys are just drawn to these majestic beauties
I'm sorry to hear that they retired that beautiful old locomotive. I really enjoyed your video and subscribed. Thanks for sharing...Wilmer
Arguably Wilmer, the most popular industrial locomotive in the UK. Hopefully she won't be away too long. Thank you for subscribing and for your kind comments. Regards Alan
She will return in time for her 150th Birthday in 2024.
Thank you for that Nigel. As an 80 year old I hope that I'll still be around! Alan
I have to say.. She is the most beautiful lady I have ever seen
Excellent video !!!
That engine doesn’t look a day over 70 years old, it’s in such great shape.
great video alan
Great sounding locomotive.
Sonny & Harvey
i DO HOPE THAT THIS LOCO GETS BOILER OVERHAUL AND CERTIFICATE TO STEAM AGAIN
Me to
Keep them ALIVE!
@@dunxy so right
@@dunxy No, we have too many problems with global warming and climate change. These polluting locos must now be broken up for scrap with cutting torches, and the debris melted in the induction furnaces. Then we can make cleaner carbon neutral traction.
@@PreservationEnthusiast no no
Steam locos BARLEY pollute
Deisel locomotives and cars polite WAY more steam locomotives would be better
neat to see this old stuff (from usa) :)
It's pretty normal for a loco of any age to withdrawn from traffic when the 10 or 7 year boiler ticket runs out till they can get a new boiler ticket it's not really a big deal but still a lovely loco
The same thing happened to the 1850 built American loco, the william mason, which had it's boiler replaced in 1927 apparently they with drew it because the firebox is too thin, after they did the most recent inspection. Now for the last 3 years its on static display. They instead run the tiny 4-2-0 Lafayette replica that was built in the 30's
I love the rhythm of that loco. I think it's the only working loco with Gooch valve gear isn't it?
I wouldn't be surprised. Does anyone out there know different?
@@Parsound Isn't it Allen Straight Link gear?
@@newhavenneil Bellerophon's valve gear is described as Gooch, i.e.Stephenson as modified by Gooch. Wikipedia describes them, plus Allan, far better than I can. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephenson_valve_gear

@@Parsound incase this hasnt been answered im not 100% thats its the only one but it is the oldest one, its going to be steaming again this year if all things go to plan!
What a beautiful machine. Thank you so much for the great video. I just subscribed!
Thank you for your kind comment and subscription. Alan
May I ask you a question? This video was published 15 months ago and until four days ago had received 28,000 views. In the last three days it has more than doubled that including 18,000 yesterday. My question, why did you chose to view it, has it been publicized somewhere? I am really curious and look forward to your reply. Regards Alan
@@Parsound Sorry for taking such a long while to answer your question. I was just cruising RUclips and your thumbnail caught my eye. I'm glad that I watched your video. Will be watching more. By the way, your photography/videogrophy is excellent!! And HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Спасибо тем, кто хранит это чудо!!!
@Emanuel Damian Ты дурак!
What a great little locomotive. 1 in 19 grade... That's crazy!
What does on in 1 in 19 mean?
@@MrBeeps. that's the steepness of the grade. It means it rises one unit vertically for every 19 units horizontally. Eg, 1 metre up for every 19 metres travelled horizontally. This is very steep for a locomotive.
@@michaelclark2840 thanks
After Many years as a monument loco,
QGR A10 0-4-2, 10 inch cylinders, was sent back to Ipswich Railway Workshops, where it had been assembled in 1865 ( Nielsen built), for the QGR. It served first as a light Passenger engine, then as a contractor's engine for railway building, all over Queensland till the 1920s, then retired to Roma Street Station ( Brisbane) with two of its original passengercars.
Later a change to Limestone Park, Ipswich again as an outside monument. Finally to the Ipswich
Workshops Museum, where it was rebuilt, and put into Heritage Service,
Now in 2020 ( 155 years old, still running..).no boiler problems thanks to The Workshops Museum.
Thomas and friends is known to put trains that are out of service into their show
@Sunshine The Tug well sony isn't that bad
Super footage of this great little loco Alan, that final assualt gave me goose bumps. Regards, Brian.
Thanks Brian, great indeed. Regards Alan
In Thomas & Friends, Sonny is based on this engine
Beautiful machine.
Kool loco even more unusual was that crane loco!
I have a hunch that's what Harvey the Crane Engine was based from in Thomas and Friends if it was this engine correct me if I'm wrong
@@TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan you're correct
SteamGent was that crane loco assisting the main engine?
@@TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan Different locomotive, but the same concept of a crane tank engine
Harvey?
Great little engine
Hey, it's Sonny.
Great to see that people care enough to preserve steam trains like this. It reminds us of the advancements we have made.
The so called advancements, are they really advancements. Nothing manufactured today will last as long as these machine have. In this so called modern world we have really lost our way
@@crazyhorsetrading8655 ain't that the truth
In village old diesel engine sound is yet popular. Like that steam engine arrive, passing, and passed away sound very natural effects to one who able to understand this things.
As an old fasioned engineer all my working life I hate to see any machinery in a museum gathering dust. It's like looking at a corpse. I wonder how many of the 30,000 odd steam trains are in use. Three who commented felt the need to go one better. Why ? The title reads 'ONE OF THE........ We invented these beasts, made the fastest and still make them. Must be mad - I hope so.
Too bad the series is over, this gave me an idea for an episode about Sonny and Harvey working together.
I saw that engine whilst it was on the seven valley railway for the spring steam gala
Scott Whiley same
yeah same
1:20 oh my god that steam
Bad firing practice
@Merlin and Murdoch Fan 783 you should see the Japanese steam engines, they produce WAY MORE than that!
You know this deserves Adam colhouns song old trains over it. Matches it pretty well.
Invisibility! ONNNNNNNNN
@Mr Filmers haha! Yes!
God gift to the humanity.great efforts and creativity of those engineers given to days railways to the mankind to enjoy.may god bless and give place in heaven to those creative engineers.
I went on her a couple of years ago.
Lucky you 👍
That’s Sonny from Thomas and friends marvelous machinery
Sonny was the only good thing about MM
Nice
my left ear loved this
Locomotiva linda e fantástica. Abraço! Rio Brazil
Gracias por comentar Sí, de hecho lo es
Great video, great sounds. In New Zealand we do have a small steam engine A67 it was built around that same year, ( not sure exactly of the year ) and it is still in operating condition to the best of my knowledge.
Thank you for your interesting comment Barry..
@@Parsound, A67 was built in 1873 by Dubs and Co, it is the oldest operating steam loco in New Zealand.
A 67 is presently out of action, midway through a 10 year inspection
A 64 is a couple of months younger & in running order
and F 13 is a bit older and a runner :)
its interisting to see a "harvey " reference hint, acting as a banker .:) i hope she is able to be able to steam again in all her glory.
Wonderful engine.
Cool to see Harvey helping out! Hahaha
Очень красивые локомотивы. Я приятно удивлён. Удачи Вам.
Sonny's second chance as a steam engine to live on and not be scrapped
Steam locos shall be sliced with cutting torches and recycled as scrap.
SONNY FROM MARVELOUS MACHINERY !?!?!?!.!?!?
Stevensons link motion is very common on traction engines, but you don't see it on railway locos very often. They usually opted for something that only needed one link, rather than a pair. Keep the width down. Nice old machine. It'll be back.
Excelent work this steam.engine
What a beautiful loco, the Gooch valve gear is really interesting to watch, hopefully Bellerophon comes back sometime in the not too distant future.
Yes, she's a beauty. I understand that she will return but I've no idea when.
@@Parsound Good to hear. I don't mind static locomotives a bit, since it's quite reasonable that some locos not run into the ground, however something as fascinatingly gorgeous as that really does need to be appreciated in motion.
Excellent shots by the way!
@@RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS 'Bella' certainly looks great on the move. She is so popular I can't see it being too long before she returns. Thanks for your kind words. Alan
Sonny and Harvey hard at work!
hello sonny
Awesome enjoy watching. A shame it can’t run anymore til rebuild is boiler. Rebuild it. Thanks 🙏
This must be the original Model of Sonny from "Thomas and Friends"!
It is a marvelous engine
When im an adult, i might be a train engineer and if i succeed, I'm gonna buy this train
Alternate title: Sonny retires.mp4
Awesome video and it's sonny's basis
Now where have i seen this elegant and a beauty of a machine?
*Oh yes, the shitty season 24 of Thomas and Friends.*
Still a very nice looking locomotive
I would have loved to see that steam derrick in operation!
Sonny be working
Delightful. Always a favourite of mine. Interesting-the ink is actually straight on this engine?
I first saw Bellerophon at Howarth on a siding in the early '70's painted brown. Strangely she suited it.
A fabulously charismatic loco.I hope that she is back in steam soon.
I can't recall seeing her in brown but from photos I can say that she looked most elegant. I don't normally get excited about industrial locos but this one is very special.
@@Parsound I have a pic of her at Howarth.
I remember some old car mechanic saying that you can tell the condition of the rings by the interval. Listen and if you have a frequency analyzer app on your Smartphone you might see some interesting things.
Beattie well tank for older than this
Same year 1874
The featured loco is cool, but that loco/crane/Derrick/espresso etc. thing is without a doubt one of the neatest rail contraptions I’ve ever seen! Would love to know more about it! Nothing like that in the states!
There were a number operating in the UK in the old days. On the one in the video the jib rotates but does not elevate. It was built by Dubs.
@@Parsound thanks for the reply! I’m going to scour the inter web for more info! I’m fascinated! Have a blessed day!
Oh yes there is stuff like this in the states. There is a very large steam crane loco at Antique Powerland in Brooks Oregon as a matter of fact.
Sonny pulling and Harvey pushing
I would love to run a steamer on a heritage railway
Older than my great grandparents by 14 years!!!
What a beauty, where is it kept?
I remember this engine visiting our railway in Belgium. I think this was round the year 2000. In mostly remember how slow the injectors were.
I think it is the oldest engine to have piston valves?
In Sweden we have "prince August" still working since 1856! Of course some details has been changed out to repair but so it does for older steam locomotive.
Music of double banked steam engines with different wheel diameters perfect descant harmony
i swear to god every video of a cool old steam train has that specifically one person in the comment section saying they need to be scrapped
sonny is loudest steam locomotive there is in my opinion
ok
Bloody good engineering back then
Horrible black smoke, not the best fireing. Compared to the pre preservation condition Bellerophon was in in the 1970’s at the KWVLR waiting her turn for restoration and the funds needed she looks great. Thank you to all those carrying the torch forward for future generations.
We simply can't let her lay down and die, engine has just come to far
In Austria a locomotive which was built in 1851 still runs today.
Haha, the sound reminds me of the trains in RDRII
I live 30 minutes away from A10 6 the oldest operational steam locomotive in the Southern Hemisphere. Built in 1865 she is 155 years old. It’s always a sad sight to see an engine being withdrawn 😔
Relax those oltimers just need sometimes a decade of rest and recuperation
This summer the oldest and first steam cogwheel engine ever build by SLM in Switserland was again in service for the 150 year aniversery of the cogwheel railway.
Another 19 century engine (1887 Hohenzollern) was last year put back into service after mayor overhaul.
it ran 100 years in continious service on several coalmine sites in Germany and is identical too 12 engines bought by of the Dutch state railroad in that time.
Now its engine nr 13 in the class in Dutch national railways colors and hauls passenger trains on a heritage railway.
btwhow old is this train compared to No.1 talyllyn?
Actually Furness Railway No. 20 was the oldest engine to steam this year but was also withdrawn this year.
