  • Video I put together for the very rare "Banning The Rules Mix" of Jimmy Somerville's first solo single- a duet with June Miles-Kingston. This 12" version was never released commercially, and is hard to find as it shares the catalog number with the widely available "Commercial Mix". It was also overlooked for inclusion on the remastered re-issue campaign of Jimmy's back catalogue.
I used excerpts of the official video mixed with performance footage from the UK TV debut of the song. Joining Jimmy & June on stage for this performance is Dr. Robert (keyboard) & Barbara Snow (trumpet), both from the Blow Monkeys.
The song was originally recorded in English by Margaret Whiting, but it was the French language version recorded by Francoise Hardy that made it a hit in 1968. She also released versions in German and Italian, ensuring wide European exposure.
Jimmy and producer Pascal Gabriel were hesitant to release the song ahead of the album, "Read My Lips", but as work was completed on that record it was the obvious stand-out track and the decision was made to first release an underground, anonymous twelve-inch to hopefully bypass the homophobic elitist DJ's and critics ready to ignore Jimmy's releases. That record caught on in many holiday destinations across Europe, and Brits returning home were eager to buy it as a souvenir of their time in Ibizia and the Mediterranean, sending the track to no. 14 in the UK and top twenties in several European territories. It's highest chart placement was number 3 in Ireland, and perhaps predictably, France.
    Lyrics:
    Me résoudre aux adieux.
Je sais bien qu'un ex amour n'a pas de chance,
    Ou si peu,
Mais pour moi un explication voudrait mieux.
Sous aucun prétexte je ne veux
    Devant toi surexposer mes yeux,
Derrière un kleenex je saurais mieux
    Comment te dire adieu,
    Comment te dire adieu.
Tu as mis a l'index nos nuits blanches,
    Nos matins gris-bleu,
Mais pour moi un explication voudrait mieux.
Sous aucun prétexte je ne veux
    Devant toi surexposer mes yeux,
Derrière un kleenex je saurais mieux
    Comment te dire adieu,
    Comment te dire adieu,
    Comment te dire adieu.
Literal translation, not the original English language lyrics:
Under no circumstances do I want
    To have unhappy reflexes,
You have to explain to me a little better
How to say goodbye to you.
My flint heart quickly catches fire,
Your Pyrex heart resists the fire,
I am very puzzled, I do not want
To resolve myself to say goodbye.
I know that an ex-love has no chance,
    Or so little,
But for me an explanation would be better.
Under no circumstances do I want
To expose my eyes to you,
Behind a Kleenex I would know better
How to say goodbye to you,
How to say goodbye to you.
You have blacked out our sleepless nights,
    Our gray-blue mornings,
But for me an explanation would be better.
Under no circumstances do I want
To expose my eyes to you,
Behind a Kleenex I would know better
How to say goodbye to you,
How to say goodbye to you,
How to say goodbye to you.

I tried to listen to this mix like... forever!! Thanks for posting it...but I see that it´s just as the "Commercial Mix" only with the first 60 seconds cutted out? Really dissapointed about that... :/ I thought that it will be a totally different version...
