  • Yes, we're taking a short trip to the beach in Maine. We just have a little hay to clean up before we go, so we are hauling round bales with our Belgain Draft horses, Bill and Lady. Brenda is helping drive the horses!
    Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    Hey Brenda.....So glad you talked Jim into some vacation time!! Farm work is Heavy, Hard work that Never Ends. I see why now my father became an engineer working at shipyards - .miles of asphalt and wood. Enjoy the great food in Maine and instead of smelling horse manure all day enjoy the smell of the Atlantic Ocean - HOORAY! God bless....

    I know very well the stress of nog getting cured the hay, but the last 4 summers here in Europe we suffer from very dry and warm weather. This means we have plenty of occasion to make hay, if we would have grass to dry, because it grows very little.... The classic sorrows of farmers i guess ?? Greetings from Belgium.

    Last year's hay. If its green when you wrap it that's what we call silage, good for cattle but not horses. That was a huge load but once they got it moving they just kept it moving. Brenda, you're quite handy with them!

    We had a young man work with us cutting logs just to get a taste of how things work- We also had cows to milk, so one night I was milking and he came into the barn telling me about what he did that day, I ask him what kind of trees did he cut- he was rattling some off and then I ask him if he cut any whipple trees-What- any double trees, then he was confused-HA, HA!!

    I know your channel is "Working with Horses" but their feed (hay) is equally as important and very few people understand the why the weather plays such a part in it once it is cut. In truth when to cut is as important. Maybe you could make a video showing what you have to look for and what to avoid in your hayfields. Things like when you let it get too high how woody the stems become and have less nutrition; once it is cut how it will mold if it is bales too soon; why you have to rake it over to help it dry faster; how the swaths fall down into the stubble if left too long on the ground; if it isn't baled soon enough and is dry the leaves (nutrition) will all fall off as it is baled and there is no nutrition left on the stalks and you end up with just sticks for feed with no nutrition and your animals will starve over the winter; how they will not eat moldy hay and will starve though the winter; etc. No one shows the importance of these nuances of 'putting up hay for the winter'. Maybe you could show this?

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim
      @WorkingHorsesWithJim  4 года назад +1

      Yes, that would be a good idea. We do very few round bales, we do mostly square bales. Tongue is quite long so there is little chance of hitting the driver, and they seem to fall off sideways.

    As usual, enjoyed this video start to finish. Watching the teams pull the rake or mower seems quite easy for them. But with two loaded wagons it was great to see just how strong they are. :) Curious, do you ever need to hitch the teams four up? Two in front with two in back?

    I think your wife will like a change and enjoy some me time too.
    It will recharge the batteries.
    Just a observation: but ,I noticed there’s no vertical guard between bales and driver position.
    Just saying ..wouldn’t it be a idea to set some protection there..as thoses bales are very heavy and if they did roll forward ,could increase the chances of injury should they pitch .

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim
      @WorkingHorsesWithJim  4 года назад +1

      We do very few round bales, we do mostly square bales. This wagon has a long tongue, so if they would fall off it’s very unlikely they would reach the driver.
