Wonderfully helpful, and beyond musicianship he's so articulate and straightforward verbally too (first time heard him talking) thanks a lot for sharing.
Talk about coordinated independence... Holy cow!!! Very gifted. I am not even going to attempt to follow this deconstruction. I don't have enough room in my head to accomodate all of the complexity! Ha! Ha! Ha!
That's just a regular "timbal", only one drum instead of the usual pair. As for the patter, you should give it a try. He has a DVD where he breaks it down and gives you some exercises to play that. You'll me amazed at how far you can go with consistency.
Dude, I know they're both monsters. I was just making a distinction between both of them. Horacio is the main exponent when it comes to doing clave while playing ANY style.
with all due respect to el negro, antonio is more versatile and can play better other styles, not just latin. el negro is one of the first to utilize this concepts of independence and is a monster , but antonio is more renowned as a jazz player and has done more work in every style
Gracias
You just can´t take the fact that Lang can play anything he wants... that is because of dicipline, passion and BST! He is a solo artist and for visual aspects of his performance he does these tricks in between playing grooves. He would like to "come home" and stay in a band, which is why he auditioned for Dream Theater... stretch your horizon!
Just when you think you're making some progress in your own journey, you see a video from this guy, and you realize that you should probably just dig ditches for a living.
I mean, I own both of his drum DVDs, so I have. Next time I need to play double strokes with my feet on a gig (never, ever, EVER), I'll pull them out, until then, they'll collect dust alongside my Power Ranger toys and my Big Wheel.
what is the main beat that this drummer is doing? like the name of the type of drum beat he is doing. its definetely not the tumbao bass drum style like they always see in clave music
I wish I could do that XD... On the other hand... Professional drummers who call Rumba clave "2-3" clave.... so wrong concept!!! Rumba clave can be 2-3 or 3-2, and so do the son clave.
Martin Thomsen Engström You are right, cos after that he plays rumba clave in 2-3 as he said before......I guess I missunderstood english language at first....
I don't think you could be any more off the mark. Thomas Lang learned a bunch of dumb shit so that he could sit in his practice room and play by himself, Antonio Sanchez at least gets to apply his skills in the only situation that matters, on stage or behind the glass.
No, I don't like only spanish drummers. Mike Portnoy is damn god. Lars Ulrich is just a shit. Joey is just another fast drummer. Listen Terry Bozzio, Akira Jimbo, Aquiles Priester, etc etc...If you are not a drummer please don't say the best drummer is the guy from Blink 182. Well I guess you know what you know. It's acceptable.
truthfully,,,, most of the time it's a bit overwhelming-- it's not a great sound on it's own---- it's only beautiful if surrounded by a lot of other instrumentation as in a Latin band.....
Sanchez is Mexican & El Negro is Cuban... Horacio brought the left foot clave to prominence due to his international exposure but,...other fantastic Cuban players like Jimmy Branly, Raul Pineda, Dafnis Prieto, Samuel Formell and many others..are true masters of left foot independence within their folkloristic Cuban style of music. IMHO...any one doing this after a Cuban drummer is just an imitator of an original!!! Sorry!!!!
Anyone doing and learning anything in life is in "imitator" my friend. Thats how humans have learned since the dawn of man. Many people should be happy that people are trying to expand and some form new ideas from Cuban and latin drumming. From imitation, and our own personality, is how we become our own musicians.
+AquaAnim I'm not your friend,man...& Pls don't talk down & preach to me! If you want to make a statement do it in a opinionated way!...your coming across as a philosopher!!! I really don't want to hear your rant!! I've heard it all before..Chico!!!
+truthbtold That escalated quick? I neither stated anything as concrete nor did i belittle you. As far as philosopher no, not that either, its basic human biology, and science that we learn by imitation, so yes, I can indeed state that as fact.
This guy is one of my favorite drummers. His work with PMG and Unity band is amazing.
Holy crap. Antonio Sanchez is the man!
TOUCH OF A TRUE MASTER!!!!!! ANTONIO SANCHEZ IS AWESOME!!!!!

Ha! Ha! Ha!

Fantastic
gifted!
Antonio's the baddest.
What!?!
he's a bad dude that's for sure. Also Nate you always beat me to all of these videos!
He means "bad" as in good, not bad bad.
genius!
I was trolling. You guys have admirable patience.
Great video!
David Curtis Drumming
Maravilloso
What's the timpani style drum under his ride? Also, would be great to know what other Latin Percussion products Antonio is using in the video! Thanks
It's a timbale.
Dude, I know they're both monsters. I was just making a distinction between both of them. Horacio is the main exponent when it comes to doing clave while playing ANY style.

use it any way you want .
SAUCE

Just when you think you're making some progress in your own journey, you see a video from this guy, and you realize that you should probably just dig ditches for a living.
Hahahahaha... I hear ya...
Saw your video. You're a pretty amazing drummer yourself what are you talking about.
Ok!
What lp cowbells is he using?
I mean, I own both of his drum DVDs, so I have. Next time I need to play double strokes with my feet on a gig (never, ever, EVER), I'll pull them out, until then, they'll collect dust alongside my Power Ranger toys and my Big Wheel.

Whoa 4:24
Both drummers' clave sounds clean and constant. Try again.
the 16" bass drum wins
Oh please Antonio! Give it up! Ain't no one doing it like Horacio "El Neeeeeegroooooooo" Heeeeeernaaaaaandeeeeez!
I just think they are both monsters
exactly, learn clave from tradition and culture and not from we know who, haha. thanks
most drummer's I know are practicing to much to have time to BS on the tube. All drummers have a great- ness of their on. So people stop fighting.
I want you to listen to Gavin Harrison, Marco Minnemann, and Jojo Mayer if you think those guys are the best.
Dude, are you even latino? o_O Horacio's clave sounds CLEAN and CONSTANT!!!!! Pay attention!
And I once heard Mike Portnoy play clave waaaayyyyy better than Horacio AND Sanchez
I wish I could do that XD... On the other hand...
Professional drummers who call Rumba clave "2-3" clave.... so wrong concept!!!
Rumba clave can be 2-3 or 3-2, and so do the son clave.

dang did i get bored quick

bro, really...stop lying yourself please.
truthfully,,,, most of the time it's a bit overwhelming-- it's not a great sound on it's own---- it's only beautiful if surrounded by a lot of other instrumentation as in a Latin band.....
You only like Spanish drummers?? Listen to drummers like Mike Portnoy, Lars Ulrich and Joey Jordison... they can do that in their sleep
I don't like videos like this because we don't need people to tell us how we should play the drumset or percussion in general
You don't like it because he's giving his ideas and opinions?
Thomas Lang is better
Sanchez is Mexican & El Negro is Cuban...
Horacio brought the left foot clave to

+SAHBfan I'm stating facts...It's not a rant! If you
don't like what I said..oh well!..Too bad!!
