    This is one of the best explanations of the concepts of clave rhythms I've seen. And from one of the masters as well!

    Robby Ameen and Horacio Hernandez are definitely my favorite Latin drummers. Thanks for sharing the amazing exercises!

    @Drumric305 That's where you're wrong, it's not about his skin color at all, it's more about the way he plays, his rhythm, el tumbao con el que toca. I'm Dominican by the way.

    Can anybody tell me, is the first beat on the "2" side of the clave altered to sync with the triplet in the 12/8: instead of the first beat on the "2" side being played on the "and" of 3 when the sub-division is 1/8th notes, it is shifted slightly to the second beat of the third triplet in the 12/8? Or does it even matter and should I just go out and get a real job?

    @Drumric305 You'd have to be latin or from the caribbean to understand why he's called "el negro". Doesn't necessarily have to be black to be called that way.

    @Oliver311087 oh it's that stereo type thing. Yes mosts black people are known to play with a certain feel or groov. I just didn't connect the two things.

    Just to be ok: the clave in 4/4 is not exactly the same as in 6/8...?

    • @ofdrumsandchords
      @ofdrumsandchords 6 лет назад +1

      Four years later, I hope you found answers ! No, if you play a strict 2/2 or a strict 6/8 it's not the same. But the game is to go from one to the other and then play in the cracks. Latin rythms are never played really straight, that's the tough part.

    • @exerciserelax8719
      @exerciserelax8719 5 лет назад

      The way he's playing them here, they are the same both ways. He's playing triplets over the 4/4 count so it's the same as the 12/8 rhythm. There are other ways to play claves that are different over a 4/4 (straight 8th notes) vs. 12/8 (triplet feel).

    which goes to show you that technique isn't everything!
    Feel and being informed in the kind of music you're playing can make up for any difference in technique and in fact being musical often trumps being technically 'perfect'.
    That being said, I've never heard his technique getting in the way of his playing great music.
