It's co-evolution, so when a defense is found, the cuckoo finds a new strategy. Also note that if the cuckoo baby bird is rejected from the nest, the cuckoo will attack the mother and the little birds in the nest. Why? To prevent the anti-cuckoo genes from spreading.

Every time I see cuckoo chicks I remember my childhood science teacher. She volunteers for a wildlife center an had just got a rescue cuckoo chick found on the ground after a windstorm. It was an awesome month for us to watch him grow. It was only two days old an she showed us that if the chick feels anything in the nest but itself it would push it out. She put a little ball in the nest an within minutes it rotated, stuck it's wings out an backward and used it's naturally shovel shaped back to scoop it up an out. It was really freaky. She also told us if the Mom did notice the imposter an kick it out or leave it the mom cuckoo would attack the host bird viciously to kill it's chicks and would destroy any new nests. Cuckoo's are really devoted to being lazy, lol.

But if it lives she'll just fly off and know her baby is gonna spread more parasites. Pretty fucked up. And pretty disturbing but it's the way it works. I guess it's sort of like population control to ensure the survival of its own species.
