Note that this applies both in the literal and the metaphoric; liberate your mind from the prison in which it lays. But, of course, in order to do so, you need to be aware that it has been locked up in the first place. Hence, Carter.
The very aspects you believe are preventing you from said escape (the guards and warden) are powerless once you have taken the initiative to release yourself.

Wow, this was so deep. Wasn't really a Jay Z but this video definitely has me eager to listen to this album.
