  • How to train your human to help you use the Aerokat inhaler if you have Feline Asthma. This is a DON'T GIVE UP on your cat video.
    This isn't a specific how to video on the Aerokat, there are a lot of good ones out there. This is a video on how to train your cat when most cats refuse to use the Aerokat right away.
    Many people think their cats can't use inhaled steroids because the cats refuse to use the inhaler. The key is PATIENCE and PERSISTENCE and HUMOR.
    Watch the video to see how we trained our cat Luna.

    Just thought I'd check back in with you, and thank you again. So it took TWO MONTHS of daily practice to get Enso used to the Aerokat. As you say, don't give up! Persistence and maintaining the attitude that this is no big deal are the key. I also simply refused to engage in struggle with him. I'd hold him firmly, but other than that, as soon as he showed distress with the mask, I'd take it off and give him his treat. Anyway, now he's puffing like a pro, twice a day - what a miracle! He still will often try to push the mask away with a paw after just 3 or 4 breaths, but for the most part, he's pretty comfortable with the routine. If I get him when he's in a relaxed state, it goes more smoothly. Thank you again for this video; it was by far the most helpful of all.

    • @birgittenecessary

      @@akosiryan9761 No. Asthma isn't usually curable or "get-overable." Luna is 12+ years old and she still gets puffs twice a day.

    I think any cat can be trained, outdoor or in, as long as you use patience, TIME (don't rush this process) and treats and love. It helped that I placed a small treat into the mask, so Luna associated the mask with treats. It also helped that I did her favorite petting technique (cheek rub) the whole time so she associated the process with loves. Now she is really good at getting her puffs, and thinks the whole process is just one major weird way humans show affection.

    Thank you for your video, which was done very well! Our vet just recommended purchasing the Aerokat so that we can begin doing inhalant treatments for our cat, Max, who has recently been diagnosed with a mild form of asthma. I was hesitant about making the Aerokat purchase because I felt that Max would never let us put the nose cone on his face. After watching your video, I saw how patient, consistent and persevering you were in getting Luna accustomed to the mask. It gave me the motivation and commitment I needed and today I ordered the Aerokat. We will follow your example and make baby steps to get Max accustomed to the mask and then hopefully progress to beginning the inhalant therapy. If we get frustrated I will be viewing your video to give me some encouragement. Thank you for doing this! We'll let you know how we do, once we begin...

    I do the puffs away from Luna, not when the mask is against her face. I hold my palm across the mask to keep the flap from moving while I actuate the pump, them immediately hold the mask to Luna's face. That way she doesn't have to hear the "puff" sound.

    I am really pleased to add another thank you. We have two asthmatic cats. The first one diagnosed with asthma is a sweet girl, and we had little trouble getting her to accept the inhaler treatment. But our other cat, a very headstrong boy, just wouldn't accept the treatment. Your video kept us from being discouraged and helped us stay on track. They now both accept the treatment to help control their asthma. Despite knowing it is what had to done, I am not sure we could have got here without your example. Again grateful thanks to Luna and her human caretaker. Best wishes.

    Thank you so so much for this video! I never realize don't I would have to train my cat first. I did a week of the mouthpiece and a week of both connected. Gave him like 2 days off then came back with the medicine. He does it perfect. He definetly knows it a helping him haha. I'm so relieved he's gettin for his treatments now. Thanks again good luck to everyone watching!

    This is the best video for this device that I've come across. All the others show how to use it but not how to actually train the pet to use it first which is actually the most important thing for a successful outcome. But this is actually exactly the process I used to train my little shih tzu Trixie. We use the Aerodawg. First week mask only, second week with the canister and third week I got up the nerve to give her a puff. We seem to have it down to a routine now, she will drink water after and eat a treat. It's gone more smoothly than I anticipated. I use it for her chronic bronchitis. Two puffs at night before bed to help her breathing and coughing so she and we can sleep. I'm the one who suggested it to my vet so that he could give me a script for the inhaler. He said that he doesn't even suggest it to his patients because of one cat owner who had a bad experience with it. Go figure. The prescription is crazy expensive though, $250 for a 120 puff inhaler that lasts me two months because I only give her 2 puffs a day. My vet is hooking me up with an online Canadian pharmacy though and I will be getting it for about $80. Thanks again for an excellent and entertaining video on this subject! Laurie

    Thank you so much for posting this video. Not only is it very well done, but it's the only one I have found that shows how to get a cat to the point where they will take the inhaler. All the other videos show cats calmly taking it. No one else has shown how to get the cat to that point. I have been trying for weeks to get my Tiki to take the inhaler, and only have scratches to show for it. This morning, I used your method, and actually got the mask on her face twice! I rubbed a little chicken juice on it too, which helped. Then I gave her the chicken treat immediately following. This is only Day One, but I am feeling more hope than I have in weeks. Thanks again!

      I'm so glad! Just know patience and persistence are the keys here. Also an attitude of "We're just going to do this thing" so your kitty doesn't pick up on your potential nerves or trepidation. It took the better part of a month to train Luna, but she's a champ at getting puffs now.

    THANK YOU for your very, very helpful video. I am going to have to switch to a different vet. I've never been given a clear explanation as to why my baby has been coughing MASSIVELY, which apparently isn't a cough but a fight to breathe. They gave me a prescription for an "albuterol" medication, but they never explained to me that my cat isn't exactly "coughing" but is having asthma attacks!! Heart problems have been ruled out, and x-rays show brachial inflammation, but none of the doctors have explained to me exactly what is going on. And I provided them VIDEOS of my Nicolai having massive coughing fits!
    Anyway, this is MOST helpful, and I greatly appreciate it, especially the way you've shown how to get kitty to accept potentially life-saving treatment. Your video is truly beautiful, and so is your kitty, who I hope is faring well.

      I took my cat to a new vet and he diagnosed her with asthma. Finally an answer. However she's been on a week of low dose oral prednisone. Now next week twice a day. He is recommending the Aerokat inhaler but he said Fluticasone is better use on cats rather than Albuterol. Cats build a resistance to Albuterol. He said Albuterol work for short time in the acute case but longterm Fluticasone works better. Good luck.

    Thank you for this video. I've been training my little Josie with the aerokat for about a month now. She was okay with just the mouthpiece at the beginning, but she has learned all the ways to hide her face and pull her head out of the mouthpiece. Seeing how stressed it makes her has been making me feel really defeated lately, and I've been stressed thinking about struggling with her twice a day for the rest of her life. Seeing your video and how your kitty went from noping out of the mouthpiece over and over to eventually being extremely chill about it gave me some hope that eventually this wont be as traumatic of an experience for her. Thank you for that.

    You're so welcome! That's why I wanted to post it. Getting your kitty to accept the AeroKat isn't effortless at first. But with patience and treats they start to realize it's no big deal. Especially if you approach it with that attitude. Be calm. Assured. Just practice in little bits each day. I've heard from other asthma-kitty owners that their cats will come and ask for puffs. I've caught Luna doing that occasionally too.Good luck!! :)

    It's important to shake the inhaler before administering and make sure the cat drinks afterwards for removing the bad taste, I usually give some wet food. I give two puffs of 50mg fluticasone (100mg) in the morning and the same thing in the evening. So that's 4 puffs per day. Since it contains 120 doses of 50mg, I can only last for 30 Days with one inhaler. I always have 2 in spare.And also 5mg prednisolone pills in case of emergency or when I go on vacation, because I cannot explain the inhaler procedure to my parents, the cat will not want to inhale with strangers. So my parents gives 1/2 prednisolone pill ( 2,5mg ) in the morning and 1/2 prednisolone pill in the evening. It took me two weeks to let it use the inhaler on him. The first three days were the most dificult, I had to force a litle bit by taking he's neck, the fourth day I tried without the neck thing and it worked. Also sometimes the cat feels claustrophobic when I put on the mask , then I just remove it for a second and start again from where my count stopped .

      I haven't used it yet. Have been trying very hard to keep him off inhaler. Using holistic supplements, chinese herbs, flower essences and homeopathic meds. He still has episodes, but not as bad. May still need to eventually put him on the mask. Problem is, he loves to eat plastic/rubber. I'm afraid to put any kind of treat in the mask for fear he will eat it. He already started biting the mask when I tried, and that was with NO treat. He is also extremely squirmy. I may try again soon if we don't get this totally under control. Thanks for asking.

    • @birgittenecessary
      @birgittenecessary 7 лет назад +2

      Don't put the treat in the mask then, just work on mask training with treat afterward. And start slow. Do just a few seconds of mask training before giving treats. Then a few more seconds. As you can see from the vid, I didn't do more than a count of "1... 2..." the first few times. They get real clued in to the fact that treats are coming if they put up with this. I did withhold all other normal treats during the training process tho, so she'd really get the idea that THIS mask thing was it for treat getting. Once she got on the mask, I went back to normal treats as well.
      I tried homeopathics and supplements too, but once it became evident that she needed actual meds, I had to get her on them. I still do flower essences in her water to keep "everyone" happier, but it doesn't treat her asthma. Good luck if you try it! The key is slow patience and constant persistence.

And yes the biggest thing:Act like it's no Big Deal.Same place every time.My cat will NOT let me puff her unless she is sitting on her special blanket on my lap. This was a WONDERFUL video. During a follow up appt. with my vet today she told me that if my cat's asthma ever gets worse she may need an inhaler. (currently just a steroid shot has helped so much and kept her at good) But I wanted to see how one actually gives inhaler meds to a cat and this video was so informative. I loved seeing all the different tactics you used to help her be more comfortable with the inhaler. Thank you so much for this video and also for showing the whole training process. The other couple videos I watched were showing a cat that has already been used to the apparatus for years.

    After weeks and weeks Mr Tassu would not allow the mouthpiece on his face, but watching your video I got an idea. Put a treat in the mouthpiece and let him dig for it with his face (paws not allowed). That worked ok until he was able to get the treat right out without breathing in. Okay, now I let him get a couple that way to keep him interested, then I lodge one further in the tube (It does not block the air flow) and he pushes his face into the mask trying to get it. The little flapper is going like crazy because he is breathing heavy to get the treat. Tassu is 21 pounds (He's on a diet...LOL) and if he doesn't want to do something no one is going to make him.
    I write this knowing that there are others that are so overwhelmed trying to help their cat and the cat saying "Nope, ain't happening"
    Hopefully soon Tassu will take the mask without the treat, but until then this is what I will do to insure he can breath. Hope this helps someone. God Bless!

    I was just looking up remedies for this. Fermented apple cider vinegar, and sodium ascorbate both help! Mix into water, not too strong, and dose throughout the day. Also research CDS... If you start early in the disease, it could eventually heal it.

    Thank you so much... this was very reassuring, inspiring and funny!. I was just told yesterday by our vet that we need to get our pretty kitty Tela on the AeroKat 2x/day and she is SO not about being fussed with (like most cats... but she's particularly bad, despite my best efforts), so I just started doing research on training and was feeling down about it. This gave me hope that it will all be ok, and I won't have to devote 12 hours a day to getting her to take her puffs (well, maybe at first)!

      +Kate Richard Patience is key. (And treats!!) Your kitty will get there, I'm certain. Luna has been on the Aerokat for 2 years now and has had no breakout coughing and she takes her "puffs" like a champ still. Good luck to you! :)

    • @CayugaKate
      @CayugaKate 8 лет назад

      Oh yes... patience and treats and more patience work wonders. Can't say Tela is taking it like a champ quite yet, but she at least tolerates it for the treats, and it has taken her episodes down to almost zero. Totally worth it. Thanks again!

    Thank you so much for this video!!!!!!!!!!! My cat has asthma and I was scared to give him this Aerokat thing and i watched your video twice we practiced last night with it he thankfully did not protest too much he mostly just sat there looking at us like well you're gonna pay for this one way or another lol!! But our first treatment was a success!! Thanks for sharing!!!

      I'm so glad we could help! Yay! Success! You're kitty will get more and more used to the inhaler. I still give treats every time Luna gets her puffs. And because she knows there are treats involved, and because I believe she can tell when those 12 hours are up and she's feeling it, she will often come ask for her puffs. It's very cute.

      Luna Bin Thank you Luna! She's doing so much better. She was put on a pretty intense regimen of meds through December, and after a re-check in January we've begun weaning her down on one of them. Follow-up in Feb and hopefully we will have the clear to wean down further (the meds really zonk her out, she just eats and sleeps with no playfulness). She's tolerating the AeroKat really well thanks to training her with food (thankfully she loves food lol). Thanks again for such a helpful and informative video!!

    Wondering if someone will see this comment and be able to advise: As recommended by the various feline asthma forums/you tube video comments, we got a Flixotide 125 micrograms inhaler for our kitty, along with an Aerokat. The Flixotide came from Northwest Pharmacy and has what appears to be Turkish writing on the box. I shake the metal cartridge (which is housed in an orange plastic casing). Then, I place it into the end of the Aerokat. Then, I place the mask side of the Aerokat on the cat's face, push down for one puff, and let him breathe. My questions: Has anyone else ordered this generic of Flovent from Northwest Pharmacy lately? I'm wondering if they sent a legitimate product because there seems to be no discernable smell to it... i.e., I can't tell whether the cat is getting what he needs.

    Thanks for the video. My cat Amos was willing to put the mask and canister on at the vets office for a demo, but I can't get him to use it at home yet. It's very worrisome because I really want him off the oral steroids. I guess it will be a longer process to get him using the AeroKat at home than I originally thought and your video gives me hope that he'll accept this better form of treatment eventually.

    Just got the Aerokat today and I'm sure will take at least the two weeks. I wanted to know where others purchased the inhaler. We have Flovent HSA in 110 mcg and I bought it at Costco for $219 plus tax. This is not something I can sustain given the fact that we'll have to give her two puffs per day. I saw it online from Canada for $138. Would appreciate some feedback. Thanks!

    This video made me laugh.Thank you. My cat has asthma too, and just had her first really bad attack last night. She was already breathing bad and we already knew she had asthma, so we were prepared with oral steroids. I want to get her the inhaler though, as it supposedly works better. Can you confirm that, in your opinion, the inhaler works better than the oral steroid? I'm worried sick about my girl, I just want her to be happy and healthy. Youve given me some hope with this video. Thanks again.

    • @lunabin3810
      @lunabin3810  8 лет назад +6

      +Lisa Lee I'm sorry to hear about your kitty also having asthma. :( YES. The inhaler works better than orals. First off, the oral steroids are systemic, and can mess with other systems in your kitty, especially pancreatic. Cats on oral steroids run the risk of developing diabetes. Inhaled steroids stay pretty much right where they are administered, in the lungs. Very little gets into their system. So not only is it effective because the medicine is going right where it's needed, but also because the side effects are so low. Good luck with your kitty!

    • @booksfoxxy3277
      @booksfoxxy3277 8 лет назад +4

      +Lisa Lee YES it definately works! My cat Honeybee has been happily puffing since march 2013. Unfortunately the winter months are hard on her-we still give oral pred in addition to the inhaler-when the air is dry it makes her wheeze more. We got a whirlpool Whisper air purifier HEPA filter and it really HELPS. $300 at sears but you should see how much crap it collects every month. I have allergies and it really helps.

      You don't need a lot of pressure. In fact, I use almost none. It's more about coverage for Luna. I just make sure her nose is covered. If pressure is too much she backs away.

    I started giving my cat Miu her meds through the Aerokat. The first time went pretty much all smooth, but the second time the flow vu indicator wasn't moving in the slightest. Could she be holding her breath? Because I find it pretty strange to believe she didn't breathe for about 30 seconds..

    Not sure if you will see this... I’m training my cat now. I can hold the mask and everything attached to her face for about 2-3 seconds. Should I try to hold it longer before introducing the med? Or try the med and then build the length of time after that? We have been at this for two weeks.

My question is, your kitty needed two hits. So I am assuming there were two different inhaled medications and you push one in, the push the other , then place it on the cats nose right? Just trying how to do it. I am assuming the my Chenoa could take the first hit but not sure about the second one, she might get tired of it.

    My cat's vet is shying away from using an inhaler with my kitty. He doesn't think we can get him to sit still and take to it. Right now he is taking Prednisone in pill form. we started with two per day and have slowly cut it down to find the lowest dose to keep his coughing under control. Well, he got a dose last Monday. By this Monday he was weasing and coughing and doesn't want to eat. I am calling the vet this morning to see if I need to take him in.

    • @lunabin3810
      @lunabin3810  10 лет назад +1

      PLEASE have your vet watch this video and ask them to do some more research. The inhaler method is a great alternative for several reasons, 1) once you train your kitty it's easy to do, but mostly because 2) the meds stay in the lungs and are not absorbed internally the way oral pred is. Even though cats aren't as susceptible to side-effects from pred as dogs, there can be long-term consequences. Luna was very young when diagnosed and if I kept her on oral pred she might well have a shorter life span due to complications.If your vet really wants to help your kitty, they will at least be open to a less invasive method of control.

      Luna Bin Just an update. My kitty, unfortunately, got a hold of a Motrin not long after I posted my first comment. We came so close to losing him. During that time his asthma seemed to disappear. It is back with a vengeance and because his kidneys are still a bit compromised we aren't starting the oral Prednisone again. We order him an inhaler and an Aerokat. It took a while to get here so in the meantime we took him to the vet and got a short acting steroid shot. I'm going to try your method to get him used to the treatments. I hate the thought that I may have to torture him to get his meds in him twice a day for the rest of his life. I truly hope that with training he will accept it.
