makes me melancholic, like if i was there looking down from an upper floor in a building, makes me feel dull, ....maybe more like an old memory of someplace i used to pass by when i was a kid.
    i like it tho

This is helpful. Thank you. I always find it comical when certain persons at a gallery observe the art in a noticeably self-conscious and histrionic manner, walking forward and backward while affecting an intense gaze and a quizzical expression. They appear more concerned with trying to have others view them as an "arty-intellectual-type" than they are in actually observing the art itself. If one dares to walk between them and the art, it elicits an offended glare, and often, an imperious sniff or tsk. They seem to have no idea of how silly they look, or that they are behaving in a way that is the opposite of the artist's hope, which is that we would lose ourselves into the art for a moment, instead of constantly and needily attending to our own ego.

Excellent presentation of a simple and effective methodology to know more about art. I especially agree with the points "don't read the caption next to the art before you view it" and "ask the people who are working at the museum (ask me badge!). and of course "also I like boats" LOL

What a fantastic video! I'm always trying to get my friends to go to art exhibitions with me and I ask them very similar questions that you ask here! I think you hit the nail right on the head with it. I tend to lead with "what does it remind you of" first, because I like the responses I get. I think my friends are crazy because even though we're the same general age, same general education and even similar tastes in entertainment, we tend to have very different frames of reference.
With the piece in your video, I kept focusing on the bridge and London Bridge is Falling Down kept running through my head, lol. I'm completely unfamiliar with the work and the artist (and generally the dutch realists as a whole) but I find it very quiet despite all of the people. I guess, back then, it probably would have been the hustle and bustle of the big city but seeing as I'm in Los Angeles, it's very quaint and almost nostalgic to me. Like, "remember the simple life?" no. no i don't where is my hip hop. ROFL.
Sorry I'm rambly. Thanks again for the awesome video though.

Haha thank you I'm glad you agree that those are good questions to ask! =) I hope you are able to use this method next time you are seeing an exhibition with your friends. Thanks for watching and commenting ^-^

The Art of the Art Critique, I notice people when they are critiquing art, is they sometimes attack the artist, instead of talk about the art. example " I think the artist was trying to do this or I think the artist is copying this art style. They don't look the art and see what technique they use, if they are doing a particular style, or the symbolism of placement the composition, color used. I would like to see a master class on how to critique art and how it makes the viewer feel.

Loved this. I usually just look at the art piece and try to figure out how it makes me feel and what I like about it and what not. And of course artist guessing with paintings :)
Honestly the people working in museums in Germany mostly look like they don't want to be talked to, but maybe that's a misconception....

1book1review Hmm then you should come to the ones in Canada and US! lol. Actually there are grumpy museum workers here too. So I'm sure we've all been to museums where employees are disinterested and not very nice to talk to. But that is slowly changing as museums realise that they need to keep people engaged in order to keep their attendance up and their doors open.

Describe, analyse, interpret, relate, discover... DAIRD... Die Hard?
Personally, the muted colour palette (is that a saturation thing? with the yellows and browns?) bores me but also reminds me of how photographs look after they have aged for some years. The most interesting parts of the painting for me are the clouds of smoke, the rippling of the water and the shadow of the bridge upon said water (though at first all I could really take note of was how dull I found the colours).
The actual linework of many of the buildings and figures is very simplistic though whether that is to give the appearance of distance, details being lost during the painting process or mere indifference of the artist is beyond me.
I agree that it is likely that the painting is depicting the effects of industrialisation but think of it more as a description rather than an accusation: this is the day-to-day life where the artist was painting. Perhaps the dull palette and the relative simplicity of structures (as opposed to the complexity of how the colours are painted) is to reflect how such a drastic change in urban life quickly became so mundane and ordinary. Or perhaps it is a commentary on how industrialisation was dulling the natural landscape and muting the vibrancy of urban life?
I'm not quite up to looking up what the artist's actual intent was in the piece but just trying out the process you gave here has really made me appreciate what I initially took for a dull oil colour. Thank you so much! I will have to try and practise this a few more times so I'll remember to do this more often!

I like to interact with art with my body. I take on the same posture as the people on the painting for example.
