DUUUUUUUUUUDE having watched this with all the Icebrood Saga stuff, I REALLY think we might be seeing the bloodstone soon - maybe that's what Bangar's planning to use to "tame" Jormag? (Sorry if you've already theorised this, I'm not caught up yet qq)
my first instinct is that this captured artist depicted his homeland, since he is homesick. that isn't quite as interesting but i think it's pretty plausible.
Yes the dev did downplay the painting (www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4nm1pl/guild_wars_2_tumblr_posts_stronghold_of_the/d4523ta?context=3), but I wonder why ANet even released those 3 images on facebook (facebook.com/GuildWars2/posts/10153828528619209) in the first place if it apparently wasn't something important to the story.
Really enjoy coming back to these lore updates, speculations etc. Its still some how so interesting to revisit guild wars snapshots through time, how the community reacted, and how developers handled lore as the game has gone on And honestly, these productions are great wp!
There is that one npc at Camp Resolve in the silver wastes that could have been doing some major foreshadowing with "I hope the queen left plenty of us in DR"
There was a conspiracy theory that the unseen being responsible for the SAB had given Moto a vision of the future, which he had interpreted into the game, with World 1 metaphorically following the plot of Heart of Thorns: we start in Kryta-ish open fields before entering a dense jungle which gradually grows more toxic and corrupted as we venture deeper. We then fight a giant monster which we defeat by smashing off shards of his own necklace and then throwing them back into his mouth, again metaphorically similar to the fight with the mind of Mordremoth where we smash off shards of Mordremoth's mind and then turn them back against him in the Hearts and Minds instance.I was reminded of this when I noticed a similar metaphorical similarity between the storm wizard fight at the end of SAB world 2 and the Xera fight. In both cases you're fighting a boss who keeps disappearing and reappearing on a series of platforms high in the air that come smashing down once the battle is won.Do you think there is any credence to this theory, or is it just coincidence. Is the genie of SAB possibly the disembodied mind of Lazarus?
Damn that painting got me so excited for more Shiverpeaks content (coming from a Norn). I just want to take the next fight to Jormag and make crushed ice out of him for my Hoelbrak Cocktail collection 8-)
You also may have seen the painting in the durmand basement during the Hidden Arcana chapter of the living story. I went back for sinister trinkets after already clearing sotf and it stood out like a sore thumb. You can't interact with the painting but there is a book close enough to it that it almost seems you can, the book has a hand written note stuck in it with some cryptic messages that don't seem to be solved. The book itself is about golem uprising and the note I couldn't really figure out. They probly just reused the painting but I found it kind of interesting.
Thanks for posting the video, WP. If you're lacking content for lore-based videos, we had a few narrative designers like Scott McGough and Matthew Medina answer some of the lore questions in the Lore Q&A thread on the GW2 forums where they discussed various topics ranging from where New Krytan as a language originated from (very interesting discussion for linguists, and that's been one of Medina's ideas going way back to blog posts he never had time to finish), the abilities of warriors regarding banners and if such are magical or not etc. It's worth taking a look, and they even mentioned thinking of content delivery of sorts so they can start answering pressing lore questions (that won't be spoilery for future stories) more regularly like the Dolyak Express of the past, but we'll see where that idea goes.. :)
Maybe not many frozen lakes in the S. Shiverpeaks *now*, but 250 years ago it was all pretty well frozen over. The dwarves even specifically used ice ships to skate across the surface. However, presuming the artist is not a couple centuries old, it probably is much more likely he'd be representing frozen lakes further north... though of course most of those have gone a bit haywire as well, thanks to Jormag.
Technically the player base at this point are ascended. We did that whole three vision crystals thing with the ghostly hero under the drum and priory in the living story. Not to mention the ascended armor requirement to enter the raid wings.
Yay! More epic and awesome lore that 95% of the games population can never experience first hand! Thank you arenanet for not allowing anyone else the "privilege" of playing your best content, WEH HVE TEH PRESERVE THE EXCLUVISTY OF RAIDING GUYZ
I hope they finally open that area north of drakkar lake, which is clearly blocking a zone transition, as there is a waypoint similar to the one in the south eastern corner of mt maelstrom, which basically leads to nowhere currently.
WoodenPotatoes You never know there could be like a scouting convoy to go to the northern shiverpeaks, like for the labyrinthine cliffs, and you have to talk to an npc after activating the relevant story step, which will avoid people completely skipping the story xD
I too, wonder if we really can see the Mursaat at the current stage in our storyline. I do hope that ArenaNet continues the story as fighting the Mursaat again after so many years would be really interesting and cool.
We haven't really undergone true Ascension yet and thus haven't gained the Gift of True Sight which is required to make the Unseen, well, Seen. The mock ritual we performed in Season 2 only gave us access to the Divine Fire which we used at the S2 finale. So unless we undergo Ascension, Weh no Su (not likely unless we visit Cantha, and I don't see that happening anytime soon), or find some other means to see mursaat, they'll remain invisible to us for now with their great agony attacks. What I'm curious of is if Lazarus is the last survivor or if there's a chance of there being more mursaat (just as vengeful as him or even morally grey, atoning ones to make some mursaat more sympathetic) hiding in the Mists that might play a part later.
In GW1 the hero actually underwent the Ascension in the Crystal Desert while Weh no Su was the Ascension's Canthan equivalent. The fact that these two ways exist would indicate that there could be other options in the world to reach the same goal that we haven't heard of yet...unless Anet actually opens that guarded gate in southern Ebonhawke so we get to travel to the Crystal Desert at long last to retrace the steps of GW1 heroes. :)
This was incredibly interesting. As someone who can't raid at the moment, I'm super grateful for this video. I love the idea that Tyria actually is "her". Ahhh, so good!
Regarding the Mursaat thing and why we can see them. Keep in mind that during GW1 Lazarus was CRIPPLED by the events of his downfall before, its not impossible to assume that his power is far from as great as it was back in GW1. Due to that the infusion of bloodstone may be the only thing that keeps him alive anymore, one might almost think of it as vampisim, once, he was a powerful mage with great magical energies but now due to the fact that his own power was turned against him, his power might be killing him inside out. The only way to survive by that logic would be to drain thousands of magical sources at once in order to sustain himself. Hes basically GW2's equivilent to a Vampire, but feeding on Leyline energy rather than life. Right now, Lazarus weakened state is probably still enough to kill us with ease, but knowing that using such magic would only cripple him, he probably chose to conserve himself and get away. The Depleted Bloodstone Shards are a probable hint, suggesting he probable had more when he fled. The other Mursaat may very well remain "if" there are others quite powerful if not absoleutely powerful. I do have to however, be sceptic that the idea of Lazarus being the last of his kind is a thing. Considering we have never visited their homeland, that suggests they either fled it from an unknown threat or danger and thus migrated as one to Kryta, or they may very well still be around on Janthir. I am not convinced that Lazarus "is" the last of his kind however. Though I do suspect given such an iconic characters role, Lazarus will be what Arthas was to Wrath of the Lich King, he will be the most iconic villian GW2 has ever had, possibly carrying him through season 3 into expansion 2.
What about the possibility that Jormag is feeding off of Bloodstone magic? Idk if that's plausible, but maybe dragons can feed on magic other than ley lines.
What if Lazarus did escape, and was invisible, but he was in the same room as you? What if they play that the Lazarus is your new invisible stalker, or something similar?
So.... I'm a bit confused about something; Drakkar. I'm reading/see two different things. 1. Drakkar is a champion of Jormag and 2. Drakkar is Jormag. So which is true?
What if the reference to "Kryta" being her is the same idea of "mother", in that Kryta was originally a God of some sort, and existed before the most recent set of Gods / Titans?
This really makes me want to start up GW2 again and explore the raid wings. Although I don't really have time for raiding. : / Can you just ask groups that have finished the raid to let you enter to be able to explore or is that not possible? If there is one great thing about GW2 then it is exploring and all the detail hidden everywhere.
WP I have a huge question. How / why is Lazarus the Dire still asleep? Did we (as GW1 characters) bring him back in the Eye of the North side mission, where he promised that future generations well be affected by your character's choice. If you could clear that up in the next video that would be amazing.
He was a White Mantle 'founder' and one of the three successors who took over the order after Saul D'Alessio was killed in a Charr ambush. As far as overall importance within the White Mantle is concerned he ranked up there in importance with Confessor Dorian and was responsible for maintaining the Bloodstone Ritual in the Maguuma Jungle. Maybe there will be references to him in LW:S3, we'll have to wait and see.
And of course all of the plot contained within Forsaken Thicket is gated behind content which without a level cap increase and/or higher gear tiers very few people will ever get through
Probably not relevant anymore, but I just bumped into the painting in one of the houses the human home zone. So yea, they have used it before ingame, but it's nice you didn't remember seeing it so you still did the google search heh.
Question. Is the invisibility something that Mursaat have as a passive or can they actually choose to get invisible. I think a Mursaat being in Stasis would not be able to hide himself from others. I mean how would the White Mantle see him then, all being Ascended? Doubt it. Instead of being invisible I think that destroying the Bloodstone Shards and Killing Xera created something like a Ley Rift that sucked in Lazarus.
it would be cool if they add something for you to become ascended at the start of season 3 and then you could go back and do the wing and he would be revealed still there like you say and that was how they confirmed it
It would actually be a very interesting plot twist on Arenanet's part if they eventually revealed that some members from the orders and other people we've come to know during Personal Story and Living World seasons have actually been White Mantle spies all along, especially if they had some spies rooted in deep within the Shining Blade waiting for their chance to strike at Anise and the loyalists. Imagine the drama if those former friends were torn over fighting us or not when the time to pick sides came. This would add growing tension and paranoia whenever we interacted with any human NPCs as any one of them could feasibly be a White Mantle supporter. This, added to the ongoing sylvari racism plot (I hope they won't just toss that huge plot aside despite events in HoT, especially if the scene of Canach being ambushed in DR were to happen) where the White Mantle could be rousing the humans with the truth about sylvari origins to turn on sylvari to divide Kryta's defenders, could spice up the story and help tie HoT and Season 3 together even more.
Is there still enough people on the arenanet team to put out decent sized content? I'm genuinely curious because I have no idea. I've kind of been under the impression that there aren't a whole lot of people working on gw2 anymore for some reason.
Aranvar Thats fine. I'll boycott too until anet makes it so I can be in ESL pvp with only 1 hour per week practice. I wont buy anything until I can be the prime time NA blackgate WVW commander with only 1 hour a week time investment into that. See how dumb it sounds when you apply your logic to other game types?
Speaking of EOTN & GW1; is it possible to get 50 points in HOM solo? Especially since the economy and playerbase is pretty much dead. Wondering if its worth trying for the titles; already got the skins.
Yes. You'll need all three campaigns (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall) and Eye of the North but you can get 50/50 without ever entering a party with another player; we got AI for that. You do need one PvP title for three points but the Zaishen title can be done through PvE as well and will count as a PvP title.
I sure hope a new expansion gets announced soon.. I had so much fun with this game for about a 2 years then HOT came out had even more fun with that but the game just doesn't have the same zing it used to have for me I try and go back and play often but it just bores me now. I guess I just burnt myself out. Still though, pisses me off I can't enjoy a game I had so much fun with for years : (
could this Pantheon be a flowery way to refer to the other human nations? Orr and Ascalon aside Elona and Cantha could be doing very well for themselves. perhaps a new nation the lake people belong to.
The Mursaat/Exalted thing is still around then. Wait. Wait a minute. Way back when we speculated that the Exalted were Mursaat, the opposite could also be true? Maybe there's another twist to the true nature of Mursaat and how they relate to the Forgotten. One thing's for sure in Guild Wars, there's a lot of taking souls and stuffing them into magically created bodies.
Of all the places where they could have taken that image from, they took it from box art? Seems intentional. It's such a curveball otherwise. If it was not important, it wouldn't have been interactable.
Are you sure it will be about Jormag ? Or will it be just another White Mantle base? I just dont belive that when they are so powerfull .. they are everywhere .. that they would have only one base =/. What if the painter were on that secound base .. drawing pictures and after he ran away .. his work ended up there ? What if its just another White Mantle base and maybe .. another raid in the future ? o_O
The White Mantle could have additional bases further in the Maguuma Jungle or North of Divinity's Reach. But I doubt they have bases in the Far Shiverspeaks near Drakkar Lake. Most of the Far Shiverspeaks, mountain and snow and ice alike, have been turned to water. The areas that remain probably aren't exactly habitable - the icy cold doesn't suit humans and the area is likely to be overrun by Icebrood. That and the painting couldn't have been a recent one. With the entire area around and including the once frozen Drakkar Lake having been turned into a giant in-land sea, there is no more frozen lake that the artist could paint, and no mointain behind it. And Drakkar is likely no longer sleeping.
Ofcorse if it would be only humans sure. But if the Norns are helping them .. teaching them how to survive .. and ofcorse they can have some "golems" as well. I dont think it would be that big of a problem. Sure they can build their bases somewhere else but as WoodenPotatoes said himself .. if there is the bloodshard, then the White Mantle have a good reason to build their base there dont you think ? Yeah you would have problems with Jormag and his minnions but when I seen how they avoided the Mordremoth so nicely .. stole some Pact soldied under his nose and he let them do it . I think they would be alright with Jormag's minions as well . What you know .. maybe there is also some relation between icebrood and Matthias abomination .. same way just diferent crystals?
If the White Mantle are "rasist" .. if they see Chars as beasts , Asuras as wurms from below, Silvary as plants and so on . The Norns aren't really diferent. Bigger humants wich lives in the snow ... who have diferent culture yes but are still the same. Who are excelent hunters or warriors and love to drink as hell. Do you really think the White Mantle works alone ? You even said that they are good in politics .. so there is a really good possilibity no ?
DUUUUUUUUUUDE having watched this with all the Icebrood Saga stuff, I REALLY think we might be seeing the bloodstone soon - maybe that's what Bangar's planning to use to "tame" Jormag? (Sorry if you've already theorised this, I'm not caught up yet qq)

Great Video, WP... Good to have you back! I have not yet had a chance to do any of the raid content, so this was really enjoyable. :)
Finally! I was a bit worried about you. That video was worth the long wait. :) Thank you!

HOLY CRAP!!!! FINALLY NEW VIDEO...been waiting for soooo long D:

glad you're still covering stuff I can't participate in :D
Dame nice to see you doing some good old speculations there always so well rounded and interesting love it!

I believe I covered this on a stream a month or so back, but thanks for the lovely comment!
Welcome back! I missed these!
First a Visualwood podcast - Now a WP video on his main channel. Only one answer! I must be dreaming :)
You're about to wake up and your house is burning down. Sorry dude.
visualwood podcast came back???!!!!
On the Visualwood channel there was around a 30 minute podcast they made talking about upcomiong games etc - basically a visualwood podcast
It was more of a mini pod than a real one, we were just responding to comments and things and will continue to!
Maybe not many frozen lakes in the S. Shiverpeaks *now*, but 250 years ago it was all pretty well frozen over. The dwarves even specifically used ice ships to skate across the surface. WOODENPOTATOES SAID THE F WORD !!!
What will he do next ? Join an asura gang ?!
Haha, you should check out his streams on WP2 sometime. I remember being taken aback by his sass and cursing, too. XD
I think he wants to be more "hoody" than "woody" now !
Where have you been WP! My life feels empty without your news, analysis, and wonderful british voice!
Boy do i wish the LSS3 will build upon some of this.........
Technically the player base at this point are ascended. We did that whole three vision crystals thing with the ghostly hero under the drum and priory in the living story. Not to mention the ascended armor requirement to enter the raid wings.
New video in a long time and nerdgasm. Oh man, I love you.
Rofl, that magical charr @ 22:00
It's good to hear from you again. Welcome back WP! :)
And oh my god, they dropped Weeping Angels into the raid.
the way he kept looking at it :D don't blink.
ahouyearno
Blink and you're dead!
Yay! More epic and awesome lore that 95% of the games population can never experience first hand! Thank you arenanet for not allowing anyone else the "privilege" of playing your best content, WEH HVE TEH PRESERVE THE EXCLUVISTY OF RAIDING GUYZ

Absolutely! Gw2 Drakkar waypoint is so much further south than it should be, though. Kinda weird.
WoodenPotatoes You never know there could be like a scouting convoy to go to the northern shiverpeaks, like for the labyrinthine cliffs, and you have to talk to an npc after activating the relevant story step, which will avoid people completely skipping the story xD

This was incredibly interesting. As someone who can't raid at the moment, I'm super grateful for this video. I love the idea that Tyria actually is "her". Ahhh, so good!
Well is was specifically Kryta being personified, but yeah!
Oh yeah, apparently I had a brain fart... :D
Oh mah gawd. A WP video? No way! Was *totally* expecting it. Thanks WP! :D
Awesome video! I love it! Thanks for making such a good lore video!
Thank you! Can't play the raids for myself yet, really cool story in there
This has me soo excited for more content!
Can't wait to get slaughtered by spectral agony again.
Oblivion background music? Did you add that or is that in Guild Wars 2 now? It happens around minute 12 and maybe later as well.
Regarding the Mursaat thing and why we can see them.

i waited soooo long for this vid!!! thanks WP
What!? A new video on his main channel!?
whats the name of the second?
Nice research on the painting there 👌
Aaaawww shit! The videon we've all been waiting for!
He has risen! Welcome back tato!
22:23 Does this confirm that the "mother" that we got in the final of season 4 is Tyria?
Man, I need to play Guild Wars again!
Lol you ended up being right about Lazarus. He was right there
whats the soundtrack that starts at around 36m mark wondering if i could get a clearer version of it.
It's been a while since I last did the Arah paths, but did we learn how to deal with the invisibility in the Mursaat path?
You're back!
jesus christ did wp predict icebrook saga 3 years before it happened
Ohmagawd woodsie you are alive!
What about the possibility that Jormag is feeding off of Bloodstone magic? Idk if that's plausible, but maybe dragons can feed on magic other than ley lines.
What if Lazarus did escape, and was invisible, but he was in the same room as you? What if they play that the Lazarus is your new invisible stalker, or something similar?

woop a video!!(grabs popcorn)
Non-lore related question but, what armour set and runes does the reaper in your squad run?
Is the race of the artist noted? If he is Norn, it wouldn't be that surprising.
Not necessarily. Closest you can get is wonder if 'J' is the artist and identify his race.
Wait. you're alive? :P \o/ yay video.
This really makes me want to start up GW2 again and explore the raid wings. Although I don't really have time for raiding. : / Can you just ask groups that have finished the raid to let you enter to be able to explore or is that not possible? WP I have a huge question. How / why is Lazarus the Dire still asleep? Did we (as GW1 characters) bring him back in the Eye of the North side mission, where he promised that future generations well be affected by your character's choice. If you could clear that up in the next video that would be amazing.
Which backpack is he using at 27:40?
The Ascension
thanks
You sir, are amazing. Is there a way to support you?
Totally, I have a patreon page with a lot of cool perks! www.patreon.com/WoodenPotatoes
When will the Tomb Raider LP go up?
Given how important Justicar Hablion was to the White Mantle in GW1, I am surprised that he didn't get a statue or reference within the raid wing.
He was prominent in our story, sure, but I'm not sure he was THAT important. They did throw a massive fit when we killed him, though.

And of course all of the plot contained within Forsaken Thicket is gated behind content which without a level cap increase and/or higher gear tiers very few people will ever get through
So was the painting deliberate...? Hmm.. i mean, we Are headed north with Braham's storyline..
Probably not relevant anymore, but I just bumped into the painting in one of the houses the human home zone. So yea, they have used it before ingame, but it's nice you didn't remember seeing it so you still did the google search heh.

They stepped into the mists in the lore to escape the problems of the world and the other races. They are hidden in the mists
The Potato is alive!
Wait!! What about the 10 platforms in front of the stasis chamber?????
it would be cool if they add something for you to become ascended at the start of season 3 and then you could go back and do the wing and he would be revealed still there like you say and that was how they confirmed it
Great vid WP!
Little offtopic question, what shader/postprocess injector and settings you are using in this video ? Sweetfx2.0 ?
Reshade!
I could see WP making a video theory on who, in Kryta, are loyal to the White Mantle.
This is probably pretty unlikely, but what if the exalted are (part of) the mursaat and we just gave them Glint's egg
Glory to the White Mantle! - is the new Hail Hydra.
Cut off one head, and 250 years later it's a giant organization hid in plain sight ready to apparently #MakeKrytaGreatAgain.
I am, again, so happy
326 laurels... all the T6 crafting mats you can get from those! How do you manage to not insta-spend them?! pls
Don't need a gift of fortune right now.
+WoodenPotatoes selling em for gold then?
I don't think he lacks gold or need gold for anything either haha.
What about legendary armor? I haven't seen anyoune wearing it
You can only create the precursor right now i believe..
You can't even finish the precursor yet. Not all content for the tier 2 is out yet.
You can only wear the pre-precursor right now.
Oh god FINALLY!
So White Mantle's slogan is essentially #MakeKrytaGreatAgain? 😂
hahahahahahaha nice one
Is there still enough people on the arenanet team to put out decent sized content? I'm genuinely curious because I have no idea. I've kind of been under the impression that there aren't a whole lot of people working on gw2 anymore for some reason.
Will raids kill GW2?
Yeah tons of games get killed when devs release really high quality content on a quick schedule.
But how many people actually play raids? Probably quite a high percentage of the current player base but many have quit because it's nothing new.
Nike! You are getting me wrong. I'm not saying PvP or WvW is more important than PvE. I just wish there would be more innovation in GW2.
Maybe not solely because of raids but the lack of fresh ideas. At this point it feels like raiding is the only new content though. :/
Wouldnt we need the Six gods in order to ascend though?
Nope.
the Mursaat are BACK i wonder if we will see the Seers and other primordial races
Wasn't the last Seer aside from the Prophesies one(s) dead on an Asurans table being examined?
not sure
Speaking of EOTN & GW1; is it possible to get 50 points in HOM solo? Especially since the economy and playerbase is pretty much dead. Wondering if its worth trying for the titles; already got the skins.
Yes. You'll need all three campaigns (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall) and Eye of the North but you can get 50/50 without ever entering a party with another player; we got AI for that. You do need one PvP title for three points but the Zaishen title can be done through PvE as well and will count as a PvP title.
Probably. GW1 has henchmen for solo players, no?
Yes, and heroes, but sometimes players are needed. Usually because the AI isnt.... stellar.
Another question, any tips on making some plat in GW1? With the low amount of players, I doubt selling to others is viable any more.
I rarely play GW1 anymore but when I do, I usually the starting area of UW with a spirit-spammer Ritualist. Requires a few platinum to start though.
Maybe we as the players will need to consume sous-chef seymour oxbone's bloodstone dishes to be come ascended lol
anet just confirmed that the quarterly update won't be next week by not streaming guild chat next week
gj anet.........
is that oblivion music... oh the memories...
It could indeed!
For me the labyrinth looks more a reference to arcane sanctuary from D2 than to GW lore.
Absolutely. Interested to see how this pays off!
finally.... a video
33:00 Hail Hydra?
can u make like 5min verison ? or something like tl:dr, tl:dw ??
No.
Of all the places where they could have taken that image from, they took it from box art?
Seems intentional. It's such a curveball otherwise. If it was not important, it wouldn't have been interactable.
So does the white mantle think they can fight the elder dragons alone?
That journal at roughly 20 minutes feels like a Trump supporter, boiling down to "Make Kryta Great Again."
yeah that journal had a distinctly fascist undertone. I immediately distrust people who write or talk like that.
"The char are rapists, murderers, and thieves" "I tell you, I'm gonna build a big wall, and make Ascalon pay for it"
Are you sure it will be about Jormag ?
I'm very much inclined to agree, but it does seem very odd for them to have specifically mentioned a lake and shown that shot of Drakkar like that.
These are all really interesting points! Definitely casts more doubt on the painting than I originally had. Curious.
