Great job Chris. One thing that I've always enjoyed about Billy is that he often used a 14x8 Ludwig Colisuem. I think, besides his phrasing and sticking...that snare and the way he tuned his Gretsches added to his individual and identifiable sound. Besides his ride beat.
Hi Chris. Great job in these videos of yours. May I just make you and viewers aware that, at 10:57 B. Higgins actually just plays single stroke between the snare and cymbals (in the whole clip). Not double strokes. Keep up the good work. Best wishes, and stay safe. Dan
Daniel, Yes you are correct. Right when the video fades in Higgins is playing singles between his snare and cymbal. Next the lick I was trying to highlight is when he is getting two sounds with one stroke. Both with his right and left, he hits the cymbal and continues down to hit the snare drum. I guess yes technically maybe those aren't doubles, but it is getting two sounds with one motion, so in my head it's doubles! Good catch on the single stroke first phrase and thanks for checking out the videos. Thanks for the comment and catch Daniel. Be well. Chris
@@ChrisSmithJazzDrumHang Sure. I am also referring to that second phrase. If you slow it down and try to play singles between the snare and cymbals (with mallets) you will get the same sounding phrase. Try it. That whole clip is just singles. He's playing: R(cym)LR(snare)L(cym)RL(snare), repeatedly.
Chris ...Thank you for part 2 and by the way my feathering of the bass drum is coming along nicely...thank you again. One question... will we have a Up-Tempo playing vid in our future...hmmmm :) All the best to you.
C.H. thanks for the note! Yes we will have an uptempo episode in the near future, good suggestion. Also, great to hear that the feathering is coming along nicely. It's funny how easy the technique begins to feel. After the initial learning curve it's just a matter of comfort at all tempos. If you have any questions or comments about anything you can also reach me at chrissmithjazzdrums@gmail.
My hi-hats are vintage 602 from the early 70's, left ride is a 20" Paiste Masters Medium Ride (2300 grams), right side is a 22" Paiste Prototype with 3 rivets that is a mix of Signature lathing and Masters Hammering (2850 grams). Billy played various cymbals in these clips, but most frequently also played Paiste especially the 602 series.
Thank you for all these videos! So much do dig into...
Thanks for checking them out Bryan!
Amazing work Chriss!!!!! 👑=Higgins 🙌
Thanks Pedro!

Joe you are exactly right, I never really thought about that snare sound but you are on it! Great point.
Awesome stuff!! Thanks for sharing
