1K vs 2K Auto Paint

- In this video I show the difference between 1k auto paint and 2k auto paint. 1k paints have been around for a long time and is an older method of spray painting. It is safe to spray at home or garage and you can also get a great finish.
In this video I go into detail the differences and how to get that 1k acrylic looking awesome.
All products available from www.vgautopaint...
I'm impressed that you talk about the safety hazards of 2k paint. I wasn't initially aware of this until I did some research before improving my classic car. I'm disappointed that most other 2k paint demonstrations on you tube do not mention this very important subject! I'm happy to use 1k paint with protective clothing, nitrile gloves and a filtered face mask at home. However I have found that some 1k epoxy primers still contain he dreaded iso stuff. Keep making this very informative and useful videos.
I painted my car with 1k a year ago in my garage. I'd never painted before, just learned from RUclips. A year later it still looks awesome and its easy to fix mistakes and damage with thee acrylic. 2k hardens on your lungs and your neighbours lungs if you don't have a proper booth. It's not worth the risk.
1k acrylic over spray doesn't stick to everything either. Just need more coats
What 1k spray can product you use?
@@beptex2858 I used a spray gun. Concept paints from memory. About 4 coats of colour and six coats of clear. It still looks great.
Which one is more durable though?
@@jerryp2433 2k
Dulon primer filler is a great primer filler for 1k application
Also, you don’t spray etch primer over bog, that’s not what it’s for.
In 1k, bog is applied direct to metal that’s been keyed with 36 grit, sometimes even 24 grit. Bog WILL fall out if you don’t do this. After bog has been applied, then you etch prime the surrounding exposed bare metal and then hit that etch with 240 on an interface pad. After that, you then spray something like ppg/dulon high build primer filler. Once dry, mist on a guide coat then sand usually with 400 wet or 320 dry followed by etch primer and primer surfacer on any rub through. wet sand those areas carefully again and then top coat is ready to go on.
Top coat can be cut with 1200 if orange peel is noticeable, or skip that step and move to 1500 and then 2000 grit followed by a final buff with farécla g3 compound on an orange foam pad buffing machine
if you use a hardener on acrylic enamel, it makes is shine like glass, and isnt affected by solvents
If your gonna use a hardener why even use acrylic. Negates the safety diy aspect.
Fantastic video, is it any harder to spray 2pack than spraying Acrylic
Can you please do a review on the concept super gloss clear in aerosol thanks
Are you sure both will hardened the same overtime?
But if the acrylic isn’t solvent proof, logic dictates the the 2K is more durable. Because each of those applications of primer spray putty and more primer and the sanding is all hours. Time is money. It me its kind of a toss up. But if i were doing a car i would use the 2K.
Is there a big enough cost benefit over all or negligible?
2k is about twice the cost. But i had so many hassles with acrylic with application (poor quality and solvent breakthrough) and then being destroyed by petrol, that I bit the bullet and used 2k. The difference of outcome is amazing. For something that you require a high gloss and solvent resistence just 2k it.
Love how comprehensive this video is! Lots of good information in the video. I feel like I'm in university. This is the definition of a quality video.
Should rename the video to- how to make mirrors

Great vid, thanks. Do you have any experience with iso-free 2k? It's meant to be not so harmful, but I am curious whether it gives equally good finish. Sanding is OK on a flat panel, but for example can't imagine doing wheels like this, not to mention durability difference.
Thanks for revisiting this comparison. Watched your first one years ago and finally about to start on a resto at home in 1k. The insight and guidance is invaluable!
Keep up the great work 👍
No lie I have been 2atching DIY paint vids and I was set to order some 2k stuff until I read how much more harmful it is to the body. I would've accidentally shortened my families life spans. New sub. Thank you
Love your vids matey. No BS, No hype... just great info.
Keep em coming, please!
Cheers from Perth
If at home 1k all the way, give it plenty of coats cut it back polish and its like a mirror, you can take your time without the worry about dying in 10 years from the 2k hardners
He is so right 2k is super dangerous, ,it's basically a 2 part resin and air born if in hailed would not be good not to mention the killer fumes it produces when the hardener is mixed , I wish you could hire a spray booth in Sydney
OMG you're so right! Why am I struggling to rent a paint booth in Sydney?!
It would be great if you did a video with a list with all the things you need to do a home project, for first triers as myself.
Amazing mirror finish polish, great to see 1K vs 2K, and the extra work for the results with 1K. Cheers for the vid.
I add upol 2323 hardener and a we bit of penetrol to my acrylic. Isocyanate Hader er for acrylic or 2k no difference. I just shot rustoleum 4:3:1 paint, thinner(60%naptha40%spirits) and hardener and a splash of penetrol. It looks and cures like glass. It is solvent resistant and if I like to smash on some clear I can scuff it with gray scotch pads and flow coat it with a clear any time. Shine like a chrome-dome chicken bone.
Any vid about yours? sounds awesome
I'd be very interested to know more about this too. Ratios used?
So just to check this is ok... Bare metal, rattle can etch, fix problems with filler, spray etch primer, guide coat, sand, touch up with rattle etch, spray water based metallic base, spray 1k lawyer/clear, sand, buff X3...?
Can you please let me know the durability between 1k vs 2k? Eg. how resistance it is to petrol, scratch and impact. Thanks
I’m blown away by the results of the 1k! And on black too, that’s what really proves the results. I’m wondering about the durability and solvent resistance though??
Overfill your gas tank a couple of times to find out. The paint will spiderweb/crack. 2k if you plan on keeping your vehicle.
@@victoreous626 that’s what I suspected!
@@victoreous626 not if you put hardener in it. he didnt use it at all. a waste of time.
Another great video, seen the bonnet in the store last weekend and it looked great under the lights. Keep up with the videos, would like to see more content. The more that are focused on the DIY the better, even look at re doing some of the older videos with an updated look and new products.
I called around A LOT of different places to get custom paint mixed up, called VG Auto Paint and had the best customer experience EVER! He not only was able to get the colour that i wanted (rose gold), but went the extra step in getting the tone right to the exact colour i wanted. Couldn't be happier with the service provided.
Hi. I really liked this video. many thanks. I do lots of motorcycle restorations so the resistance to petrol is one of the top requirements. I am switching to 2k type paints and have used "solid" colour ones successfully. I now want to use "Base" colour" and "Clear-coat" . QUESTION: at 2:18 you mix the base coat with "REDUCER"...Is this the same as the HARDENER the primer and clear coats require...OR is it just a THINNER and the base coat is simply a 1K type?....Much appreciate it if you can explain please. many thanks...
Hi, been following your excellent work from Qatar. I will be painting my Truck at home using a spray gun and have 1k Primer with 1K basecoat, however, 1 K clear coat here is only available in spray cans. Can i apply a 2k clear on the 1k primer/basecoat combination?
You can bake 1K Paint. If you don’t bake it you use a hardner. Dries quicker and higher gloss. Don’t think anyone that does not bake it does not use the hardner. If you use the hardner you don’t have to buff it. It is better if you buff it. Harder is usually not that cheap but being that it sets up quicker with the hardner you get less debris in the paint. 1K paint is not that friendly to metallics. 1K paint reflects light differently than basecoat/Clear coat system
You're certainly correct in that 1k Acrylic cures with a much better finish baking it. In the right situation it will even re-flow to address minor paint inconsistencies.
Testament to that fact are the Holdens up to and including the VS Commodore, all painted with 1K Acrylic - never needed buffing, outside of repair work, as they were all cooked!
Not suggesting that such materials were better than the enamel that then followed for all later versions (or the 2K that was used for all post paint-shop repair work in the factory).
Many ways to achieve a shiny finish in paint...
Your might be confusing single stage with 1k. 1k means one part no hardener. Single stage means not basecoat clearcoat. Yes single stage can be unfriendly to metallics
Huh, was wondering this! Usually I use 1K base coat, 1K primer, and 2K clear when I do things with a spray can. All the benefits of 2K protection without the hassle of having to get a full spray-booth setup.
Me too... I’ve never had any reaction issues
So its ok to use 2k clear coat over 1k base
How long do you wait for your base to dry before you put the 2k clear on?
@@KrayzieRyan 24 hours
Great video I been stuck on a backyard project trying to decide on 1k vs 2k since I know 2k give a better of the gun result. But after what you said that most likely you will need to polish the 2k aswell then maybe safety could be better and use 1k. So for me I’ll use 1k since I don’t have Booth at home only have a good mask but my neighbour I’m sure doesn’t. So maybe 1k is more considerate for us backyard project guys
fwiw a clay bar will get the compound residue off the car if you happen to let it dry.
Great video mate, I stopped using 1k years ago , still use the primer though
Loving these videos, any recommendations on how to set up a reliable but cost effective spray booth (with and without a garage)
With a garage? Plastic on the walls. Wet the plastic so lint and particles stick better to it
@@ttiization home built by jeff has a video on how he setup his home spray booth in his garage. Although, his is fairly permanent I think.
Recently seen inflatable spray booths, haven't spent the money or tested them personally. I usually just use the one at work.
Some paint shops rent their booths.
No paint job is worth getting sick. Great advice to use acrylic at home. Spraying 2K paint in a suburban home environment is irresponsible. It's not only you it might be affecting.
Hope this don't sound stupid but after you have clear coated with 1k should you no longer use a wax and grease remover to clean before you sand. I noticed you only used water ?
I have read about iso-free 2k paints/clear. I'm assuming that means it's safer to spray at home? Would love to see how the final result of that sprayed looks against the 1k and legit 2K results. Great vid!
WHEELS OF MISFORTUNE hey mate I’ve asked our paint manufacturer about iso free 2k. It’s still just as harmful.
@@customspraymods oh wow! I didn't expect that. I wonder what the point of even making it then is. Sounds like they're probably just replacing one poisonous chemical with another. Thanks for the reply!
WHEELS OF MISFORTUNE they make it because some people are really allergic to iso. So much so they go into sneezing fits when it’s near them.
@@customspraymods well there you go. I'll consider myself edumacated! I would imagine that most people though would see the "iso free" tag and automatically think it was safer. I know I did when I purchased all-u-need primer. 😉
@@wheelsofmisfortune3162 more like custom spray mods don't sell iso free 2k. So they are trying to sell this
He is a good painter - But - The differences in "Actual" painting is the same - You can paint either at home, as a matter of fact, Base cost would be better to do at home - you can sand either the Base-color or Clear within minutes if you gat a run or dirt - Single stage you can't - You have to wait "days or weeks"... Anybody can use Base coat - And the "Spray Filler" is BS, you fix that "Right" when you fix the spot - You don't wait until you're painting... It sounds like he's telling you if you want a good job go to a Body Shop - Do you have to be told to "Not Breath Paint" ?????
Thank you very much. I was looking for a good explanation on 1k and 2k. I got a bonus education with buffering pads. I wish I would’ve known more about acrylic, since I am painting my car at home
Hi , you stated the 2k has the basecoat and a hardener , so when you mixed you black basecoat you only added a reducer ? Isn't reducer just a thinner ? So does that make your black coat 1k ? Cheers
2k basecoat. Pretty much means it’s suitable for 2k clear. But it is a 1k.
I too was confused by this at 2:04 Dave said 2k base coat system then after Dave was prepping the 1k acrylic primer
at 4:59 he said base coat setup the same as 2k. Was it a 2k base coat or a 1k base coat? Then at 6:10 he said both panels 1k basecoat.
Appreciate the effort these pros make in producing great content but sometimes I'm left more confused haha.
@@midnite3769 Hey. 2k means 2 parts. 2k basecoat can be confusing as it is 1 part but called 2k basecoat because it's suitable for 2k clear coat. Hope this helps.
Idk......that logo looks awfully similar to a certain Gunman on youtube
Awesome video. Excellent content, delivered with extreme clarity and detailed explanations. You really help us learn by covering all areas thoroughly. Peace!
Hey please answer , does 1k paint goes off in contact with gasoline or petrol ,, once it completely dry?
1k went out back in the 80s and is a waste of time it’s 2024 and protec epoxy primers car master hs finishing primers and Ppg or protec base colours and clears is the best way to go
mad skills you got there. I am researching 1k. I am going to paint my car at home in the garage. I painted 2k before and stunk up the entire neighborhood with it.
in the 2k system - the base don’t have harder like a 2k single stage?
So Confusing
Is these a base in the 2k system which is mixed with hardner
2k all the way.
Yep, it is easy as long as you have the correct safety measures, good respirator, goggles, ventilation etc.
@@pcorf yep. 2k contains isocyanates which is toxic af and can cause some serious respiratory health issues, including inducing asthma. I don't have a booth so I use 1K often, but have used 2K in the past. 2K is a lot more durable and you can sand/buff it much more aggressively. They both have upsides and downsides imo.
Ahh the old orange peel debate. Orange peel is preferred in many concours car judging events. To the extent that you can have points deducted for NOT having orange peel.
Good video, most car snobs say "only use 2k cuz it's sooo great," but it seems like even they don't fully understand the benefits and drawbacks.
Ive always had issues where acrylic paint after been polished to a mirror as you have only to develope orange peel after about a month or so.
Ive even left parts to dry for months then polish to a mirrior only to suffer the same fate. I give up on that stuff.
It's crap. If it was so good why don't car manufacturers use it to bring down emissions in the factory 😑
So the 2K primer can take the place of the body filler, etch primer and the puddy?
So if let's say you had deep chips in the paint or paint damage that goes down to the primer. For example I had some deeps chips gauges in the rear hatch of my 2015 Toyota Rav 4. would I sand those areas to the primer or to the metal then use the 2 K primer filler ,let it dry and use just 600 grit to smooth out those areas then finally paint and clear coat?
Last question . Can I use a 2K primer then use 1 k paint and 2K clear coat?
Thank you
Question: If I use the 1k for spraying a motorcycle tank (at home project) is the 1k more likely to cause damage to the finish from gasoline down the line?
yes petrol will soften it
For that I'd use 2k paint and clear coat
Very helpful to those of us with little to no experience in painting. I do not have a booth and always wanted to do a paint job. I am into airbrushing right now and want to clear over it too.
I know you guys say 2k needs a booth but is it an absolute necessity need to spray my truck but its too big to get in our booth and I'm not going for show
Thanks. I'm currently reading a book on prep and finish. I'm stuck somewhere, i had to prospect to comprehend that passage. Your video answered my prayers 🙏.
اللهم انصر إخواننا المسلمين في فلسطين و سوريا و كل العالم
Hey, you did a great job of making 1k acrylic look bad, nice job 👍😉
why do they say the basecoat is 2k? I thought all basecoats aren't mixed with hardener?
Why use etch primer over filler? I thought that was for going over metal.
Bro i like all your video but please tell me which is your original channel Costomspraymods or gun man
The amount of people that have no idea how the chemistry works that want to throw out incorrect info in the comments is insane.
I don't have a spray booth. but i want to do 2k paint in my garage. still okay?
Thanks i definetly don't need to learn this but now i do lol
Outstanding video. I would question one comment though, about the 2 pack being potentially harmful over a long period of time. I would not use 2 pack even once with self contained breathing apparatus
A brilliant video that answers many questions. Thanks for making and sharing it.
Brilliant vid, really informative, thank you so much for posting.
Great video ! Another good vid would be about the compatibility of primers with 2k or when to use etch primer (or when could you possibly use it)
hello sir can you share with me the spray gun size and pressure on each step of painting 2k primer, 2k paint and 2k clearcoat.
Point of interest you can use 2k primer with acrylic paint and you can buy primer filler for acrylic as well, the base colour is interchangeable
Don't forget the up keep on acrylic, you'll be forever polishing shine back as it fades real quick
Exactly.and it just isnt as deep a look as 2k
what You could do is You could alsoshow us how scratch restistant both paints are.
Acrylic for me.. as my zx was painted in acrylic in 1982.. I will be out to VG soon for paint.
2 k all the way :) Way too much work with acrylic.
Basically 1K acrylic sucks and needs a lot more work
You should put the product for buffing so we can buy it
I don’t even know where you can buy 1k primer by the quart anymore

Great video to watch for beginners in spraying lots of information thanks keep going man
I spent $500 on paint and a compressor and painted a Swift, it had orange peel all over. Got the shits and sold it. This explained it much better.
Hey mate, I have had a customer ask if I can cut and polish a car painted in 2k. Can I? Please help haha
Sure can. Use the same methods.
2K means 2.components: on is the filler/paint/clear etc and the other one is the hardener....but honestly I have not seen any hardener added to the 2K basecoat which is confusing..🙄
Great video. I am a newbie when it comes to painting cars. There seem to so many types of paints and ways to put it on that it is confusing to me. Your videos make it a little easier to figure out. Thanks for sharing.
Should let viewers know that when buffing acrylic lacquer it burns easy. Don't stay in one spot and move fast. Also acrylic lacquer is a lot more work having to cut and buff. 2k, no cutting and buffing unless paint has blemishes.
1k seems to have a lot more work - whats dearer ???
did he put 2k clear over 1k base ?
Acrylic is so much work. The sand, cut and buff takes forever and you have to make sure you have a really good layer of paint there to sand out all the orange peel without hitting primer. I found the 2K comes of the gun so shiny you need only give it a quick buff on the wheel and thats it.
2k can stand up to Australia's harsh environments better than acrylic lacqure. For the home repairer, acrylic lacquer is the go. Fast drying, any blemishes can be sanded and recoated within 15 mins and flocoated. 2k is great if you have a spray booth and as stated, can stand up to Australian conditions. Long gone is the old nitrocellulose lacquer aka (duco).
he talks about severe orange peal on acrylic clear coat. you can avoid it by going slower with spraying going to fast and it is going to mist. The trick is going a bit slower how ever that is tricky to do. Practice with dollar store clear coat paint it will help you find the speed you need for the glass finish you want. 2K if done wrong is very hard to polish by hand and a machine is expensive for the small piece you need to polish. and instead of 2 coats do 3 or 4 so if u do need to polish you got some meat to polish away before you hit paint again.
I moved to Tasmania Australia several years ago, had to stop using acrylic, because it's only warm enough here for about a month per year.
Now let's see you do some old school baked enamel :)
Was that similar to a two pack?
I remember back in the 70’s using a synthetic air drying enamel, with a 2K converter/activator, then stoving it off in the oven, the paint could also be flatted and buffed, which wasn’t possible in air dry form.
I would have said the paint finish was superior to two pack, (at that time)
Old school - as in the same as used to paint up to the very last commodore made :-D
@@CalinDee no like the enamel used 50yrs ago
Interesting knowledge 👍👏this is what inspired me on my channel 🤩🤩🤩
That looks amazing
Now I know which I will use on my build. I have experience with acrylics from finishing guitars. I have space for small parts in my booth and a greenhouse the car will fit in lol.
Fantastic site , just a question very close to a bike tank finish have a 2k primer the base coat states it's 1 and 2k have a 2k clear coat . On the edge of finishing the primer prep couple of spots but ok .I am working in 36c btw these are rattle can fyi . I am in clean room thx
I watched another video comparing 1k and 2k. One tip was 2k is resistant to solvents. That’s important for automotive use. The buffing of the clear on 1k gave great results. I may try on the one k application that I’ve already applied. I had one spray can of 2k and it worked great. Maybe buffing later will improve the finish. You’ve got an amazing set up but I’m not able to do that so DIY is where I’m at.
Dude, why have a channel if you're too busy to make videos about painting and design and body care? Huh? Why? Why? Tell me now.
Was the etch primer sprayed over bare metal? I am of the understanding it must be bare metal and not painted surfaces, hence the etching. Your thought please?
I did spray painting as an apprentice, and we had to etch prime metal around filler repairs I also am confused and the paint system was glasurit.
Etch primer must be used for bare metal surfaces. But it can also go over body filler and paint.
ohh so if im budget minded could i use 1k for primer and base and then 2k only for clear. and then get a nice ish finish? nice video btw
Super kanał super filmiki 👋👍🏆🏆🏆polecam pozdrawiam
Im flabbergasted lol only three days wait for acrylic before wet sanding with only 1200 grit, then compounding for a great finish. I'm no expert but I have to wait at least a week, start with 1200 then go 1500 then 2000 and even 2500, then compound and I still get scratches on the finish. You make it look easy! Great job!
Its all marketing. So there is a better paint system, great. The old paint system is better than the one before it. I think calling it 2k is dumb as all F@#DF. It confuses it with monitor resolution, maybe that was the point.
