It was my very first tornado experience, i was 8 at the time and just knew that i enjoyed the shape of the clouds and sound of the siren. Tornadoes always bring some sort of happiness to me. How can something so beautiful be so destructive?
This was, hands down, the best tornado chasing video I've seen, and that includes the Discovery Channel. You gentlemen have guts, and you have skill. Thank you for sharing.
I was in a house right under this thing when it hit. What saved Kearney from massive damage was that it touched down, but not a hard touch down. It almost like skipped over the city. Part of our roof got ripped off, but if it had hit full on it would have leveled everything.
As you watch and re-watch this video... take note of how you encourage your driver to "Keep going, keep going" then say... "Oh this is getting dangerous, it's getting dangerous!... Keep going keep going" Common sense was trying to tell you to stop! You drove right into a Tornado! Put yourself and your crew at RISK! I'm sure we'll hear your name one day on CNN.
Can't believe I'm the first comment, anyway At the end I can't believe that the wind just took that dumpster and moved it like it was nothing. It was fortunate for Kearney that this tornado wasn't bigger than it actually was or else we'd be looking at EF4 or EF5 damage, but it looked to me though that the majority of the city got hit by the RFD and straight line winds and not necessarily the tornado, but that's what I got from the video, I'm not sure parts of the city took a direct hit.
"We have a tornado on the ground! We have a tornado on the ground! We have a tornado on the ground!" ☝️Quick question... Is there a tornado on the ground? I mean, that's what I need to know but nobody will tell me.🤷🏼♀️ 😉
That tornado jumped over my parents neighborhood, and took out the fairgrounds. Then it moved across Nebraska and took the siding off my house in Omaha, and uprooted an oak tree across the street, then went North through an Iowa Boy Scout Camp killing innocent children. It was a horrible storm.
I remember this storm very clearly. it destroyed a lot of building. tire giant trees straight out of the ground.. national guard was stationed all over town for days..
The tornado looked to be behind them, if you look at the direction the debris is flying. Either it is the RFD or it is moving their way, behind them and sucking the debris into the tornado. If it was on the left side as they indicated, then the trees and debris would be pulled in that direction.
June 2008 was a very bad severe weather season where I live. I remember June 11th we had an EF2 tornado miss my house but destroy one of my best friend's houses. Then a few weeks later we had a funnel cloud that didn't touch down but still brought some hail and winds. A summer I will never forget that is sure.
Assuming you live in Nebraska or Kansas, I remember that very well. Over the span of probably two or three weeks probably 2/3rds of those days we got severe weather. I lived in Lincoln at the time - originally from Minden - and I remember stepping outside on break at work and just instantly feeling how muggy it was that afternoon. A little bit later I got a text alert - which I still had set for Minden - and the only part of the alert it displayed was "Particularly Dangerous Situation." Got off work a couple of hours later and in time to turn on the news just as this was happening. And if I remember right that same cell held together and produced strong winds, hail, and probably a few more tornadoes all the way past York before it weakened very much. And it was night after night of similar storms all over the area (that was the same summer the Boy Scout camp in western Iowa got hit as well). We haven't had a month let alone a summer that stormy since. Two final things: one, you gotta love the people of Kearney not having a GD clue as to what's going on and still driving around like idiots. Two, my favorite part of this video was at 1:28 when he says "yeah, we're gonna get rear-flanked pretty qui...(wind slams them)ck!" He couldn't have timed that any better.
Josh Mckinnley From the sound of what happened and how poorly equipped everyone was in having a heads up especially given the terrain, it was a miracle that only 4 people lost their lives their lives there (that's not to lessen the deaths of the four that did though).
Josh Mckinnley June 2007 was the worst for us, since i live further in the Midwest it is extremely rare for us to get a high risk for severe weather. During that we had a massive EF3 just east of me, but the time the storm got here by me it died out.
I was 3 when that happened. We were at preschool and then rushed to my grandma and grandpas house . We sat in thier basement for 2-3 hours and I went up and stood out side with my grandpa it was Awesome
Sirens going off, and some people still driving and walking around. Are Tornados so common place in Nebraska that they don't take them serious. Stupid question I know but, I watched the one guy walking in the fore ground in the parking lot. He didn't seem to be overly concerned. I would have been going in the opposite direction.
+Terry Ashton they are pretty common in Nebraska, i live in scottsbluff nebraska which is more western and we don't get as many as central nebraska does, but yup in nebraska we look at tornados the same way people look at fireworks
Early on this dude saunters through the parking lot without a GLANCE at the incredible monster storm looming over him, his head doesn't even turn towards it. What a SHMUCK!
My brother was in the hospital with my mom and the tornado was very strong and hit the city thats why my mom was staying here with my brother before i was born
I remember it because my dad had to go to work I was crying and he was still working at dominoes meaning he had to drive that was of course before my parents divorce
I was wondering why the branches were being blown away from the tornado? Normally the trees would be sucked into the tornado and would move in the opposite direction, once the tornado passed. It looks like the tornado went through the town already.
OMG! I remember this. I lived in a MOBILE HOME about 500 yards from the drive in screen that I lost my virginity at on mothers day in '07 during Spiderman 3 :P (What a day, woke up at 3 am after Ghost Rider n' my car wouldn't start). When it fell over in the storm, I cried. One of the last ones here in Nebraska! The sound was on the radio n' where I was, you could climb on the roof of the trailer n' see the screen! R.I.P. screen thingy!!! X'(
I live in kearney nebaska and the tornando was in our front yard and torn down our house but the built a new one for us our family thought we were going to die but we didnt
Tornado. On the ground. We've got a tornado on the ground. On the ground? Yep, on the ground. A tornado. Right there on the ground. We've got a tornado on the ground.
I was in the local tornado shelter hugging my coin sized turtle. Been trying to find a video of this for sometime.... thank you for posting this.
We got debris on the ground x20
It was my very first tornado experience, i was 8 at the time and just knew that i enjoyed the shape of the clouds and sound of the siren.

It’s weird rewatching this now. I remember when town use to look like this. It has changed so much now
I'm pretty sure they got a Tornado on the ground... just in case you didn't hear me the first four times~~~LOL Good Grief ~~~
Peter Babic There's a Tornado on the ground....lol
Also the tornado is right on us if you didn't hear me the first 5 times
10 times in the first two minutes!!
Peter Babic in case you didn't know, there's a tornado on the ground lol
Uh huh. Apparently the tornado was right on em.
It was a dangerous situation…..
I was at my Dads office across the street from DQ. I had no idea it was this close. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
"I'm not gonna get any closer than this!" [continues to drive closer] wtf
Land of Idiots
Can't believe I'm the first comment, anyway

Hello from a spotter from Jackson county , MO. Wishing you guys a good and most of all safe storm season this year.
Thank you! :D
Can you please repeat all of that sir? I missed it the first 50 times l lol l
"We have a tornado on the ground! We have a tornado on the ground! We have a tornado on the ground!"
☝️Quick question... Is there a tornado on the ground? I mean, that's what I need to know but nobody will tell me.🤷🏼♀️
😉
@@IAmSuzyQ , thanks! Now I cannot stop laughing!
l wonder if the tornado was right on them...
They would be pretty much dead
Ha, no, KingDIY KingDIY, many chasers take direct hits from smaller tornadoes and live to tell about it, lol.
Kenneth Darden they were in the circulation, the tornado never did hit them
3:44 "This is getting dangerous!", and then all the lights went out! 😱 (That's the moment I would have shat my pants; y'all are BIGLY brave!)
This was the most terrifying experience for me
This also took out our damn drive in movie threathe
That tornado jumped over my parents neighborhood, and took out the fairgrounds. Then it moved across Nebraska and took the siding off my house in Omaha, and uprooted an oak tree across the street, then went North through an Iowa Boy Scout Camp killing innocent children. It was a horrible storm.
Daisy Drifter I was there a week before storm at Viero Center for show!
Daisy Drifter I remember that storm....traveling from Wyoming to see my brother in Omaha...it was scary
😢😢😢
I remember that tornado I was sitting on my porch drinking apple juice it was fun
(I was 5 )
Cool
lol
5:19 That really was a Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV). Very stange how it went the opposite direction.
Yeah lmao that was cool
If you watch season 2 of the discovery channel series called storm chasers, the TIV tries to intercept this tornado.
Yes.
It was going the opposite way because if you watch the Episode Josh told them to head back to the interstate.
I like how they are just looking at the tornado and it's coming right at them
Put themselves into an extremely dangerous situation. Never should have put themselves in that situation.
I remember this storm very clearly. it destroyed a lot of building. tire giant trees straight out of the ground.. national guard was stationed all over town for days..
They passed where I live. I was 9 when this happened. Luckily nothing happened to our house.
The tornado looked to be behind them, if you look at the direction the debris is flying. Either it is the RFD or it is moving their way, behind them and sucking the debris into the tornado. If it was on the left side as they indicated, then the trees and debris would be pulled in that direction.
Great footage, thank you. Learning situation right there
So neat to see the TIV in this footage! *waves at the TIV*
"You are approaching a twisting storm.Kiss your ass goodbye!"
+spunbearing65 Wahahahaha!

I went to that Boy Scout Camp (called Little Sioux) and they have rebuilt but you can still see all the damage still left behind.
Josh Mckinnley From the sound of what happened and how poorly equipped everyone was in having a heads up especially given the terrain, it was a miracle that only 4 people lost their lives their lives there (that's not to lessen the deaths of the four that did though).

" You're approaching a twisting storm, please exercise caution"
have not heard that in a hot min! XD
The first sight of seeing the TIV or the Dominator, you get the hell outta there!
Nebraska seems to have some of the meanest tornadoes around from what I've seen on RUclips.
At least u survived n didn't tossed for miles ...
Just being snarky :) But to wonder what all the other motorists are doing driving toward it, when you are also driving toward it seems... odd.
True Nebraskan men "it's getting a little dangerous" when they are in extreme danger ⚡ Getttrrrrdone
am nebraskan, can confirm, we are the most redneck state
I can't tell..is there a tornado on the ground??
Oh I remember this I was so scared and I live really close to there
My friend lives in Kearney. He works in Cabela's at the call center in back of the store.
Great video footage n big F5 twister ...
I was 3 when that happened. We were at preschool and then rushed to my grandma and grandpas house . We sat in thier basement for 2-3 hours and I went up and stood out side with my grandpa it was Awesome
We were on the other side of town though
Yes there is a tornado on the ground because if you look at the dust being kicked up in the beginning you can see the bottom of the tornado.
Yea they are usually not a surprise in tornado my dad stays in the bedroom sometimes they are pretty common here in Nebraska but so is snow in April.
Terry Ashton Hey I Live In Nerbraska And Yea Your Right We Don't :)

My brother was in the hospital with my mom and the tornado was very strong and hit the city thats why my mom was staying here with my brother before i was born
if i had a nickel for every time he said "THE TORNADO IS RIGHT ON US!!!!!" i would be a rich man xD
Great video guys be a little more carefull next time dont get trapped by the tornado like that!
I remember that day. Good times!
I remember it because my dad had to go to work I was crying and he was still working at dominoes meaning he had to drive that was of course before my parents divorce
i remember this when it was the last episode of storm chasers 2008!
if i hear
tornado on the ground
one more time
i’m gonna throw up
Its incredible and unbelievable the force of mother nature can give you...
The calmness when tornadoes r down ....
@gutenjel Tornadoes are pretty cool to watch. It's when they hit populated areas that shit gets messed up.
Did anyone go through the GI tornados? ... I will never forget that day.
It is weird to see a lot of the buildings and new ones the video has
That building they parked next to? Severe tornado damage. Had to be replaced. Lol
As you see an empty bucket lazily rolling around the corner.
What building was it? I live nearby but can’t identify it.
I think you have a tornado on the ground.
I was wondering why the branches were being blown away from the tornado? Normally the trees would be sucked into the tornado and would move in the opposite direction, once the tornado passed. It looks like the tornado went through the town already.
1:34 "You're approaching a twisting storm. Please, exercise caution."
Funny!
This allí happened when i was being born
really cool video
To think I was at Goodwill during this storm with my co workers cracking jokes in the bathroom not aware of this storm.... lol
Scary thing is I moved here that summer in July
Isn't it called a funnel cloud until it touches the ground and then its called a tornado?
dude thats an episode from like the first or second season of stormchasers i saw tht one thts pretty coo
OMG! I remember this. I lived in a MOBILE HOME about 500 yards from the drive in screen that I lost my virginity at on mothers day in '07 during Spiderman 3 :P (What a day, woke up at 3 am after Ghost Rider n' my car wouldn't start). Think about how many times you've driven up here on a bright, sunshiny day! You guys went through HELL!!
it looks like the tiv but im not sure cus if u remember they also have TIV 2
What's that thing called that's on the ground? 6 times in 30 seconds
Was it on the ground??
Yea it destroyed quite a few houses
You DO realize my comment was made more than 9 months ago? I've had time to look over ALL of this page.
5:18 when the TIV is headed in the OPPOSITE direction it's time to either: 1. Retreat! And STOP going forward! or 2. LOOK BEHIND YOU!!
And also the first time it is mention "there's a tornado", those of us that watch this stuff, GET IT THE FIRST TIME IT'S MENTIONED
Gotta love the TIV
Great catch guys and you have balls the size of bowling balls. BTW what software do you guys use for your chases?
This happened 10 years ago. Wow!
When they're debating whether a tornado is on the ground early in the video, you can see several power flashes. It's definitely on the ground.
I was 5 months old when this happened
yes it is if you would look at the info box it says it
That's quite a stormy sky.
RIP Stormchasers (TV Show)
I remember this i live like 4 hours away and this storm past use fist but there where no tornados
Are those 2001s i'm hearing? (the kind of tornado siren)
The town has 2001-130's and an xT22
yes that was the TIV
I live in kearney nebaska and the tornando was in our front yard and torn down our house but the built a new one for us our family thought we were going to die but we didnt
Nice, in Norht Germany have we very very little tunderstrom cells :(
4:08 damn i thought that traffic light would of snapped off, the way it was bouncing up and down.
where's the tiv and dow??? haha. Storm Chasers is a series on the Disvovery Channel. They were there during that.
How on earth can people stay outside in such situation ? Where do you find shelters ?
Why are you continuing to drive into it?
I know, right?!
mda037 come on that's basically what a storm chaser dose get as close to it as you can without ding
So did they ever determine if the tornado was on the ground ?
WOW!! way to go on making it seem way worse then it actually was..
Wow 4 months before i was born and 3 years before i moved here
Dang man great vid! more destruction =more cooler but more danger is what i hate.
Outstanding, exercising your hands.
Why does this sound like my band director Mr. Scharff
Was this anywhere close to 5th ave?
That's rlly..rlly.. dangerous. BUT TOTALLY AWESOME!!! Do storm chasers seriously use Bosch wiper blades?
Keep driving into the tornado and see if you can get hit DAH
I just found out what Tornado is made of a lot of clouds comes together.
And it's rain wrapped and they can't see it but they r still driving into it I hope they be ok
Tornado. On the ground. We've got a tornado on the ground. On the ground? Yep, on the ground. A tornado. Right there on the ground. We've got a tornado on the ground.
You're approaching a twisting storm. Please excersise caution.
i believe that was an M1 Abrams tank!! Yes, sure looks like it was TIV-1.
