I think the most obvious example of how much Ragnar loved Athelstan were his reactions. When Athelstan states he can no longer acknowledge Ragnar’s gods, he’s only slightly offput, whereas people like Floki would just outright kill his ass. When Athelstan says he should leave tho, Ragnar nearly loses it, he just loves him so much he doesn’t care about their differences.
Absolutely. And he TOLD him he loved him. As much as Ragnar loved Lagertha, he didn't actually tell her onscreen (the closest we've got was that "Is that your way of saying you love me?" Moment in season 1). And he very much NEVER told Aslaug he loved her... In fact, it's not too far fetched, if we assume he never did. But, to Athelstan, he told him to his face. Even Athelstan himself was a bit stunned about it, it's clear this isn't something Ragnar usually does! Ragnar is way more likely to *show* his love rather than say it. And he *has* also shown it to him. He's very physical and often touches and grabs people to show affection. He does it with Athelstan a lot, from the begining, and with his children specially, mostly when they were younger. With Athelstan in specific, he was more physical than with Floki or Rollo! Since Day One, he'd often go very near him, playfully push him a little, wrap an arm around him, grab his clothes or hold his hand. And after he was crucified, only Ragnar and Judith ever touched Athelstan's hands, both of them with a lot of care. Hell, Ragnar never told Rollo than he loved him, but we know he did, and only told Floki the very last time they saw eachother, since it was so important for Floki to know that. With Athelstan, he also only said it once, but he'd so often be so afraid to lose him! In season 2 Ragnar seemed so betrayed when Athelstan chose to stay in England to protect Ragnar's interests rather than going back with him (And even after being told Athelstan was dead, Ragnar kept having dreams about him, and felt he was still alive somehow). When he met him again, much like when he asked Lagertha not to leave him, he told Athelstan no come back with him (holding onto his cloak). Only after season 3, when it was clear Athelstan would still chose Ragnar and his people instead of King Ecbert and England, Ragnar became more confortable with being separated from him, and left Athelstan (and Lagertha) with King Ecbert without fear of him "stealing" neither of them away. Ecbert was very similar to Ragnar in that aspect too, both of them were very attracted to Lagertha's strength and Athelstan's complexity, and the two of them chose to go back with Ragnar. Ecbert was also quite physical with Athelstan. He also went very near him, grab him and wraped an arm around his shoulder, specially when Ragnar was there. And he also talked about how devastated and heartbroken he felt after Athelstan left him, and we all know Ragnar can sympathize with that. Even if he had pretty much no one around to talk about it with.
Even though their relationship started with Ragnar kidnapping him, I always loved how Ragnar accepted his faith and didn’t force him to believe something else. This made me smile throughout
My point was that the people who see their relationship as romantic and those who see it as platonic can easily agree that it was love. I am by no means a homophobe. I am a giant homo. No kidding.
@ashoftomorrow I see it differently! 1. Ragnar may check how faithful to his religion Athelstan was by offering him to sleep with them! So he wanted to know if he can trust him! And it was also pretty common viking thing ask the person to sleep together! 2. Ragnar was baptized to trick them and get into Paris and conquer it!!! I don't get how people don't see this!
@@SVETOGOR1 It wasn't about testing him. He was truly asking him, twice. As for the baptism, you could argue that it was only to trick the people, but keep in mind two things: 1. Ragnar was still on the verge of death. Even after the attack, Bjorn worried he may still die because of his wounds. Ragnar must have known his own condition. 2. Ragnar was outside in the rain, talking to Athelstan, wishing he was there. When he saw a vision of him and then it disappeared, Ragnar had a break down and begged him: "Don't abandon me." Later the next day, he asked to be baptized in order to see Athelstan again. Even if it was also a trap, there is *still* evidence that he also truly wanted to be baptized in order to have the chance to see Athelstan, if he did in fact die from his wounds. Vikings did sleep with men too, but only if they were on top, as it was considered unmanly otherwise. It's not like Ragnar was the 1st Viking on the show asking to sleep with the same sex. In a deleted scene, Lagertha, Aslaug and Ragnar sleep together, and Floki, Torstein and Helga sleep together. It is true that there are some relationships that are just platonic and that's it. But there are some where the possibility is very much open to be more.

F. Format They’re not trying to force anything. Just simply trying to state that different people have different point of views. You can believe Ragnar and Athelstan had a friendship all you want but there are many others who believe differently. I really don’t think a heterosexual man would be interested in sharing his wife with another man and he asked Athelstan another time in a deleted scene from 3x01. He mourned Athelstan like an actual lover and was miserable when he died, and he had a love for him that he never had for Aslaug or even Lagertha (he never said he loved her on screen). He even loved and trusted him more than his own kids. Platonic or romantic, it doesn’t matter. What matters is they had a great bond like no other and were definitely soulmates:)
nehema supp Sorry, but I was thinking the same. I'm not a crazy fujoshi, but this scene was cute for some kind of romance. And I know they were more like brothers with a very good relationship, and that's all.
Ragnar saw in Athelstan what he wanted to be. It was never about whose gods you worshipped. To be the truest of ones self and to live fearless is what Ragnar loved about athelstan.
Ragnar loves him so dearly because he is the truest of friends. The way a big tough man might love a puppy, it is an innocent love not diluted or soured by anything else. This can be misconstrued as romantic love.
One of the most beautiful scenes. Ragnar found a friend and a brother in Athelstan. He loved him.with all his heart. The same kind of love that he had for Floki, only this one was less potent. Only in this show have I seen what lifelong friendship and love looks like between grown men, and it not being sexual at any percent. I love it
There's a huge topic on how Ragnar and athelstan weren't just close friends but actually shared an intimate relationship. But Vikings decided not to add that bit as it may start a huge commotion and misunderstanding amongst the viewers. What I said may not be 100% true but there is a huge probability.

*For people saying they are gay, that is to vastly ignore what the word "love" meant in devoulty Christian cultures, like the one Aethelstan is from.* When Ragnar says he loves Aethelstan, he is not just declaring fellowship but also respect for Aethelstan's Christian beliefs. Jesus, his 12 disciples, and the other Apostles said they loved one another all the time. It was a brotherly love. In modern times, "love" has a much more sexual connotation. It has more to do with lust and being "in love." For old Christian cultures, love was to care about someone deeply.
there are many kinds of Love brotherly Love, Sisterly Love, Love for a dog, or a house, or even your own Life... and ofcourse sexual Love, which seems to sell the most.. out.. there.
I think Ragnar knew this was the one relationship he never screwed up. Marrying Aslaug because she promised him kids meant that Lagertha and Bjorn never trusted him again. And then his unhappy marriage meant that Ubbe and the others could never like him without feeling torn. And Rollo never EVER seemed to like him, even though they were brothers! Athelstan was the one person through the series who ended up loving him and never wavering in that, and he knew it.
@@BoONeo They had all the telltale signs of a love story. You don't need overt sexual images for it to be one (even though he literally invited Athelstan to share his bed twice, but I digress), and thinking so is limiting your perspective. Many love story's have no sexual stuff in it, it's all about the two falling in love with the other for who they are. Honestly if Athelstan had been a girl, no one would deny the obvious tones of a love story. Ragnar and Athelstan have a love that transcends such basic terms as friendship or romance for that matter. They were soulmates. Whether you want to imagine that as purely platonic or not, is up for interpretation, nobody sits here telling you that your purely platonic perspective is wrong, so don't tell others theirs is wrong.
And they could have! I mean, back then, kissing on the lips was a totally normal and casual thing to do, even with friends and family! Just a show of affection like any other... But they also should have kissed in the way we use today, honestly.
When I first watched this I thought they might kiss or mess around but it not be a big plot of the story. They had a strong brotherly love. Ragnar admired and respected ath and his purity /character.
You know, actual Norsemen slept with "friends" all the time. It made no difference really. And they were just as much friends as any! They also had no concept of gay or straight, it was more of what one felt like in the moment, and affection and sex was just a normal, natural thing to them, and could be felt about or towards anyone. They had ritual orgies, and even when in a relationship, they shared the bed with guests and friends as a courtesy, or just because. Hell, a man could even be married and have children, and still live with another man in a different house! As long as he provided for his family and looked after his children, nobody cared. Your only obligation was to have children, and after that you could pretty much do whatever you wanted, except raping a free woman, of course, or murdering one of your own. The Gods changed gender and crosseddressed all the time, had sex with whoever and had all sorts of children. Norsemen also had great respect for "crossdressing men", intersex people or hermaphrodite people, as well as infertile men, or older women, since they believed they were capable of magic and had a deeper connection to the Gods. So, in context of culture and history... might as well have been kinda gay.

Let's make this clear, it's not sexual romance, it's the type of christian Love, Agape love, unconditional Love like God. It's the purest form of Love. Ragnar here is like God, God which is jealous and God that loves Athelstan, he doesn't want athlestan to leave, he wants to protect him instead. If you studied philosophy or theology at university, You would know the historical setting this show is placed at. Even the concept of being born again back then wasn't fully understood. If they kissed sexually, this scene would lose it's meaning., because it's not supposed to be sexual love, nor is it bromance love, it's unconditional love.

Ecbert, Ragnar were two of them, if they felt feelings of brotherhood as you suggest instead of sexual as i think, well is a matter of POV. the lack of sexual meeting sometimes means less than nothing.
Brotherly love*
Ragnar has a swaggy old hoodie from 21st century lmao 0:24
I’m jealous of Aethelstan.
Just kiss him
hú park stfu
hú park OK wait that's so gross. Its like a brotherly love
nehema supp Sorry, but I was thinking the same. I'm not a crazy fujoshi, but this scene was cute for some kind of romance.
And I know they were more like brothers with a very good relationship, and that's all.
+Janice Thanks that makes sense
That's gross.
Damn... hearing "I LOVE U" from someone like ragnar, and just like that, it hits u hard.
Also because he is absolutely the only one who never or would never turn their back on him.
0:18 the way Ragnar looks behind him lmfao!!!
"You're the only one i can trust, you must stay"
Defiantly not romantic just pure friendship.
Soulmates ❤️
One of the most beautiful scenes. Ragnar found a friend and a brother in Athelstan. He loved him.with all his heart. The same kind of love that he had for Floki, only this one was less potent. Only in this show have I seen what lifelong friendship and love looks like between grown men, and it not being sexual at any percent. I love it
Athelstan & Ragnar
BEST BROTHERS THAT HAVE MADE A MARK IN MY LIFE
0:54 a bookmark for me
There's a huge topic on how Ragnar and athelstan weren't just close friends but actually shared an intimate relationship. But Vikings decided not to add that bit as it may start a huge commotion and misunderstanding amongst the viewers. What I said may not be 100% true but there is a huge probability.
ya you probably get all intimate with all your friends perv, no one can friends anymore because you liberals want to imagine what you all love to imagine
@@sirnunez7923 the world is a shit place because of you illiterate fools who can't even understand a sentence of such simple words. First Learn to READ before learning how to WRITE, that would stop you looking like a fool.
11 dislikes from Floki
*For people saying they are gay, that is to vastly ignore what the word "love" meant in devoulty Christian cultures, like the one Aethelstan is from.*
When Ragnar says he loves Aethelstan, he is not just declaring fellowship but also respect for Aethelstan's Christian beliefs. Jesus, his 12 disciples, and the other Apostles said they loved one another all the time. It was a brotherly love. In modern times, "love" has a much more sexual connotation. It has more to do with lust and being "in love." For old Christian cultures, love was to care about someone deeply.
there are many kinds of Love brotherly Love, Sisterly Love, Love for a dog, or a house, or even your own Life... and ofcourse sexual Love, which seems to sell the most.. out.. there.
Athelstan: The lord has come to me.
Ragnar, after Odin just visited his wife: Ah lads, not again.
god, it makes me so damn sad and depressed i cant watch this show for the first time again.
I LOVE YOU ...
wish I have Athelstan experience
I think Ragnar knew this was the one relationship he never screwed up.
Marrying Aslaug because she promised him kids meant that Lagertha and Bjorn never trusted him again. And then his unhappy marriage meant that Ubbe and the others could never like him without feeling torn. And Rollo never EVER seemed to like him, even though they were brothers!
Athelstan was the one person through the series who ended up loving him and never wavering in that, and he knew it.
Love it's love it's not an sexual question here ... pure love ❤😻
They are sooooooo gayy for each other they are so in love to each other, fight me.
OTP FOR LIFE!YEAH!😆💜
Lamia Günyüz - wrong. It wasn’t sexual.
@@socalcraigster But they were in love anyway in all the ways that mattered. sexual isn't the strongest form after all.
@@roseofthegarden_ They were not IN LOVE, they loved each other as friends/brothers and had a strong bond, love and in love are 2 different things
They should have totally kissed
And they could have!
I mean, back then, kissing on the lips was a totally normal and casual thing to do, even with friends and family!
Just a show of affection like any other... But they also should have kissed in the way we use today, honestly.
just a couple of straight guys huggin' in out.
Women w/ friends : ''oh my god i love your hair''
Men w/ friends :
When I first watched this I thought they might kiss or mess around but it not be a big plot of the story. They had a strong brotherly love. Ragnar admired and respected ath and his purity /character.
Like a baby ahahaha you gotta love ragnar
The Yang of Yin
I am not gonna lie I kind of lmao the first time I saw this scene 😂 but later in the season I understood how serious they valued Athelstan.
Ragnar bro. When you say'' I love you'' to a man. you better follow that sentence by: ''no homo''.
Insecure much?
@@charlottesmoviephile8924 It's a Joke...
He didn't say "no homo" because it was "all the homo"
Love is selfish and possesive.
Althelstan was Ragnars true brother
the only people I say "I love you" to are my family not another man.
Ragnar❤️
Like a baby?
Sure, Ragny. Like a baby.
Your only won I can trust you 😞😒💞💞
this relationship is not gay whatsoever. this is a big bromance. you can love your best friend without being gay
Ragnar looks like a huge feline in this scene 🐈
So true 💯
I love the video and ragnar and athelstan love but theres so many people here in comments denying it crazyly like calm down bro we know that you feel ofended by homosexulity but they love each other, romantic or not
I love this scene, but i think that Travis dont caught well. He dont leave a cristian, he leave a very important friend, a pilar. O sea, me encanta esta escena pero creo que Travis no la entendió bien. Lo estaba abandonando una amigo, no un cristiano, un pilar, con lo que eso significa
And Athelstan say, " i dont mather what hapent whit me, you worry me. Mother fucker, thats is love.
Perdonen mi mal ingles, im drunk & nostalgic
Where is your god now!!!!
It’s the brother he always wanted, sorry rollo
I ship them so bad
Trust
Just leaving idea wasn't acceptable for him and worst he was murdered
❤️
He is ragnar lover in lgbt
:-D
A lot of people here are down bad ngl
Just i hope that they will found one the others again. Jesus Christ and Odin allow them see each other again. Sorry for my english
Wait they are gay!

Is athelstan real?
Not this Athelstan.
There was a king AEthelstan
This is not a sexual love, it’s a brotherly love that is shared thur the Love of God and faithfulness
This was stupid his love for him made no sense
Athelstan saved Ragnar in battle thats when Ragnar loved him and trusted him
Go to a doctor and fix your brain or get a new brain. Your choice
Then you should watch the show again, more closely.
