Clearing grass and debris - It doesn't matter if you are a professional yard care company or someone who loves taking care of their lawn. When you mow, edge, and trim, you are bound to get grass clippings and debris on the sidewalk and/or patio. We have all tried to do the mower trick where you push or drive your mower along your sidewalk to try to clear the grass clippings. Yeah, that may work a little bit but it tends to push all the grass clipping to the edge of the grass and then get all brown when it dries out. Defiantly not ideal! The proper way to handle debris and grass clippings is getting a blower designed for the work. There are countless models out there on the market today but the real question is do you want another battery platform designated for OPE (Outdoor Power Equipment) that you will only use a handful of months a year? We didn't think so! Makita Tools has decided to forgo the special 36v battery and go with 2 of their world famous 18 volt LXT batteries.
Makita 18v x2 Blower | XBU02z
With a Makita-built BL Brushless motor, the 18v X2 Cordless blower has an impressive 120 MPH velocity while delivering 473 CFM of air volume. This allows you the speed and airflow to blow both heavy debris but also large volumes of light debris as well.
Nozzle Length
Makita gives you two nozzles that have a stud and locking positions to match you length to your height, arm length, etc. It is a really great way to make the unit more ergonomic and fit your individual needs.
Handle and speed controls
Keeping with ergonomics, the handle is comfortable with rubber over-mold on both the top and the bottom. The trigger has a satisfying resistance to it but is easy enough to not wear out your finger. For long blower applications, a trigger lock is designed to allow the trigger to be locked in the pulled position so the user doesn't need to pull the trigger. They can just focus on clearing the debris in front of them.
With an on board 6-stage velocity/volume selection dial and in combination with the variable speed trigger, the user can dial in the correct velocity/volume for the task at hand.
18v x2 Batteries
As we touched a bit on earlier, the XBU02z blower from Makita has been designed to utilized their two world famous 18v batteries instead of a dedicated large voltage battery pack that is specifically meant to be used with OPE.
Other manufacturers are producing specific OPE batteries that are larger and provide the required electrical specs to operate their OPE products. This is all fine and dandy but you only get to use the product a handful of months a year and then they get put into the shed or garage till spring comes around.
We are a huge fan of Makita's decision. Having two 18v batteries as your power source is a huge advantage. You can go from building your deck with Makita's power tools to slapping them in your OPE equipment like the string trimmer, blower, or countless other tools. No more dead time with a larger battery platform, your 18v batteries are always useful.
With two batteries instead of one, Makita has included a battery fuel gauge/indicator that checks both batteries at the same time. Saving you time and eliminating the potential confusion. Smart thinking!
Air In-Take
In the past we have tested many OPE blowers. Some units have major draw backs where the air in-take is for the blower. It will get caught on your pants, jacket, or other articles of clothing. During our testing of Makita's XBU02z, we didn't find that issue. It is located on the lower back of the unit which helps minimize that issue. We did encounter it a few times but deemed it a non issues compared to how many time other units would fail in that department.
Conclusion
We all have debris and grass clippings to clear from our garages, driveways, sidewalks, patios, or large work areas. As we started this blog, if you are a professional yard care crew, someone who enjoys taking care of their yard, or just the average home or business owner, you will enjoy a dedicated OPE blower.
Having the battery advantage is priceless. Utilizing the two 18volt batteries in Makita's OPE or go into the garage, workshop, or job-site and slap it in your drill, impact driver, saw, or any of the other 18volt tools that Makita has to offer. And let us tell you, it is a lot of tools!
I picked up one of these from a shop in the uk for a cheap price, it’s an awesome tool, I can’t believe how much power it has, I’ve only needed to use mine on speed 2 & 3 for what I need done. It’s good knowing if I need more power I have it on tap ready to go.
I'm getting to that age where convenience is getting to be preferred , especially when it comes to tool use. I've been slowly witching to cordless tools so this would be right up my alley and with Makita you just can't go wrong.
I like the 36v dual battery platform. It gets frustrating when companies keep coming out with new platforms all the time.
Just ordered one of these. Thanks for the review!! 👌
Do you have to use both batteries at the same time with this tool? Will it work with just one battery?
My blower just stop even theogh it is fully charged. When i push the power button it clicks but no air is blown out. It is very new.
Down side? You did not talk about run time on high? I have hear from others that have them and they say run time is real bad?
John Bailey because this blower was given to him for free 9 mins on setting 6 ..9 mins useless ..but this guy is yapping about garbage for 5 mins ...go with the milwaukee
I have the Milwaukee and this and I'll use this every single day of the week over the Milwaukee. The Milwaukee is less powerful and easy louder with a much higher pitch whine undetectable on the Makita. As for run time, if you're in a platform you have extra batteries. No one had just two batteries in a cordless platform. I can get done on low speeds with the Makita what took much higher speeds from the inferior Milwaukee. Not to mention, the two 5.0s from makita charge within the same time as the 9.0 Milwaukee on a rapid charger where the Makita charge that fast on a regular charger. Milwaukee is still behind.
this, dewalt 20v blower, or milwaukee gen 2 m18 fuel blower ?
Gen 2 Milwaukee
@@WorkshopAddict Thanks
Ask your son, what is the run time on high please. That will keep him busy so he won't mess your landscape.
15 min
I like that you can use 2 18 volt batteries instead of a new platform. #WORKSHOPADDICT
There are actually TWO 18v Makita battery platforms and they are not interchangeable. There is the old platform and there is the new STAR platform. The batteries are not interchangeable, at least not without unauthorized modification.
All of my old Makita tools (2005-2015) that ran on the LXT batteries when they first came out accept the Star batteries ones without issue. The only thing you can't do is shove 2 Amp batteries on tools that require more power such as the circular saw, chain saw, 1/2" impact gun, etc. But the old batteries function fine.
Ego 56 volt 575 cfm 145 mph enough said!
yeah, pure junk that shit......go away stupid.......
It's not all about raw power. The Makita has much better finesse control. The trigger on the Makita is variable speed, not so on the EGO. The Makita switch is instantaneous with no time lag, the EGO has a 1/2 second lag. The Makita has much better control to push debris into a tight pile for easy cleanup. The EGO has poor finesse control and blows things all over the place.
