As a boy in the 1940's, I made this trip on the old D & SL coal-fired Moffat road train from Denver as far as Craig many, many times. It seems strange but happy to see it celebrated now as a tourist attraction. In those days we could board at rural places by flagging the train down and hopping on, then stopping at our ranch in Grand County.
As always, another first-rate video from Simply Railway. How nice that you were able to take your chère maman with you. One quibble: I've seen several RUclips videos on the Rocky Mountaineer, and everyone tends to skip over the hotel part. How are the rooms? What amenities does the hotel offer? How many hours did you spend there? It would be nice to know those details.
From my experience in the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer, you chose and pay extra if you want to upgrade your hotel accommodation & there are a few levels. Mine was a while ago but & I can't remember if I took upgrade or not, but it was acceptable and clean etc.
Hey there! So the hotel is actually very nice. The rooms are large with everything you can expect from a decent hotel in North America. Food and drinks are NOT included at the hotel which I think is a shame in my opinion. I did not film that much at the hotel since I wanted to enjoy the time with my mom. But in Glenwood Springs, we went straight to the hot springs and got some food downtown. 🙂 I hope it helps Thibault
Did you check out the hot springs in Glenwood? My Uncle lived there in the 1970's, we spent a few days there once. So many things to see, Hanging Lake, and Marble are two must see areas!
That's the closest I'll ever get to riding that train, so thank you for sharing. To me, the most obvious advantage of an excursion like this (aside from the luxury) is that you don't miss scenery because of overnight travel.
Watching this brought back a rush of amazing memories. My dad recently passed away and I took my mom on this exact trip back in early October. We had an incredible time and I'm glad you had a wonderful time with your mom too. Thank you for the great documenting!
I worked in Glenwood Springs for many years, and loved to watch the trains come through from my office window. The Hot Springs are marvelous, I'm glad you were able to stay over at the wonderful hotel
I have done the ski train to Winter Park. Fun! Did you have time for the Hot Springs in Glenwood Springs? It's a stair step set of pools - hottest at the top, coolest at the bottom.
Denver Regional Transit District owns Union Station and does not allow the Rocky Mountaineer access to it. Hence the shuttle to the actual location. 9:50, the genset tool car at the end of the train. For $1500 there should be the Auto Train type option to bring motor vehicles from Denver to Moab.
Thanks for that. It looks like a great train, but frankly it's more than I'm willing to spend. I still need to ride the Cal Zephyr, which would be more reasonable. But the country needs a luxury train option, and this one will do just fine.
Excellent video trip! Fantastic to watch this because I will be enjoying the SilverLeaf Plus experience in September 2024 although west to east. Can't wait.
Wow, it's expensive, true, but what an amazing time! There's a new Virtual Railfan live camera at Big 10 Curve in Arvada, CO. You should have waved at us! :)
14:26 this is actually the Rocky Mountaineer's second route in the United States. They had another route called the Coastal Passage that started in Seattle, Washington and went into Canada to Vancouver, BC. That route was discontinued the year before 2020.
@@SimplyRailway not a problem. There is a video of a ride abroad it that someone on here posted. However, I will say that this is the Rocky Mountaineer's first all-American route, so you are right there! It looks awesome! So happy that your mom and you got to experience it! I hope you both had a great time! By the way, I have to say that I love your channel! I love these lil glances of railways that you give across the world! Stay safe on your travels!
Hello Simply Railway, I am very much into watching this kind of videos and uploads as I love travelling by train, thank you so much for sharing so much info.❤❤😊😊
I congratulate you for bringing your mother aboard. I'm certain that this will be a lasting memory. But, you dont need to travel solo. In certain you would have fans who would join you. I would.......
Thanks I see this train on VR in Canada and the US and wanted it reviewed. Wow. This service is not AMTRAK. Im impressed. I would not mind doing it again. Also are you game for doing this trip in the Out back in Australia. They also have a 4 day luxurious train ride too. Cheers!
You should note exactly where to get off 10 miles of Moab because based on the video, I cant find on google maps so I can know where, I like to be curious where. By the way, amazing video for sure
Thibault, so sweet of you to bring your mom along. For the second day you have to be back at the train by 6:45 AM? I think I will pass. Looking at the menus, the granola is served with a croissant? Interesting. Thank you Thibault for the beautiful video.
Did they make you exit the vestibules in tunnels? Did your Mom have fun? I also think that car behind the engines is a diesel-generator “power car”. Some American freight locomotives never had a separate generator for passenger train operation. The “power car” created all of the electrical power to the train for light, heat and air conditioning. It will also generate smoke and that diesel smell.
They make you exit the vestibule only for the Moffat tunnel. For the rest they just let you hang out in the exit. The tunnel district get quite smoky lol
Brilliant video (as always!!). Would you mind sharing information (make/model) about the camera you use for the 'out of the window' shots? Many thanks.
What a beautiful video of a beautiful journey! So this is only for tourists? People don't use this to get anywhere? I suppose the first, because the price is really high. It seems cool, but flying to the USA and adding another 1.500 dollars for this trip is a bit too much. :(
Great video. I was surprised at how smoky it was. It can take away from the scenic aspect of the journey. Not to mention the pollution when you are outside.
Vast majority is single track. As noted on other videos, even the California Zephyr gets priority because it's a scheduled intercity train. This is purely a tourist train.
??? The Rocky Mountaineer and Amtrak's California Zephyr follow the same route through Colorado from Denver, so I don't understand why you say the Zephyr is more scenic. Perhaps you meant the latter portion of the Zephyr's journey, when it goes through the Sierra mountains in California...??
A very disappointing, ridiculously expensive experience ! There are two truly remarkable things about American and Canadian trains, it is the extreme lack of any reasonable speed, bordering the pathetic, and the enormous amount of money you have to spend for a decent accommodation in them. Just decent. There is an advantage though: you can easily stay in shape by jogging alongside the train when it moves (barely) and get back on it a couple miles farther, this at almost any step of the way! One more point: restrict your travel to the very Rocky part. The rest of the landscape is so dull and boring that some people riding the desperately long section between Toronto and Calgary for example, are still sleeping to this day! Save your money for a train pass in Switzerland. For the Amtrak cost, you will get both the air ticket, the rail pass and real trains...
I really fail to understand how it's possible to justify such a price. Food looks good, but it's nowhere near being luxury, nor is the seating, and you're not even sleeping in the train. I really wonder about the margins on this route... Being a Canadian company, I have no doubt it is way overpriced.
Look at the number of staff for a start. Or, do you recommend their wages be dropped. If everything runs smooth, food is good, hotel acceptable, why quibble. It's a ONCE in a lifetime extravagance, if you can afford it.

Your mother is so young and attractive. You're a good son for bringing her on this great journey.

Thanks simplyrailway for your awesome, detailed vidéos!! I Know where to go for my next traintrip!
Love that you got a chance to ride the Rocky mountaineer. It was on my bucket list before but just got moved up a bit more Thank you!
Truly a wonderful life-time adventure ride! Thank you so very much, Thibault, for this!

Come and do some of the fabulous railtours on offer in the UK! Some are steam-hauled, but most diesel.

What a delightful video! Thank you for sharing this beautiful journey. I’d spend most of my time in the outdoor vestibules too!
Thank you :-)
What a great trip and great experience, especially this trip you bring your mother.
Great video !!
Did the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer years ago in Gold Leaf from Vancouver to Calgary. Now that was pure luxury..
I can't wait to review it ...
I have done the ski train to Winter Park. Fun! Did you have time for the Hot Springs in Glenwood Springs? It's a stair step set of pools - hottest at the top, coolest at the bottom.
Of course! Straight after the train, to the hot springs :-)

Looks incredible! The California Zephyr has been on my wish list for a long time but this is something I would definitely consider as well!
Keep in mind, the majority of this is on the route of the Zephyr.
Both trains are amazing. One is more expensive than the other though :-)

That was actually the last car on this train. Notice all the vents on the side as seen when it enters the Moffat Tunnel.

Those are two stroke diesels. Sky high particulates.
Thumbs up on this one for your mom.
If I missed this I apologize.
When did you video this? Early September?
How much did you tip all of the attendants?
I still find it odd that Canada's Rocky Mountaineer is operating in the United States.
Is this one of those trains where the narrator never stops talking?
"ten big curve" was on that track ? or are they another way ?
Quel est le taux d'électrification du réseau voyageur américain ?
7:29 are those romanian train tickets that you have in the phone cover?
yup, IRN 1837
Yep lol ! Good catch ;)
On my phone the print is too small to read easily.
It does seem a lot slower than the equivalent Amtrak!
More time to enjoy the scenery, perhaps? 😊
@@terin1862 Would surely annoy UP, who would want it pushed through at 110 mph non-stop if single track, as it seems to be!
@@terin1862Nah. Amtrak is 2 days on average
How do you get back to Denver?
Good question... There's a bus to Green River, UT or Salt Lake City. From here you can take the California Zephyr
Great video. I was surprised at how smoky it was. It can take away from the scenic aspect of the journey. Not to mention the pollution when you are outside.
Ahhh, but nostalgia, love the smell of a steam train.
Why does the train have to stop for other train to go by? It looked like plenty of room to pass.
Vast majority is single track. As noted on other videos, even the California Zephyr gets priority because it's a scheduled intercity train. This is purely a tourist train.
Because its singled track. We dont want a collision similar to the 2008 metrolink crash right?
Awesome video but can you do voiceover videos
No, please don't
Go to Iran. You will have amazing train rides with amazing landscapes🎉
If only it could have been THREE Days Of Excess...
Its super scenic, but honestly the california zephyr is far more scenic, especially through colorado.

You seriously expect this to be 150?
