For me, calling and thinking of it as a "push" was the most confusing part of learning to skate properly and double push. Yes, it looks like and is technically a push, but thinking of it as a push set me up for failure. I kept trying to push with muscle power and got exhausted quickly. Only after watching videos of the powerslide team skating from behind did it click for me. I started focusing on rocking my hips, and getting pressure immediately on the landing skate. By not thinking about the push, the slow and smooth motion came naturally when I got the hips and compression right. Before that, I would land my skate and try to get an outside edge, but because I was consciously thinking about pushing the other leg out, there was no compression in the landing skate.

Makes sense! Perhaps "pressure" is a better thing to focus on than "push"?

      Hi!
You are absolutely right. it's more about generating even pressure across the entire motion, which means it's more about shifting weight around, and less about generating power through pushing.
Which is super backwards for us fitness skaters. It takes a while to master, and means rethinking the whole idea of pushing on skates.

@@PowerslideInlineskates Yep. At least for me, I realised there is no "push". It really is just a continuation of compression in the skate, but using the hips to abduct away from the body. Just like Joey Mantia said in his video: "it's a manipulation of your edges under load, using just your core and hips". I was doing the hip abduction movement he described, but it was seeing the Team Powerslide training skate in Tempelhof and watching their hips from behind that made me realise I needed to swing my entire hip. The difference in feel and speed when I get it right is obvious, but it's not 100% consistent yet. Still trying to unlearn ingrained habits from fitness skating technique.
