- In this video I'll show you how to make this unusual woodworking tool - a squaring stick (or pinch stick).
The key to a good box or casework build is squareness. Sometimes that's difficult to achieve or measure for. Squaring sticks, or pinch sticks, take the guesswork out of box building by taking and transferring accurate diagonal measurements. But they don't stop there; they're probably one of the most useful layout and measurement gauges in my shop!
They're pretty easy to build, and I highly recommend you do so.

Painters tape is probably one of the most underrated tools we have in the shop haha
I just used it as a makeshift zero clearance throat plate on my table saw!

Good video that shows various useful techniques to make a tool with limited use. Normally I just use any 2 narrow sticks held together with spring clamps.
Don't know that I'll make the sticks but the tape idea I will use!

It may be that the dense mystery wood is Osage Orange also known as Ironwood. I can vouch for the weight and hardness.
Hi, I seem to have an aged supply of this wood... i think at least. Density is almost 1,03. It is really really hard. Almost impossible to work with. And i can't identify it. Are you sure about the wood? Is it possible to sent you images? I am REALLY interested in identifying this wood for months now! :D

I've used pinch sticks for scribing hundreds of funky big noggins with way-off compound angles on both ends-you find your point to point distance and then ensuring the pinch stick is in the correct plane (face) you can set your bevel guages for both angles at each end directly from the face edge of the sticks
Have u thought about getting a tablesaw blade with 'flat' ended teeth so you don't have to clean out the bottom of the cuts?
Videos like this make me not want to make videos. I had a very similar idea to build as a video, but it seems that I would be a copy cat if I make one now. Great video and build.
Stratify masking tape to adjust precision is a good trick. I like the detailed explanations in the video. I have used once a similar trick to fit a saw blade in a wood handle. Handle leaned on a flat surface, blade leaned on a pile of A4 sheets, adding or subtracting sheets to adjust the position, and cut the handle with the blade itself.

Just recently found your channel and I think it's great that you dont edit out the mistakes. I watch a lot of other channels and they never make mistakes in their videos. Seems very unrealistic. I think my next project is going to be an angle jig and a book holder. After that some squaring sticks to help with a new drawer build for my work bench.
Rich I'm not going to lie....I'm a little jealous that you're working on a workbench. I have a few more projects I need to power through then I'll be right there with ya. What kind of bench are you building?
@@Craftswright it's a plywood Frankenstein similar to the bench from Pask on the scrap wood challenge channel. It needs storage so that will be the next step.

I of the things you did that really got me? Showing how you cut yourself so easily! JUST LIKE ME! Of course the squaring stick or pinch stick had nothing to do with it! ;D So you have to put up with a cranky old man that has subscribed to the channel. Surprise, you did it with one video! Things like this fascinate me, especially since most of my woodworking is mental since I am very disabled and can do very little in my shop any more. I have to work 10 minutes and then sit and rest my back for 20 minutes. But don't feel sorry for me, it is all genetics from my parents.

Coplanar on all four sides, so you ground the stock into an atom thick sheet? :)

Orange dense wood could be Osage Orange
Wouldn't the gauges be more accurate if they were made out of metal? The tips if made from wood would eventually wear away making it an inaccurate way to measure. They look pretty in wood but even walnut will wear away from use.
Primarily these are used to square an opening, all that matters is the length, once its pinched tight the measure cannot change. Accuracy doesnt really come into play here, and wear dont matter as it wont wear from comparing one diagonal to another. Doesnt matter if theyre 100 years old, so long as they lock down tight they will still serve their function :)
Your table saw came with a blade guard. Why did you remove it?

Thanks! There are similar things (kind of) commercially available. Rockler has a bar gauge kit, and Woodpeckers has something similar, but both are ~$30 before materials vs $3 in bolts, washers and wingnuts lol

@@Craftswright i was installing drawers on a cabinet that had a sink in it before and now has quarts on it. The first one took me forever trying to take measurements and angles in awkward positions and came out ok. I didn’t want to repeat that struggle with the second one so I made some slide jigs and was thinking about using the telescoping magnet to replicate the front opening in the back of the cabinet. As I was looking for it I wondered if the magnet was gonna complicate things with the slides being metallic so that’s when I saw the multi angle ruler and thought yeah that might work better! It made a huge difference to make sure the slides were parallel to each other vertically and horizontally. I set them up to look like a very long H

I just tackled that’s project a couple of weeks ago and when I saw the thumbnail on your video I wondered if that was for what I was thinking it was for and yup I was like dang definitely need that in my tool box. It’s definitely a more precise version of what I used and way better built. Will try and make some when I get some of these other projects done.

Possibly, but I've honestly never worked with osage, so I would have no clue if it was or wasn't lol
the brief look I got certainly resembled osage orange to me.
Osage Orange is ring porous, as Oak or Ash. My memory could be playing tricks on me, but the mallet head I made forty years ago was more greenish than orange when freshly cut, I thought. Now it almost matches its Rosewood handle in color. Agreed that Osage is incredibly dense and hard.
Is the width and thickness both 7/8 inch?
7/8 is the minimum width for the sticks. Each side of the sticks should be at least 3/8" thick. You could go thicker if you wanted to. Hope that answers your question, let me know if not!

I hadn't planned on selling them, no. Maybe if I had a router table to really speed up production I might consider it.

Decorative enough,but practically, just use a lath,with a point,or a panel pin set in from one end.
Absolutely that works too, or just two sticks and you pinch them together with your hands, but this is meant to be more of a permanent tool, so it's gotta look nice ;)

You do so many people smear glue around with their fingers? It's a messy, easy method to not only inadvertently get glue on areas you don't want it but also introduce dirt and contaminates into the joint.
If you've ever had the satisfaction of peeling of a big piece of dried glue from your hand you'd understand lol

Could you be talking about the orange earplug string, dangling over the saw table? I almost pounced on that opportunity to pontificate about safety, myself, but then I realized that the saw blade catching that would have about the same effect as cutting a piece of tissue paper, so why make a fuss? And, using hearing protection stands for summat, eh?
Yeah that was not my proudest moment, but in hindsight, like you said, worst thing that would have happened is it would have jarred the headphones out of my ears and wasted $30 worth of bluetooth hearing protection lol
