- Back in the day it was just Kevin Jubbal (Med School Insiders) then Ali Abdaal, but these days more and more people quitting medicine. In fact, 2 "medfluencers" have quit in just the last couple of weeks. Why are so many people quitting/leaving the medical field? In this week's vlog, I share my opinion on the topic. Let me know what you think!

If you’re watching this… I JUST FINISHED MY FIRST EVER HALF MARATHON!!! 🥳
Wonderful news!!!
Nice! Those are super fun, hard, and worth it!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Yaaaaaay!
awesome sauce!!
“Be the resident you wish you had as a med student. Be the attending you wish you had as a resident.” I love this quote and with this mentality I believe it can fix a lot of these issues we have in medicine training
Totally agree! :)
One thing I will say is that over working Residents, Doctors, and really anyone in the healthcare industry is RIDICULOUS! These people need rest, and good pay. You can’t abuse people and overwork them and expect them to be okay with it. Period!
RETWEET FR!!
@@ShaunAndersen interesting time in life right now...other industries don't seem very accommodating either and they can't just keep saying it's the covid fall out.... the whole point of earning a living is so you can do some living.... too many of us dying for a living.
Those overworking them are those who haven't done anything close to difficult in the real sense of it.
They have certificates in management and squeezing the life out of professionals to save cost and maximise profit
Hello Sean...I have commented on your videos before, but as a physician (Physiatrist) who has practiced 25 years this video made me want to comment again. Although your energy/attitude/speech patterns are that of a young guy/new doc in his 20s, your thoughts are very well-reasoned and matured. I am consistently impressed with you; you obviously aren't thrilled with each and every moment of internship (who is?!!), but you clearly have a passion for what you are doing, work hard to do the right thing for your patients, and keep your eye on your long term goals rather than being myopically overly focused on instant gratification. I wish you continued good luck in your journey (and FYI, residency even after internship is hard, but will get much more palatable once you are focused on your chosen specialty).
That is so nice of you, wow. Thank you so much for the kind words :)
@ ....You're very welcome!! In all seriousness, everyone has a right to be tired and frustrated some days and even to vent/complain, but it is a pleasure to see young doctors that still overall are happy with their choice of career and have a positive rather than entitled attitude. Keep up the good work! Do me one favor, however, as a PM&R doc who is not an interventionalist....if you go the "pain management" route in anesthesia please take on the whole patient and don't just bill for the cool procedures and expect the Physiatrist to write a bunch of prescriptions!!! Then you'll really deserve ultra props!! :)
My mom is in the medical field and the issues such as burn out and politics are very much real. My mom is actually thinking about going back to school to somehow learn the law side of medicine. So if you’re seeing this and think medicine isn’t for you or you may get burnout. Definitely know that there are more ways to make a difference. From Medical influencer, teacher, doctor and law. So many ways to make changes
Sorry to hear your mom is burnt out but you’re so right there are so many jobs and professions where you can make a difference
@ShaunAndersen You are a star and as an older physician I’m proud of you for your depth of intelligence. It goes far beyond the truly indefinable rigors of medicine: You marry wisdom with thought with ideas and with soul, so your insights emerge as both heartfelt and “brainfelt,” too. Your personality sparkles and my one regret about your choice of Anesthesia is that most of your patients will never experience you in the way that even PCPs and specialists in most other fields do. That said, your future looks brilliant. Congrats on the 51K and I hope you are enjoying all of it every day.
Thank you so much that really means a lot ☺️ your support has been awesome and I appreciate all the valuable input you’ve provided on my videos! It means so much to me
Happy Birthday Chewy!!! I agree that people quitting medicine is not new...it's just in your face more due to social media. It's not easy for sure. But I applaud those who decide it's not for them...rather than spend a whole life miserable. You...Dr. Shaun are a breath of fresh air...you know this is a process. This feels like forever .but it's not. Easy for someone who is not in the field to critique others. Great video. ..Doctor!...Good luck on the 1/2 marathon
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Keep going no matter how hard it's. YOU are going to be a fantastic doctor!
Thank you so much!!
i just stumbled on your videos and they are a breath of fresh air ! i've seen so many people sugarcoat what really goes on in the medical field and it's refreshing to hear what happens , pay transparency and so much more. keep it up!! i'm also in school to become a doctor
So glad you like the videos! I try to stay as transparent as possible!! :)
Happy birthday Chewy!!! I remember when you first got him in medical school...how time flies!
Great video as always, Shaun, your growth is truly inspirational.
Thank you so much! :)
You’ve been preparing for this tome since the beginning 😊of residency. This next challenge is supposed to be difficult compared to for the lifetime of taking care of your future patient and yourself keep those two babies close to you snuggle them love them. They love you. We all love you. You’re an inspiration to anybody who’s going after what they want. You will be just fine. Just keep your faith. He’s got your back. You’re gonna be a great doctor. Thank you.
Thank you so much!! :)
I only recently started following you and I enjoy watching your videos. I myself am not in the medical field but I have the upmost respect for the medical field workers.
That means a lot!! :) thanks so much!
Your content has honestly been so damn good, i am an OG America Revere fan for years and your vlogs have been just so real and raw like hers, literally my new favourite!!!❤
Such a huge compliment :) thank you so much!!
Good call. Too many people assume that they just have a cold when it’s Covid. I think physicians have the responsibility to not possibly infect their patients with whatever they may have.
Agreed!
SHAUN! Hope you’re well. I can’t believe I’m saying this, I’ve been watching your channel from the early days and I have just been accepted into medical school in Australia.
Watching your channel has been such a motivation, I feel so privileged and I’m excited to be on this journey which I’ve watched you take.
YOOOO CONGRATS!!! You’re going to freaking crush it!!!
Advice from a woman old enough to be your mother - stick with it until you get through your anesthesiology residency to see whether or not this really is for you. To make that easier, try to focus on the positive rather than the negative. Then, if you do stay in the field, work to make residency better for those who come after you. You are an exceptional young man!
That’s the goal :) thanks so much for the wisdom!!
What would you advise to a med student who feels like theyre missing on life and fill unfulfilled but is still reluctant to quit because of the time they invested and because they arent sure it's the right decision 💔
I don’t know if you are asking me or Shaun. If you are asking me, I have no advice for you, I am sorry. I don’t know anything about you or your experiences how you have felt up to this point any of that. My advice to Shaun was based upon the many, many, hours of his videos that I have watched where I feel like I’ve gotten to know him a little bit, at least in terms of his pursuit of a medical career and what has been his enthusiasm throughout the process.
Hey I am in medicine too the prospect of burnout and mental health issues are really big concern. That keep you grounded. You are always better off to take it easy on your career if you want to last long in this profession 😅
Set limits as ego can be a huge driver for public acclaim. My mother was a doc. Gad huge anger issues - same with several of her colleagues. Ie Personality disorders ++. Emotionally and physically abusive at home.
I am currently a third year doctor of occupational therapy student, and although you are on a much more rigorous path than me, i totally agree with all of the points you made. i absolutely love OT and what the field is built on, but since I am on full time clinical and am now working full time in the field, you learn that healthcare is moving more toward strictly being a business rather than a passion project for majority of people and facilities. it absolutely was a culture shock going from full time didactic school work (learning everything in the most ethical and empathetic way) to clinical work (having to work with company policies and challenge ethics) and i think that is something that isn't talked about enough. i have no regrets choosing OT as my career, but being in healthcare is definitely not for people who JUST want to work for a paycheck. love your videos, especially from a rehab perspective!
unpaid full time clinicals btw :,)
it's heart breaking to see your fav influencers quitting , thank you for clarification😭
Agreed! :(
Thanks always for coming on here and explain every day life as a dr. Feel better soon ❤️
You are so welcome :)
12:00 starts good discussion and good POV for pre med students to hear
@Doctor-Hirst ❤ blessed that you are called and have a desire to please the Lord in your pursuit of this.
Im currently on an inpatient peds block right now for family medicine residency and honestly it is the hardest block i have ever done. I'm a visiting resident at a children's hospital so I'm with peds residents and they do 6 days a week with one week of nights. Sign out is at 0630 and 1700, the one day on the weekend it goes to 1830. For nights its automatically a 14 hour shift for 6 days and then we only have 24 hours to switch over back to day shift back at 0630 again. I had breakfast with my partner post call and then i just broke down crying because i was so worn down. Im so glad my home hospital is so supportive because if our family med service was like that, i dont think i would have survived intern year with my 4 months of inpatient. I think im also blessed because i dont have much professional passions outside of the traditional medicine route or else i maybe would have looked elsewhere tbh. Its so brutal but your tribe is so important ❤
Congratulations 🎉 🎊 on your first half marathon 👏. I'm glad you're feeling better. And happy late birthday to your little fur babies .
Thank you so much!!😊
I really love watching your videos almost every week. I've been around for your vlogs for about 6 months but I did go back and watch some of the earlier ones on a day when I was feeling sick from a cold. You inspire a lot of people, I'm sure, because you inspire ME !
You the man bro stay focused.. happy new years 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Happy new year!!
Congrats on finishing the half!!
Thank you!!
Still following you on your med journey continuing to do so well, true desire to help others!!
Appreciate you supporting the channel all this time! )
Such a luxury to spend so much money on getting into residency and medicine and being like Im quitting medicine. Such a privilege. Not everyone can just quit what they have started without being in an extreme amount of debt.
0:41 I thought I was the only person who still has those old LaserJet 4000/4050 printers in production use in 2024-25. As long as they still work, the toner is so cheap and if you need parts or replacements, they're everywhere usually for free.
I think one thing that makes it so surprising that people quit medicine is that people work so hard specifically to pursue this career and sacrifice so much it's just shocking that people quit after so much trouble they went through.
By the way...I recently discovered your channel and Shaun you're such an inspiration for people like me wanting to pursue medicine!🔥
Yeah and definitely...please no quitting medicine on your side!😂
I was a CNA 1 year then RN for 8 years in the ED. Now practice as a PA 23 years. Hang in there bud. Don’t give up'
That’s so amazing!!
Thanks for sharing your honest assessment of your medical school & residency experiences. You are right; for those going to medical school, it is important to learn to "embrace the suck." I work with clients planning to apply to medical school and often ask them, "Why medicine?". So many have been on the pre-med track for so long that they are focused more on the checklist of activities vs. activities that matter to them and how each will help them prepare for med school and become a physician. As a secondary topic, I think med schools should help med students learn more about the business of medicine.
Totally agree!!
My APN quit her career after 8 years. She had her first son and was so in love that she never wanted to come back to work. Finally, she resigned. I'm happy for her
I also got sick right before my half marathon a few weeks ago, managed to finish in 1:48!
Working in veterinary medicine is also crazy and we have one of the highest suicide rates in the US
Thank you Dr. Shaun!
we get the answer at around 12 mins :) God bless u doc! u inspire us other junior docs.. sorry about your dad.. I lost mine too while working- took some time off then went back.. we do have to take care of ourselves, so that we can take care of others and tell them to do the same!
Stick with it Shaun! You have a bright future ahead of you. We need doctors like you.
Your puppy dogs are so cute. I love watching your interactions with them. I also admit to singing along to your playlist in your car. Enjoy your "normal person" work weeks for this month.
First Happy Birthday Chewy.
Good luck on the marathon. You’re young enough for your body to recover. Don’t give up!!!
Thank you!!! :)
Glad u took the day off to take care of yourself and you feel better.
Me too ☺️
(tldr your vids are awesome) im in highschool rn and im figuring out what i want to do in life (im thinking a physician but i dont know what speciality) and these videos make me so excited to start my journey that im applying to shadowing internships near me, because its vids like this that are making me try harder/they are kinda my comfort vids.
I’m only here for the drive to work song of the morning.
Hope the marathon went well!!!
Sup sis :’)
Hey Shaun! I love your videos so much-they definitely keep me motivated to pursue a career in the medical field! Also, I love your taste in music; I’m always adding new songs from your playlist to mine!
Thank you so much!!
Hi Dr. Shaun! I see your passion for being a Dr. You seem so so kind! Your patients are so blessed having you having a wonderful bed side manner. Some Drs I have been too did not. I was just a number! So proud of you.. I just subscribed and glad I did.
Another good vlog. Glad you are feeling well and good luck in the race..
Thank you!!!
…what can I do to make the tomorrows of my patients better??????
….after that….do what your heart desires!
I absolutely love your videos and talks. Currently in 3rd year in med school
Thank you!! Best of luck with third year!
I appreciate the way you think, and things do get hard, in the end character matters and l admire you!
A few weeks l didn't even know you and its my second Sunday waiting for your videos
I appreciate that so much :) thanks for joining the journey and supporting the channel!
Happy belated birthday, Chewy and good luck on your marathon! 🍀 Your ability to balance your lifestyle despite your tight schedule/rotation is always inspiring to us. By the way, I’d love to see more of your ‘study with me’ videos; they really help motivate me to study. 🤩
Chewy says thank you!! :P and I definitely miss making those videos but it’s sooo hard now since most of my studying is done at work
Nice to see a young guy with this great attitude 👍
Thank you!! :)
Thanks for taking the time to read and respond when you can....that's highly appreciated ❤
You are so welcome :)
Hope the marathon was thrilling!
It’s crazy when it comes to older physicians, and what they have to say about the hardship in medicine. Lot of older doctors always say that they went through the same so we shouldn’t complain. 😢
It was so fun! And agreed! Just bc it’s been a certain way for a while doesn’t mean it should stay that way
It sucks because the burn out doesn't end with just the hospital. I'm a paramedic and the burnt out with EMS is insanely high too! we have had a few medics at my company completely switch fields to HVAC and other trades. I just hope that something can change in the near future to help with quality of life changes for hospitals and prehospital.
True, you really see it in all medical fields :(
Your sweet doggy babies are absolutely precious!
I love them :’)
You are a breath of fresh air ! Congratulations on your 1/2 marathon (knew you would do it)🎉
Thank you so much!!
The fact that people are leaving the medical field is no excuse for toxic behavior. Devoting years of your life to a career only to walk away reflects a deeper, more troubling issue within the profession itself, rather than the individual.
Anyone who currently works in the healthfield knows how toxic it is. And it all starts from the top chain. ICU RN over 10yrs n I’m leaving bedside soon. ❤on your residency
Happy Belated Birthday to Chewy!!!!🎉🎂🥳 Glad u are feeling better!!!! You are so right about we shouldn’t be so surprised about people changing careers from medicine to something else. It’s just a person’s choice based on their own personal reasons!!!! Look forward to your next video!!!🙏☀️🙏☀️🙏
Other than being another doctor influencer I can't see you doing anything else. You're always so happy and positive at your job. Even with all your administrative and paper work you do it's always so much positivity from your videos. Some people were meant to do something in life and you were meant to be doing this.
Aww Happy Belated Birthday Chewy!!! 🎉 😊 🐶
Thank you!! 😊
Shaun, don’t know what the guidelines are in the US but as you may already know, the gold standard in the management of acne and to prevent long term scarring is Oral Isotretinoin
I’ve used it before, I may go see my dermatologist and get back on it
@ wow I’m honoured that you responded to my comment. I’ve been following you for sometime now. I’m a Plastic Surgeon in the UK, so enjoy your content.
Honestly definitely worth going back on it
Awesome finishing your half marathon!
Thank you!!
I think all the doctors need to get together and bring this to Congress. Something has to be done about these crazy work hours driving the doctor shortage. In my field we can only work a total of 14 hours because is safety concerns. Should be the same in medicine
Congrats on your half marathon👍 awesome! I was wondering what your thoughts on MD-PhD programs?
Thank you!! & I think they’re great if you know you want to do a lot of research during your career
1st let me say i think u may need a larger scrub top as your upper arm muscles are out growing your sleeves.😊as for Doctors quiting. Its not just Resident's. Ive lost so many awesome Doctors of 8 to 10 yrs. Man although i cried alot. I fully understood. We thought it would slow down once the hospitalists started. It only increased the clinical pt volume to a large burn out. Were so short in alot of fields. Your rt, its not our place to judge. Be supportive instead. Happy birthday to your precious doggie s. Awesome vlog! 😊❤So glad your feeling better.😊
Goodluck with the halfmarathon!
Thank you!!
Having had my own long history of being involved with medicine as a patient I would like to see more doctors and nurses say the words I don’t know. I feel like there’s a lot of doctors and nurses who are too sure themselves and always too quick to dismiss patients or think they know the answer answers before doing the research.
OMG and you are doing a FULL marathon in the Spring per your Instagram?
Can you do a video on your running journey for those of us on a similar journey but run
Great video. I'm glad you have such a positive outlook. I'm sure things will get better in the future, as cliche as that sounds.
Are you in the US?
We have the same undergrad stats but in Canada we have very little space to get in so it makes it a bit tougher (for med school).
I'm currently in a Master's program and will be applying next cycle, hoping for the best and watching your videos daily for insight.
Keep going!
Thanks so much!! :) and yes I am in the US. Best of luck with your applications 👏
Good luck on your half marathon ! 🎉
Thank you!! 😊
I think burnout, toxicity in the workplace, low pay, long hours and not enough work/life balance can be found as reasons to quit across all occupations not just in the medical field. In every business you will have nurturers, bullies, schemers and friends and these factors alone can make a very good person turn and walk away even from jobs they love. I guess it all comes down to what is most important to you and I think drive and an inner knowing that this is your chosen field no matter what the barriers are are frequent traits found in people who feel they were meant to be doing the work they are doing. If you are meant to be doing the work you are doing then hold your head up high and walk through the mire and realize your dream and if this isn't your dream then find a new one and throw caution to the wind.
Maybe when you are done with residency you should be a teaching doctor in the hospital? A family friend was asked to teach residents right after med school and he loves it. It’s now been about 20 years for him.
I would love to be in academics one day!!
Do NOT feel bad for taking a sick day man. Take full advantage of the days you have available. It’s a job and if something were to happen to you they would replace you. Once you start anesthesia residency will it still be hectic or do you think it will be chill?
In which minute he starts talking about the topic
happy birthday to the puppies!!!
They say thank youuuu 🥳🥳
Yay Shaun! Keepin' it real! HBD to your pup🐕🐾 Vote on Tuesday 🇺🇸
Thank you!! And I definitely am!
I'm glad you feel better. I just realized you are here in Vegas. I know that Ramen restaurant.
Don’t quit you are the best
serious question: why do we expect our healthcare clinicians to sacrifice their mental and physical health. this is not humane. how is this “part of the deal”? what is the reason for that
Iconic 0:57
Hope the marathon went well!
It was soooo much fun!! :)
I’m a new subscriber, and enjoy your listening to your perspective on “life”; thanks for the positivity! I have a strange question for you…what editing software do you use for your videos? I JUST started making videos for my grandkids (for their eyes only), and I love the clarity of your images (your drive, walking with fellow residents, etc). Thanks in advance!
Thanks for supporting the channel!! :)
I film with my iPhone and edit with Final Cut Pro!
@ Thank you, and glad to see your reply because that means you survived your half-marathon!!!!
Since early 2000, we add more than 30 medical school in usa. Now, general surgery residency programs is becoming full separately from 3 years plastic surgery fellowship will be new 6 years plastic surgery residency programs after you done from medical school. Same thing as cardio surgery residency programs, vascular surgery residency programs, thoracic surgery residency programs. These surgery residents will be still working with general surgery service up to 2 or 3 years in their early residency programs. Premed students please spend on time your dream medical or surgical specialty alot before you join in medical school because during 3rd years will be only focus on core medical or surgical specialty and you have to made the biggest decision of your lifetime choosing the medical or surgical specialty between end of 3rd and beginning of 4th year of your medical school experience. All medical school clinical block is not same because some medical school don't have home programs of your dream medical or surgical specialty like neurosurgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, dermatology, etc.
My brother is a doctor and had his own practice but Covid closed it down and he sold it to Banner Health. Now he works for them and he is counting down the days till retirement. He is done with it.
So sorry to hear that :(
My old PCP went from his own practice to an HMO and he hates it. He said he cant treat patients the way that he wants. It is nearly impossible to find a private practice where I live; everything has been bought up here.
My doctor retired, albeit not young, but he was really sick of the insurance companies. But yeah, healthcare is all about turning and burning the patients nowadays. They ride you hard to push them out the door, even when they aren't ready to D/C. Our hospitalists are expected to manage 20 patients a day. These are often progressive/telemetry patients who need a lot of attention. I don't envy them. We've had a couple locums who had no business in the field and were forced out. I'd wager 50% of doctors, PAs/NPs, and RNs would never enter school if they knew how things were on the job. lol
I do agree with it’s not uncommon to drop out of med school and residency. But I think some people have a problem with is “taking a seat” from someone who would’ve finished it. Plus, not many people can drop out due to financial differences as in privileged individuals, which are mostly a minority group. There are other factors but I digress. lol
That is understandable but also those students earned their spots into medical school or residency and you can't often really know the reality of a situation until you begin it. Plus, unhappy, drained, and unmotivated doctors can also lead to malpractice.
@@You-dh1du I’m not saying that I care or anything if they decide to drop out. It’s has nothing to do with me and my future in medicine but I think the disconnect is: people who can “afford” to drop out and the ones that can’t because of financial constraints/differences. In addition to being at a disadvantage to acquiring another “good” job after leaving medicine due to prejudice and discrimination. The job market is hard these days. That’s what I’m saying.
The medical field lost me forever the moment "It felt really good to have a 2 day weekend" left your mouth 🤣
I am slowly getting heart problems by the stress I am going through everyday. My body just screams I need a break. I am looking for other people‘s health but ruining mine. I can’t do this 😢
lol imagine being called “the O.G quitter”
How can a doctor quit medicine and start a new career knowing that they still have to pay back student loans? Other careers may not provide the amount of income a doctor can make to pay off that Many loans from med school
As a viewer of RUclips channels run by doctors, I am a viewer of such channels only because I find it very interesting to see life from a doctor's perspective...When someone quits being a doctor and ventures into other businesses, their channels do not interest me any longer...It is my personal truth... So, when I see doctors quit and some of the reasons to quit could be due to the success they found on social media, I feel they must also realize that their success on social media was largely due to the fact that they were a doctor in the first place...So, I find quitting being a doctor a bit risky in the long run...
Wow, I have the same problem - 28 and still break out like I'm 14 😂
Good Luck on your Marathon,
Thank you!
Boycott Starbucks 😢 6:21
🥲🥲
I was wondering how much training did you receive on proper nutrition.
Why are you so smiley and happy all the time. What drug are you on as an anesthesia resident????!!!!!
I’m glad you feel better, did you hock loogies to help you feel better? 😂, you have cute toes at 0:22, you should give up on medical school, it’s hard work but it pays off, I could handle medical school, I have always wanted to be a anesthesiologist since it was a kid, I really enjoy donating to the anesthesiologist Foundation, since it was hard for me to go to college because of my cerebral palsy, they had reschedule my MRI for this week or next week because they are gonna put me to sleep because I jump at loud noise because of my cerebral palsy, I’m gonna tell my anesthesiologist I donate to the anesthesiologist Foundation! You rock man! I’m a country masculine gay guy
Always appreciate you stopping by and supporting the channel man 🙂↕️
@@ShaunAndersen you welcome
good luck your inspiration
Thank you! :)
Congrats on finishing your half marathon ❤
Thank you!! 😊
I ran my half marathon this morning and I’m sore😂
Yoooo congrats!!
How about a couple Sudafed and some Afrin?
Stream next time you fort!! 💪🏻
I should 👀 but fair warning we are terrible at it hahaha
Hello Shaunhappy sunday😵🙏🏻✋👍❤💯
Woohooo 🎉🎉🎉
@ShaunAndersen 😵👍🙏🏻
Happy Birthday, Chewy!🥳 Sending love all the way from the Philippines! ❤ By the way, Shaun, I absolutely love the music you play when you’re driving .😎🤘 Also, do you use Strava when you run/jog? If not, you might want to try it, it's like an IG for runners 😅
I could be wrong, but I feel like burnout with physicians could be a cultural thing. In the US (again I could be wrong), since healthcare is private and hospitals are seen as a business, residents and med students are used as cheap and free labor respectively, to help their bottom line, hence why they are being overworked. In the UK, everyone from the junior doctor to the senior is being overworked due to severe shortages of the necessary specialists.
While burnout is of course universal, I feel like certain parts of the world have it worse than others, each having their own reason, like I said above (again, correct me if I'm wrong). I study medicine in North Africa and I am starting 2nd year soon. So far it has been relatively chill, and from what other graduates tell me, the stress of later years is nowhere near as high as that of the final years in like the US or the UK (idk how yall manage yall built different fr 🔥)
Again burnout happens everywhere, but I can't help but feel that the culture and expectations of other nations tends to exacerbate the stress of this already stressful field and make it virtually unbearable to even the most stoic of people. I'm glad the Dr. Shaun and others have not been quiet about this issue and I hope we can raise our voices together and let everybody know that this isn't okay.
