    Thanks much for this! I've been going to the Bachfest Leipzig for the past couple of summers and have heard the Passions and the Mass in B-minor. But of course, not a single note of the Christmas Oratorio because it is so associated with Christmas. I even wrote their director Michael Maul an email suggesting that they do the Christmas Oratorio at Bachfest for those of us who never get to hear it because we are English speaking countries where we only get to hear Handel's Messiah. I live in Honolulu, Hawaii, 8,000 miles from Thomaskirche and can't just take a tram there. Btw, caught NBS performance of cantatas (including the utterly magnificent Ein Feste Burg BWV 80) at Nikolaikirche in 2022. The long standing ovation was well deserved.

    • @ariadne4720
      @ariadne4720 Год назад +2

      @@hiw9528 honestly, if the NBS puts this recording up (this year?! Please!), it will definitely become my favourite and go to recording of the Christmas Oratorio. As good as the Gardiner is, the tempi for my taste are by and large too fast, and emotion is lost, which is not what you want with this (or any) Bach piece.

    The more one studies Bach--especially the cantatas--the more one sees that he was not only one of the great composers in history but also one of the best and more creative dramatists. Where other composers are up-front with text painting, Bach is more hidden. Like a cypher. Once the key is used, his intentions become clear, and it is thrilling.

      Perhaps in future, Shunske could return in some capacity to continue collaborating with NBS on a part year basis. It seems there is a need for him right now to do more conventional touring, recording and works, other than Bach. He is an extraordinary musician and artist, so he has to go in the direction that his passion takes him.

    The music is sublime. To me it is even more interesting when we look at the progression in performance practices looking back to Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus contrasting those performances which were for their time seismic with today’s marvelous work. It’s wonderful to behold and a joy which takes me back forty years as though it was yesterday. Thank you for continuing the exploration and development which enriches all of us in ways we may not fully grasp.
    Peace

    Great music from the master that is Bach one of my all time favourite composers. Regarding Christmas which is Yuletide reimagined, I wish one day, that our European nations can return to their native folkish roots a.k.a. Pagan, but updated for the modern world. Over one thousand years of Abrahamic mind control has diminished our connection to our own ethnic folk faith that is many thousands of years old.

    Maestro Sato, My sincere thanks for your impeccable scholarship. It was a joy to watch this piece. I only humbly disagree on one point. It is true that the shepherds were called upon to sing a lullaby to baby Jesus in No. 18. However I don’t believe that number 19 was misplaced by Bach. I believe that Schlafe mein Liebster was coincidentally intended as a lullaby from Mother Mary to Jesus as evidenced by the intimate lyrics a mother would sing to her baby. I may be wrong, but it is something to consider. Thanks again for this beautiful video!

    It is very very pity, that Shunsuke Sato is no more musical director of this Bach Society.
    On 30 May 2023, Sato resigned as the concertmaster, soloist, and artistic director of the Netherlands Bach Society after a farewell concert.
    Perhaps nobody can play better the role of artistic director in this society than Sato.

    Klaus Eidam in his Bach bio Das wahre Leben des Johann Sebastian Bach (The True Life of Johann Sebastian Bach) was able to set the record straight because he did what Spitta and everyone else that followed him didn't do: he read the Leipzig city council records. Eidam devotes several pages to the Christmas Oratorio. Bach reutilized secular music for sacred ends, but never the reverse, which would be similar to taking an altar flower and sticking it in one's buttonhole.

    Some of the arias and recitatives in the Oratorio arguably represent the voices of Biblical characters: soprano - an Angel, contralto - Mary, Tenor ´- the Evangelist and bass - Herod. The lovely aria "Schlafe, mein Liebster" seems to be sung from the perspective of Mary watching her son.
