Just did a review of this one a couple of days ago and I am quite a bit impressed with this thing, for the price a nice utility knife, nice to see the insides here, I suspected that there where no washers but for that the action on mine was quite nice :)
    Have a nice day!

I just picked up a Tuff Lite, the action was a little stiff so I took it apart and found there was one washer installed . I thought it was kind of weird to have just one washer. I didn't see you check the other side of the blade. I wiped it down and re-lubed it and now it I am able to flick it open, action is much better.
Thanks to you Nick I am very comfortable taking apart my knives and cleaning/lubricating them. That is pretty much the first thing I do when I get a new knife. It always seems to make the action much better than from the factory.

Nick, thanks for taking the time to do videos on cheap knives too. I've never taken a knife apart, and so I feel more comfortable learning on an inexpensive knife like this one. Can't wait to give it a try!

You can try to store it in the half way position to loosen the tension bar. Although I haven't tried myself some people swear by it.
Personally prefer the strength at max for safety

I just took down my Spyderco Native 5 lw for the first time yesterday and I was quite surprised to find it doesn't have washers either. The blade still drops down onto my finger when I disengage the lock though so I guess it works fine. Oddly the action was smoother before I cleaned it. I also found it operates more smoothly without oil around the pivot (I still oil the tang a bit though).

Very instructional. Have arthritis in fingers so opening and closing knife is difficult. Couldn't close it at first and was considering returning. Will oil critical parts, but wondering whether using a dremel might make it easier to open and close? Any thoughts?

Tuff lite is actually one of my favorite knives to carry. Sweet little knife, and no worries about using or losing it. Washers or no, it's got great action after the breakin. The blade falls freely. No play. I admit I'm a little bit of a cold steel enthusiast despite the politics and carcass stabbing videos. Cts-xhp is pretty good steel. Even if the knives look "murder-y" I can imagine using some of the big folders for bushcraft. And of course the zombie apocalypse.

Anon Omus I like my mini tuff lite alot. I've also heard that this knife has a strangely huge fan base among woodcarvers. it apparently has just the right blade shape, especially on the mini, for an EDC detail carver.

I've got one of these and I can't believe there's no washers just raised plastic, "disgusting" I won't be getting any more cold steels. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Honestly, is it so different than using teflon washers? Harms longevity, sure, but it's a TuffLite. It's ugly, but it's not the end of the world. The Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight does the same thing.

Nick Shabazz Well they are using GRN so it makes me wonder a few things like will it wear the blade around the pivot via glass on metal? or would it polish that area instead and keep a smooth area at that spot? and would the raised portion last longer than than nylon washers because it is reinforced?

Adding oil which is going to collect grit and work it into the mechanism is what is really going to cause harm here. Even still, I'd be hard pressed to believe that even if you spent all day, every day fidgeting with your knife that you could ever wear away enough material from the mating surface to cause issue with operation. I'm no fan of Cold Steel, but barring any evidence to the contrary I see absolutely no problem with this style of construction.

rockets4kids Its true. imo a cold steel knife is always a throw away. ive owned a couple and only so i wouldnt ruin a decent knife.

Should you not have removed the old Locktite before adding new stuff? Just asking...

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  8 лет назад +2

Once removed, it's pretty much inactive. Perhaps in a perfect world, and if it gets really excessive, I will, but it's not often a problem.

I just picked myself up the same set of Wiha drivers. Its a very high quality set and has practically everything I need. However, I feel like a terrible person because I bought them before I realized you had a referral link. Please forgive me Nick!

It's FUNNY how you BASH Cold Steel for it's "washerless construction" on a $30 knife...when Spyderco doesn't use any washers on it's Native 5 LW and many other FRN models...

If you go through the cost and trouble of trademarking something, then it kind of only makes sense to defend that trademark. You may not like it, because you feel that the term being trademarked - predates the trademark etc. Or you feel like the trademark is being used to "bully" other makers, but the defense of these kinds of trademarks is hardly new, and hardly unique to Cold Steel. That's why we get Zenimax/Bethesda going after smaller companies who "dare" to use the term "scrolls" in their videogame titles. Or why "Prey for the Gods" became "Praey for the Gods". And I'm sure there are dozens of other examples out there, like I would really not be surprised if Coke and Pepsi have done similar things. Hell, even "Happy Birthday" is copyright, and you can be sued for singing it/playing it in public, and I'm sure there are tons of examples in the music industry. So do you have to like it on an ethical or moral level? No, but does Cold Steel have every right to defend their trademark? I'm gonna say yes. Just like everyone else who has a trademark. That's what they paid for. Also "tip down" carry is superior to "tip up" for 2 reasons 1) it's safer, and 2) it's better for tactical deployment/indexing. Not hating, I like your vids, just giving an alternate perspective.
