I love my Pipe Hawk. It's so versatile and capable. I use mine for making kindling, chopping limbs off logs that I'm going to turn into firewood, and even cutting down small trees. It's easy to use with one hand or two hands. As a carpenter, all my pants have a hammer loop. I love that I can stick my Pipe Hawk into the hammer loop and carry it with me when I go for a walk in the woods. And it's great at driving nails too! The long handle gives it the speed and power to sink nails in just one or two blows.
I carry my hawk with me to the woods. Use it building ground blinds and trimming brush. Yes, they’re not an axe but carrying one of my axes stuck in my belt doesn’t work well.
They all look pretty nice! I think I prefer a doe's foot handle for any hatchet because i can better prevent it from rotating in my hand when it stikes, and the flair at the foot can help create a bit more power too. I like the pipe
I have the frontier hawk. Scablands Scavenger has a series on the Cold Steel hawks. Being able to remove the head and use it has a hand tool is a plus. If you're not building a log cabin or chopping down big trees, a hawk will work just fine out in the field. ✌️
Cold steel is a great brand, I have several of them; however my favorite hawk is from CRKT woods chogan hawk. Very similar to the pipe hawk but CRKT doesn't use set screws.
Great video, Brian. Thanks. Sold me on the Hudson Bay, love the bit shape, length and obvious heavier weight. I love tomahawks too, but the ones I’ve tried to split firewood down with convinced me that they’re way too light. I think a 2lbs. bit is minimum needed.
Bought a cold steel hawk about 3 years ago. Love it! Seems to hold an edge. Sharpened to mirror finish. Bought leather sheath. Use if for backpacking, and bushcraft. Even cuts feather sticks fairly well. Love it!
Have the Pipe Hawk and it’s Big Brother the Riflemans Hawk both from Cold Steel. Love them both and keep the Rifleman’s hawk broken down in my truck tool box 😉
I have the pipe an the frontier hawk.love both of them.i also have 3 Bowie bush knifes .cold steel tools r awesome.oh all cold steel tools r great for throwing.glad to c u enjoy them too.👍👍
I love my pipe hawk and trail hawk… that was until I got the CRKT Chogan Hammer in the mail today. Love the feel of that hawk. For the record, the rifleman’s hawk was not worth my time.
Its very good , I have been abusing one for over 10 years . Cheap , basic . I had to modify the handle , but everybody who has one , knows they will have to do this . For as light as it is , it bites deep into wood . Get rid of the set screw , real tomahawks are supposed to be able to drop their heads , for use as a scraper . Tension fit only .
I belonged to a black powder club. So I grew up with Hawks of many kinds. A few of them even home made. This is the first time I seen one where the hawk head has a pin to hold it on the handle. We have Hawk throwing contest, the handle often gets split out doing this, and needs to be replaced. And what you call the pip hawk there is not a real pipe hawk. They were mad to use as a real smoking pipe. I own two of them. The handle is hollow and takes a bit of time to make and do it right. I even have one that made of brass hawk head, what is mostly meant for looks, but at the same time can be used just like an iron hawk.
Thx for sharing those interesting facts! Do you made a comparism vid with a gransförs wildmark hatchet? As a german I really like some comparism (not dissing) between some european and us made tools. Would be nice and cheers!
What is your preferred throwing distance for those assuming that plays into it? Im definitely getting one brian! Thanks! Look forward to the sharp Saturday vids
in the comparison put also also Rinaldi Art. 319 and CRKT wood chogan and Barebones Field Hatchet... Bahco is probably a rebranded Rinaldi about old stuffs, new stuffs are mostly China made with horrible heat treatment of cutting edge.
I have all three tomahawks. I like the trail hawk the best. It has a more even balance. You know they are cast, not forger. I removed the paint and used gun blue on them. I also stripped the finish off the handles. Sanded them and staind them. And burnt markingd on the handles. They look cool as hell.
It does better as a tool with a shorter handle. Take off about four inches. Then it makes for a traditional hammer or a compact fighting hawk. You can still chop with it too, but that's not really where it excels.
The tomahawk throw that splits the tree was the beginning credits of Daniel Bonne.. Ed Ames was not a native American but he was part Ukrainian from his mother. Nice hawk throws .
I use one for throwing myself and it works fine lol but I removed the set screw in the side so it wouldn't dig a channel into the handle, just curious about how far away from the board are you?
Out of all Cold Steel hammer-end tomahawks, I like the Pipe Hawk better than the ultra-light Trail Hawk and the heavier Rifleman's Hawk (unwieldy in the 22" handle configuration). I still recommend you'd try the latter though, but I actually exchanged the handle for the longer handle and languettes of the Cold Steel War Hammer. This upgrades makes the Rifleman's Hawk a lot cooler.

I've got two Pipe Hawks. Both of them I took a sharpening puck to and got a fine edge. Love them both.

I saw this in my feed this morning and have been looking forward to watching it all day! Love your content Brian.
Daniel Boone was a man he was a big man
I really want the Hudson bay hawk. I have the trailhawk and the frontier hawk.
I really love coldsteel tomahawks.

Which one do I like best? I'm glad you axed.
I have the trail hawk. I stripped the finish off then gun blued it. Sanded the handle to expose the grain and then burned it.
I bought a CRKT Chogan i like it! I sharpened mine to very close to hair poppin sharp

I've got a pipe hawk put together in the style from ww1 and I love that thing
WW1?
Yes I read that some of those "Mad American Soldiers" took Tomahawks into the trenches along with their shotguns.
You know what they say "Don't bring a knife to a 'hawk fight.". Lmao
Bryan... thanks for the cool review and your delightful sense of humor!! I want one!! Ax
Thx for sharing those interesting facts! Do you made a comparism vid with a gransförs wildmark hatchet? As a german I really like some comparism (not dissing) between some european and us made tools. Would be nice and cheers!
You should check out the CRKT chogan! It seems like a tomahawk like axe.
Hello, one question, trail pipe and rifleman hawk share same handle slot dimensions ?
What is your preferred throwing distance for those assuming that plays into it? Im definitely getting one brian! Thanks! Look forward to the sharp Saturday vids

Anchor that log down first Brian before chopping! Just a thought.
@@IronsitePistols do the same..... just a thought.
Any love for the Riflemans hawk?
Great video buddy

I agree with the balance. I actually cut about 5 inches off the bottom of the pipe hawk to get the rotations smoother. Throws like a champ now!!
They are drop forged not cast
They are absolutely forged, the are drop forged.
I love my pipe hawk

Good review Brian, thanks for sharing YAH bless !
I have tried to throw hawks and similar for years but....I just cannot train myself out of dropping or flicking my wrist just before letting go 😡
Why
@@DinoNucci why not?
Cool video. I always like your videos. Thank you 👍
The tomahawk is my fuarit i have 5 from iron wolf❤😊
Nice video.
Looks good 👍.
Outstanding video as usual Brian.
One question, which chopped better: the Hudson Bay, or the Pipe Hawk?
Nice hat, where may I get one?
Walmart just came out with a new tomohawk wonder how it compares
If you want a good Hawk. get the Spike hawk and cut the spike off. My fave hawk.
Did not get a notification for this one.

You stole my hat! Its a Tilly!
You had me at throwing tomahawks
It hurt my heart to see you scraping the cutting edge along the fat wood. even tho I know the reasoning behind it.
A credible tomahawk review until John Q Peckerwood decided to light the fat wood with his yellow Bic.
Shouldn't call it a pipe hawk ya can't smoke out of it😮
Why would you want to throw your tools at something
Realy .
First one I bought was the CS Riflemans Hawk . THAT thing is a honker!😂
