This is from 2006. Probably my most favourite version, as well as the one from 2004 live TV studio session. Yes, the original 3 members of Epica are Mark, Coen and Simone. Drummer was Jeroen Simons, bass Yves Huts and guitar Ad Sluijter. Arien joined in 2007, Isaac in 2009 and Rob in 2012.
Simone definitely sounded differently, especially her operatic head voice. That was one of the main reasons I fell in love with Epica immediately, besides their top-notch songwriting. Absolutely stunning voice. No one else sounds like she did back then. It was an immature undeveloped soprano but very warm and ethereal, and surely unique. Some fans even say they are missing the young Simone's voice. This concert was digitally remastered, just like the 2004 live TV studio session called "We will take you with us". They are now all available in HD/4K quality.
Rob van der Loo joined Epica on 2012...back in the days...on 2006 until 2010 he was the Delain bassplayer 😉Yves Huts was the original Epica bassplayer from 2002 until the release party of Requiem at 013 Tilburg ...
For me this concert has the best mix of Mark's vocals. It's really worth going through as there are a lot of older songs you haven't heard yet. Cheers! :D
You'll notice a little editing error on the original recording where they use the wrong but similar section from that high up camera behind the band at 01:06 to 01:08 (original video time) where she puts the mic down but is still heard singing.
Paradiso is one of the greatest venues in the Netherlands. It's a former 19th century church and as a venue pretty small, but so much atmosphere, maybe because of its small size; its always an intimate experience to be at a concert there.
Yves, the bassist, is left handed. That's an easy way to identify who it is. This show was from 2006, and yes, Coen had a lot of hair. LOL! He probably misses it terribly.
09:41 I think she has become more efficient with her voice allowing her to do what she has always done but without wear and tear. Learnt new ways to do the same thing but sounded slightly different perhaps. Same result though.
She has definitely developed her head voice over years, but I was totally in love with her young immature soprano. Incredibly beautiful, just like she is. I can't think of any other singer who sounds like she did back then.
Is this the best performance of Sensorium by Epica?
