  • Tioman Island in late July and early August, summer 2024 we spent an incredible 6 day vacation from our digital nomad working while traveling lives on a tropical island off peninsula Malaysia in the South China Sea. Split the time between Juara Beach on the East where the sunrises and ABC Beach on the East where the sunsets. Crystal blue waters and many lazy beach days at villas that face the sea. The sunburn and sandfly bites, were worth it! One of the best things in life are those turquoise blue waters that some places in the world have, and you can find that everywhere here!
Snorkeling twice, once on 5 stop island trip where I saw 5! Sea Turtles, a few literally next to me breaching for air, and countless colorful tropical fish. Also saw small sharks and giant clams. Jungle trekked on another day to the center of the island where we got lost, saw a viper in a tree, and finally found the waterfall. Saw giant flying fox bats, monitor lizards, and cats everywhere. The island also has an environmentalism attitude which I like. Hardly any rubbish or plastic in the sea, on beaches, are everywhere. Signs with environmental messages. Thumbs up for that.
Also, a ridiculously cheap duty free law that makes alcohol up to 3 times less expensive than the rest of Malaysia, which I really liked. Got some good foods like spicy Borneo style chicken and more. Surprisingly, to me at least, a well-known destination for fans of diving, families, and travelers from all of the world. Europeans like Germans, French, Dutch but also Spanish, Italians, Czechs and more I saw. Chinese and Russians I became friends with like usual. Koreans and even ran into an American and many more. An international community with a mostly Malay Muslim local population and others from around Malaysia and the world who made it their home.
A few hours ferry ride to get there from the mainland. I recommend it. A different vibe than other Thailand, Bali, Vietnam or other Southeast Asia island destinations. About $30-50 a night to stay right on the beach. We loved it! Next time I might stay a month or more. I just kind of just randomly let the camera record and put together small clips over the time there. You'll have to go someday to experience for yourself.
