  • 2013 Chrysler Town and Country. Front turn signals and hazards lights not working. Rear signals work fine. Bulbs good. Relays good. Ground wires good. Fog light switch lights up front turn signals.
Chrysler issued a TIPM firmware upgrade that revised the operation of the front turn signals and fog lamps in the TIPM for certain years/model vehicles. Due to these newer instructions, wires for these turn signals and fog lamps need to be adjusted in the connector going to the TIPM.
Vehicles that are affected are 2011-2013 Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Durango, Dodge Grand Caravan, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Volkswagen Routan, and Volkswagen Touareg.

I had the same issue on a 2010. No front turn signals either side. Bulbs not burned out. However, both sides had a burned wire on the bulb base. Both sides and same wire??? Changed out the bulbs and worked on the socket. Fixed the issue. Been trying to figure it out a while and finally just started looking at every connection.

Hey Bro - just changed the TIPM on my 2014 caravan that showed a code PO 480 and check engine with the low speed fan not working. A junk yard TIPM fixed it but now I have no front blinkers or flashers. Park lights work when turning headlights on. No front flashers. Blinker resets when ignition is off but when turned on, blinker sounds normal for 5 seconds then goes fast, all while both back blinker bulbs work but not front. I checked bulbs and fuses under dash in fuse box all are ok. Is it this new junk yard TIPM??? Is it from the wrong year? Should i have them exchange it for another one??? Or just do the wire swap trick as shown? Remember, it's a 2014! Help! Thanks!

If it's due to a TIPM being replaced, I wonder if there's a software update that could fix this?

  • @thewolfethatdwellswiththel6020

Seems to me like the manufacturers come up with ways to make money. Our van had just over 200k and the fuel pump relay went which is internal on the TIPM. Little bit of research told me it's a common thing. I put in a different TIPM, but now I have the exact same problem you were having with the front signal lights.

I’m having the same exact problem with my 2014 TNC. I’m looking at the description and I see the notices. Do you happen to know if they have a 2014 addition for this problem? Thanks watching you work through this answered a lot of questions I was having. I just replaced the tipm last month and suddenly I’m having weird electrical problems. Thanks again partner.

I cant image that this would issue would come from the factory... since 2013. Unfortunately, I do not know the history and can only suspect that the computer had an update. Instead of the programmer creating a new update, the manufacturer decided to allow the dealership to charge to fix this. It's BS!!! They are making it harder for normal people to do work on their own cars easily. If someone had updated the firmware or software on your mom's van and then this issue started, you should check the wires. If turning your fog light switch on is actually turning your directionals on, you probably need to switch those wires. If someone did not upgrade the software, then I would check fuses, bulbs, clean the bulb connectors, and check wires. I dont know if the software upgrade can happen automatically over cellular, wifi, gps, or if it can only be done by a direct cable connection with the 2016 model. Could this issue originate from another issue??? I dont know. But finding the form on how to resolve this was by luck. I searched over two weeks and accidentally found this. I will add a link to download the form I used. If you decide to try to fix this yourself, take pictures just incase it doesnt work and you need to put things back the way it was. Good Luck!

I just checked the directions and realized they are for 2011-2013. What you could do is put your directional on and check with a volt meter to see if anything is reading from you fog light connector. If you have fog lights, then they should flash... if they do, wires will need to be changed.... I dont know if they are the same wires or locations for 2016. Grand caravan and Chrystler town and country are mostly the same. Check everything else before attempting to do anything with the wires. Remember to take pictures of how things were before anything is changed in case you need to change things back. You can search for the wire color codes on the connector to see what they actually go to. Again, Good Luck!

Wait a minute. The signals worked when the van left the factory. They worked when it left the dealer's lot. They worked after the integrated power module was replaced, then somehow, magically, two wires jumped out and switched places, and now you have to switch them back? I understand the previous history is unknown, but I've been a Chrysler specialist since the early '90s, and have never, ever had to switch wires when replacing a module. That's the whole idea of putting wires in easily-removable connectors, so none can be put in the wrong place. How did the signals work the day before this problem occurred?
The only way this could be a "legitimate" fix is if someone tried to replace the integrated power module with the wrong part number. Chrysler has been well known since the 1960s as having the best parts interchangeability between models and years, so it is conceivable the wrong module could be plugged in, giving the false impression it should work. A 2016 Journey instrument cluster can work and fit in my 2014 Grand Caravan, so there's proof the wrong parts can be installed.
Referring to "software upgrades", as some viewers mentioned, replacement IPMs must be programmed to recognize fog lights because they're an optional system. If not properly configured when it's replaced, it can set misleading diagnostic fault codes when looking for systems that don't exist on that vehicle. Once programmed for the options on that van, nothing is changed or "updated" after that.
I have to wonder if the front signal wires were moved to terminals for trailer signals or were tied in to the rear light circuits. The signals and brake lights use separate bulbs and circuits, so tying the front and rear together would not make front lights turn on as brake lights. Also, I never saw the fog lights work. Information would show up on a scanner to indicate if the IPM is aware there's fog lights on the van. If it shows "not installed" on the data screen, or if the "Fog light switch state" doesn't come up on the list of data, that would point to the IPM was replaced with the wrong part number.
To add to the misery, it IS very possible to have a correct IPM with a different part number. When one is sent back for repair, if it also gets a minor upgrade for reliability, the part number's suffix will change from "AA" to "AB". If there have been a number of such revisions, the new number can end with "AG", AJ", etc. All of those are the same module, but with different levels of improvement. When a repaired module gets a major change or improvement, it gets a new sticker with a totally new part number. That new part number still gets listed as being for the certain car model and engine size. Since there can be different part numbers, go by the application when harvesting a used module from a salvage yard. Thanks to a horrible innovation from GM, most modules now have to have the VIN programmed in before they will work. Of course the dealer has to do that, and they don't do that for free.
IPMs or "totally integrated power modules", (TIPMs), do not need to be programmed unless a small module is bolted to the side of it. There's no computer electronics in most of them other than a dozen relays.
There's more to the story here that we don't know. Lacking that information, switching wire locations is not a legitimate way to repair electrical problems. Doing stuff like that just introduces more variables unknown to the next person who gets saddled with trying to figure out the cause of the problem.
I noticed a lot of time was spent on trying to remove the terminals from the connectors. That was not due to incompetence. To anyone trying to do that, getting those terminals out can be extremely frustrating, even for those of us who have done it dozens of times. Professionals run into these aggravations all the time. Once you get one connector figured out, they're all different on other car brands, so you have to learn them all over.

*DID NOT WORK FOR 2014 TOWN & COUNTRY*
I've owned my 2014 Chrysler Town & Country for 6 years. I don't know why this problem suddenly started. The van has 148,000 miles on it. I wasn't sure if this would work since he said 2011-2013 T&C in the video. But another video said 2014 T&C and that guy said to switch the same wires as in this video (7 with 11 and 9 with 16). So we tried it and the 1st difference we discovered was that my van has a wire in spot #11 (in this video there is no wire in 11). The result: when I turn on the right turn signal, nothing blinks, the turn signals stay on without blinking because they behave like fog lights, inside I get the fast clicks. When I turn on the left turn signal, then the fog lights both blink like hazard lights and after 5 clicks go to fast flashing outside in time with the fast clicks inside, the actual turn signal lights stay on like fog lights. We're going to switch the wires back and take it to a dealer to repair. But thanks for the video. It was worth a try.
