    Nice job, Mike. I like the slight distortion as it dried. And many thanks for the Art of Turned Bowls plug.

      Your books are like your kids. All different and hard to say you like one more than another but I would likely not have turned this shape had I not read your book - multiple times.

    Take care my friend

    I'm really enjoying these videos. It is not only instructive to see the different design approaches you are each taking, it is also very interesting to see the different techniques each of you use throughout the turning. My guess is that if each of you were to turn the same design of some object, your techniques would be quite different as well. The distortion from drying really made this piece unique.

    I really like the shape of this bowl. The wide sweep of the rim is beautiful. And the color and figure of the sweet gum is very nice. I watched Sam's entry and his is good too, although very different. Both are very good. Looking forward to seeing the entries of Tamislav and Richard. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

    To all of you;
    Many of us are enthusiastic amateurs who turn as a hobby not for an income. We also have limited resources, eg no vacuum chuck, as professionals you have access to a wide range of gouges and chucks. Would you consider using, say 4 or 6 tools on a future project?

    I enjoyed the video, Mike. I like how you use the profile templates. I recently read "The Art of Turned Bowls" by Richard Raffan, and he suggested creating profile templates. Would you consider creating a video on how you create and use them?

    G’day Mike,
    Wow another completely different design and training video. I’ve been following you for years and love your work and teaching style.
    Great bowl.
    Are the 4 of you planning to have a group discussion on the finished 4 projects. You all must have differing views on design and ways of approaching turning. This critique would be fantastic. I’ve enjoyed all 4 of the turnings
    Thanks

      The point of the 4-Ways videos is show four different approaches to designing and making a given project. I think we've done a reasonably good job regards that, so I'm wondering what more you'd hope to get from a critique.

    Beautiful designed bowl, Mike. I am enjoying watching how all four of you handle the same projects, but differently. Did I see evidence of Ambrosia beetle? Do they attack woods other than maple? We don’t have A.B. on the West Coast.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  Год назад

      I am not sure what causes the uneven color in sweet gum, Valerie. But it is not a beetle as there are none of the characteristic holes.

    I really like that design. I like turning it wet also. I have a question concerning the antique oil. How durable is it when used on bowls that are actually used for food service? TIA

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning

      Probably no better than any hardening oil finish like Mahoneys Walnut Oil Finish.

    Hi Mike, I continue to enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them! A question about the Powermatic lathes .. I have the 3520b, and wonder if you ever slide the headstock back (after removing the tailstock) to make turning the inside of a bowl a little easier on our aging backs --it seems it would be easier that way, because you could stand at the end of the lathe, and not have to lean over the ways. Appreciate any thoughts on this...Thanks!

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  Год назад

      Yes and yes. I sometimes move the HS on larger bowls or when I am hollowing more than one. Works great.

  • @DKWalser

    Mike -- I like the shape of the bowl (and the coloring of that wood is spectacular). It reminds me of my very first bowl. The difference is I ended up with that shape by accident rather than design. I took a 4-hour introduction to woodturning class at the Woodcraft in Tucson and I was paying so much attention on the bevel that I didn't see how get the shape I wanted! I ended up with a nice decorative, but not very functional, bowl.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  Год назад

      Thanks, David. The design is inspired by one in Richard Raffan's book. My first bowl was also a wide rim bowl but it had a knife edge as I got carried away.

    Did you get yourself a 2nd Laguna lathe? I’m thinking about getting an 1836 or 2436 and am wondering how they compare to the One Way and Powermatic lathes.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  Год назад +1

      No, my big lathe is a PM3520 Anniversary model which was painted black. Get the best you can afford. Laguna makes a nice lathe. Is it a Powermatic? No. The Laguna1836 weighs 427 lb compared to more than 700 for my PM. But it costs almost half as much.

  • @kenmore1961
    @kenmore1961 Год назад

    I notice you use that laguna lathe more than the powermatic

    • @DKWalser
      @DKWalser Год назад

      That is his anniversary edition Powermatic 3520C he's using in this video. Both of his lathes are black. The two lathes can be difficult to tell apart. One of the key visual differences is the location of the controls. On the Laguna, the controls are at the top of the headstock. On the PM, the controls are lower down.

    Hi Mike, Another great video. It was interesting to see how the vacuum chuck pulled the water out of the wood. One question. At around 11:00 and later you were using a larger negative rake scraper. What are the top and bottom angles and the included angle? It looked like it did a good job for you. I have watched your videos you did on negative rake scrapers but this grind seemed to look somewhat different, I think. Please advise. Thanks, Myles

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  Год назад

      NRSs have a wid range of acceptable angles. I would shoot for between 50 and 70 degrees included angle. This scraper was so thick as a conventional scraper that I did not want to spend all of that time grinding it to look like skew. the I just took some off the top.
