  • There is a well known secret to hitting consistent green side bunker shots but most instructors don’t include it in their teaching. Well @The Forgotten Golfer has no fear and discusses a key to strong bunker play that Gary Player, Annika Sorenstam, Lydia Ko and Rory Mcllroy (to name a few) already know. And he asks you the beginner or avid golfer to join the party. Take the fear out of your bunker play by using your hands correctly so the club will easily use its bounce and slide through the sand easily for the most successful and controllable bunker shots.

    Many thanks for the tip regarding the grip change. That makes bunker play way easier👍.

    Right on Tony. My old school teacher had us kids rolling are lead wrist rolling the club open and unrolling our
    lead wrist and forearm to square while we rotated our hips though impact. I've always been a good sand player.
    This works on all shots but I don't think this is taught anymore. Thanks for the lesson. I sill use my Ben Hogan
    copper Sandy Andy.

    Actually, I have heard this once before. Henrik Stenson was on the Golf Channel on an instructional show with either Michael Breed or Martin Hall. I cannot remember which it was. Stenson explained that you have to imagine that there is a scoop of sand on the face of your wedge at setup. When you take the club back, cup your left wrist so that sand would stay on the face as long as possible. "Lose the sand, lose the bounce."

      Wow that’s very cool. From my experience very few folks talk about it.

    Cupping the lead wrist allows you to slap the back of the club face, yes, back of face into the sand behind the ball on normal sand shots.

    Tony, Thanks for telling us about your bunker play secret. Would you alter your method if the green side bunker had a hard surface such as wet sand, packed down sand, or a little amount of sand?

    • @TheForgottenGolfer

      I think it will help a lot of people. BTW that practice bunker was full of rocks… But you got the point of it…

    • @TheForgottenGolfer
      @TheForgottenGolfer  Год назад +3

      It’s much harder to use the bounce of your sand wedge when the trap is hard or the sand is packed (like from rain). It’s better to play the ball back further in your stance and only slightly open the club face-almost square.

    Thanks Tony...always appreciate your vids! When people say "cupping", is that just letting the wrists fully break at the top of your back swing?

    • @TheForgottenGolfer
      @TheForgottenGolfer  Год назад +1

      No - cupping means your wrist and your hand are not flat together- there is a curve between the top of your hand and wrist - if you hold your left hand out it’s bent to the left of your wrist- check out Freddie Couples chipping on RUclips- he explains it

    Tony, does it matter where the ball is in your stance? Hard to tell with the camera angle but your hands looked ahead of the ball at address. The whole swing looks light and relaxed and I’ll try it tomorrow.

    • @TheForgottenGolfer
      @TheForgottenGolfer  Год назад

      Towards the front - this trap had very little sand so the ball was played slightly more back than usual

  • @edogaktop

    Is it the same technique for harder/wet sand as well or is this only for fluffy bunkers? Thanks

    • @TheForgottenGolfer

      Face more open -- fluffy Face not open - wet heavy

    Could the same not be achieved by opening the face at address (grip)? Changing the wrist flexion seems like it would be more difficult for most amateurs. Then if they take that cupped wrist into their full swing? Bye bye

    • @TheForgottenGolfer
      @TheForgottenGolfer  Год назад

      You’re right-I want my viewers to try it several ways-Gary Player (the best trap player) first makes his left hand much stronger. Freddie Couples actually makes his left hand weaker before cupping. There are always many roads to Rome. For many this will be a game changer

    • @TheForgottenGolfer
      @TheForgottenGolfer  Год назад

      I always opened my club face, but like many players wasn’t cupping the wrist--I thought I’d shank it if I cupped it.

    • @TheForgottenGolfer
      @TheForgottenGolfer  Год назад +1

      I’ve just read a book by Daniel Grieve (3 releases) he stresses that the full swing and the chipping game are two different games. You’re right keeping a cupped wrist in your full swing sure wouldn’t be pretty, although I do use a slightly cupped wrist to achieve a nice little fade when I need one.
