Nah. The real reason isn't even mentioned here. What is it? Economy of scale. In order to make these, the manufacturer must maintain a special production line with special equipment and specially trained personal all to produce a very low volume item. So your break even point is (upfront investment + overhead) / units produced. Dad had some 17-18yr old 33x12.50 Khumos for awhile they had some minor dry rot but they worked well. Replaced a little before the tread wore out to “be safe” though.
About 3 years ago I work at a Honda dealership as an alignment tech (later moved up to a PDI tech before moving onto another job). I remember anytime a main tech would bring over a 2010ish looking Odyssey, I knew they did the PAX wheels and I knew I was in for fun time. The sensors used for alignments usually just connect right at the edge of the wheel where the wheel met tire. Not on a PAX tire. The sidewall stuck out so there was no space to stick the sensors. So we had to get these huge clamps and clamp down in the tire tread and then connect the sensors to those, and the thread connector usually wasn't as firm as the wheel connector, mostly because if you went too tight you'd puncture the tire. The rest was smooth sailing. I remember those tires costing like $350 a piece too.
Not only that, but I'm sure that, if you want them to be properly mounted and balanced, you take that thing to Bugatti, and not your local Mom-and-Pop tire shop.

I worked at a Nissan dealer and we recommended replacing wheels and tires to customers when they wore out.. why they thought putting them on a mini-van was a good idea was always a head scratcher to me. Yeah they might be safer but the cost wasn't worth it!
@@LS__812 "It might be safer" explains it all. What salesman wouldn't push the super safe minivan to every soccer mom who comes in? Of course the expense gets left out but its soooooo safe!
@@dorianbrecevic4818 you don't really know how drifting is done, do you? You put slippier tires on the back, because you don't really want all the grip in the world in them when you are going drifting
As the velocity goes up, since it’s squared in the force equation, once speeds get really high it becomes much harder and harder to make a tire to cope with the forces. Still 42k for a set of tires is gonna be a markup since there’s no way that the materials cost that much.
It's more the time they spent developing it and making specific moulds and compounds that require their own machines in order to cater to very few people. There's a lot more than raw material costs, especially with something like this
If I remember correctly, one of the other reasons for needing specific tires and a specially trained tech is the actual tire / wheel size. The wheels are 20.47" (f) and 21.26" (r), and the tires themselves are slightly smaller in diameter (no, not like ugly stretched "stance" tires are). This, coupled with the glue, also allows for the heat to expand the tire without debeading itself under the enormous pressure of top speed. Regardless, $42k for a set of tires is crazy. However, if you figure numbers a bit, putting $42k worth of tires on a Veyron is about the equivalent of putting a set of $400 tires on your run of the mill Honda Accord. ($2mil car, $42k tires... $20k car, $400 tires).

I own a Audi TT back in the day with a set of bald Micheals with unknown miles and they where the best tires ever. Those thinks where amazing in the snow. When I finial took the off the rims I was able to fold the tire in half. Best tires ever
In a way, yes, but it really isn't that simple. They're that expensive because of how much money Michelin spent on R&D, and making manufacturing changes to produce them. And when you spend a lot of money upfront to develop a product only 20 people will buy each year, you have to charge more to make the investment worth it. It's such a high markup because of both the huge upfront cost and the fact that these babies will only go on a car almost no one has. Think of it this way, you live on a small island with about 40 other people, and a restaurant association asks you to start selling McDonald's food. First you have to spend time and money researching everything, then spend money building a restaurant, and pay employees. In the end, you invested $2 million in your restaurant. How long would it take for you to earn that $2 million back selling 2 for $3 McDoubles to 40 people who only eat there once every 18 months (don't ask why the people are required to eat there at least once every 18 months because I haven't worked out that part of this analogy)? Probably not in your lifetime. So, that 2 for $3 McDouble deal becomes 2 for $100, because you have bills to pay.
@@CosmicCammEven at $42,000 per set, I think that Michellin is still losing money on these tires. I never saw a Bugatti with more than 10,000 miles on it for sale. In fact the highest mileage Bugatti that is owned by a customer has only 27,000 miles. Bugatti's own test car only has 47,000 miles. I doubt that most Bugatti's had ever swapped its tires. However, even while losing money on these tires, you need to factor in the trickle down effect, of Michellin's R&D. The R&D done on these 300mph+ tires will probably allow it to make better tires in the future for mass market supercars. It's also a marketing tactic, Michellin gets the prestige of making tire capable of 300mph, and costs $10,000 per tire. It's literally free marketing for the brand when people report on their insane tire price.
@@seanl764 that's a good point, I'm sure they can recoup some of that R&D cost by incorporating some of that tech into other tires. But definitely not turning a profit yet.
I tend to buy new tires a lot just to change up the look of my ride. Plus summer and winter are the extreme opposite where I live and it’s nice to have the best tire for the different terrain.
My friend had a nail blowout his tyre on the highway doing 70mph a few weeks back in his 2017 Audi A4 Avant. He heard a noise and said "I think I've got a flat". I insisted he did not because the ride was still comfortable and relatively noiseless. He decided to slow down and pull over to have a look and be safe, the moment he dropped below 40mph, the tyre started making the usual flat tyre sounds and the ride got a little bumpy. Safe to say the run flats he had on (not sure what brand) kinda saved the day because that could have ended a lot worse very quickly. I know what I'm investing in when my tyres need replacing!
I went for 2 years without changing my winter tires. Drove them in the summer and in the winter. Finally replaced them with two second hand winter tires on the front of the car and two summer tires in the back. The driver side rear tire was so worn out that I could see the metal part of the it.
I remember when Top Gear tested the Veyron and said "The tires will explode after 15 minutes at this speed, but don't worry, it'll run out of gas in 6." (Something like that). That car is so insane.

Regular rich dude: I got 5 rolexes
Rich car dudes: I have 2 sets of tires
So that’s why all Honda Odyssey have ugly wheels on them , so they don’t have to replace that tire lmao
My dad has one and the wheels r all scratched up
the time at which you comment on a video does not matter

me a day after putting $42k tires on: Drift day?
well, DDE did it, so i don't see why not.
I feel like tires speficially designed to grip as well as possible would prevent you from actually drifting.
@@FUNKOfilms then why do drivers spin off..... its the same with drifting.. its just that drfting is controling that spin, that prety clear lol
@@dorianbrecevic4818 you don't really know how drifting is done, do you? You put slippier tires on the back, because you don't really want all the grip in the world in them when you are going drifting
@@dimitrijekrstic7567 yeah i know but shitty drivers will just spinn out of the drift...
There's a lot more than raw material costs, especially with something like this
Is that including core discount? If not I'd like my tires back to stack in the garage.
I should be in a zoom meeting but this is more important

@@kilmency2187 He is talking about horses maybe? Being the show is about horsepower.
Lmfao, he is referring to the comment made about the Veyron's being 14.4 inches wide and the widest on any production vehicle's EVER! MO' RUBBA BABY!!
Title: These tires cost $42,000

James Dad I been asking for over 2yr look up the 4Runner video
Lincoln
Abarth
Hudson Hornet
You said going up to speed on your dad 😂
I asked for up to speed on mitsuoka, but they never did it
James: “My car, HiCar, gets expensive parts, while Nolan’s car gets cheap ebay parts”
Nolan under his breath: “James I don’t think this one is really fair”
James: “listen to your father!”
James: “I get these 42,000 dollar set of tires! While Nolan gets this $600 set of tires”
Nolan: “😐”
I feel like on a 350z, a set of 595rsrr's would be better than what is effectively a special performance all season.
It funny how this vid was made 3 weeks after TheStradman got his veyron
Literally thinking the same thing 😂😂
That’s marketing for you
Stradman got a Veyron? How much did he pay lol
Tbh, Mich. tires are 100% worth it. Idk about the $42,000, but their sport 3 and 4 are fantastic tires. Yokahamas are generally well priced aswell.
This is amazing and informative. I was wondering about the tires for this car and now I know. I will never be complaining about tire prices again. (:
Day 119 of asking Donut to do an Up To Speed on Le Mans/WEC
Love from INDIA ❤️
Donut Media: *uploads new content*
Me: *auto like before watching*
I am a Tire Sales/Technician, and this was very satisfying to watch
I don’t replace my tires till the tread is... wires
Is it safe to go beyond that?
Andrew Denisovich ya you just gotta start trimming the wires the slapping sound gets to be a bit to noisy
Dre Moore By then, wires provide more tread then bald tires. The upswing!
A moment of silence for Garrett Motion Inc you know the guys that make the turbos for most of your cars yeah them they filled for bankruptcy this morning but don't worry plenty of stuuuutuuutuutuuu is still going to be happening

I have installed the pax rings on the Honda odysseys. They are a huge pain in the ass to install and even worse to balance. We would usually rebalance then 2-3 times.
Can we just appreciate how much Jerry has improved since when we first saw him?
True
When some tires cost more than the listings on Wayfair :(
You know, that makes some of those children look like a steal. I could have a set of tires OR a child slave?
Easy choice. With a little set up work I could get that child slave to bring in enough money to pay for themselves and the tires I wanted. Epic win.
Day 1 of asking the Donut Media Crew to bring back Science Garage with Bart as the Host
Yep I'm starting this I will probably skip days or arrive late because im often busy but i'll count the days that I comment
Oh my! another one😂 Well im glad i've seen you day one im supporting this great idea
Day 1 of supporting JDM is life
"The average tire is somewhere around 9.5 inches wide"
I'm here with 175s..
Honda Fit/Jazz?
i'm actually pretty good at changing my car tires, but my motorcycle tires were starting to wear a little thin! Finally replaced those yesterday. Totally felt a difference in handling and performance. Not as afraid to turn haha
When someone says these Bugatti tires are the widest tire ever made, but you know that Interco Thornbirds come in a 17 inch width.
On a production car...
Once he mentioned that he likes raising his eyebrows, I started counting how many times he raised his eyebrows, I lost count.

I own a Audi TT back in the day with a set of bald Micheals with unknown miles and they where the best tires ever. Those thinks where amazing in the snow. When I finial took the off the rims I was able to fold the tire in half. Best tires ever
all the shit Jerry got right away and now the dude is part of the core roster on donut
"Is it just a markup because it's on a Bugatti?"
*Yes*
This is much more interesting than Nolan fanboying tesla
Nolan drives a mustang how is he a Tesla fanboy

Day 65 of asking James to do an uptospeed on himself
This episode was specifically made for strawman lol 😆
"Stawman" lol
Never tought a tire video would be the best I saw today!
"Tire rises in ceter"
WTF is a ceter?
Day 26 of asking James to do an up to speed on his mom
When i started driving my aunts 2002 z3 (years important) for the first time to get it serviced it still had factory tires from 2001 on it.
I went for 2 years without changing my winter tires. Drove them in the summer and in the winter. Finally replaced them with two second hand winter tires on the front of the car and two summer tires in the back. The driver side rear tire was so worn out that I could see the metal part of the it.
Ideal Gas Law P*V/T = P*V/T (Pressure times volume divided by temperature) is why the pressure and air volume increases as temperature increases.
