    Tried this with replacing Liquitex Flow Aid with Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver (hard to find the Liquitex Flow Aid over here) and I think it came out great. 10:1 Distilled Water : Airbrush Flow Improver into the half-and-half mix with matte medium mix and then 60 drops of liquitex carbon black ink for a great heavy black wash.
    It's 14 years late but thanks for this Les, time to get myself more dropper bottles and a notebook for recipes.

    Just put my first batch together and washed 3 Imperial Knights with fantastic success. Thank you so much for the recipe! This is going to save so much in washes leaving more $$$ for more models. Used M. Graham & Co. 4 oz Matte Medium ($5.50), Acrylic Medium's Flow Improver 8 oz ($8), Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay Black India Ink ($5), and a gallon of distilled water ($1). Less than $20 for all and the first item to run out will be the Matte Medium which is good for at least 8 oz of wash thus making the initial purchase weigh in at $2.50 per fluid oz. with additional purchases lowering that price. So much cheaper than buying .4 oz paint pots of wash for $4, at $10 per fluid ounce! I used a 4 oz. empty bottle of Robitussin for storage and measured it out with a 3 tsp medicine measuring cup (6 tsp to the oz.) Thank you again!

    Les, thank you for posting your formula. I have adapted it to a fine art painting application and it is working very well for me. I am a former GW gamer turned full time artist. Your work has allowed me to use these fine washes on a much larger scale, something I have wanted to do for a long time.

    Just made my own and used it right away! Two things to note as of October 2021: Liquitex Flow Aid is now 20:1 instead of 10:1. Also the bottles I got from someone, not sure if they were 2oz bottles. Tried filling one, and since the cap was so thin (I think smaller then Les') and the funnel barely fit in, it didn't go in well. Easy fix: get big enough bottles to put the mix in XD

    I will admit, seeing a all thats happened, I'm glad that this was an outcome. personally i was confused whenever I saw a dark sepia or soft body wash, saying to myself "I wonder what that really is..." it does kind of suck that you lost a product that you were selling, but your outcome was admirable and as one of the many poor wargamers out there, you have my tanks a thousandfold. both for the product info, and for the tutorials. keep on inspireing me and those like me!

    I just want to tell you I did everything you said to do and it turned out Great!!! I'm not a wargamer or whatever. I'm into 1/48 scale model aircraft. I use it for gear bays, struts and cockpits. I was trying everything I could find, then I saw you "how to paint" vids and you impressed me!! Thanks for sharing your expertise.

    @thugarl If you are using Liquitex Matte Medium is should go clear when dry. If not this is the first time ever someone has told me otherwise. To darken red mix brown or purple or maybe even black. test mix colors using just the inks first then when you got what you want you can make a wash batch. Drying Blood wash is 20 drops Flame Red, 5 drops Sepia, 3 drops Black.

    @thugarl Actually, I think a bit of brown in there may help balance the color out to the red you want. Try the Sepia first; if that doesn't work, go for a darker brown. Experiment.
    Definitely stick with the crimson ink though, as it'll dilute no matter what you do and you may as well go with a dark shade.

    @cartilige Flow aid is added to paints for smoother flow over the model. It's a soapy solution designed to break surface tension.

  • @ZeroPointAlpha
    @ZeroPointAlpha 12 лет назад

    I've used India Ink before, it works almost as well, but it doesn't sink quite like the acrylic ink does. I've also had success using heavily watered-down acrylic paint (just thicker than milk consistency before adding to the recipe in the video).

  • @LesterBursleyMiniatures
    @LesterBursleyMiniatures  14 лет назад

    @cartilige It's acrylic medium. Basically pant without pigment added. People normally use it to thin paints without loosing body.

  • @ZeroPointAlpha
    @ZeroPointAlpha 13 лет назад

    Tried this recipe out for myself. Sadly the local Hobby Lobby didn't carry any of the brand of ink you suggest except for in black, so I tried another acrylic brand (Liquitex) and it works just as good. I also tried India ink and it works as well!

  • @LesterBursleyMiniatures
    @LesterBursleyMiniatures  14 лет назад

    @thugarl Red was easy but to darken it you have to add certain amounts of brown and black. The red wash I made has been used in some of the videos. It's called Drying Blood Wash. I'll have the new recipes as well as the new DIRTY WASHES up on the new site or on the DAKKA DAKKA thread for this video.

    Question: Is the the reason you use distilled water to avoid any impurities that tap water might have? Or is there another reason?
    Again, Thanks!

    More matt medium to thicken the mix. More water/mix to thin the mix.

    @thugarl Is the final product dired, pink? Or are you looking at the freshly mixed wash in the bottle? The matte medium is white when wet and white + red = pink. Whatever color you mix before adding medium is what the wash will be when dry. In the bottle Dark Sepia looks like a light purple, but when dry it's the color it should be.

    @Superminyme the pigments in actual paint are too large. You will get a bad grainy effect. Thats why you can't simulate GW Badab Black by watering down black paint. The pigments in ink are 100x smaller.

  • @TheZingbaby
    @TheZingbaby 15 лет назад

    Check out the Liquitex web site dude. The Liquitex Inks are very usable in an airbrush... though you will want to clean up using the Liquitex 'pen cleaner' which is made to wash up inks.

    I add about a teaspoon or more of cheap Matte acrylic paint the thicken mine to taste. To me, how much you add depends on how "dirty" you want the model to turn out. Acrylic paint is a on cheaper than matte medium and the quality doesn't really matter since it is just thickener.

    Les, thanks for the recipies. it took some time to find the ingredients, but i made 2 shades of an umber wash. thankfully, there is a dick blick store in Philly, i'll be going there next time. i bought 2 oz bottles, so the soft wash needed 40 drops and the heavy wash got 80. i know, nothing big, just double up. but thanks again, i'll be making more!

Brush cleaning tips, youbetcha. now washes. awesome. does this effect work the same if I wanted to mimic GW Fleshshade , Coreila greenshade and the likes with similar colored inks and if so how many drops. I've got an old bottle of india ink. it's water soluble but I'm unsure of the specific characteristics. I was hoping to use the india ink instead of artist acrylic but i don't know how it would mix with the medium. However I do occasionally use the india ink mixed with alcohol at about an ounce of 91% iso alcohol and only 2 or 3 drops of india ink. But its still very dark and a waste of alcohol. Any advise would be helpful
