Kit Box ERRORS, a JoHan Surprise and a Golden Commando

  • Just like coins, model kits can sometimes be flawed by unintentional errors. Ever see a “429 Corvette” or a “Dodge 300”? You will here. And while vintage JoHan plastic model car kits are some of the rarest and most valuable, they came in a rainbow of possible colors. Steve opens a rare factory sealed Superbird kit for some rare air, plus a look at Steve’s almost-completed Golden Commandos Plymouth funny car model.

Great episode, Steve. I'm a 66 year old retired police officer and have been a modeler builder since since the early 60's. Currently live in Colorado and we can get pretty cold here in the winter. Have a few hundred (like 700+) models in the basement. Still love building and to it as often as a can. Almost exclusively drag cars from vintage to the present. I also own a 1985 Camaro j/sa drag car and a restored 1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye car, 340 auto, Top Banana yellow black interior. Models keep me occupied and out of the bars and off the streets when it's to cold to work in the garage. Wife of 43 years is okay with it too. After the episode ., I went down to my work room and pulled out a couple of my old 69 Vette coupe kits. Sure enough had one 429 and one 427-fun. Also checked my Jo-Han Superbird kit which I probably haven't opened in almost 40 years and there it was. The most God-awful green plastic imagineable. Oh, well. Thanks for the great channel and keep up the awesome work!!

That defect in the white Charger makes it all the more special!!!!!! I built model cars in the early 60's. We'd put the bodies on 1/24 race track chassis and take them to a local hobby shop that had a huge 8 lane track. Great memories!! Thank you!!!!!!!!

I'm 53 years old and still play with cars and trucks both full size and scale models. One of my current scale projects is Monogram GMC pickup with a snow plow. I bought 2 of them in order to replicate my 1:1 pickup. My truck has an 8' bed but the model has a 6' bed so I need 2 beds and 2 chassis to replicate it. I'm also scratch building a 20' car trailer from metal tubing and sheet stock so that the truck can "pull" the MPC Camaro that I built to replicate my 1:1 drag car.

I am a huge diecast model collector but have no skills or patience to build a model kit. I would love a series where you set up a camera and go through the process of building a model. I look at it as an art form. My thought is like a watchmaker conducts an overhaul video.
I also understand they could be your zen place and if so no need to share.
    Keep up the great content!

I wish I had my all my models from the '70s, still have a couple though. I do have one from '69. Several years ago I found an original IMC Ford GT kit(A Bud Anderson Kit)at a flea market for $3.99(didn't haggle). Someone started to build it, then left it as is for me to find decades later, with instructions and leaflet on the real car!!
Models are just as cool as the real cars!😃👌👍👍

I'm well into my 6th decade and it is a nice blast of nostalgia to see someone still working on plastic car models. I've watched a few episodes of Super Models on Discovery Velocity and I was wondering how often you did full detailing like the Golden Commando kit in this video. It would be great to see a feature video on super detailing. I remember getting my set of 61-80 drill bits and pin vise when I started doing wiring and throttle linkages back at the tail end of the 60's. I still have a few dozen Car Model and Model Car Science magazines from the late 60's that described super detailing.

Hi Steve, I loved those old Johan kits back in the day. They were the only kit manufacturer (I think) to have the guts to put out kits of the Virgil Exner designed Mopars. I think I probably built them all and still have them. The Petty Superbird was also a favorite of mine. I admit I did tense up a bit when you opened that sealed Superbird! I still have my sealed Sox And Martin Superbird. It's 45 years later and I can't bring myself to open it...lol! Oh well, maybe one day. Great video! Thanks for bringing back those memories!

I had a collection of about 500 kits and promos that I acquired while growing up in the ‘60s and ‘70’s. I sold them all in the early ‘90’ for a down payment on a house. I especially liked the JoHan kits and promos of the early ‘60s. I was often frustrated when 2 of the model car companies made kits of the same car that were very different with parts that wouldn’t interchange. You mentioned building a model kit “in white” . I would often assemble a kit as much as I could without glue, decide what I wanted to do, then make the changes before final assembly.

Great video Steve. I was a Monogram guy growing up and nearly all of their kits were molded in color. The worst one was the marble effect white/grey/lt blue that they did for the New Monkey's Fox body Mustang convertible. I actually built that Corvette 429 with a Boss 429 motor back in the day. I was always a 'kit basher' and still have boxes of parts from kits that I built through the 80's and 90's

Yeah man Steve, I feel the same way, model’s are meant to be built, not sit on a shelf in the box never to be built! I don’t care how much I have to pay for a certain kit, I’m going to build it, eventually! I just got that Johan Petty Superbird kit too and I paid about the same price for, 70 bucks, which is pretty much a bargain nowadays, because a lot people ( sellers) will have a big price on almost all of the Johan kits. Which is a daggone shame too bc not everyone has plenty of money to pay outrageous prices for kits. Anyhow, good stuff Steve, keep on keeping on bro! Peace ☮️

Love the tee shirt Steve. At 55 yo I still love model car kits, just wish I had the time to build them.

Norm Nelson fielded refrigerator white Super Birds in the USAC stock car division. No need to paint that kit!

“Model cars are for kids” as I just grabbed an eBay package of a model kit from the porch at age 54. What timing 😀

Don't know if you have one or remember it, but back around 2005 or so, MPC did a Hemi Under Glass that had a '69 on the box, but the kit had a '66 body. Pissed me off way more than opening up a Jo-Han '63 Fury box to find it molded in orange.
On Jo-Han, my prized kit is a '69 Road Runner with the cartoon box art form the magazine ads.

Good stuff Steve! I have a half dozen or so waiting for me to retire so I have some time to build them without feeling any pressure to complete them quickly. Prefer to take my time.

It’s a great hobby to relax and let off some stress. The older 80’s models are my favourite, especially the Hot Rod pro street series.

I had some of those JoHan kits. The '64 Cadillac was molded in a blue, but the DeSoto and Plymouth wagon were white or tan. I think the '68 Chrysler was a brownish color.
    Wish I had them now.

the only thing better than the smell of a model kit is the smell of a new Tamiya R/C kit...
