- Thank you to Tom Oberheim, Marcus Ryle, Dave Smith, Tony Karavidas and everyone at Sequential for making this beautiful dream synth.
This was a preproduction unit (hence the tiny knobs) - the production units have the traditional big Oberheim knobs.
Finally the kind of demo I’ve been waiting to see
Glad you liked it Sean.
Being able to watch these free demos makes it so I don’t have to actually buy one. I love RUclips. Completely cures my Gear Acquisition Syndrome by allowing me to live vicariously through those that spent tons of money on stuff like this so I don’t have to and then justify the purchase when the novelty of the purchase wears off (as it ALWAYS does.) No purchase, no cleaning, no storage, no worrying about it getting stolen or damaged. No depreciation. Win-win.
This may possibly be the greatest poly analog of all time.
I think you may be right James
I don’t know if you’ve still got it, but - everybody focuses on “Jump” because it was #1 on the pop charts, but Eddie’s real OB showcase is “1984”, the intro/title track that comes right before Jump. That would be the best thing to see somebody do on the OB-X8 👍
Every time I hear that Oberheim glissando my brain immediately fills in “This is SCTV!”
Please don‘t apologize for pads!
You're killing it! You know how to do a demo right! Awesome sound choices (classic Oberheim because.... it's an Oberheim :) and great playing! Love the filter sweeps! Really loved Camera Eye!! THANK YOU!! Very appreciated!!
So beautiful! I can’t even find proper words. It has sounds that just let u being mesmerized.. Feels so ‘alive’
@7:59 this convinced me, without a shadow of a doubt, that this new OB-X8 has the Oberheim mojo!
RUSH: "The Camera Eye" from 1981s Moving Pictures
@@MJ-tg6wb
Of course. A classic Oberheim OB-X sound.
Awesome demo! On my OB-6 I use aftertouch to trigger the random oscillator on camera eye. I just don't think I can get quite this good of a sound on my OB-6 in any case though!
This is a true Oberheim 😍 and it's sounding fantastic 💖💖💖
Best ob-x8 demo right from start the filter then van halen jump !
That is all i need to hear to decide i want it.
are you using the vintage knob at all?
it sounds so good! I've ordered one, gonna do a video comparing it to my OB6!
Will be waiting for that one. Interested to see what you can do with the big Obie and what you think of it. I’ve not had my OB-6 very long and I like it a lot.
@@riloh58 i think those earlier Sequential products sound a bit dull compared to these modern vintage reissues. I almost bought an OB6, but got a Moog Matriarch instead, and it sounds much better to my ears because of the way the vcos and voices are implemented even though it is a totally different thing. The problem with most modern analog polys is that they have sounded like something is missing compared to the old ones or compared to how alive a modular synth with vcos and natural drift can sound, this and the P5/10 are one of the only modern ones that seem up to that task, everywhere else it seems like there’s a lot of compromises being made for the price, which is why I think the price on this one is fair, even though I can’f afford currently.
@@NickHchaos - I have a Pro5 rev4 too. It is great. I know there are people saying they don't feel it has the same sonic qualities as originals. I'm not so sure (but there will be some confirmation bias in there). Give them a few years to a decade to fully bed in and "develop" as those caps and other components age, and I think they may well be considered classics like earlier revs. If money was no object I'm pretty sure I'd be all in for an OB-X8 as well. As it is, I also don't have the budget for one at the moment. I also don't really need one either (as much as anyone "needs" a synth).
@@riloh58 The rev 4 sounds astonishing to me. It's amazing, because before this wave of reissues, I remember watching old videos of a Prophet 5 being played from decades ago, having no bones in the matter, and thinking to myself, "wow, that's really a great sound," just like I did when I first heard videos of an original Model D (NOT the Voyager). So the reissue seems to capture that pretty identically as far as I can tell. Sounds excellent.
Simply incredible how rich, lush and full this sounds. Yes, it sounds like a true OB, but just the awesomeness of the pure sound, the oscillators and filters, are inspiring.
This thing sounds so good!!!! I wish I could afford one.
Excellent demo. Excellent demo!!!! This is the best one I've heard of the OB-X8 so far.
I can't believe you played both "Jump" and "1999" and they sound just like the original record. Wow!!!
Thank you!!!
Finally! An OB-X8 demo with the sounds we expected and want to hear. Well done! 🙌
Bravo 👏👏👏
Thanks a lot Paul for your very nice demo of this wonderfull synth!
Well The OB-X8 has been rumored to be what Van Halen used to record Jump in studio, although they upgraded to the OB-Xa for concert purposes.
The first demo that totally convinces me! Thank you
Have drooled and dreamed of this synth since its release. Would love to grab one.
Indeed, the pads are beautiful. Great demo!
Awesome demo, sounds so good on my studio monitors, ending with Camera Eye was sweet. If you consider any requests for future demos, I'd love to hear the bass/low end taken to extremes. You definitely showed some phatness, but I love to hear the power fully unleashed beyond musicality, I'm weird like that; )
I’ve never wanted to be able to afford a piece of gear this much. May need to sell off most of my studio to get one, but man does it sound delicious.
For what it's worth, Behringer are about to start production on their UB-Xa digital clone. I know it won't be the exact same but the sound will be in the right ballpark.
I think most of the UBXA is analog.
@@Observe-n-Learn I'll have to check but I doubt it. It would be amazing if it were at least partly analogue but, as their aim is to make affordable re-creations of classic synths, I don't think that analogue is the right way to go for Behringer.
So of course I just found out that this Oberheim was available. I came to youtube to hear what it sounds like, and here you are playing Prince, Rush, and most surprisingly Black Box. Who the hell even tries to cover Black Box or learn their songs? Dude you are awesome as hell in my book just for playing Black Box! You also got my subscription just because of that. Thank you for making my day.
Good God! Those filters! Yes, and then yes some more!
It sounds awesome, but I'll definitely need to play it for myself! I feel like I can get a lot of similar sounds from my JP-8, but yet there's still something distinct and amazing about this new beast.
Hey Paul ... just seen and heard. Well seems I have no choice to buy this synth for my next 2023 album (this years album is already mastered). Great Demo, stunning sounds, made by the right people and fantastic presets...thought I heard and had it all but...what a dreamsynth for analog freaks.
Thanks so much Chris! I am getting one too. Here’s another demo ruclips.net/video/fINfcawRYE0/видео.html
Sounds fantastic, loving the stereo spread
Thank you for including, among all the Prince nuggets, the title cut from *1999* AAAAAND one of the tunes ir clearly inspired, "Dancing in the Sheets" by Shalamar. Won't either complain that you included both songs called "Jump" and one of my favorite Styx tunes.
WOW, thats the best Demo out there, Thanx.
3m01 omg that thickness !
Superb demo, absolutely incredible sounding synth. Totally hits the spot, they nailed it 100%. I’m in !
Lol! Man I knew the Rush nuts were drooling at the "Camera Eye" demo. And being a Rush fan, I certainly didn't mind it either.
Man, there is just so much about this that all my VA clones, hardware and software, just don't quite get. Other than the heft-factor, it's that filter, especially at a really high resonance setting. I've made the 1984 patch dozens of times with all sorts of synths, but have never been 100% satisfied, but I can hear the missing link in these demos. Can't wait to try one someday.
OP-X PRO II will nail almost 100% of this, it's super close to the real deal and probsbly yhe best sounding VA I have ever heard. Super dynamic and has some per voice tuning features that make sure each voice is just a hair off in calibration. But I do get what you are saying. It's got a livelyness to it that you don't get with a VA. Makes me want to buy that new OB that Oberheim are making
@@lobmo Thanks. I might just have to check it out. I have Diva, with OB-8 presets, Obsession, and the Arturia OP-Xa. I just can't get enough of that sound, haha.
8:12 you can tell this is the synth used at in Dancing in Heaven by Q-Feel
Does it have semitone transpose? Whats about reverb?
Has such a beautiful sizzle!
What a privilege, Thanks!
Which part? :)
Exactly the Demo I was waiting on. Perfect!
When I heard Controversy by Prince, I was sold.
Human League - seconds
Great Demo! thanks for this :) I have one on preorder hopefully mid July arrival!
Great demo. The best analog sounding machine.
I'm the 10,000 th viewer, just saying :-) .... So in love with these sounds. This thing is on my buying list!
0:51 that song was at Cool As Ice movie 🎥 🍿 with vanilla ice !
Hi there , Paul. I have a question about another matter . You made a (incredible) bank for analog labv.
I' d like you help me because when I run ChantsMag1 Seq1 first time, it sound perfect, but now (always on Fl Studio), the arpegio doesn't reproduce the same sequence.
I'm very grateful if you could help me.
Greetings from Spain . Very, very good and nice job 👍👍👍
Why, what is the patch doing? And what version of Analog Lab are you using?
Make sure the “Movement” knob is set to 0.352 in Analog Lab (Movement is the sequence speed)
Superb demo!
Oh man that Camera Eye sound is so damn cool. Is there a Subdivisions preset on there? I think it was just an OBX preset Geddy used for the recording. Congrats on owning such a badass instrument! Maybe I'll sell a kidney
It's simple to make a subdivisions preset. It would take you less than 2 minutes. Set the pulse width and close the filter about halfway. Quick attack, moderate release. The solo in that song is a minnimoog Model D. The Octaves in the beginning are OB-X, as wells chords throughout.
@@station2station544 Yeah it would be simple enough. I just thought they might include the patch since I read geddy just used a factory preset on the ob-x for that song. Would be a nice nod to an iconic oberheim song :)
So glad to see someone finally play the real OB-X gem in the room "Jump..... For my love" Would, love to see how you programmed that one. :)
And those Rush parts. Esp, Camera Eye. ..SO close!
I think this is the type of demo that most want to hear. Now do it again, with a good stereo delay, chorus, and reverb ;-)
Yes, Sir! ;-)
I’d prefer to hear the raw unprocessed sound as much as possible. Thank you for the demo Paul.
It doesn't need chorus. There's already reverb and delay on there.. :)
5:57 Shalamar “Dancing in the Sheets”🤘
My type of sounds!! So i know it can do it... Thank you.. Not that i will use it but I know I can!
Thanks for showing off its low end n bass.
Thanks Paul for another excellent synth demo. So how do you choose between this glorious beast and the P5 Rev 4 if I can only afford one?
I personally would recommend the Prophet if i had to choose one. Satisfaction guaranteed and you will save some $
Prophet 10 rev 4
Nice demo! Thank you :)
I had an OB8 with pan pots inset (factory fit) into one of the end cheeks, I presume this is now in the software?
Have you tried recreating Ian Kewley's ubiquitous Oberheim pad, as heard on several Paul Young records (e.g. Every Time You Go Away)? I can't seem to nail it on the Arturia OB-Xa clone, for some reason.
The pad during the chorus of ETYGA, or the mellower one during the verse?
@@paulschilling2996 The one in the intro, after the aeroplane sample. I have always loved that sound and tried to replicate it on several synths (Kronos, Jupiter-X and Arturia OB-Xa (now renamed OP-Xa)).
@@gcoudert I could probably coax it out of the Arturia, but it is a bit like swimming upstream… with the OB-X8 patches like this just flow out effortlessly. Once I have it in my studio again, this patch will be one of the first I do
Sounds great. Are there any external FX on this demo?
Imagine a big gig. You stand in the audience, it's dark and the show is about to start. Suddenly flashing lights and the sounds of 7:28 appear.
Yes, but can we afford the insurance to take a $5.5k synth to a gig? ;)
@@decimal1815 I guess I could afford a sample pack.
I know… I was debating whether to keep that seagull sound in the demo 😂
Well…It’s at the top of my WANT list!!!
Same here…it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.
best out there by far - nice work
My favorite demo so far! Love J3po too, but his keyboard skills are so beyond mine it’s hard to picture myself getting those same sounds. Your demo basically shows exactly how I would be using this synth if I had it, thanks for the vid!
my wallet is deeply scared now
Love this machine.
Here’s hoping they remake the Xpander.
Camera Eye!
0:52 which song?
What’s the song at 1:12? 😄
What's the name of the song from what he's playing at 0:52?
Everybody Everybody by Black Box
@@paulschilling2996 Thanks Paul! I was looking for that song for about a year and a half when I accidentally stumbled on playing the progression. Couldn't remember the name to save my life. I even tried to sing it on the Shazam app saying "owww..." and nothing came up. Guess my oooowww's weren't convincing enough. Lol.

Whats up with the weird knobs on this?
This was a preproduction unit - the production units have the traditional big Oberheim knobs. :)
Is the keyboard action like the original OB-X, OB-Xa, OB-8, Matrix-12 or more like Moog One? I am asking, because I am planning to order one before I'll have a chance to ever see it at a music store to try it out.
It’s the same Fatar keybed used in the Prophet 5 Rev4, among others.
@@JimDaneker I see. Well... It's certainly better than the rather unconventional Moog One keybed, which to me personally, is a big Moog One's drawback. These keys seem to have been made more for a carpenter than a keyboard player. The Memorymoog was so much nicer than the Moog One. If Moog reissued the Memorymoog, just like they reissued the Model-D, I mean, the Memorymoog could give both Sequential and Oberheim a better competition.
@@dvamateur yeah, I’ve grown to like the Fatar keybed Sequential uses. And oh my word yes - if Moog reissued the Memorymoog, it would shake the foundations of the synth world 😁
@@JimDaneker Perhaps, yes, it would, until Elka reissued the Synthex and Oberheim reissued the Matrix12. :)
r u a Prince fan?
I admire him greatly.
does anybody has detail about the midi implementaiton, or has a link to a manual of the synth ?
ETERNAL AESTHETIC
That's my bank account wiped out again!! ;)
Can someone tell if Subdivisions - Rush has been played on one of these yet 😍
I did a Subdivisions patch, but if you listen to the original, I think they have chorus FX on it, and recorded the octave bass and chord parts separately (with different levels of reverb etc.)...and since people would expect the OB-X8 patch to sound the same, I thought it's better to leave it off the demo. I could of course replicate how the original was recorded, but then people would probably complain about too many FX :)
@@paulschilling2996 I was thinking he maybe had a split going originally? In the video he's playing it all on the Oberheim, except for the Moog leads. I do the bass on my OB-6 and the upper chords and leads on my Rev2.
@@paulschilling2996 Subdivisions was done on the OB-X and Moog taurus 1 pedals at the same time. The upper chords were a mix of OB-X and JP-8.
@@paulschilling2996 Yep, there are several tracks and atleast one mystery effect that comes in twice (I'd love to ID this effect some day - isolated it sounds like a phaser, but in the full mix it sounds choir-like). On the original OB-X, the opening notes need to be done with a unison square wave bass patch to sound like the record. Trying to play it using octaves of the main chord patch (as he does in the music video) won't have the same sound or beefiness.
Paul, as usual, you do NOT disappoint! Thank you for yet another great demo. I sure cannot wait to receive mine in the first batch that goes out in either June or July........hopefully June.
Wow great synth... is the signal dry or is it going through an external effects processor?
It is dry except for a bit of reverb. No EQ or other mastering.
Heres a tip: try it with a strymon big sky which I own
Love how you played the "other" Jump as well. Might that also actually have been played on an Oberheim originally?
Yes! Pointer Sisters’ Jump (For my Love) is pretty much all OB-8 and DMX drum machine. Of course they did some fancy EQ/mastering on the track so it sounds better. I didn’t do any EQ/mastering on my demo
Yeah its the one sound I never could get right on OP-X PRO II. This thing nails it with ease. I'm really debating selling some gear to but one too.
@@lorenmorgan1931 Totall Agree re: OP-XII. While it is the BEST software emulation (hand down) of this classic synth, you never can get this sound just right. That said, my OB-6 does just fine. Waiting for the OB-6 / OB-X8 Comparisons. That will influence whether I sell 1/2 my studio for the Oberheim future classic.
@@N-trepid1 Yea, I can get any sound nailed on it, but this one, something about the speed of the attack it can't get right, or maybe the its the attack and the extra dynamics and harmonics of the real deal. I will try to program it out on OP again, but that one thing alone makes me want to get either this or at least the Behringer clone when it comes out. The price tag on this one is steep, although it really sounds like its probably the best analog synth ever made and probably worth every penny. :)
@@paulschilling2996 you sure?? Most of those songs are loaded with Prophet-5.
Can someone do a shoot out comparison between the OB-X8 and the Behringer UB-XA? I wonder which one sounds better.
The first impression is that the OB-X8 sounds much better and much closer to the original OB-X and OB-Xa then the UB-XA does. Andertons demo certainly didn't do the UB-XA any favors. But we still need to get some proper UB-XA demoes before we can really make any conclusions.
@@MacXpert74 I don't get that impression. Did you hear The Synth King's older demo? ruclips.net/video/NfCjPOsqsb4/видео.html
This sounds nice. I think it could go either way. You get 16 voices with the Behringer so you can make bigger unisons, or use 4 oscillators per voice with 8 voices. Also there's so many possibilities for different colors with the Behringer's different vintage modes. And the Behringer has polyphonic aftertouch and MPE support so it's inherently more expressive than the OB-X8, you can control per-voice filter cutoff for example. Or this could be hooked up to a Roli Seaboard, which would be useless with the OB-X8. Both synths are using some surface mount components. I don't believe there's anything extra special in the build of the OB-X8 and I think both synths are equally complex internally. For the price of the OB-X8, you can buy 3 of the UB-XA's and still have 500 bux left over, so you could do things like duplicate patches and pan one synth hard left and the other hard right for a binaural effect without a chorus. Can 3 UB-XA's being sequenced to play a realtime MPE composition sound better than the one OB-X8? Maybe. The song could certainly have a more complex instrumentation. Remember that for the price of the OB-X8 with its 8 voices, you get 48 voices of Behringer. I think it's quite possible that both synths sound equally as good, and the jury is not out because nobody has compared them.
@@zyxyuv1650 Yeah I heard that one too. It certainly sounds much better there. But this was a very 'produced' demo with many synth layers multi-tracked and with full production. Most synths will sound at least decent when used in such a way. But having said that, it does appear as if Andertons did something wrong with their recording to make it sound as weak as it did there. What we really need is a better demo with it's raw sound recorded well.
@@zyxyuv1650 On paper the UB-XA is certainly promising. But if its raw sound is a disappointment, it doesn't really matter how many features it's got. Also I would just use multi-tracking if I need multiple OB-X8 parts in a production. No need for more than one synth for this. But I reserve a final judgement until we see more proper demoes of the UB-XA. The OB-X8 does at least sound very good, but is indeed also very expensive.
What I really like to hear is an UB-XA raw synth demo that sounds as good as this OB-X8 demo:
ruclips.net/video/5dH_U09NLVI/видео.html&ab_channel=OberheimOfficial
Then I would be convinced it's good.
I have been a bit suspicious about this synth. Earlier videos has not been convincing, especially when compared to videos with the old ob8. This demo makes me much more motivated to buy one.
Sounds killer!
God I wish I could afford one of these! 😵
Finally
It's good we all hear different things in a sound, otherwise the music game would become boring quickly, I guess.
Anyone know if these are gonna be limited runs?? It'll take me till Fall to get myself one 😭
Not limited - they’ll be made through Sequential like the Prophet-5 rev4
@@paulschilling2996 Nice! thanks for the info! I was afraid this may have been one of those things some synth companies do. Well, glad it's not! Let's Go!! 🔥🔥🔥
Sick playing btw! Soon as I heard that first patch. I already know I have to get it. Perfect for making scores 😎
DAMN!
Fantastic demo/overview. It is great this product exist. Not to be grim faced and forbidding (wow, sorry...), but were I writing a check in this price range for an analog poly Studio Electronics would would be on the pay to the order of line and the description would be CODE. Those seriously entertaining this or a rev. 4 owe themselves a hard look at it before pulling the trigger IMHO. (Too bad Moog buggered the tracking/tuning on One and then made it worse with 1.4)
Hi Kevin! I'm evaluating features and following the evolution of the Moog One, also.
- The Oscillator Compensation, wasn't solved with the Firmware 1.4 update?
- How did tracking get worse?
I'll appreciate your comments.
(BTW, I've had an SE Omega8 for several years ;)
@@GDFourcade1 Apologies for the statement ambiguity - I meant the overall synth is worse with 1.4 firmware. Constantly varying degrees of phase cancellation is often desirable. This firmware randomly locks this such that oscillators can be (and occasionally are) locked up to 180 degrees out of phase! Watch the Tim Shoebridge video for details - this took the One off even my stretch wish list until/if fixed. Even if it is fixed that kind of coin would definitely go for a CODE before anything else currently/soon available. Too bad Roland is busy fleecing folks for their portable VST players instead of teaming for an SE-08 (CODE) keyboard with poly aftertouch. Odd behavior given the customer respect shown with SP-404MKII pricing & features.
@@klstay Grateful for the explanation on phase cancellation on the Moog One.
I also agree with you on Roland's mistaken policy of not emphasizing the SE-02 (by far the most "real" of his boutique products) and not joining forces in a SE-08 with polyaftertouch, a sure winner.
But SE has stopped building, updating, etc. Those products years ago. I heard reports of various bugs, and it’s a lot to pay for a rarified boutique product with unknown level of support.
@@NickHchaos both the Code and Omega units are being built, sold, and well supported today. It is relatively pricey, but if the sound is top priority when spending this kind of coin there is a reason these continue to be found in so many recording studios and producers kits. SE gear is a not very well kept secret in those circles.
