The odd thing here is that I didn't really notice the difference going from the DI sound to the Bantamp, but as soon as it switched back there was that instant impression of 'it's missing something'.
This is a great demo for this amp and an ingenious way to record both tones examples at one time and ping-pong them within the course of a single run demo. This thing kicks ass!
This is a separate question for you. I watch you as well as Trogley and his long haired compatriot but I also look at other you tubers that actually build. My question for you is there any videos you did that covers grain fill and how to make that pop on a maple top whether it's spalted quilted or birdseye. I like to watch you because you tend to get to the subject at hand quicker than some of the others.
Great video! Subscribed! Just a question, I ordered mine and I will be receiving it today. I was thinking to connect the head to an Orange Crush 50 combo amp via the effects send from the Joyo to the effects return of the Orange. Why did you connected the Joyo via the headphone jack and not the effects send? I know you build yourself guitars, cabinets, etc. You know more than me, that's a fact, I want to understand why (and yes, I will connect via headphones, but If you could please explain I would be very grateful). Thanks!! Cheers from Argentina!
Connected the badass via effects send to my scarlet 2i2. there was a high pitch chirping noise. Then I connected via headphone jack, no noise. In the case of my copy of the amp it's much better through the headphone jack
Bit late now, but I have the Jackman (JCM 800 clone) and I run that out the fx loop into my orange crush bass 50 for a Lemmy style marshall distortion tone for my bass. It works an absolute treat
But what is the Dan Thompson way of using it? Also I think the Headphone output probably will have an IR/speaker emulation on it to not sound so harsh, right? So, if that would be the case, and you want the untainted preamp experience, you would have to use the FX loop out into the interface. With that it would be interesting to see where in the line the compression and gain sit (before or after the FX loop).
I've been trying to convince fellow low enders how amazing this little beauty is. I haven't gigged it but I have rehearsed with it with a full band with two 8ohm cabs and it astonished me! It's an amazing little piece of kit.
Great review and great playing, impressive! I want to be sure that the head was not connected to a cabinet (or load) on your review, wasn't it? Let me rephrase the question: Will it work without a cabinet or it has to to be connected to one?
It actually can keep up with a band if the venue has a PA to hook into by using either : A.) A passthru DI box in the FX loop so you can use the amp and whatever cab you have as a monitor on stage, and send to FOH, or use the DI box to patch into a larger XLR input power amp B.) a DI plugged with a cable coming straight out of the headphone jack to go straight to FOH or a larger power amp on stage. C.) Likewise, you can get a small PA setup for reinforcement/monitoring, and if you have enough inputs, you can run 2 guitars and a bass with vox, and then send that to FOH anyway. That last option also allows you to even play gigs with no PA, since at that point you have your own, or if you can do house parties/concerts in your local park/private bookings, if that's your thing.
Great review .... as you say, I've seen mixed reviews on the Joyo Badass, but having it demonstrated with an actual bass guitarvreally helps. It's now on the "things to buy" list :) Slight aside, you do some pretty cool riffs in your demos ... any chance you could transcribe some ?
Great review Dan! I agree I think a XLR would make a lot more sense! Hopefully one day I can order a bass from you! Especially with that one sik headstock you make where the tuners are inside the headstock!
So, I've been using my Wangs VT-10 guitar combo/amp to practice my Bass playing at home, and then playing along with a friend of mine on Twitch. Surprisingly the little Wangs sounds really good with either my Guitar (Hagstrom Swede P-90's) and my Bass (Orange O-Bass). I want to build a dual 10" isobaric cabinet (Similar to the Orange cabs but without the cost) and I'm wondering will this little Joyo Badass "Demon" drive the cab sufficiently for home practice and even some garage style fun with friends? I know you should always double the power of the bass to the guitars because bass frequency is low and the disperses faster than higher frequencies, in fact a friend likes using my little VT-10 when we get together and I use an old Crate Bass combo/amp I have kicking around, but in my opinion the tubes in the Wangs sound so good on either Bass or Guitar that I want a tube head for my next amp. Would you recommend this for my application and needs?
Thanks for sharing, checked out a couple of other videos on this little bad boy. I just purchased a Focusrite scarlet solo. I mainly got that for audio interface for bass lessons via zoom. Im thinking of maybe plugging my bass into this and then out to the instrument input on the focusrite for my lessons maybe. May give my spector bass some kick. Could probably use for headphone practice or tiny gigs when I get good enough. LOL Peace bro that was awesome.
@@bassimprovjams3772 I've just finished my last kit (a StewMac body built acoustic. Maybe in the new few weeks I'll get started on the bass. I actually do have a kit ready to go.
@@MrDaveKC awesome man!!! There’s some great kits out there! Low end lobster has done a few great kits for us he did a beautiful Fender Pbass! Probably the nicest P I have ever seen IMO hope it turns out killer !!
Is the tube actually being used as a tube? The original single channel Bantamps used a starved plate design and the tubes were just lit up with an LED so you could power the entire thing with a battery but this looks like it needs much more power to work.
I've got a friend who builds boutique amps and goes by the name Boone Docks amps. I've only heard one since he was in the band but if it's any indication of his work it sounded great. I'm not familiar with BanTamp but if it works. I guess you'd need to have a rig with an E drum setup so your not over powered. Loud drummers and lead guitarist seem to be the biggest issue with bands. Hey are you doing background music for Seinfeld? Lmao.
Awesome demo, Dan. 😎🤘🏻🎸 this amp sounds pretty cool. I do dig the joyo guitar amps like the vivo(which is my most favorite since I’m a Huge peavey guitar amp fan) and the zombie. And I did wonder if they’ll make a bass amp. And it really does deliver some great tones. this is a pretty cool sounding bass amp.
I think the best way to use one of these...is to use 2 of these. Biamp. 2 of these in simulated stereo, with something like the Tech21 DI2112 to split the signal.
I have a 10inch celestion 200w bass cab that i (surprisingly) use as a guitar cab.. will this amp push the bass cab beyond "bedroom levels"?. I'm talking about a coffee shop gig with a controlled drummer
For guitar? Definitely. You’re not using the wattage to push low frequencies like on bass. With bass all the power is sucked into making deep low end frequencies, below 120 hz
look cool , but as you say for gig , will be better serve with tc electronic for compact rig , , i use a small guitar frontman with 2x10 cab to practice bass , and 300w berhinger , and have also a 200w pevey rack amp , to play with band ,
I'm not a bass player. I only play guitar. Maybe my ears aren't all that great anymore from cranking my half stack up but, I really couldn't hear any difference from your "Direct Box" vs the Joyo?? If anything I would say that the Direct Box sounded just as good if not more clear than going through the Joyo but, I can't judge anything without being in the room and hearing what your hearing.
Dan: talks about this not being loud enough to gig with me: hasn't worried about being loud enough for years, in fact you could say I've been gigging... sansamp edit: stays till the end. yeah, lack of XLR kind of is a deal breaker :(
So the right way to use it, is to throw out the window what it's supposed to do, and do something else with it. Mmh. It's a practice amp. That means practicing at home, typically for most of us who can't afford or don't want to turn their place into a studio. Needing an actual amp makes it useless, if that's really what it's all about. If you listen on some high quality headphones you’ll hear a ton more difference. Fat bottom end, warm mid range, and top end bite.
@@GunsandGuitars agreed! Instant difference when it switched. Sounding good, and that bass is no slouch either! Well done!
The crazy thing is that your bass itself is badass adding the Joyo is just a bonus to your bass sound.
This is a great demo for this amp and an ingenious way to record both tones examples at one time and ping-pong them within the course of a single run demo. This thing kicks ass!
I am a few week late seeing this one Dan but loving the bass content. Def added that bass amp to my wish list. Thanks man
Sweet bass, Dan! Excellent work.
That bass guitar is stunning - tone AND looks!

Thanks for your video. So how or what's the best way to run this Joyo BamTamp bass amp as a pre amp into another bass combo amp?
That sounds really good Dan. Now I just need to build a bass, learn to play bass, and get the amp!
Yes to all those things!

Would the way you are recording the bass for this be considered parallel compression?

I prefer the sound of the DI much more! It has more definition and clarity... 😅
