Astigmatism is a common eye condition where the light going through the eye does not focus to a single point on the retina. Astigmatism symptoms often includes blurred, fuzzy or skewed vision. Astigmatism is often caused by a curvature to the cornea - the clear window to the eye.
Not fully described in this short video is how astigmatism can also be caused by the curvature to the lens inside the eye, however, the end result is the same.
For most people astigmatism is not a disease but can progress and change with age. For some unlucky individuals, other eye diseases such as keratoconus can result in extreme levels of astigmatism.
Thankfully, for most cases of astigmatism, people can see very well with eyeglasses, astigmatism correcting contact lenses and refractive surgery such as lasik.

Just got my glasses and astigmatism diagnosed two weeks ago. It's funny because the only issues I usually have was going down the stairs I had a weird vertigo. But it's been forever since I even had an exam done on myself.i shit u not,the moment I sat in that chair and the optometrist had me cover my left eye, Jesus Christ everything was blurry. It was so weird how I hadn't noticed..but I guess with covid and lockdown and being athome nothing to do but a tablet and phone it may have had an impact. I'm kind of weirded out by the fact my eyeball ain't normal. But I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to make my eye stronger again. It's healthy on the inside.i think I fried my eye or something.i know when babies or little kids have issues where on eye is weaker or not as developed the Dr(atleast back when I was young) would cover the good eye so the bad one works. I know it's not related. But aside from laser surgery, is it possible that the eye muscle can be retrained? Seen people all the time come in for the exam, get a new Rx and not wear them often so their eyes don't adjust. I know glasses take the strain off your eyes trying to see and they are able to see clearly. I'm just curious. But worried. I know glasses arnt bad but I'm just concerned I'm damaging my eyes more by wearing glasses.. don't want to be reliant on something, anything..and the things I have to rely on, god I hate when something happens to it.guess I'm not fully sure how to feel about this. I'm 33 and I just remember my mom and dad having to get their glasses when they were around 40 ish ,so a.bit early but I never did win the genetic lottery in the family.

@@amberg4131 I dont think your eyes will get better without surgery, astigmatism I dont think is caused by screens, screens would damage the nerves behind your eye, maybe if ure lucky they will get better, but since ure 33 I dont think they will, eyes start deteriorating around 30 to 40, if ure lucky 50, got my first pair of glasses in 2019 when I was 12, doctor said I shouldve had them at 5 by how bad they were(I only started using the computer at 6 or 7, and my first mobile device at 7 or 8)went in May for my second pair, the eye doctor said mine is definitely astigmatism(cant remember if the whole eye is shaped weirdly or just the cornea), Ive looked up a lot about if it goes away, they say it sometimes goes away by late teenage years, but there isnt a good chance of it, if you dont wanna wear them anymore, you can go for prk(hurts more but doesnt have a flap, also needs month to heal, safer if you are a more sporty person or live around kids that my bump you accidently)LASIK makes a flap and only needs 5 days to heal, doesnt hurt much, smile I think makes the cornea soft, then they move it, laser the eye and then close it again(might be mixing it), you can find some of his videos about them.
Edit: Forgot to add that there is another surgery where they make a small incision on ure eye, they then put a folded contact lense type things in, they unfold when inside, it doesnt last forever but I think its one of the safer less painfull ones.

I used to think everybody saw the world like I did. (Stretched lights, blurry vision etc.) I took an astigmatism test online for fun. It had some lines and I saw some of them... More thick than other lines. I doubted at first. Then I remembered my father and sister both had astigmatism at such high levels. I convinced my mother and we went to the eye doctor. They diagnosed me with myopic and astigmatism (with the rule). I can never forget the moment I first wore my glasses! My jaw dropped! But when I started to use it daily, I got nauseous. (Because of the wobbly objective of the glasses) But I got used to it! Having information about such things can really help out a lot!

There's something I don't understand and I can't find an answer for it.
So I started wearing glasses a year ago and turns out I have both astigmatism and myopia, my left eye is -2.50 and the right eye is -1.50. What confuses me is, my friend who just has myopia and it's only 1.25 in both eyes seems like she struggles way more than me! When she describes it it feels like she has the worst vision ever and she's not the only one, I have met a person who has 1.75 astigmatism and both of them made me feel as if they're going blind even tho my eyesight is worse than them. Tbh if it's not because of the strong headache I wouldn't wear my glasses everyday, i wouldn't never know if it's not because of the comments I heard "are you sure you don't have a problem in your eyes" lol. So what's it? Are they exaggerating or something?

I always wondered, why I had eye pain, dry eyes and felt like I would vomit when I'm wearing my glasses. When I looked around, everything looked so wobbly and I couldn't even wear them for 5 minutes straight.
Now I found out, that I don't have astigmatism but my doctor wrongfully gave me glasses for that. Don't even have the symptoms. The most annoying thing is that I had to suffer like that for 3years till I found that out by myself, and was about to be restricted with these glasses permanently for my driver's license. Honestly at that point, not wearing glasses would be way more safer than letting me drive with these pain causing glasses.

My mom and 2 aunts had it for varied reasons, different years, different doctors, and all three of them regret it, saying their side affects were more bothersome than their original issues. Their experiences definitely made the decision for me not to. You may still choose to go ahead with it, just be informed first so you can feel good about it.

I just got told my astigmatism nearly tripled from -1.25 to -3.00... i've been wearing toric contacts excessively and now veins/vessels are growing to my retina. They told me i HAD to wear glasses now to kill off the veins and drain their blood so they become "ghost vessels" and also to potentially lower my astigmatism because it changed so quickly. Also my righy eye spherical went from -2 to -3 and my left stayed the same at -1.50.
They practically told me i could go blind in a couple of years if i kept going the way i currently did... not gonna lie, i shit myself and i'm more desperate to fix my eyesight than ever. If you guys have any tips or things i could do to help my eyesight improve/restore then please share.

That in itself was a massively life changing opportunity. 55 years later, still wearing what are now gas permeable lenses, I am ever grateful to them and the freedoms they gave me. The (only) cool thing with astigmatism is that if you press your eyeballs through your upper or lower lid it can make things very clear, if you get the right spot. I have awful astigmatism and glasses give me headaches from the pressure on my temples (I have a genetic collagen disorder and it makes my scalp and head very painful) and I can’t wear contacts because they roll up on my eyes in seconds due to dry eye. I mostly just tolerate fuzzy and grey letters and digits and funky lines and patterns.

  • @anarchist_parable
    @anarchist_parable 10 месяцев назад

I got glasses when I was seven and was told to only wear them when I was reading at school. I would try to wear them all the time because they kept me from getting headaches but I would get in trouble. I stopped wearing them at all at 18. Now I'm 32 and just got a new pair of glasses that I was instructed to wear all the time. I can finally see without squinting and getting a headache. I'm so much less light sensitive. It's like seeing in HD it's crazy. I knew I was straining but I thought that I was just working harder to see as well as other people, I didn't know that my vision was blurry I only really noticed with lights. I feel like I wasted half my life just not seeing properly.

Or, AN octopus can be seen intelligent but is still considered a meal as well.

I am 24 years old. At the age of 16, I went to the doctor because my vision was very difficult. I already had the left eye - 5, the right one - 4.. At the age of 20, the minus eye increased - 7, the right eye remained the same. My doctor told me that laser correction would be done. Last year, I went to another clinic where laser is performed. But they told me that the astigmatism is high and laser correction would not be done. I should have phakic lens surgery. But they did not advise me and it is quite expensive. I can see well with glasses. Maybe I should use a normal astigmatic lens. Sometimes a lens, sometimes glasses😢

I have astigmatism in my left eye, but it’s getting way better cuz I’m wearing my glasses, most people always say to me “if you can see without ur glasses, why do you need them?” And I always say, since the other eye doesn’t work so well the ‘main’ eye is focusing the most but when I look at things they just a bit of a blurry edge around them, I hope that helped and questions!

I have a mild astigmatism and I didn't know what it was until my sister started working at specsavers for two years and learnt about it. I was confused and it took a while for me to finally understand what she meant because I searched a RUclips video of astigmatism POV.
I just thought everyone used to see the world like that and I remember seeing lines coming from the lights and rotating my head to turn them and squinting to make them bigger. It was so fun and felt like a superpower. 🙃
It's not really that inconvenience in my lifestyle right now so I'll wait till my next NHS specsavers appointment to get new lenses that correct my astigmatism.
Btw, my family always makes joke about how I'm halfway to being legally blind. I'm -5 in both eyes. 😅

Hello Dr. Allen, thank you for the video! Much appreciated.
I had only nearsightedness in my early teenage years before also developing astigmatism several years later. Though I understand the difference definition-wise between the two, I have always wondered how they're different (or not) in their effect(s).
When I was only nearsighted, far-away things were already blurry or shadowy, so when I also got astigmatism later, I didn't notice any difference except that of course my vision was worse - but my nearsightedness increased too, so 🤷‍♀️.
    My questions, then, are:
    1) Is there any difference between the vision of someone who only has myopia vs one who only has astigmatism?
    2) Having one condition increases the risk for the other, right?
    3) Is it possible to only have one of the two (i.e. never develop the other condition as well)?
    4) Could my astigmatism have been missed when I was first diagnosed with myopia?
I hope you get to this comment, but if not, all good! Thank you!

My optometrist said I have quite mild astigmatism. It’s mild enough that I can get away with regular prescription contacts (clear) still but I noticed when I wear colored contacts on my right eye, it doesn’t point exactly the same direction as my left eye, and makes it difficult to find ones that will sit on my eye correctly the pupil section has to be a little bit more open on the colored contact if that makes sense or it looks cockeyed :( I’ve only found one brand so far that sits right and even (I usually sport my natural anyways, but thought of this, watching this video)
