    Such a moody, dreamy lounge song. One of my very favorites. You think of Mike mainly as "country pop/rock", then he manages to write songs like this and Daily Nightly. Such a talent.

      His best song ever. According to Songfacts he originally wrote and recorded the song as a demo in 1963. The demo version is even more beautiful. If the year is correct then he was using chords that no one was using at the time and though it sounds like Gerry And The Pacemakers a little bit with the chords it was recorded a year before Don't Let the Sun

      I do also have one other thing I have to admit to you; I recorded a small portion of the Reverend Dr. Tony Evans' sermon, he was preaching about patience, commitment and what a real marriage is.

      @@cherylhulting1301 As far as I know none exists. The demo was on youtube about 5 years ago but was removed for copyright reasons. The song is on a Monkees cd called Go Ape which I think was a bootleg but a great cd. It not only includes the demo but other rare songs.

    I think its the best song I've ever heard. It rivals anything that is put out today. The melody alone is worth it. The irony of the lyrics placed in the Monkees in Paris episode with the Monkees having a good time with their on-screen girlfriends. Mike Nesmith is a very gifted songwriter. and that's what I liked about his presence in the group.

      LOVED your comments and thanks for sharing!!! This is my FAVORITE song by Mike and one of my favorite Monkee songs. Mike is supposed to FINALLY play it live in concert on their final tour coming up and too bad that it was not played on their past tours years ago. Better much late than never, I guess. They spent an off day in Chicago during the 1964 Summer Tour filming the famous "Rainbow Room" videos for several of their songs. They probably stayed in that hotel during that time. (Fun Fact: The Rainbow Room would later become the home studio for the Oprah Winfrey Show!)

      The first 2 opening chords are the same with the 2nd chord afterwards being different. Interestingly Mike recorded this song in the form of a demo back in 1963 using the same chords. This predates Gerry And The Pacemakers. I like the demo version much better because it is just him with the guitar along with high reverb in the vocals. Sadly the demo has yet to be legitmately issued. Someone has posted the version previously but it was removed for copyright violations. I am hoping Mike eventually releases all his early recordings. He has quite a few and I am sure all Monkees fans would buy it.

    Dolenz may have been the VOICE of the Monkees but Nesmith was definitely the talent! He started out as Michael Blessing and wrote some great songs including Different Drum that was recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys back in the '60s. Joanne which he recorded on a solo album and many, many more with the Monkees! This was not his best song ever but it gave us a clue to his versatility as a musician and writer. Unfortunately, the most popular Monkee was actually the LEAST talented, Davey Jones. But, hell, he was cute as a bug's ear!

    • @yourekittenme.
      @yourekittenme. 2 года назад +5

      That depends upon how you define talent. During the 60’s, Davy didn’t play an instrument (musical talent) but he had the most theatrical talent (singing, dancing). Peter could play numerous instruments (don’t remember exactly how many). Micky had the comedic chops. IMHO they all had good voices; they ALL had talent, just different types. Let’s face it, we (the fans) got lucky when these 4 lads were chosen!

      @@Voirreydirector Actually Susan, while it's true that Michael loved that country and blues twang, have you ever heard him sing folk music? His vocal tone and styling there can be very sweet. Out here on RUclips you can hear him sing folk songs in some concert excerpts from San Antonio in 1963. His voice can be quite delicate. He again crooned his way through a cover of Buffy Saint Marie's "Until It's Time for You to Go," which is even prettier than "Don't Call on Me." You can hear that out here too. It's funny to hear him absolutely belt his way through his cover of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?" and then hear this material. He's more versatile as a vocalist than I think people might be aware.
