- What Does the Chi Rho Symbol Mean?
One of the most common Christian symbols in Catholic churches and artwork is the monogram Chi Rho (XP). Chi (χ)and Rho (ρ) are the first two letters of Christ in Greek (ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ). Therefore, the Chi Rho symbol means Christ. Also, combining the two letters into one gives the symbol a shape similar to the cross.
The popularity of Chi Rho Christogram symbol can be traced back to the conversion of the Emperor Constantine. In AD 312 Constantine witnessed a vision of this symbol in the sky during the Battle of Milvian Bridge with the words "in hoc singo vinces" (in this sign, you will conquer). He interpreted this to mean that God would protect them in battle. He had all of the Roman soldiers paint the symbol on their shields for the battle and they were victorious. Thereafter, the Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity and brought the religion into the mainstream of the Roman Empire.
The Chi Rho symbol is also found on the Labarum, which was the imperial standard of Constantine and later Roman emperors.

You're the first Greek I've seen claiming that the 'Byzantine' Empire was not Roman. It was the surviving Eastern part that adopted Christianity while becoming increasingly Hellenic as opposed to Latin. It was still the Roman Empire, it had just evolved.
You are right that it was an Eastern Orthodox symbol before any other significant sect of Christianity even existed.
I know to what he said might sound contradictory because Byzantine is Roman. I am Orthodox and although I’m not Greek, I belong to a Greek Orthodox Church. When he is saying Byzantine vs Roman, he is really saying East vs West in the Roman Empire. When the Bishop (the Pope) of the city of Rome and the west separated from the Church, they renamed their new church and religion, Holy Roman Catholic Church, taking “Catholic” from the Constantinople-Nicene Creed. In the west everyone and themselves will say “Catholic”, but a Orthodox Christian will call them “Roman Catholic” because the Holy Orthodox Church is “the ONE holy catholic and apostolic Church”, and Rome or the west is considered heretical and non-catholic church. In my circle, I say the Latin church. Orthodox Christians from different jurisdictions all over the world and even Orthodox Christians who are Latin, will know I’m not talking talking about them as Latins, but the Roman Catholics and Protestants or the West. Heredox Christians would think I’m talking about an ethnic people instead of an religious group. Funny tid bit of history, if you went back to the Byzantine times and asked them what they are, they would say they are Roman Citizens, although we call Byzantine later on.

There’s this confusion between two very similar words.
Ρωμαίος / Romèos > Roman
Ρωμιός / romiòs > Hellene
They sound very similar but their meanings are very distinct.
Romèos was the Latin speaking people member of the Papal Church
Romiòs was the Hellenic speaking Orthodox people.
Even though they conquered us we didn’t saw ourselves like them. The Byzantine Empire was founded as the “New Rome” but very quickly it changed to a Hellenic Empire!

This is a Catholic symbol, NOT a Christian symbol. Lets be clear.
Not one single Catholic country, the Vatican included, use the Cyrillic alphabet. All of the Eastern Orthodox Christians use the Cyrllic alphabet and this symbol only makes sense in the Cyrllic alhabet as it is the letters H and R for the word Hristos which means Jesus. Thus this symbol is Orthodox Christian, not Catholic.
