America: "Free Speech"
Also America : "Hell and damn are swear words"
Which always brings to mind that episode of The Monkees where one of them is possessed by the devil - cue many jokes about "you can't say h(bleep) on television"
@@Grithron2 I was a big monkees fan when I was knee high to a grasshopper but my memory isn't the best. I'll have to look it up to refresh my memory 😂
taskmaster is amazing
Please react to some of it!
Joe Wilkinson’s potato task is a good one!
@@jamiewilson9280that whole series was amazing.b
US prudishness about nudity always makes me laugh, as it produces 90% of the worlds porn.
The hysteria over the Wardrobe Malfunction matches the hysteria over Russell Brand's Sachs-o'-phone.
And given that that is what some people think about us Brits as well... You know, "no sex, please, we're British"!
Spaced is one of the best television programmes ever made. Aside from the brilliant storyline, hilarious comedy and great acting, each episode is like playing 'spot the film parody', there are so many movie references it's a joy for any film buff.
Plus it has The Staunton Lick by Lemon Jelly - the best 'conclusion' music I've ever heard - a perfect ending to a perfect story.
I agree with everything you just said!
Abfab was simply absolutely fabulous.
Spaced is pretty much the proto-cornetto trilogy. If you've seen Shaun of the Dead etc then you know what to expect.
I did read somewhere that when the swearing, smoking and drinking had been taken out for the US version of Ab Fab nothing was left.
Please keep James Corden in the USA !!
Taskmaster is great! We have it in Denmark too (since 2018). I think you'd enjoy it, all the different tasks and funny interactions and funny and creative ways to solve the tasks.(often their are also loopholes within the rules to the specific task, you just have to find them, or its just funny to see them break the rules and get 0 points 😆)
i have to watch spaced at least once a year and me and my wife have incorporated lots of the dialogue into our everyday life.
You absolutely should track down Spaced to watch. It's so so good
Naked Attraction was hilarious lolllll
Task master is brilliant, you should react to it
Thanks - you've prompted me to finally open my Misfits box set and have a couple of quiet evenings in, rewatching the whole series.
There were a number of reasons Taskmaster didn't work. (I have seen the US version) First the shortened run time made no sense as it reduced both the number of tasks and the comedic interaction. Then there was the issue of the main host who needs to play the part as if he is contemptuous of their efforts. There was also a distinct lack of chemistry between Reggie Watts and Alex Horne. But the main problem is one of attitude. The comedians competing in the UK aren't really competing at all. None of them really worry about winning or losing. The comedians on the US version were aggressively competing as if the loser was going to be executed. Like most American comedy it lacked the spirit of whimsy that is in most British comedy. To demonstrate this difference in attitude think of sports betting where Americans bet on point spread and Brits bet on which matches will end in a draw.
" as if the loser was going to be executed." USA in a nutshell.
Taskmaster has worked exceptionally in other markets though. Particularly the Norwegian, Finnish, Swedish and Kiwi adaptations
@@mjwoodroff8446 I agree. All of those work well, especially the New Zealand version.
Yep, that's it in a nutshell. If the British comedians knew they couldn't win a task, they put all their effort into making their failure as EPIC as they could - they embraced their failure and turned it into a piece of contemporary art.
The US comedians were all so abrasive and aggressive and obsessed with feminism. Just not fun to watch.
I knew Simon Pegg was in it, because his face was in it. 🤣😂 I don't know whether that was a planned statement for comedic effect, or if it was off the cuff, but that is soooo funny.
Are US audiences REALLY as prudish as TV shows think they are?? It's hard to believe!
Another British/Irish TV show that bombed in the US was Father Ted. Too many folks in the US complained about it being anti-Irish and anti-Catholic, despite it being written by and acted by Irish Catholics. Guess people didn't get the irony or the ability to laugh at themselves - a very Irish trait in itself.
Hubby & I love Naked Attraction... love how it promotes positive body image etc.... we both say to each other what we like etc... we also like to know the outcomes of the Dates if relationships happened or not... Another show we both like is First Dates we love seeing if anything develops also..... Loved what Anna the presenter of Naked attraction said about Nadine Dorries (MP) a politician Culture Secretary...... ( Being interviewed on Times Radio, Anna Richardson said that her response would be to ban the minister from her show Naked Attraction. She said: "I just think that, even though Naked Attraction is about the beauty of the body. I think it ultimately comes down to personality, doesn't it?" Richardson said that she would never have Nadine Dorries on her show, saying she had shown her "true colours". She added: "I don't think that we could reveal any part of that woman that is in any way enlightening or attractive.") LMAO x
Heroes and misfits are completely different shows....both amazing! But different 😊
Save the cheerleader, save the world!

Spaced is amazing. The better your movie literacy the better.
I can't imagine Americans dealing with The League of Gentlemen.

We need to see your reaction to naked attraction. We don't need to see the programme but your reaction will be priceless.
Taskmaster is great! It is one of my comfort programmes.
Taskmaster is my favourite game show of all time. Genius concept and using mainly UK (but some overseas) stand ups, every series has a new and interesting cast and moments of sheer genius from contestants (as well as plenty of toe-curling moments when their brains melt under the pressure of the timed tasks). Spaced only ran for two short series and is superb. I'd recommend both of these as I think you will enjoy them.
The Holy Trinity you HAVE to watch: SPACED, BLACK BOOKS, THE I.T. CROWD (and above them all, FATHER TED). (0s UK sitcoms that are unsurpassed :-)
You should react to the little Britain series. Was hilarious pushes the boundaries
Good watch would be 'Taskmasters most iconic moments' to get you started on that show
"we have a prudish idea of what should be on TV", the USA also has the biggest porn industry on Earth
Porn is OK As long as they don't say "hell" or "damn" 😂
Hi JJ ❤
I loved misfits at the time, it was really good. The inbetweeners movies were good, their dance seen was still makes laugh 😂
"Spaced" is fantastic! Yes, there are a lot of British references but a lot of Hollywood ones too - and the cast is perfection.
as they said naked attraction was "publicly" derided but was at the top of the HBO viewing list, so someone was watching it.
I saw the original version of Inbetweeners on a cable channel where they didn't have to censor anything, and it was hilarious. When I heard they were making an American version I just groaned because I knew it wouldn't be any good.
We really shouldn't remake British TV shows. Their shows are fine the way they are if you can watch them unsanitized
Misfits was great because it didn't take itself too seriously, felt a bit more believable than other super power things. Funny too
Definitely check out Spaced. It got a dvd release in the USA... IIRC it had a Tarrantino guest commentary! One of the greatest shows ever and only 14 half hour episodes.
"...it also seems a little bit shallow" 🤣🤣🤣
SPACED... you will love it (I hope)
I would love to see what Americans make of Vic and Bob or Brass Eye!
Recently new to your channel which I find very enjoyable. Has there ever been a JJLA reacts to Harry Enfield sketches? 😂
Popping up well played 😂
If it has James Cordon in it I switch channel.
I’m the same.
If he's a host or in any other position to talk his mind I don't like him, but when he's playing a character written by someone else he's alright, like the two episodes of Doctor Who he was in
Little Britian is legendary
Little Britain is 💩.
Inbertweeners is probably the most referenced show by under 30s in the uk is one of the goats
Gogglebox tried to make a us one but failed because they didn't have the british comedy to help it
James Corden and Ruth Jones (who are both in it) wrote Gavin and Stacey. Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes (then Stevenson) who are both in Spaced also wrote and starred in that - Edgar Wright directed it. It’s that writer-performer thing we have again
Curly haired fella from Misfits was Klaus in The Umbrella Academy.
MOJOUK the ones the polar bear missed loved by the "wee bit slow" ones over the pond in La La Land who find deep diving Tubes of You hole of dross a dark art like "STICK" in car or eating with a knife and fork ...Bless them
You don’t look old enough to remember Northern Exposure
He turned 47 just a few weeks ago!
47? No way
He looks in his late twenties, early thirties .@@Masque54
Hearing you say you have watched Misfits made my day. Nice one JJ!
Oh and don't waste your time judging American nipples, invest that time in Spaced! :)
You have to watch Spaced. It's such a brilliant show.
Yeah, "Spaced" is amazing. You NEED to watch it.
Misfits filmed at the thamesmead estate.
The same estate/lake from A clockwork orange.
Don't worry, I haven't seen any of these either and I live in the UK!
5:42 AAAGH! "Those Gold Spindle Chairs!" (TM)
Shameless is the only show I can think of that translated well.
Some things just don't translate. The Uk tried a version of the Golden Girls, It was terrible. :). When somebody saya boobies, vajayjays and peepees that just says it all. Remember, a lot of this stuff comes from the BBC which doesn't have advertisers to defer to. :). Plus we are more open minded anyway. Most of us. The age of consent should make that obvious. And the fact that violence is preferable to sex in the US - well, that's really rather sad.
Taskmaster is amazing, and naked attraction is pretty fun and unique, lol.
Woe that Stacey from the US Gavin and Stacey was so pretty, i'd watch it just for her 😅
The Office was one that really worked well in the USA.
"Taskmaster" is brilliant - you really need to watch some UK episodes. "Spaced" is also great, as are other shows with overlapping cast members (such as "Big Train" and "Green Wing"). Another excellent British sitcom which had a flopped US version is "Coupling" - which was a show along the same lines as "Friends", but much much funnier. "I would like to see naked bodies and judge them" should be a phone ringtone :)
Misfits was great, though started to fall off towards the end - First 3 seasons were excellent, but 4 and 5 are pretty skippable imo.
Spaced is just amazing.
Ab Fab was brilliant. Perhaps it didn't go down in the US because it is a saturical view of the type of people who are in Hollywood.
PS They make stars and fashion designers god's we laugh at the falseness!😅
Wasn’t going to comment but the movie Death at a funeral, we were crying with laughter then a couple of years later turned it on and it’s a US version, couldn’t get past the first ten minutes.
skins was amazing but cant understand how they thought that could pass in the US. Inbetweeners i have not seen a single us viewer not get the humour of being at a high school as a teenage boy. Also the more shows you watch from other english speaking cultures without subtitles the more your brain will tune to the accents Ab Fab has mostly RP english.
You’ve got to watch Taskmaster and the Inbetweeners one day, I feel like you’d really get the humour. Would love to see reaction videos to them!
I snarfed when you said pee pees 😂
James Corden Co-wrote “Gavin & Stacey” as well as appearing in it
Americans will never “get”the panel show format, their culture is strive to win at all costs,Brits however realise that winning or losing is secondary, the enjoyment is in the playing. They couldn’t comprehend “I’m sorry I haven’t a clue” which is a work of genius.
‘Whose line is it anyway’ had a good run.
Spaced is the best thing you'll ever watch!
you should react to task master its amazing i think you'd love it!
I don't know how youtube works with reacting to copyrighted content in full form, but even if you're not able to put it on the channel, I HIGHLY recommend you watch Taskmaster. It's one of the best shows in recent years.
Please react to naked attraction, or at least someone explaining it. Sometimes it's surprisingly wholesome
I'm from the UK and the only one of this list i have watched is Inbetweeners, the rest i just don't fancy at all....perhaps because it is all English humour and i am Scottish and we have our own brand of humour.
Gavin and stacey was one of the greats
Thing about naked attraction is to show that the surface level attraction to a bodytype, doesn't usually work out. When the couples are attracted to a body they go on a date, a normal out in the world wearing clothing dates... It is shallow for a reason, it shows how you can be attracted to a body, but not the person when you meet them & get to know them.
Fun fact! Jerry Springeer was born in a London tube station!
Big issue with Skins was the US version of the show just focused only on sex and drug, etc. like the UK version might of had a lot of it, but it was there in context as part of a real story. The US version seemed to remove any real story and just have the kids doing sex, swearing, and drugs to be cool.
(Naked Attraction): "But this seems a bit shallow for Americans..." ROFL!!!!!!!!!!
As a Brit, I completely understand what you mean regarding subtitles; there seems to be a trend of mumbling and terrible diction in modern drama, and when that is combined with a less-familiar accent, it is easy to completely lose words. I can also understand networks wanting to subtitle AbFab, because a couple of the characters (Eddie and Bubble) have heightened styles of speech which are easily understandable to a British ear because we are used to hearing these accents all the time, but could easily throw off a non-Brit. Nobody wants to watch a tv show in their own language while having to strain to understand what is being said - it takes away the enjoyment.
In the '60s they tried to put subtitles on the Beatles movies
Umbrella academy you were thinking of
Why are you NOT a narrator? Your voice is perfect. ❤
Skins is exactly like real life in some areas. Not somewhere I've ever lived but I'm certainly aware of how it can be. Not sure why the narrator said what he did.
I've seen a video about the US version of Spaced and it did indeed sound, to put no too fine a point on it, shit! And this is as a Brit who loved the UK version, introducing us all to Simon Pegg and Nick Frost most notably! There was a US version of Red Dwarf that never went beyond the pilot, it even had Robert Llewellyn, the second Kryten in it, but it missed the point horrendously! The people behind it missed the whole joke of Dave Lister, that being "what if the last human being in the universe is a complete slob?", with the American Lister being completely and utterly nothing like Scouser Craig Charles' Lister, his accent actually enhancing his performance! I think I might have watched a bit too much Red Dwarf as a kid, though, introduced to me by my late dad back in the early 90s (what a time for British media...), when I get really snarky I tend to slip into a Scouse accent and sound similar to Craig more as he was in later series, rather than earlier ones, or even when he was hosting Robot Wars, actually adapted from the US's Battlebots and originally hosted by Jeremy Clarkson! Yes, you read that right! Though, that was a successful import here, but we had something no other country did: The House Robots, "the most fearsome fighting machines on the planet"!
Oooh yeah misfits. I fucking love it. Watch it at least once a year ❤
You godda watch Spaced!
No advertisers have no say on TV output. In the 1980s Channel 4 broadcast a LGBT weekly magazine programme Out on Tuesday initially advertiser pulled their adverts. So CH4 showed a screen saying something like We should be showing you an advert for..... (insert brand) but they do not want to be associated with the gay community. The next week the advertisers were back.
Plenty of films with some nudity as appropriate in story. A game show, the people just stand there and are judged, just makes me feel how far humanity has fallen!
You HAVE you watch the inbetweeners if you want to understand people in the uk, its a perfect depection of life as a teenager nothing like anything in america. Its one of the best birtish shows by far, i rewatch it all the time and im still dying laughing, you have to have thick skin though its a really realistic portrayal of teenagers haha.
You....... you haven't seen Taskmaster........ Ok. Breathe.
WATCH TASKMASTER IMMEDIATELY!!!!
Sorry, it's a visceral response.
Taskmaster is a great show.
JJ: you *absolutely* need to check out ‘SPACED’, my dude! Despite its inclusion on this list, I know for a fact that it has a loyal cult following in the US, as well as Canada and Australia.
Quentin Tarantino and Patton Oswalt are big fans, and feature in the DVD commentaries on the US release. Granted, the show is indeed jam-packed with copious UK pop culture references, which will obviously fly over the heads of non-UK audiences, but that doesn't lessen the quirky charm they bring to show’s overall aesthetic. There are still many other movie references that most US viewers should pick up on.
The US pilot remake was indeed a flop, and for good reason - it simply didn't warrant a US translation: ‘SPACED’ has a charm and visual style all its own that I’m convinced should win you over. You really owe it to yourself to check it out!
(I say all of that because I’m utterly biased of course; ‘SPACED’ remains my all-time favouurite sitcom (and yes, it totally deserves to be typed in ALL CAPS).
PS - I'm regulaly enjoying your reactions and channel content, keep up the good work, fella! 👍😎
Oh, and it is endlessly quotable. ☺️
Having such a large land mass means that their watershed (the time when TV programmes which might be unsuitable for children and fragile minds can be broadcast) is much later than other countries, so profanity is not encouraged, unlike the UK where swear words can be used as punctuation.
Yip, I watched the first episode of the American version of Taskmaster out of curiosity, it is no match to our version. The contestants on the American version just came across as obnoxious.
While Taskmaster didn't work well for the US adaptation, other adaptations have worked exceptionally well. Notably the New Zealand (season 2 may well be the best single season of any version), Norwegian, Finnish and Danish versions.
Could you react to a tv show?
Taskmaster is very clever.
Umbrella academy
Misfits was excellent.
12:40 it’s less shallow than you imagine it being. There’s people of all shapes n sizes n hairyness lmao 😂 it’s crazy. It awkward to watch.
Celebrity comedy game shows just don't seem to work at all in the USA. I have heard it's because the american comedians are too competitive and so go straight for the right answer instead of giving humourous out there answers.
I THINK Taskmaster might be on Netflix. if so give it a go!
