    Re-watching this after your recent video and I can just understand so much more what you’re going through. So glad you never gave up and you were able to become healthier and stronger, truly an inspiration 💕 been watching you since your week in my life outfit videos when you only wore brandy Melville, Abercrombie and uggs in high school! Hahaha love seeing how much you’ve grown!

    I'm actually a D1 rower myself, and I respect this so much. I have been struggling with this decision myself and hearing it from someone else going through the same thing is extremely helpful. you have all of our support through this difficult decision!

    We all support you either way. Whether you are rowing or aren't. As your subscribers we love you no matter what your doing. It's awesome that you are strong enough in your values and personal life that you can make a decision like this. Being a D1 athlete is an amazing experience/opportunity but so is being a RUclipsr. I'm so proud of you Gretchen. Love ya and keep doing what you are doing.

      Ps. I totally get it. I have been an athlete for a super long time and had to make the decision to give up athletics this year (my senior year) because of injuries among other things. And it's true that not everyone is going to support you but just keep strong in what you believe and your own self values and it becomes a lot easier.

    It's so amazing how Gretchen was able to keep up with school work, youtube and rowing! I'm 3 weeks into my freshman year in college and I'm still so overwhelmed with the school work! Gretchen definitely inspires me to work harder though, she was able to juggle three things at once! Thank you for always being honest with us Gretchen, we love you!

    Aww Gretchen :( as a rower i can't even begin to imagine giving up rowing because of other reasons that caused your lost of passion for rowing. that really is sad. when you row, really a lot of your life surrounds it. CLOSETS! 80% of my clothes are rowing clothes. You made the right choice following your heart. At the end of the day, what matters is that you're enjoying your days and if rowing and youtube makes you miserable, you should choose something that you really do love. I support you all the way!!!

    Being an athlete, I am so proud of you. I understand how passionate you are about rowing, and I don't mean to assume, but I can't imagine how hurtful it must be to decide to leave rowing. You being able to recognize what will help you grow the most, and makes you happiest, inspires me to do the same. One of my favorite poets had a line that says "it hurts to become", and I hope that it will help remind you of your purpose of making the decision you made. Thank you for always being so genuine and transparent in your youtube life!!

  • @kaylabeck3461

    Thank you for this video, I know I'm not in the same exact situation as you but our feelings were very similar. I quit basketball my senior year of high school after being a four year varsity starter because it made me so unhappy. I would cry overnight after practice or games whether I did good or bad. I grew up on a traveling team that was very respected and taught me so many lessons on how a team and life should be ran and what I had in high school was no where near that. I had so many people come up to me at school, the mall, at other games and tell me that I would regret my decision and that I was letting my talent and hard work go to waste. These people had no idea who I was and had no idea what my parents had to deal with every night when I broke down. I loved that you chose to make yourself happy and stay true to yourself because finally I feel that I'm not alone for choosing to quit to make myself happy. Lately I have been wondering if I made the right decision and this completely reminded me that I have. Thank you for this Gretchen, I don't think this could have come at a more perfect time. Love you so much!!!

    I just started my junior year and I'm doing the IB program which is basically the equivalent of first year university classes. Im a swimmer and I train about 18 hours a week and it's crazy hard to balance school and my sport, but I could never imagine giving it up, as difficult as it is. I really admire the fact that you were able to give up something you love for another thing you love, it really takes a lot of thought and time to do something like this

    • @hallikittylover
      @hallikittylover 8 лет назад +2

      I'm doing IB at my school and I am in marching band and work 20 hours a week so I feel you. Keep pushing! It's been rough for me but it'll be worth it.

    • @zailiarrlou
      @zailiarrlou 8 лет назад +11

      I did IB and im entering 4th year university now. trust me when i say that it is not equivalent to first year university. i know you have a weird sense of pride from doing IB, but i learned the hard way that it is not what it is made out to be. it is good to do though- you do learn amazing time management and skills and develop a solid work ethic.

    • @Hannahlynne96
      @Hannahlynne96 8 лет назад +1

      I thought my first two years of college were a lot easier than ib and I'm not doing an easy major but I think it's case by case. Some people will think it's easy and some will think it's hard it also depends on the teachers you have.

    • @SwmGrl99
      @SwmGrl99 8 лет назад +1

      yeah i didnt really want to say that it was the equivalent because my sister already graduated IB and i have a strong sense of what its like, but my teachers have already compared it to that and i was kinda like uh are you sure cause as difficult as it is, it still is a high school course

    • @maggie1000
      @maggie1000 8 лет назад

      I think it really depends where you live and what college you plan on going to because all the old IB seniors who come back to my high school say college is easier than IB except for the ones who go out of state. And even just applying to colleges like I'm a senior in IB and I found that like a lot of out of state schools don't really weight IB as heavily and some of the in state schools I'm applying to in my state so I guess I'm lucky with that that IB will have a big impact on my college because of the schools in my state

    I was a D1 rower at UT and started a business my 2nd year of school! I chose to pursue my business which will allow me to retire in my 20's vs winning 1st or 2nd at the NCAA Championship. After my 2nd year I chose not to pursue Rowing anymore and felt so isolated, misunderstood, and judged. I was also very self critical and my self image was partially based on rowing. There was pain through the experience and detaching to pursue my future but it was worth it.... I know how you felt and it is hard to go through something like that when it was your life and most importantly your commitment to others and yourself. We made good decisions, trading the good for the great. Keep going Gretchen! Don't listen to the haters ;)

I know when I first found your channel and heard you rowed, I was so fascinated that I looked into it at my college. Things didn't work out for me, but it made me knowledgable about it. I would think that it would provide a good message about rowing and especially to go to Boston University. This is just crazy, but I think you made the right decision for you Gretchen. I think this is a super mature decision. When you start to doubt yourself, try and remember that it's super important to do fewer things well, it's so much better to fully invest in a couple things instead of doing too many things half way. Being stretched too thin is SO easy to fall into in college.

    Is this why you had to take down one of the vlogmasses?

    I'm so happy that at least for your freshman year you got to live out your dream playing D1, although tbh I'm not v sure if I know exactly what rowing is as nobody does it around here. But my sport is basketball and I know I'll never be recruited because that's crazy competitive. I'm glad you followed your heart. 💜💜

    I think you made the right choice. Sports should be about having fun and being active. The fact that an organization can take it over for their own profit motives and dictate who can participate and what you can and can't do is just wrong. RUclips can be a stepping stone to a real future career for the rest of your life whereas rowing or other sports should just be fun hobby for you to enjoy.

      No. Lightweight rowing can't receive scholarships.

    I rowed for the first three years of high school and I had the worst experience this past fall on the team which led me to quit. I have such a passion for the sport and am really sad that I'm not doing it but it's for the best.

    I rowed from 8th grade all the way through high school and I loved it so much! I got really burned out my senior year though and I knew I didn't want to continue rowing in college but I'm so glad I did it in high school. I definitely recommend rowing for people who are thinking about trying it out!

      Gretchen! I was at Youth Nats in 2015 and saw you weighing your boat in and didn't say anything bc I was in line too and thought it would be awkward haha. I'm so glad you made this video! As a junior, this really helped me.

    Omg I was just scrolling through dorm tours and then this video came up and I row and idk I just thought that was so weird just because like not the most common sport. I've been rowing since I was 10 and that's so cool a RUclips rows too!!!!!
