  • I try my hand at turning a Djembe, a type of drum, but I'm not sure if my lathe, and me, can take the heat. This is part 1 as of yet unknown number of parts, since I'm turning still as I'm posting this video...

      +Keith Barrow Yeah Keith, mark me down for waiting too, this is nerve wracking! I can hint to you that part two is already shot, and just needs editing, we'll see how part three is working out today, and if I'm alive at the end of the day, I might have enough energy to edit part 2.

    You my friend are one brave soul, my heart was in my mouth watching that massive hunk of wood spinning on a lathe similar to my old lathe, that wouldn't have seen anything half that size! I sincerely hope that this works for you, and look forward to seeing the following parts.
    Good luck, and above all, be safe :)
    Cheers

      +Mike Waldt Thanks Mike, my body, and my lathe, are all fine, I'm in the shop at the moment, just finished hollowing half the depth of the total length, switched it to the other side, and I've started working on the second half, after that I'm pretty much done until it's dry and ready to be finished, skinned, stringed and tuned :)

      +Roger Leslie Wet pine is sure different to turn, I can tell you that :)
      Actually is very pleasant on the gouge, and it's not as sappy as I expected it to be, so that's good... but it's so full of water it weighs so much! but I sure like a refreshing shower with each cut in the hot shop, so it's a win/win :)

    Hey bud I just read James' comment. While I completely understand his opinion I have to say you do a great job of trying to convince people not to do these things. Ok Yuval I thought I was the only one who did this sort of thing! I'm happy and scared for you all at the same time. I loved your disclaimer. I can't tell you how many people sent me stuff saying I ruined their lathe after my upgrade video. I mean one guy from England was very upset that I "got him shocked", quite a feat when I've never even been to England. Lol. Great project and I'll say be as safe as you can my friend.
    Take care and do a kindness.

      +MARK Baid Thanks Mark! And yes, I do some things I wouldn't tell anyone else to do, I mean, people do crazy stuff at home each and every day, is it someone else's responsibility? I made a choice to show what I do, for good and bad, what works and not, and I hope people will use it to learn from it. What choices they make is for them to work out. It's a heated point as you well know, but I'll handle the fire back if and when it comes :)
      Thanks again Mark!!

      +Pedalz Workshop Thanks Pedalz, now making a drum on a potter's wheel is also something that can work, I guess... :) I was thinking to use goat skin, I'm no expert, and this is my first drum, but I've learned goat skin is thinner and is preferred for this type of drum... can't wait to finish this shell and let it dry so I could skin and string it! If you're going to try this too, hook me up with some pictures man, or even a video!!

      +Jake Webb Thanks Jake! Yeah, I'm not a fan of the saw too, I had to try it on the wood while on the lathe, there was so much of it, and I saw this done ones in a video a few years back, thought it would be fun to try, but in that video it wasn't a fresh log, so... keep it safe!! :)

    I can see that this is going to take you a while to finish this drum. Next time you should try making a smaller drum and cut down on some of the heavy work. I wouldn't mind having a smaller drum that I could give to my grand daughter for her next birthday. She plays the drums and is really good at it too.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  9 лет назад

      +RoxyIB I can promise you Roxy, that unless I'll have 6000 Euro drop on me from nowhere to get a new and bigger lathe, my next drum will be smaller, which I fully intend on making. I was trying this out since I couldn't contain the need to make this large one, but once out of the system, I'll be back to things more fitting my lathe and the size of my shop, which also gives me a little bit of trouble.
      Thanks for taking the time to comment, always a pleasure! :)

      @@feurbie Thank you! My lathe is only 1/2 a horse power string. the same model of lathe in the UK is 3/4 horse power. for a lathe this size it's a very weak motor, I would really love a 2 to 3 horse power lathe...

    That is one very large piece of timber. It looked quite big when you started outside as I could see it was at least knee height. It wasn't until you placed it on the lathe that you could really see how big it is.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  8 лет назад

      Yeah, just lifting it and putting it between centers was a fight... it was 60 Kilos (about 132 pounds) when I chucked it up for the first time. Quite a bit more then my wife!! :)

  • @DIYwithUncleCy
    @DIYwithUncleCy 9 лет назад +3

    Wha hooo. Yep that is entirely too big for the lathe LOL. Pushing the envelope is the polite way to say it.
    I didn't mean for you to use the chainsaw while it was on the lathe. You take it off and cut in around the bottom of the bowl then cut from the bottom to the relief cut at the bowl. gets rid of a lot of weigh then your roughing a piece that is muc smaller and easier to turn.
    My last lathe had the same pulley arrangement (but was a 16 inch) and I only got it to slow down about 50 rpm with the short belt trick.
    On my old channel when I had a log on the lathe I had already hollowed the bowl and rough shaped the outside with chainsaw and side grinder. It reduced the weight enough that 500 rpm wasn't quite so scary.
    Looks like you are well on the way with this one though, just take it easy and remain cautious of it, you'll be fine..

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  9 лет назад

      +Cyrus Fillmore (Time Lapse Turner) Thanks Cy, yeah, I guess it pushing the envelope, and then folding it up, them pushing it dipper still into the hell hole from which all good ideas come from :)
      But I'm doing good, and I'm already hollowing this bad boy. And Cy, just so you'll know, in the final episode (the most exiting one) you'll be getting the full blown credit for everything ;)

    Neat! Maybe make a jig to hold a router horizontally? I've seen others do that.Search RUclips for "router wood lathe"

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  9 лет назад

      +Kenny Boothe Yeah Kenny, I've seen those before, but didn't think about it... anyway I don't have a router, and I'm not sure how well a router will hold with fresh wet wood, it was like taking a shower with each pass, which was surprisingly refreshing and wasn't as sappy as I expected it to be.

      +Yuval Lahav I would love to see this entire process, I have a drum that was made out of mango wood and carved and never thought about how out was made but this has really piqued my interest. did you turn it green? Or is it just that big that you have to wait for it to dry fully?

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  9 лет назад

      It's as fresh as it can get, the log came to me about an hour after it was cut down, it's like taking a shower with each pass of the gouge. You should know that it's not that common for these Djembe to be made on the lathe, traditionally they are carved, but we're man of the machine!! so why not? :)
