Best OBS Settings for Streaming 2024 - Complete Guide

  • In this tutorial I show you the best OBS settings for streaming 2024. When it comes to streaming it's best to use your GPU's inbuilt video encoder. Not all computers have these options, however, most gaming PCs will. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card then you will want to set the encoder to NVIDIA NVENC H.264. If your PC has an AMD graphics card then you will want to use the AMD HW H.264 video encoder. In situations where neither of these options are available you will want to stream using x264.
Another important OBS streaming setting is rate control. This is the method used when encoding your stream. The best rate control for live streams is CBR as it provides a constant quality for your stream.
Additionally, you will also want to have the best bitrate for streaming. The higher your bitrate the better quality your stream will be. However, streaming platforms like Twitch and RUclips do have bitrate restrictions. Another factor to consider is your upload speed as this will limit the bitrate you can stream with.
The best bitrate for streaming to Twitch is 8000, however, 6500 is also a good option. When streaming to RUclips you can set your bitrate to 10000, providing your upload speed allows it. By maximising your bitrate while streaming you can ensure your viewers are getting a good viewing experience.
If you're experiencing laggy stream then you can usually fix it by lowering your bitrate. At times low end PCs might not be able to stream with the best bitrate. However, there is a workaround. If your stream is laggy then you can lower the bitrate and frame rate. With a lower frame rate (FPS) a lower bitrate will look better.
To ensure you have the best OBS stream settings you will want to test increasing the encoder settings. If you start to experience dropped frames then you will need to lower the settings. As there is a lot more than just bitrate to consider there is a lot to play with. However, not every setting makes a huge difference when streaming.
For preset you will want to use the P6: Slower (Better Quality), or P7: Slowest (Best Quality) option. However, you can lower this if needed.
Once you have the best OBS settings for streaming you will need to apply them. This will save the settings to be used everytime you stream.

The bitrate guide is not what I was looking for. Sure if you have an upload speed over 20mb/ps you can stream at a higher bitrate, but that doesn't mean you should, because you internet has to be stable at all times. Twitch for example, has a guideline for these settings. Depending on your settings and speed, from best to worst when it comes to bitrate, 6000 > 4500 > 3000 are the numbers you're looking for. Anything over 6000 is not necessary unless if you want to stream at 4k which doesn't make a different for viewers who don't have monitors or devices that supports 4k.

Um..Why my OBS missing both lot of the setting from the video here? Look Ahead, Psycho Visual Tuning, both missing. Presets too, just 3 options too: Quality/Balanced/Speed. Is that some old version of OBS? I'm with Windows 10 and amd gpu (rx 7900).
Edit: Yep. Said features sadly are only for Nvidia GPU's.
For AMD, setting should be (as taken from official OBS post):
"1) Set Profile to "High" B-frames to 1
    2) In the AMF/FFMPEG Options field, enter HighMotionQualityBoostEnable=1
    3) Untick "Rescale output", you should be using the "Video category" on the right side list instead, under "Output (scaled) Resolution"

Nvidia NVENC AV1 for RTX users (best video encoder)
Preset is best to use P5 slow / Good Quallity for 1080p , P6/P7 is 2k or 4k.
Multipass Mode i'd set to full Resolution, enabling this mode gives you higher quality at the expense of more GPU resources.

Hi. For an RTX 4090 + 7950X3D setup and an internet connection of 1000/300 Mbps, which option do you recommend more: x264 or Nvidia NVENC? From the tests I conducted, it seems that when the game is more CPU-intensive, like CS2 or Valorant, the Nvidia codec gives slightly better results, whereas for more GPU-intensive games, x264 yields a few more FPS. Do they also differ in quality or anything else that could guide the decision on which one is better?

If I want to record my stream and edit it later. Would having my stream audio track on 4 and my recording audio tracks set to 1, 2, and 3 (for gameplay, webcam, and discord - in that order) allow my recording to be split into multiple audio tracks? I've had the audios for these splits already and it works perfectly for recording. Still, I am unsure of how that'll work for streaming as I would like to be able to edit the audio separately after the stream as I do for my recordings.

    • @slurptech
      @slurptech  8 месяцев назад +3

You can use that resolution if you want, I’ve even suggested it in a previous video. However, I usually recommend 1080p as it’s better/easier to work with when creating content outside of Twitch, which is the best way to grow your stream. So for most people 1080p is the best option

Edit: this is due to the fact that FPS games have more pixels and more graphical updates

When i 1st started my fps was at 60 but my streams would be choppy and I would get way less frame in game so I dropped it to 30 and that's been good for me. So should I really go back to 60? If you have 12 Mbps this mean you have a 1.5 MBps upload speed. while OBS max bitrate for non partners right now is: 6000 Kilobits not even KiloBytes.
So 6000 Kilobits are equal to 0.75 MBps so you are good to go with that upload speed of 12Mbps. Even if you family is watching netflix on one device at 1080p they may be using around less than 300 KB/s which is stand for 2mbps upload
so 0.75+2mbps is like 0.95 you still having plenty of room to not saturated your stream.
But if I was you, I will try to drop to 5500 to have a bit more of margin of upload speed, and that's still good.
      Hope this helps.

Can I really stream for twitch at 8000 bitrate with no issues even not being a partner? Everywhere I look on the internet says that twitch only allows 6000 max bitrate if you are not partner.

8000 works for everyone, and always has. You can even do higher resolutions & framerates above 1080p60, but it doesn't turn out as well with such a low bitrate cap. You can also crank up the bitrate much higher than 8000, but your livestream won't be viewable by people (you DO appear live), though your VOD will be watchable at your true bitrate.
