Is this a good place to confess that I, tsar Dmitri, am still alive
@@bloodstoneore4630 Dmitri! Where were you when the monarchy was crumbling, that was your moment my guy! Now Putin's gonna try to disappear you
I'm waiting for the Alcibiades episode!
Plot twist : Rasputin was Dmitri the whole time. He just got tired of being a tsar and wanted to be a monk for a while.
Until he got tired of that and wanted to bang the Romanov Tzar’s Queen... and like every woman in Moscow
And later, he got tired of being a Monk, so he wanted to be a foreboding and dangerous man, so he took on the identity of "Vladimir Putin"
Hah funny you mention this but there is a theory that Tsar Alexander I (r. 1801-1825) actually faked his own death to become a monk.

I'm reading a book about the history of the entirety of the Romanov's rule from 1613 all the way to 1918, and when the false Dmitris appeared in the book I actually laughed out loud because I had this same thought.
I love to imagine how Russia probably just had a string of those people we have in every asilium thinking they are Santa just casually coming out of the woods saying how "yes, I am the Tsar!"
The whole "Iam the real Tsar"-thing happened a couple of times. It is similar to the "Iam the real pope"-thing which happened even more often, but has lost its appeal in recent times.

The people: "YOU'RE DMITRI"
Unlucky person: "FINE I AM DMITRI NOW FUCK OFF!"
"He's not the Czar, he's a very naughty boy!"
The people: "How shall we fuck off, O Tzar?"
All Rusians: "No *We* thought you were.....dead."
Dmitri Ivanovich: "My death was greatly exaggerated."
In the Name of Dimitri, Dimitri lives in death
somehow Dmitri Ivanovich has returned for the fifth time
Someone: *dies*
Dimitri, Rasputin, 100 Slavs to angry to die: weak
I heard about these events as "the Dimitriads" in a college course on History of Russia, thanks for making this way funnier than what the professor taught the class.
In Polish they aee called "Dymitriady"
Oh my it's fun being first in a history video - it will make history!
Holy shit your alive
Congrats and you’re alive!! ^__^
Love your vids.
I like to think that the last 3 times that they "killed" Dmitri, it was a case of mistaken identity as in they stabed a guy who they thought was him and the real Dmitri layed low until he made his big reappearance back shocking everyone. Or everyone who "killed" him stab or slashed him, saw blood and assumed he died when he actually just passed out from being cut. Or he just perfected Rasputin's elixir of immortality and just got bored of dyeing and didn't bother coming back a fifth time.

Correction: King of PLC never wanted his son to become the tsar. He stated this publicly in a latter to the polish nobility, he merely wanted some lands and publicly disapproved of his son becoming tsar both out of fear that he'll be killed like many others and becouse nobility was distrustfull of him after he tried to sell throne of poland-lithuania to some habsburg prince and was discovered. He used the letter to sort of point out and say: "HA i could use my son to take over the funny noble democracy that we have here if he was the Tsar! Look how good of a king i am, respecting the law and not trying to install a absolute monarchy!". (source: "Historia Władysława, królewicza polskiego i szwedzkiego pages 156-158). The nobility or the magnates was the prime driving force behind unifying russia and plc into some sort of a triple monarchy
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian%E2%80%93Muscovite_Commonwealth and the crown itself was offered by the boyars to king's son as well. Otherwise great video!
"some lands" more like all of our land, you guys occupied Moscow. Russian national unity day is celebrated on the day we beat you. It's the closest we have ever been to total destruction (bar WW2).
@@misharuzov2753 Wow. I think I consider this a complement
@@misharuzov2753 It's complicated, usually where there's two Poles there are at least three opinions. Some wanted just to retake Smolensk (which did belong to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania before 1514 and this goal was realized in the end), some were indeed thinking about conquest of the whole Muscovy (Russia). Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski, who won the greatest victory in this war at Klushino in 1610 and took Moscow was actually against this conflict in the first place. He was the one who negotiated with some boyars the plan of prince Władysław becoming Tsar, after converting to Orthodoxy. He later wrote a book about this war criticising Polish King and condemning the magnates like Jerzy Mniszech, who were the ones to first support the false Dmitri.
@@Artur_M.I wouldn't exactly say retake but yeah the borderlands were definitely the main objective.Ukraine is the result of this. Originally Russian cities with Polish cultural influence.

I'm here because I love opera and this guy is featured in Boris Godunov (the first impostor). The kid version also shows up as a ghost in a lot of productions to haunt Boris who is steadily going mad with guilt. Dmitri then hits it up with Polish princess Marina, who is just as ambitious as he is. Vasily is also present as a slimy little bastard trying to make things worse for Boris.
Epic story.
"Oh my god, they killed Dimitri!"
"You bastards!"
3:10 Tsarevich Dmitry could play not just with a knife, but in the medieval analogue of the children's game of "nojichki"("knives"). This game has many varieties, but all involve throwing a knife at a target. When I was a child (1980s) the target was made on the ground under the feet of the players, sometimes there were several targets. And the kids threw knives at targets. One day my knife accidentally ricocheted into my leg. Fortunately, the knife was short and blunt, and the wound was not deep. My wound was anointed with "zelyonka" (magic soviet medical liquid green) and I didn’t even have to put any stitches. But if the prince played with a "podsaidashny noj" or “sideknife” (this is a thin and sharp knife with a blade more than 40 centimeters for piercing chain mail), he could easily inflict a mortal wound on himself. Don't let your children play with long and sharp pieces of iron, and your dynasty will not be interrupted! 😉

I agree, Russia is by far the most interesting of the Slavic countries because of crazy stuff like this.
What's incredible is that not only did Poland occupy Moscow during this crisis, so did Sweden-Finland with a mostly Finnish army.
A weird time
Then few decades later the entire thing is reverses, with PLC on brink of collapse; Swedes ccupying Warsaw and Krakow, Russians sacking Vilnius.

Dude, you can't just repost an excerpt from a History channel documentary in your prologue.
While he had zombies and space aliens in line with almost every History Channel show, there was no mention of Big Foot who is also in most History Channel shows, therefore this video is not up to History Channel standards.
Dimitri Ivanovich is still alive. He's hanging out on Oak Island with the aliens and a certain German artist with a small mustache.
For those wondering what happened with the whole succession crisis, the Smuta: the Poles successfully occupied Moscow and the Polish king's son Vladislaw got to be Tsar for a year or two, before a Russian militia led by Knyaz Dmitry Pozharskiy and a Butcher named Kuzma Minin took Moscow back, after which a nephew of Ivan the Terrible's wife Anastasia Romanovna (patronym), Feodor Romanov (surname) got his son Michael to be elected the new Tsar of Russia, and the first Romanov Tsar of Russia at that, while Feodor got himself a nice and powerful position of the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, changing his name to Filaret and being the true ruler of Russia for a couple of years through his son
My guy just keep on respawning like a boss.
Even Rasputin would say this is a little extreme.
As I am one of Rasputin's reincarnations, yes this is extreme. Not really surprised though.
Well that ended anti-climactically. It's annoying when stories in history end halfway throu-
Russia: There Dimitri is finally dead.
Dimitri: privyet.
Poles: You SOB I'am in.
"You technically can't prove that didn't happen." Then has the flying teapot in the background. Good lord that's great.
Jack, as a Russian, I love, love, love you for covering the Smuta... I mean, totally not the Smuta, but only Dmitri I, of course
“Your supposed to be dead!”
“My death… was greatly exaggerated.”
I wonder if the 2nd and 3rd Dimitri really were the same guy, seeing as how his wife identified him as such.

The HRE pulled the same shenanigans with Frederick II.
There was even a rumour about his possession of a magical ring that gave him invisibility.
I'm not saying Vladimir Putin is also Dmitri...but have you ever noticed how we've never seen Dmitri and Putin in the same room together at the same time?

Dimitri's week:
Sunday: Die
Monday: Reappear after a while
Tuesday: Become the Tsar
Wednesday: Die
Thursday: Disappear for a while
Friday: Reappear after a while
Saturday: Become the Tsar
The first death being faked is more believable because of the seizure theory. If Dimitri actually suffered seizures then faking his death to hide him away would make sense. It could also be why the church never recognized his mothers marriage, she gave birth to a incapable heir.
Now we need a video about Pseudo-Alexios who basically tried to do the same thing but in the Byzantine empire

7:00 His ashes? My prof said it was his whole body, stuffed in a cannon, and then fired in the direction of the PLC.
Great video as always, love it when you cover Russian history, keep it up! But I have to say Pushkin actually popularised the whole 'Goduov got Dmitri killed' narrative with his opera and it is actually quite plausible that he had a fit and stabbed himself with a knife. I mean the whole thing took place way before Feodor died and Godunov had no way of knowing that he wouldn't produce an heir of his own and die childless. Besides Vasilii Shuiskyi (who subsequenty became the tsar for a bit) was leading the whole investigation and had no gain from covering up Godunov's hand in this murder since he ended up framing him later anyway.
It's all very messy just like the rest of Russian history but I'm glad you're willing to go into this to give us the best content
