I like to think that the last 3 times that they "killed" Dmitri, it was a case of mistaken identity as in they stabed a guy who they thought was him and the real Dmitri layed low until he made his big reappearance back shocking everyone. Or everyone who "killed" him stab or slashed him, saw blood and assumed he died when he actually just passed out from being cut. Or he just perfected Rasputin's elixir of immortality and just got bored of dyeing and didn't bother coming back a fifth time.

Correction: King of PLC never wanted his son to become the tsar. He stated this publicly in a latter to the polish nobility, he merely wanted some lands and publicly disapproved of his son becoming tsar both out of fear that he'll be killed like many others and becouse nobility was distrustfull of him after he tried to sell throne of poland-lithuania to some habsburg prince and was discovered. He used the letter to sort of point out and say: "HA i could use my son to take over the funny noble democracy that we have here if he was the Tsar! Look how good of a king i am, respecting the law and not trying to install a absolute monarchy!". (source: "Historia Władysława, królewicza polskiego i szwedzkiego pages 156-158). The nobility or the magnates was the prime driving force behind unifying russia and plc into some sort of a triple monarchy
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian%E2%80%93Muscovite_Commonwealth and the crown itself was offered by the boyars to king's son as well. Otherwise great video!

Some wanted just to retake Smolensk (which did belong to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania before 1514 and this goal was realized in the end), some were indeed thinking about conquest of the whole Muscovy (Russia). Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski, who won the greatest victory in this war at Klushino in 1610 and took Moscow was actually against this conflict in the first place. He was the one who negotiated with some boyars the plan of prince Władysław becoming Tsar, after converting to Orthodoxy. He later wrote a book about this war criticising Polish King and condemning the magnates like Jerzy Mniszech, who were the ones to first support the false Dmitri.

3:10 Tsarevich Dmitry could play not just with a knife, but in the medieval analogue of the children's game of "nojichki"("knives"). This game has many varieties, but all involve throwing a knife at a target. When I was a child (1980s) the target was made on the ground under the feet of the players, sometimes there were several targets. And the kids threw knives at targets. One day my knife accidentally ricocheted into my leg. Fortunately, the knife was short and blunt, and the wound was not deep. My wound was anointed with "zelyonka" (magic soviet medical liquid green) and I didn’t even have to put any stitches. But if the prince played with a "podsaidashny noj" or “sideknife” (this is a thin and sharp knife with a blade more than 40 centimeters for piercing chain mail), he could easily inflict a mortal wound on himself. Don't let your children play with long and sharp pieces of iron, and your dynasty will not be interrupted! 😉

The first death being faked is more believable because of the seizure theory. If Dimitri actually suffered seizures then faking his death to hide him away would make sense. It could also be why the church never recognized his mothers marriage, she gave birth to a incapable heir.

Great video as always, love it when you cover Russian history, keep it up! But I have to say Pushkin actually popularised the whole 'Goduov got Dmitri killed' narrative with his opera and it is actually quite plausible that he had a fit and stabbed himself with a knife. I mean the whole thing took place way before Feodor died and Godunov had no way of knowing that he wouldn't produce an heir of his own and die childless. Besides Vasilii Shuiskyi (who subsequenty became the tsar for a bit) was leading the whole investigation and had no gain from covering up Godunov's hand in this murder since he ended up framing him later anyway.
It's all very messy just like the rest of Russian history but I'm glad you're willing to go into this to give us the best content
