Nicely done. I am always glad to see a non-key comic book get some love. Almost all of my favorite personal books are non-keys. They are associated with a time, a place, or a person. Thank you for sharing your methods.
I too tire of talk of keys, grades, labels, slabs, and bumps. It’s why I almost never talks about those things in my channel. I don’t disparage those who do like those aspects, it’s just not for me.
As to calcium hydroxide (pickling lime - used for canning food, and can be found in most stores carrying canning supplies), I mix up a batch in a 2 liter bottle at least 8 hours before I plan to use it. I let the excess that does not go into solution settle to the bottom, and pour off some of the clearer solution from the top for use on a comic. The saturated clear liquid at the top is my measuring method. ; ) I was surprised to hear you let the comic soak for 30 minutes. For all my personal experiments on Golden, Silver and Bronze age books any soaking over 5 minutes, even in just plain water, seems to seems to quite often visually impact ink. Wishing everyone a healthy and prosperous 2025.
I tried using paper clips a few years back to keep the pages from shifting while the cover is off, but tore one of the pages while removing them, so I switched to small binder clips with pieces of backing board between the clips to protect the pages.
Do you repeat the process for each wrap, so the whitening isn't detected by a grading company? Or do books this age naturally age differently between the inner wraps and the cover? Seems if a grading company sees how white that cover is, vs how brown the wraps are, they flag it?
Sometimes I’ll do the in the interior leafs too. If I do, it only as a matter of conserving the book not for grading purposes. Most of the time the covers are pretty similar in tanning and sharing as the interior leafs but I’ve seen many books in which that’s not the case too. Also there’s no predicting what cgc will flag. One time I cleaned two different x-men books and sent them in. I had accidentally swapped the covers on the two different books so the covers didn’t match the interior leafs. I only noticed this later because someone mentioned it in one of my videos. CGC never caught it and they both got blue labels.
Question, did i notice a slight shrinkage in the cover after? I was just noticing slight white around the whole thing towards the end. Looks absolutely stunning regardless. Also, just got my chamfered boards and tacking iron from you! Thanks again for all you do!
I dont use it in golden age books unless I spot test an area first. Sometimes it works great but other times the inks can fade too much. Mostly it’s ok but I’m still cautious!
when you sandwich between the perforated plastic sheets to dry, do you turns the screws until they are barely snug? Or go a bit harder to squeeze the paper more.
There are nylon bushings that help to regulate the pressure on the book. It’s just barely squeezing the cover with positive pressure. I find that with excessive pressure the cover until it’s completely dry the cover can grow a couple of millimeters. So I keep the pressure reduced just enough to keep it fixed and prevent shrinking.
HI Jack, we did get your message, let me check with my shipping person when she's in and see what she says about it. She doesn't normally work on Sundays. We ship ship to the UK but we have to check postage first. I know she is going to ask exactly what you want so she can weight it first, can you please send a lift of what you'd like to info@immaculate comics.com.
@@wheeljack0 what size? There are several sizes, and we will need a shipping address to get a shipping quote. If you want 15" x 15" boards please send an email requesting a shipping quote to info@immaculatecomics.com and write that you would like two aluminum boards at 15"x15" (if thats the size you want) along with your address. Sorry for the trouble but without this specific information we cannot get a shipping quote. the web ui does not give accurate quotes at all to the UK and severely overcharges the customers. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your methods Michael, it’s greatly appreciated!
You: "And I'm just gonna forcibly immerse this now."
Nolan: "yeah, like it owes you money"
Hahahahaha, love the vids, thank you
Right!? He cracks me up.

Try wooden clothes pins.
@horderphelps1402 this is a great idea!
Always an informative video.
@5:58 - Does this process replace the "ImmacuWasher Comic Book Washing Machine"?
Not not really I much prefer the immacuwasher but right now I’ve either loaned or sold all of my own and am out of stock personally!

@ImmaculateComics ha that's a great story

Looks 100% better.
Will you be using archival tape on that corner? I've been debating using it on my books.
I love the immacuclean Do you use it on all ages of books ? I’ve only used it on silver age so far . Thanks Rick

Rick, how do you deal with the loss of cover gloss when you're washing a book like this?
