I've put in 300 hours in MH3U and 500 in 4U, and your series of videos is the reason why I finally touched something outside of hammer. I cannot tell you how much your videos have helped me in breaking out of my hammer mindset. I've spent the past hundred hours of gametime crafting endgame lance, gunlance and charge blades because I finally "got it" after these videos. Am loving your MHX series and can't wait to jump into it! Maybe this time I won't go straight Hammerbro! That said, those damn hammer weapon arts look damn sweet.
What else you can do with Longsword is when jumping off of a ledge you can use R twice to do two spirit combo slashes and then when landing preform the 3rd and 4th parts of the roundslash combo. You can also (if timed well) draw into a roundslash by pressing R when drawing your weapon. Lastly if you're climbing a ledge and press R you will initiate the spirit combo that way too.
It should also be worth mentioning that with the Longsword, after each input of the first 2 spirit rush attacks, you can press the X button to apply an additional standard attack that also fills up your spirit gauge without ruining your spirit rush combo, meaning if you whiff any of the first two hits, you won't lose all of your spirit gauge.
X-X-A-X- (X+A) R R R R is my favorite long sword combo in the game. with yellow or red spirit blade the previous hits give you enough to complete the spirit slashes. This chain is quite long though so your are going to have to successfully mount a monster to make it vulnerable long enough to complete the chain. So many times have i killed a monster with this combo
There's so many great weapons in this game. The long sword used to be among the 2 other weapons I used before I started using the great sword almost exclusively.
Thank you so much for this guide. I have played monster hunter 1 and 2, but only got this recently. Long sword is by far my favourite weapon and I never knew it could be boosted further after the spirit gauge so my hunts will be so much easier now. Amazing guide!!!
Thanks mate. I used to use the long sword in MH3U but gave the great sword a try and fell in love with it. I'm moving back to the long sword as a secondary but realized I forgot the basics.
Pretty good guide. I would like to point out an useful trick about Spirit Combo. After every Spirit Slash, with an exception of 3rd one (the one that does three slashes for one input), or after Reverse Slash, you can press X to add another attack and then continue the Spirit Combo. Those additional attacks are important, because they add to your Spirit Gauge, allowing you to preform a full Spirit Combo even if you started out slightly depleted (plus, that's always some additional damage). Also, you can preform Spirit Slashes in the air. Normally, you can make one Spirit Slash, and then continue with the combo after landing. But, if you are at least on White level of Spirit Gauge, you can preform two Spirit Slashes and go immdiately into third. Helps in getting those Spirit Round Slashes quickly.
Thank you for this video. At first I didn't like the longsword (Since I didn't fully understand it) But now that I've seen the video I've crafted a longsword and have been carving everything up with that sucker especially when I get into the red longsword combo. Keep up the videos we rookie hunters love it!
Hahahah ! still stuck up with the old classic "Xenogears" , the one exclusive for the N3DS is "Xenoblade"i cant blame you for subconsciously thinking about Xenogears though , that game is a MAGNUM OPUS
First MH game I ever played a few days ago for 3ds MH4U. This helped me so much as I could not figure out how to get the different tiers of damage with the spirit attacks. The in game tutorial just didn't help as much as this. Thanks so much. Now I feel like im memorizing combos like Tekken haha. Thanks for the help!
I started with the longsword in mh3u, but I ditched it for the the guidance, then lance and sns later on. by mh3u I lost my way, and went back in 4u. its good to be back.
On tri you could do a fade slash into an evasive side roll always helped me, dunno if they still have it on this one but thought i might add a helpful tip
Damn, that Yian Garuga nagitana is sexy. The long sword is probably my favorite weapon and I overall thought that you did a great job explaining it. (Of only I could finally get that last Garuga carapace...)
longsword clearly got some big ass buffs since MHFU on psp, jfc. i used to be a heavy bowgun main cuz i played with a friend who was a longsword main, then when he stopped playing i changed to greatsword, then i swapped to longsword, now during MHU4 i use the charge blade and i haven't swapped yet, but after witnissing this i might just make one.
I'm still pretty early on in MH4U (just beat the S. Magala). So far I've been maining the Charge Blade. But recently I decided to try out the Long Sword a little more extensively, & I found I rather like it. I'm not sure if I like it more then the Charge Blade, but I do like it.
+Devvyn Oler im about to buy this game this week .........is it still worth playing when im this late in the game......like everyone around will be so much stronger than me lol
+sam uel I'd say it is. It's definitely possible to get caught up, & it oughta still be quite sometime before the next MH game is released outside of Japan. Which gives you plenty of time with this one.
Awesome vids but I notice in every weapon tutorial you miss a lot of stuff or easier combos , your getting the basics out of the way which is best for beginners though.
So... I have a question... If you get the 30% increase in damage in the red spirit gauge... And then you fill the gauge again.. Do you get the extra 5% so it would be 35%?
How do I run and draw into spirit slash? I find that to be an incredible technique but I can only pull it off when I'm completely still, any work around for this? Also I wish you could change the button size for the fadeslash button, since at some odd times my ds doesn't read my fadeslash input correctly.
what I find annoying now, is that instead of the bar going down a color tier when it runs out of charge (ex. when the yellow runs out it used to return to white) but now when you run out of color, it returns to standard. Seems like a pretty heavy nerf to me.
Mr. Person Hmmm but the red tier lasts way longer than in did in MH3. I actually think this is a nice balance as before you could drop back to yellow before you had the opportunity to do any real damage. With the added fade slash you can get to red tier quicker and easier than ever before. I think this actually makes the LS a much more consistent weapon.
Luke Taylor Its been a while, but I think the red lasts about the same time, but maybe only a little shorter, and when you lose it, it goes to yellow, not completely away, leaving you with a pretty decent damage buff and only have to do the combo to get it back to red again, instead of the whole chain again.
'scuse me, ***** mind if you make a video that talks about blastblight and all that. Cuz I don't know what those things are all about. I'd really appreciate it. . . By the way, you have wickedly useful videos
+morey piatos By this time you have probably found out what you wanted to know, but if not check out gajin hunter. He made a video all about that. Happy hunting!
I noticed sometimes when I perform the Fade Slash, I change the direction of where i step. you may have explained it somewhere in the video but i think i might've missed it. any info on that?
+Jay Echols I may be a bit late, but you can change the direction of your slash during the attack. So, if you pressed forward during your combo, but adjusted your pad to the right by accident during the slash, the resulting slash goes to the right. The other option might be that you set a different orientation on your game options. You can set whether pressing "down" on your pad equals a backwards move from your point of view or that of the character.
i only do downslash and upperslash when team near me still they complain i dont do good damage if i spam combo they will get mad because i will knock them out
+Pedo Bear If you keep tripping people up, stay close to the monster's tail, while your mates focus on its head. This way, you guys will hit two weakspots without getting in each other's way.
I have yet to find a weapon that 'changes it's appearance' when you charge it up. Which one(s) exactly? And before someone asks, I am crowned and got over 300 hours into the game. Never seen it, ever.
Qasper A crap-ton of hammers and greatswords look different depending on the level of charge. Check out the fully upgraded regios hammer or the akantor GS if you want to know. Although at the moment, I can't think of any DB or LS that change off of the demon/spirit charge other than the obvious glow effects. If anyone knows of ones that change, let me know.
Fluffysbeans I am fully aware that Hammers and GS changes. But this video is about LS where it is mentioned, hinting that there are LS that have similar effects. Which seems like a blatant lie as evidence of it is completely absent.
Now I need to buy a bunch of longswords so I can find one that does. Though I doubt it some, especially since most of the info in these videos is spotty. Nothing will beat the failed lvl 3 GS charges though.
Fluffysbeans Interesting- I will check out some more LS myself in my vain attempt to find truth in what was told. I still believe it to be an utter lie that LS changes shape depending on charge levels.

Ryan Poulos P.S. The two roundhouse combo hits when jumping off the ledge WILL do mounting damage. Enjoy.
Who needs drugs when Long Swords are just as good for tripping?
You sir, deserve a slow clap for that epic burn.

a year later & it's still funny
Epic,Just epic...
Clever

This was my go to weapon on psp especially for tigrex.
YES
Tigrex is way too unbalanced with every weapon
Dcdatruth85 Greatsword for tigrex with art of unsheating bro :D
No way man kinsect glaive

You forgot to mention that you can chain spirit slashes and normal hits to make a longer combo
my favorite combo in long openings, trapped situations or even when the spirit gauge's half full.
Also forgot that you can spirit slash mid air.
Oh damn, I understood I had a bonus with the white bar, but there are THREE stages with 30% increased attack on the last one ? Awesome. Thanks
Thanks mate. I used to use the long sword in MH3U but gave the great sword a try and fell in love with it. I'm moving back to the long sword as a secondary but realized I forgot the basics.

That armor. You look like a power rangers villian. Its awesome XD
One little thing you missed out (not a great deal, just putting it out there) is if you roll and press X, it initiates an upward slash.
Thank you for this video. At first I didn't like the longsword (Since I didn't fully understand it) But now that I've seen the video I've crafted a longsword and have been carving everything up with that sucker especially when I get into the red longsword combo. You can do a full spirit combo from sheath by pressing R + X + A
So I'm a long sword veteran in monster hunter unite and it makes strangely proud to see the new moves. Man I to buy a 3ds.
I'm in the same position hahaha got to buy a 3DS
cjla298 Get the New 3ds though, i'm sure the next game will be exclusive to it just as Xenogears is
cjla298 shehan soysa Definitely get a New 3DS, the circle pad helps immensely [:
+druidofdark Nah, it's confirmed to be for all 3DS models.
Hahahah ! still stuck up with the old classic "Xenogears" , the one exclusive for the N3DS is "Xenoblade"i cant blame you for subconsciously thinking about Xenogears though , that game is a MAGNUM OPUS
Been using longs word for years and I never knew some of the things you showed me until now
Man its come a long way since then

I never knew there was a new combo for the long sword. Great video btw! :)
Just bought this while waiting for iceborne. Thanks for the tutorial!
Awesome video man!
Which weapon is up next?
Thanks! The Lance is up next :) That'll be up on Friday.
Damn, that Yian Garuga nagitana is sexy. The long sword is probably my favorite weapon and I overall thought that you did a great job explaining it. (Of only I could finally get that last Garuga carapace...)
Your videos are amazing and very helpful. I just got monster hunter 4 and i think your guides should be in the game. :)
Long Sword is NOT everyone's best friend in multiplayer, not even close
longsword clearly got some big ass buffs since MHFU on psp, jfc. i used to be a heavy bowgun main cuz i played with a friend who was a longsword main, then when he stopped playing i changed to greatsword, then i swapped to longsword, now during MHU4 i use the charge blade and i haven't swapped yet, but after witnissing this i might just make one.
haha the chaotic magala longsword is scary and beutiful at thr same time
Longsword is a ton of fun. I prefer the Switch Axe though.
Who is still play mh4u at 2019??
Me, add me as friend 1994 - 2592 - 4030
Its nice seeing a comment from four months rather than four years
I came from mhGen, that game is whack.
trying to get into this game now since it had the most content (and came with an awesome special edition 3DS)
Aye still here
Wow I actually had no idea that this weapon had multiple stages for the combo. Thanks, now I can actually kill monsters in under a half hour lol.
I'm still pretty early on in MH4U (just beat the S. Magala). So far I've been maining the Charge Blade. But recently I decided to try out the Long Sword a little more extensively, & I found I rather like it. I'm not sure if I like it more then the Charge Blade, but I do like it.

Devvyn Oler downloading the demo right now to try all the weapons and i will buy the game next week :)
Awesome vids, keep it up man. :)
I use the longsword with the Rhopessa butterfly armor :) Butterfly samurai, coloured red due to the blood of her enemies X_x
I love the tutorials, but oh te poor kitties
long sword makes you feel like a ninja
*samurai
Awesome vids but I notice in every weapon tutorial you miss a lot of stuff or easier combos , your getting the basics out of the way which is best for beginners though.
I know that I'm 3 years late to comment on this video but he did say fade slash and not phantom slash as I thought it was called since freedom unite.
thank you very much for this video! You helped me so much :D
nice and simple
Thanks for this useful guide! :)
Well put!
Really helpful vid. Thanks👌👌👌
Mhfu c.blangonga destructer sharpness+1 FTW
Make a light bowgun tutorial please
Can you please make a video on the long swords with different forms when it gets buffed with spirit
I'm a long sword user and off the top of my head, the Daora's Storm is one of the LSs that changes form from an ax to a scythe.
Very nice tutorial :D
Nice video!
ive been doing long sword since mhportable 3rd.
So... I have a question... If you get the 30% increase in damage in the red spirit gauge... And then you fill the gauge again.. Do you get the extra 5% so it would be 35%?
can you do gunlance tutorial as well i want to know whats new to it
Press A to roll out
How do I run and draw into spirit slash?
I find that to be an incredible technique but I can only pull it off when I'm completely still, any work around for this?
Also I wish you could change the button size for the fadeslash button, since at some odd times my ds doesn't read my fadeslash input correctly.
Whenever I press x+a it thinks I am only pressing x, even if I press a then x instead of at the same time it still sees it as just x
May i ask what set did you use when you are making that longsword video? :)
the only weapon without super armor is lance.
Lancers should be mindful of Longswords... Dont walk into a spirit combo

Mr. Person Dude red tier lasts 60 seconds in 3 compared to the 2 minutes and 30 seconds in 4.
Dat armor tho
Coming from World, I'm a little miffed that it doesn't have Helmbreaker or Foresight Slash yikes
you forgot spirit slash double and normal when you jump c:
'scuse me, ***** mind if you make a video that talks about blastblight and all that. Cuz I don't know what those things are all about. I'd really appreciate it. . .
By the way, you have wickedly useful videos
+morey piatos By this time you have probably found out what you wanted to know, but if not check out gajin hunter. He made a video all about that. Happy hunting!
This "longsword" looks more like Guan Yu's halberd than a sword.
You did not cover the jump attacks
What armor is that?
You are so awesome
I noticed sometimes when I perform the Fade Slash, I change the direction of where i step. you may have explained it somewhere in the video but i think i might've missed it. any info on that?

You're not late at all. Thank you~ I like this game :)
And so do I :D I found the orientation switch quite helpful when it came to positioning. It takes some time to get used to, though.
Yeah he said that
can anyone tell me the name of the armor set that he is wearing? please and thank you.
Arlen H. Yian Garuga G rank.
i only do downslash and upperslash when team near me still they complain i dont do good damage if i spam combo they will get mad because i will knock them out

Which long swords changes your appearance?
he meant the long sword changes its appearance
Which long swords change their appearance ?
you did't tell me every move man
I like your videos but in every weapon tutorial you seem to forget one or two things that would be worth mentioning.
So did you lol.
Okay? Try to make sense next time
You said the creator of the video forgot to mention an important point, but you did not state what it was. Sorry if I seemed like a smart ass.
I have yet to find a weapon that 'changes it's appearance' when you charge it up. Which one(s) exactly? And before someone asks, I am crowned and got over 300 hours into the game. Never seen it, ever.

Supposedly the Narga one morphs a little, but I'm short on S. Zin parts so I can't confirm yet.
Fluffysbeans Interesting- I will check out some more LS myself in my vain attempt to find truth in what was told. I still believe it to be an utter lie that LS changes shape depending on charge levels.
What set and weapon are those ?
+Chris Begin It's G-rank Yian Garuga armor and weapon.
Can anyone tell me what that armor is??
cameron johnson it looks like the yian Garagu G rank armor.
Is ls still viable in mh4u?
Yes, it's very reliable
This video is about monster hunter 4 ultimate
Why does MH4U always look worse than 3U ?
Longswords = easymode?
Michael Pelton same 🤣I just into the game
Nope
what armor is that?
