Union Pacific local potash train dwarfed by red rocks in Moab, Utah

  • I was extremely happy to have caught the local potash train leaving Moab, Utah. Moab has some of the best scenery in the Midwest, and hard to believe there is a railroad running right in the middle of those huge rocks. The railroad was built in the 1960's specifically to ship potash out of Moab. There are two other trains that use the line but neither go as far as the potash mine.
The Rocky Mountaineer train travels 21 miles from the main line in Thompson Springs to Seven Mile siding near Moab. There is another Union Pacific train that picks up uranium tailings at Moab and drops them off at Thompson Springs, Utah. I believe the uranium train only travels at night. The potash train runs on Fridays and on this day it left at 2PM. If you want to see a video of the one and only time in history a passenger train has traveled this same route, watch video linked at end of this video.

I knew that they rebuilt this track a few years ago when they were hauling contaminated soil out of the uranium mine and processing plant site, during the Department of Energy cleanup project. I didn't know that it was still being used for the other mines down there. This is some awesome footage.

Yes that uranium clean up project was supposed to have been finished some years ago. I believe they have another 3 years to go.

Good thing the line was built in the 60s. They would never allow it now.

Hi there, I'm planning a trip to shoot this train so your video is really helpful. Do you know if it returns to grand junction in the evening on Fridays as well?
