You're not the only one. Bernadette Peters' lines had to be dubbed. She was so overcome by emotion during the performance that her voice broke and wavered. She had to redo it in the studio.
I love this song so much even more so when you know, Bernadette got so emotional during this scene that she was asked to come back in and Dub her own performance, you can catch the difference at around the 1.16 mark, but what an incredible performance 😍
God, Stephen was probably the greatest at translating the emotional impact and literary craftsmanship of traditional playwriting into musical theater. A real legend, may he rest.
The best thing Bernadette has ever done. What a gift Mr. Sondheim gave her as "Dot." Mandy, of course, brilliant. Oh, Stephen. We ALL got presents...the joyous gift of you and your huge talented heart.
Ok sorry to be corny and sincere on the internet but, it’s so cool how Sondheim wrote the first handful of Peters songs to have all these instances where she sings the word “George”, usually with a much lower note than the surrounding melody, and then later on when Dot and George split and some of Dot’s earlier numbers are reprised, these same melodic instances (where she would have previously sang the word “George”) are left empty and we just hear a pause in the vocals. It is such an effective way to convey the space that George’s absence leaves behind for Dot (but also for the overall musical, i suppose) but *also* demonstrates how Dot dedicated all this space and time for George that he didnt reserve for her (at least not in the same way). Each time there is a “George” missing in these melodies it is so devastating to me lol.
[DOT, spoken] Yes, George, run to your work. Hide behind your painting. I have come to tell you that I am leaving because I thought you might care to know - foolish of me, because you care about nothing. [GEORGE, spoken] I care about many things. [DOT, spoken] Things - not people. [GEORGE, spoken] People, too. I cannot divide my feelings as neatly as you, and I am not hiding behind my canvas - I'm living in it. [DOT] What you care for is yourself [GEORGE, spoken] I care for this painting. You will be in this painting. [DOT] I am something you can use [GEORGE] I had thought you understood [DOT] It's because I understand that I left That I am leaving [GEORGE] Then there's nothing I can say Is there? [DOT] Yes, George, there is You could tell me not to go Say it to me Tell me not to go Tell me that you're hurt Tell me you're relieved Tell me that you're bored Anything, but don't assume I know Tell me what you feel [GEORGE] What I feel? You know exactly how I feel Why do you insist You must hear the words When you know I cannot give you words? Not the ones you need There's nothing to say I cannot be what you want [DOT] What do you want, George? [GEORGE] I needed you and you left [DOT] There was no room for me [GEORGE] You will not accept who I am I am what I do Which you knew Which you always knew Which I thought you were a part of [DOT] No You are complete, George You are your own We do not belong together You are complete, George You all alone I am unfinished I am diminished With or without you We do not belong together And we should have belonged together What made it so right together Is what made it all wrong No one is you, George There we agree But others will do, George No one is you and No one can be But no one is me, George No one is me We do not belong together And we'll never belong You have a mission A mission to see Now I have one too, George And we should have belonged together I have to move on
Gosh leave it to Bernadette to sing such a masterful piece of music like this and hopefully thier will be more of these songs for her to sing she sings these songs better then anyone else
I saw Sunday In The Park With George with Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin on Broadway twice. For me the first act works so much better than the second act but the highlight of the show is the performances of Bernadette and Mandy.
Wig. The mic pack goes in the back of the wig cap (as a result, no cord) and the mic is under the wig cap as well. Allows for quick wig/hat changes without altering the placement of the microphone. Neat trick.
NO! George, you are complete. Kills me. Artists can be emotionally irresponsible and should neve foster a relationship without being able to separate themselves.
I think the line “tell me not to go” just has so much power I cry every time
Hello Syd! Didn't expect to find you here!
Good, I'm not the only one

I adore your thinking about this, I hadn't even thought about it omg.
Such an observant comment, thank you so much for sharing!
Please ... by all means ... be 'corny and sincere' on the internet. We need much MORE sincerity in social media.
This part of the show always makes me cry 😭
TELL ME NOT TO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
AreTheyGay ayeeee it’s nattt lol
did not expect to see you here!
So... Are they gay??
Greatest musical theater performance of all time. Hands down.
[DOT, spoken]
Yes, George, run to your work. Hide behind your painting. I have come to tell you that I am leaving because I thought you might care to know - foolish of me, because you care about nothing.
[GEORGE, spoken]
I care about many things.
[DOT, spoken]
Things - not people.
[GEORGE, spoken]
People, too. I cannot divide my feelings as neatly as you, and I am not hiding behind my canvas - I'm living in it.
[DOT]
What you care for is yourself
[GEORGE, spoken]
I care for this painting. You will be in this painting.
[DOT]
I am something you can use
[GEORGE]
I had thought you understood
[DOT]
It's because I understand that I left
That I am leaving
[GEORGE]
Then there's nothing I can say
Is there?
[DOT]
Yes, George, there is
You could tell me not to go
Say it to me
Tell me not to go
Tell me that you're hurt
Tell me you're relieved
Tell me that you're bored
Anything, but don't assume I know
Tell me what you feel
[GEORGE]
What I feel?
You know exactly how I feel
Why do you insist
You must hear the words
When you know I cannot give you words?
Not the ones you need
There's nothing to say
I cannot be what you want
[DOT]
What do you want, George?
[GEORGE]
I needed you and you left
[DOT]
There was no room for me
[GEORGE]
You will not accept who I am
I am what I do
Which you knew
Which you always knew
Which I thought you were a part of
[DOT]
No
You are complete, George
You are your own
We do not belong together
You are complete, George
You all alone
I am unfinished
I am diminished
With or without you
We do not belong together
And we should have belonged together
What made it so right together
Is what made it all wrong
No one is you, George
There we agree
But others will do, George
No one is you and
No one can be
But no one is me, George
No one is me
We do not belong together
And we'll never belong
You have a mission
A mission to see
Now I have one too, George
And we should have belonged together
I have to move on
such raw emotion he managed to convey to us. Rest in Peace
I studied art in community college, so when this show hit B-Way, I had to go see it. Mandy and Bernadette were GREAT!!! The show was GREAT!!!
God this show is a masterpiece
Gosh leave it to Bernadette to sing such a masterful piece of music like this and hopefully thier will be more of these songs for her to sing she sings these songs better then anyone else
Too many freakin feels! AAAHHH!!!!
ugh this song gets me every single time😭 this is a sign that i need to watch this musical for the 100th time lol
One of my fav all time musicals!
So painfully beautiful
Thank you for every note and every emotion 🙏🌹🙏🌹
Just incredible.
Love song but I don’t cry anymore.
I saw Sunday In The Park With George with Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin on Broadway twice. For me the first act works so much better than the second act but the highlight of the show is the performances of Bernadette and Mandy.
This is so perfect.
this George dude looks like a piece of art
Avigdor!!!
(He was in Yentl)
And now I suddenly see the tie with Tick Tick Boom, and the Tell me not to go reference before Therapy
OMG I KNOW. IM FREAKING OUT. that scene is my fave in the whole movie and this reference is so genius
Why do you insist you must hear the words when you know I cannot give you words? Not the ones you need
Love this love her
CHILLS
Relatable.
She is stunning!!!
(Does anybody know of that is her hair or if it was a wig?)
I think it's her own hair, because I don't see a mic from her head, and her hair does naturally look like that.
Wig. The mic pack goes in the back of the wig cap (as a result, no cord) and the mic is under the wig cap as well. Allows for quick wig/hat changes without altering the placement of the microphone. Neat trick.
Why do this scene breaks my heart
NO! George, you are complete. Kills me. Artists can be emotionally irresponsible and should neve foster a relationship without being able to separate themselves.
Agree
Bernadette kind of looks like Sigourney Weaver in this
i see it!
Wow you can hear the parts where she dubbed herself. That's so interesting.
Is that Mandy Patinkin??
Yes!
@@rayms416 I thought so, but I had no idea he could sing!
And Patti Lupone swears she has never heard of Bernadette Peters the same way Mariah says she has never heard of Jennifer Lopez! Shade....
Thanks for everything Megan! Here’s something for fun: ruclips.net/video/qDeVxNat4Hs/видео.html
I really hate the way this show is structured and the whole point of it all. But I do like very few musical numbers. This is one of them
